PREPARE FOR DESCENT - SNEAK PREVIEW
FeoNote: THE DESCENT that American audiences will see is a different edit from what I saw and reviewed from England last year. While the original edit was good, I got a chance to see the American edit a few weeks ago and felt it was a far superior edit. The editing is minimal - mainly a "tightening" of a few areas where the movie dragged (largely in the beginning), but achieved maximum effect, making audiences jump in their seats and one woman in front of us start staring directly up at the ceiling whenever she thought something scary was going to happen Again!
NEW YORK, NY - Horror film fans in select cities across the country will be treated to a sneak preview of Lionsgate's newest horror motion picture, THE DESCENT, This one night only advance screening, featuring exclusive behind-the-scenes content created especially by the producers for the event, will take place Wednesday, July 26th at 8:00 p.m. local time - nine days ahead of the film's August 4th wide release.
THE DESCENT special sneak-preview event will be presented by Fangoria Entertainments, Lionsgate Films, and National CineMedia, at 47 participating Regal, United Artists, Edwards, and Cinemark movie theatres across the country in cities including New York, Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, Washington DC, Denver, Atlanta, Miami, and Las Vegas, among others.
Tickets will be on sale beginning July 14 at presenting theatre box offices and online at BigScreenBoxOffice.com at the standard movie ticket price (prices vary by theater location). For a complete list of theatres, please visit the Web site. Seating for THE DESCENT special sneak-preview screening event is limited, and advance ticket purchase is recommended. For additional information, visit THE DESCENT sneak preview webpage at Fangoria.com/descent.
Writer/director Neil Marshall's eagerly awaited follow up to his 2002 hit DOG SOLDIERS, THE DESCENT stars Shauna Macdonald, Natalie Mendoza, Alex Reid, Saskia Muler, Nora-Jane Noone and Myanna Buring. THE DESCENT tells the story of six girlfriends who meet in a remote part of the Appalachians for their annual extreme outdoor adventure, in this case the exploration of a cave hidden deep in the woods. Far below the surface of the earth, disaster strikes, and there's no way out.
The group splinters and each woman pushes on, praying for another exit. But there is something else lurking under the earth. As the friends realize they are now prey, they are forced to unleash their most primal instincts in an all-out war against an unspeakable horror - one that attacks without warning, again and again and again.

STIFF WOOD
Simon Wood's latest book, WORKING STIFFS, has hit the ground running with superb reviews from Hellnotes, Crime Spree and Cemetery Dance. The book is a workplace themed collection of crime stories and a short novel. The reviews have likened Simon's stories to works written by Elmore Leonard , John D. MacDonald, Scott Wolven and Jason Starr. No wonder the book is currently in the hands of Hollywood.
An excerpt of the book is available on Simon's website along with the inspirations for the stories. Simon's publisher is offering a discount to his newsletter members so get on board.

HORROR AND/OR THRILLER
This weekend, U.S. audiences will have a choice between a Horror movie and a Thriller movie: hardcore fans will likely see both. The films in question are Writer and Director Richard Linklater's A SCANNER DARKLY, based on the novel by Phillip K. Dick and Director Gore Verbinski's PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MAN'S CHEST, based on the Disney ride.
Both movies come from a rather successful pedigree. Dick's stories have not always been translated into good films, but the successes include BLADE RUNNNER, TOTAL RECALL, and MINORITY REPORT.
Gore Verbinski, who directed the original PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL also directed the superior remake of 2002's THE RING. Gore's best successes have come from Horror Thrillers and it may just become his legacy. We'll see.

From Ralan
There's big news brewing at Ralan.com. By the end of the summer (so I'm told) the market pages at the Webstravaganza will be on a database and searchable. You'll still be able to rummage through the listings as you always have (to find that "special" market), but you'll also be able to quickly create a list of targeted markets, based on your criteria (genre, pay, word count, response time, e-mail submissions allowed, etc.). The web site will have a new 21st Century design too—without frames.
All this is made possible by my web designer, Mikael Conley of Wildside.dk, and author Philip Lees of Crete—a real international effort.

THEY ARE COUNTING ON YOUR IGNORANCE! DON'T LET THEM DOWN!
I found a trailer for a new TRANSFORMERS movie on the Internet. Yep, they are going to make another movie. Now I really like the Transformers (love is too strong a word), the whole Monster Robot mythos, why, they're more than meets the eye! Yet in the 1980s, the animation was about as crappy as it gets - one step up from Clutch Cargo garbage. But the story! Wow! Though some episodes veered off the story arc into insipidville, overall it was amazing that anyone would have even bothered to write such a compelling and complex story. Especially for a cartoon that, essentially, existed only to advertise toys (Go Chocobots!). The original series gathered together a large body of top writers that included Marv Wolfman (creator of BLADE), David Wise (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles TV series), Len Wein (creator of X-MEN and SWAMP THING), Paul Davids (ROSWELL TV series), and more. This is why TRANSFORMERS as an animated series has endured long after the toys fell in popularity. Suddenly it was the show keeping the Hasbro line alive, not the other way around. The eventual TRANSFORMERS: The Movie, which could have been crap, soared as well.
Now the director who brought you hyped up scifi crap like ARMAGEDDON (so bad I don't know where to begin) and THE ISLAND (last year's tanking crapfest), directs TRANSFORMERS THE MOVIE (bereft of colon), with a barrage of writers whose noble scifi credits include THE ISLAND, THE CORE, and CATWOMAN (sarcasm, yes).
Watch the Trailer.
Then ask yourself, "Why does the Beagle look like the Mars Rover?"
THIS IS THE BEAGLE: IT DOESN'T ROVE. |
I mean, if you are going to sell your picture to an audience who would even know anything about the Beagle or Beagle 2, then shouldn't you at least have a cursory knowledge about it as well?
And if you are going to sell your movie to people who don't know a damn thing about Beagle or Beagle 2, then why even bring it up in the first place? Those people wouldn't know the Beagle from a Hush Puppy.
And yes, this is the same Hollywood that is always publically crying about how red state America jest ain't all that smart! Boo Hoo!
Now for all I know, Director Michael Bay and movie studios Paramount Pictures and Dreamworks didn't even make the trailer. It could have been made by some smaller media company or CGI House that was contracted to do the job. And Michael Bay has proven himself wonderfully adept at directing profitable movies when those movies feature superstar actors with a huge built-in audience. But someone at those studios gave this incredibly ignorant trailer the green light and whoever made it is bag of hammers stupid!
I mean, the mystery as to what may have happened to Beagle and Beagle 2 (both, folded, were about the diameter of a large pizza pan), has long been an Internet joke. And I mean a very popular Internet joke.
Everyone who would know anything about the Beagle (A British endeavor) would know that what they are looking at in the movie trailer is the NASA Mars Rover (a U.S. endeavor), so the entire trailer is just about as stupid as it gets. Anyone who was remotely curious about the Beagle, might even do an Internet search on it, which would turn up thousands of Beagle images - none of which - look like the Mars Rover they've got in the trailer. This means that the people who made and are promoting that trailer are either pretty damn stupid and ignorant, or they think their AUDIENCE is pretty damn stupid and ignorant. AND they are counting on enough stupid and ignorant people paying money at the theater to bet the $100 plus million dollars this film cost.
Now for all I know, the reasoning behind this flick is, "Hey, its just a movie (costing some serious money). Audiences don't care if we get our premise right, the story right, the action right, or even if it makes any sense! What matters is the special effects! Because special effects alone and nothing else has ALWAYS sold a movie!"
Which is, of course, dead wrong. What audiences REALLY don't care about is if a $100 plus million dollar Hollywood movie tanks at the box office and loses a fortune. Don't let Paramount and Dreamworks lose a fortune on their stupid, ignorant bet! Support the mind bogglingly stupid and ignorant (but wealthy) by watching TRANSFORMERS MOVIE - or at least listen to these people when they tell you about global warming and who the intelligent choice for president will be.

JULY 3
START OF THE MONTH UPDATE
June started off with a leap - of sorts. Feoamante.com is the number one rated Horror Thriller website among the major search engines. Yet where the search word Horror is concerned, it has always bubbled in the hundreds at yahoo.com and google.com. That changed in June. Last month saw feoamante.com, under the search word Horror, rocket up from the meandering hundreds at yahoo.com to #20! That's partially thanks to all of you! So thanks! Now google.com needs to get with the program!
As imdb.com is the online Voice of the movie entertainment industry, HorrorWorld.org has become the online Community of the Horror fiction industry. For the month of July, I, E.C.McMullen Jr. am the featured writer at HorrorWorld. My short story, ITS SO COLD, a desert story, comes from my years of living in Southern Arizona. That title is not a misspelling, but a play on words, as you'll discover when you read the tale.
We've posted two photos so far of feoamante.com readers holding a Starbucks Cup #118, "The Way I See It", featuring a bit of philosophy from E.C.McMullen Jr. To extend this further, some Horror books out there have "Feo Amante" printed in them: whether as blurbs, reviews, or even as a character in the story itself. If you find one of these books, and have your photo taken with it, we'll post it on the site along with your web address. No website? No problem. We'll still post your mug with the book cover. Are there any rules to this? Yes!
Rule #1: Have the book cover right next to your face to clearly show off the title, the author, and your puss.
Rule #2: Don't be cheap! I won't post any photos of you in the bookstore, you actually have to buy the book. But don't worry: if yer into Horror, you'll likely love the book.
On the other hand, June saw a slight dip in visitors from the previous month. While graphs always consist of peaks and valleys, overall feoamante.com is doing over twice as well as last year where it comes to yall, the visitors. In 2005, we had over 670,000 visitors. At only the halfway mark of 2006, we have well over 556,000 visitors. More than doubling our number of visitors from the previous year? Not too shabby - And thanks!
From Brian Knight
A BEACH OF A DARK DISCOVERY!
As luck would have it, former feoamante.com reviewer, Brian Knight, has his own desert story coming out this month. Brian sez:
"Dark Discoveries #8, featuring my short story I AM THE COYOTE, I AM THE SNAKE and an interview with Editor James Beach should be available to the public in a few weeks. Dark Discoveries is distributed through some major bookstores, including Hastings and Barnes & Noble. You can also purchase it online at DarkDiscoveries.com, shocklines.com, and other online booksellers.
I Am The Coyote, I Am The Snake is the story of a strange desert shaman and his unwilling bride.
Story illustration by Jennifer Galasso."
Now don't sit on the fence over this one 'cuz magazines don't park on the store shelves forever, you know. If yer mulling over just how "strange" that desert shaman is, lemme tell ya that he's so god damn strange Brian Knight wrote a story about him! THAT'S just how freakin' strange he was! - and his unwilling bride is probably no picnic either! But you'll never know for sure until you get off yer carcass and buy the damn Dark Discoveries magazine!
Ya see? THIS is the kind of swell promotion we give our writers, past and present, here at Feo "F**kin' Amante dot com!

CHECK YER FLUIDITY
My novella, WINGS OF THE BUTTERFLY, is expected to be released in August from City Contrasts. You can get tons of details about it at DarkFluidity.com, including an excerpt.
Personally, I'm very excited about WINGS. I think it's better than anything I've had published thus far. It's a bit violent, but it's also got a bit of depth, though you certainly aren't required to read for depth.

STACI GOES SCIFI
I have a new outlet, and have overseen some major changes to the Horror site at About.com, which I want you to know about - Details:
1) Sci-Fi Wire
I am now doing on-camera interviews for The Sci-Fi Channel's website, Sci-Fi Wire (owned by NBC Universal). On the site you can currently see my interviews from TV junkets, special events, one-on-ones, and red carpet premieres. Here is a clip from the Superman Returns premiere.
2) About.com
The website "Horror Books & Movies" has now been changed to reflect movies only, and has broadened the scope to include suspense, thrillers, mysteries. any movies that make the spine tingle.
The new name of the site is: "Horror & Suspense Movies". The URL remains the same. It is still owned by the New York Times, and I am still doing on-camera interviews, set visits, reviews, articles and much more.
Books will be reviewed on the site ONLY if they have a horror or suspense movie tie-in.
More on About.com.
