From Dabel Brothers
DABEL BROTHERS ENLIST IN FEIST'S RIFTWAR

Enter the world of the Riftwar through the eyes of the Wood Boy.

The Wood Boy is a 2-part comic book adaptation coming this May from Dabel Brothers Production and Devil's Due Publishing. The comic adapts a short novel by acclaimed fantasy author Raymond E. Feist featured in the Legends anthology from Tor Publishing.

Raymond E. Feist, often called the modern day J. R. R. Tolkien, is a New York Times and Times of London best selling author; his works include Magician, Silverthorn, and A Darkness at Sethanon, the three novels comprising The Riftwar Saga. His short story, The Wood Boy, offers a window into the rich world contained in these books.

This tale chronicles the plight of a young boy named Dirk who spends his young life indentured to the lord of a manor that is taken over by an army of alien invaders known as the Tsurani during the Riftwar. One of
Dirk's primary tasks is carrying wood, and since he is the youngest slave on the manor, he is simply known as "The Wood Boy."

The short story serves as an introduction to the best selling Riftwar series and sets the stage for the upcoming adaptation of "Magician," the first book in the Riftwar series. Raymond E. Feist has given this
adaptation his official stamp of approval certifying his fans will be delighted with the efforts put forth by DBPro in bringing his story to life.

DBPro's Managing Editor Sean J. Jordan is handling the adaptation for DBPro. Jordan is rapidly proving himself as a comic writer by taking on The Wood Boy, his fifth book from the young studio.

The artistic skills of Mat Broome (X-Force, Stormwatch, DefCon 4) will catapult this tale into the visual medium, lending his signature look to the series. Broome, an industry veteran, has worked for Marvel, Image
and Wildstorm, as well as his own company Digital Broome during his long career. His most recent comic endeavors have been as a cover artist for many different publishers in the industry. After taking time away from comics to work in video games, growing exponentially in his skillset, Broome is ready to make his triumphant return to comics on this NY Times Best Selling property.

"The Wood Boy is an amazing coming of age story. It starts off with a young boy who's unsure of himself in the face of an oppressive enemy, and watches him overcome his fears and insecurities to become the best sort of hero - the kind that rushes off after a damsel in distress to confront a much more powerful villain," states Les Dabel, Vice President of DBPro.

"Like much of the Riftwar series, this is a story about a boy who becomes a man through battle and bravery. It's a terrific story, and fans of Mr. Feist and new readers alike are going to love it."

HAPPY HORROR BIRTHDAY TO -
Actor John Astin (THE ADDAMS FAMILY [TV], TEEN WOLF TOO, RETURN OF THE KILLER TOMATOES!, NIGHT LIFE, GREMLINS 2, KILLER TOMATOES STRIKE BACK!, STEPMONSTER, THE SILENCE OF THE HAMS, THE FRIGHTENERS) has been in some of the worst movies ever. But it just wouldn't be a truly bad movie without him and even the producers of the awful TOMATO movies realize that. After the first one, he's been in every sequel since plus the cartoon series plus the (now valuable) "Professor Mortimer Gangreen" character doll. What can we say? We just love old Gomez and wish him a happy 74th birthday!

JAMES GUN IS HOT!
He started with TROMEO AND JULIET. Then he wrote THE TROMAVILLE CAFE and TERROR FIRMER (what kicks off your career better than Troma movies?). But James hit it big with a film many expected to fail: SCOOBY DOO. Yet it was a smash hit! Last week a James Gun written flick turned out to be what most critics and fans consider the best possible (think of what Hollywood usually churns out in remakes and sequels) remake of DAWN OF THE DEAD. It zipped to number 1 ahead of heavy competition. So what was going to knock DAWN OF THE DEAD off of its perch? How about another film penned by James Gunn? SCOOBY-DOO 2: Monsters Unleashed, leads the pack this week.

DAWN OF THE DEAD IS #1!
It wasn't going to be easy. DAWN OF THE DEAD was up against some serious competition. Mel Gibson's controversial film, THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST, had been in first place for three weeks running. The new Stephen King movie, SECRET WINDOW was at number 2 and starred the wildly popular Johnny Depp. In addition, DAWN was opening against two other movies with such Hollywood heavy hitters as Angelina Jolie and Keifer Sutherland (TAKING LIVES), and Jim Carrey, Kate Winslet, Kirsten Dunst, and Elijah Wood (ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND). YET DAWN OF THE DEAD BEAT THEM ALL! Dawn raked in $27.3 million in its first weekend.

From Tempe Video

AFTER 15 YEARS OF FAN DEMAND
Fan-requested Special Edition DVD debuts in early 2005 to celebrate film's 20th anniversary

Tempe Entertainment today announced that their 1990 flagship underground film THE DEAD NEXT DOOR has been acquired by home video titan Anchor Bay Entertainment for release as a Special Edition DVD to mark the film’s 20th anniversary in 2005. Admittedly the largest and most expensive Super-8mm feature film ever made, this fully-restored edition will be released to home video in the U.S. & Canada as well as the United Kingdom.

THE DEAD NEXT DOOR began life during a chance meeting in mid-1985 with a legendary Detroit, Michigan-based cult director known only as “The Master Cylinder” who encouraged 19-year-old J.R. Bookwalter to get his own feature rolling after seeing the young director’s short films. The Master Cylinder even put his money where his mouth was and thus began a 5-year odyssey for first-time feature filmmaker Bookwalter, who shot the epic-scale film in his hometown of Akron, Ohio.

The low-budget horror film quickly became legendary in northeast Ohio during the summer of 1986 as more than 1,500 area residents of all ages came out to play zombies with massive coverage from the local media. Soon the “mysterious identity” of the film’s executive producer sparked the interest of leading horror movie magazine FANGORIA, who did an exhaustive feature in their March, 1987 issue — a full 3 years before the film’s initial home video release on the obscure Electro Video label. Bookwalter’s Tempe took over the film’s distribution in 1992, where it eventually got worldwide exposure in Germany, Japan, Spain, the U.K. and other countries.

Despite the film’s spotty distribution over the last 15 years, THE DEAD NEXT DOOR has found a loyal and steadily-growing fan base worldwide that has allowed Bookwalter to keep making films, including the cult hit OZONE in 1994 and more recently the critically-acclaimed WITCHOUSE 2: BLOOD COVEN and WITCHOUSE 3: DEMON FIRE for Full Moon Pictures. The screenplay for a proposed sequel called DEAD FUTURE: THE DEAD NEXT DOOR has been circulating waiting for the right deal and there is even a video game in development based on the original DEAD.

"It’s hard to escape the shadow of your first film, especially one with such a bizarre history,” Bookwalter explains. “That’s the one people wind up remembering you for, and over the years I’ve repeatedly been asked two questions — ‘When are you making the sequel?’, and more recently, ‘When are you releasing a Special Edition DVD of THE DEAD NEXT DOOR?’”

Thanks to Anchor Bay’s Michael R. Felsher, at least half of the fans’ prayers have finally been answered. “This is going to be a fantastic project to work on,” Felsher says. “Having been a longtime fan of this zombie epic, it's going to be a real treat to see it restored and exposed to a whole new audience of living dead fanatics.”

Bookwalter is also thrilled with the new partnership. “I have been a huge DVD collector right from its launch in 1997, and Anchor Bay has become the preeminent distributor of classic horror films. They’re the best at what they do, and I have used them as a template for my own Tempe DVD releases. To have the same company that has restored such classics as DAWN OF THE DEAD, THE EVIL DEAD and HALLOWEEN behind our little flick is an honor.”

To that end, Bookwalter is personally supervising an extensive remastering of THE DEAD NEXT DOOR from the original Super-8mm film elements, complete with a 5.1 surround remix and a long list of all-new extras documenting the film’s 20-year history. “This will be what I like to call the ‘proper burial’ of this film,” Bookwalter laughs. “When this work is finished, all that will be left to do is to answer the fans’ other question and get that sequel made at long last.”

Anchor Bay expects the feature-packed DEAD NEXT DOOR Special Edition DVD to arrive during the first quarter of 2005 at a collectible price. For updates on the progress of the remastering and release, stay tuned to the film’s official website at deadnextdoor.com.

Will more new volumes follow? "We certainly hope so," say the co-editors. "We, as well as the series' fans, are anxious to see what our writers can come up with next."

For myself and the contributors for feoamante.com, our best wishes go to the family and friends of Dee Willis. All fans of Horror should know that this woman was valuable to us all and will be missed.

Unfortunately, there is more illness news for some of the folks in Horror. I choose to keep a positive outlook by not adding their names here.

HAPPY HORROR BIRTHDAYS TO -
Director Renny Harlan (A NIGHTMARE ON ELMSTREET 4, DIE HARD 2, DEEP BLUE SEA, MINDHUNTERS) is 45.
Director David Cronenberg (SHIVERS, RABID, THE BROOD, SCANNERS, VIDEODROME, THE FLY, DEAD RINGERS, eXistenZ) is 61.

HILTON DOES HORROR
Before you label Paris Hilton a complete buffoon, understand the mental rigor of her ongoing balancing act: Pretending shock and dismay of having a homemade porn video of her circulate just in time for her debut on nationwide television. Being clueless, snobbish, and utterly stupid on television was a great act. So much so that now she's going into film acting!

Joel Silver, hot off of his eroding success with THE MATRIX series, is upping his game by getting together with Robert Zemeckis (DEATH BECOMES HER, DEMON KNIGHT, THE FRIGHTENERS, HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL, WHAT LIES BENEATH, TH13RTEEN GHOSTS, GHOST SHIP, GOTHIKA) to do a remake of the twice remade Horror movie, HOUSE OF WAX. This time though, instead of having a wax museum, the plot will have the totally original idea of plopping Paris Hilton in with a group of her peers (Ha! It's funny already!), wind up in a rural area, and get chased around by a murderous psychopath or two.

At least with Zemeckis on the project, even if the film should crash and burn, nobody attached to it will blame it on the recurring "Death of Horror".

DARK DELICACIES - THE BOOK!
Del Howison, owner of the Burbank, California store Dark Delicacies, has just signed a contract with book publisher Carroll & Graf to edit a horror anthology book
under the store's name and trademark. Dark Delicacies is the only all-horror book and gift store in the United States. They are well known for their signings with authors, director, actors, etc. from the world of horror. Del has co-edited three charity books with his wife Sue Howison for Dark Delicacies, including last year's Framed, which is on the initial ballot of this year's Bram Stoker Awards. Clive Barker (creator of HELLRAISER), Brian Lumley (creator of the Necroscope series) are currently scheduled to be part of the books line-up. Mr. Howison will be co-editing the book with Jeff Gelb, author and editor of twenty books including the HOT BLOOD series (which is currently up to twelve volumes). This inaugral Dark Delicacies anthology is, what the editors are projecting to be, the first of a continuing series. The book is scheduled to be released for Halloween 2005.

Amanda Peck is stuck in a dead-end job, lives with a deadbeat boyfriend, and is dead set on changing her life. But on her journey to discover a dream worth living, Amanda finds herself in a nightmare. Prowling endless miles of asphalt on eighteen wheels with a diesel engine roar, a truck driving vampire is at large. He's already claimed the lives of five women, leaving their mutilated remains behind like roadkill. Now Amanda is his passenger - and he's taking her on the ride of her life.

SHADOW MUSIC RETURNS FROM THE DEAD!
You may have noticed that Shadow Music has been rather dead for quite some time. Someone had to step up to the plate and get it going again, and unfortunately I'm the lucky nominee. It's too late to complain about it now; you all had your chance to take the reins.

I don't anticipate Shadow Music being all that different from the time when Feo and I were doing the lion's share of the content. I will try to regularly update the page with worthy news items from the dark music world. I'll be contributing reviews once again. And yes, there will be more praise than bloodshed since the majority of my selections will come from my own music collection. You never know, though; a trusted band might drop the ball. I won't limit the reviews to cds. There are LPs, demos, and music DVDs which deserve some attention. I also hope to provide more interviews - more relevant ones than the December Wolves and Krieg interviews which should be appearing on the site in the near future. The bands took the time to respond to them and they deserve to be seen and heard. My apologies to Brian O'Blivion, Smails, and Lord Imperial for the absurd wait. The Imperial interview does at least come in time for the release of the Krieg full-length The Black House, due March 10 on Red Stream.

Consider Shadow Music resurrected. More to follow soon.

SCARECROW GODS WILL BE RELEASED

A wonderful thing will happen in March of 2005. My novel, the first novel I ever wrote, will be published by Delirium Books with cover art by Alan Clark. I'm very excited that Delirium is doing this and looking forward to the Alan Clark cover. Just to be published alongside Doug Clegg, Charlee Jacob, Tom Piccirilli and James Morrow, is incredible.

To give you an idea of the novel: SCARECROW GODS is the story of a cult leader; a possessed rocket scientist who speaks in rhyme, palindromes, and anagram; a Roman Catholic monk with doubts about the divine; a savagely-crippled Vietnam vet with the ability to travel out of body in order to escape his own pain; and a young boy who only wants his family to be the way it was before his sister ran away. From the battlefields of Desert Storm, to the highest temples in the Himalayas, to a lonely Mexican Border town, to the dusky Southern city of Chattanooga, to the high desert town of Sierra Vista, this novel crosses all borders and languages. At 120k, the novel is long enough to encompass everyone's story.

While waiting for the novel, check out these excerpts.

Presiding over the voodoo marriage ceremony was Priestess Miriam, who conducted the ritual in a candle-lit, altar-filled room scented by incense. The service included drumming, song-chants and rattles, bread, honey, wine and cake, a veil, a tribute paid to the Great Mother, and an appearance by Damballah, who tongue-kissed the groom and squeezed the bride.

Thanks to everyone who participated and witnessed the event, and to all who've sent us their kind wishes.

FeoNote: These two are good people. I wish them Long life, Love, and Happiness. Congratulations, Linda & Gerard!
