Celtic Frost
From Tom Gabriel Fischer
CELTIC HELLHAMMER

Tom Gabriel Fischer is known to Heavy Metal fans as Tom Gabriel Warrior, the lead guitarist for CELTIC FROST (TO MEGA THERON). But before C.F., there was HELLHAMMER. In his personal blog, Tom interviews his two former HELLHAMMER bandmates about their new book.

I spent hours yesterday in the presence of Hellhammer's two iconic former bass players, Steve Warrior and Martin Eric Ain. We interviewed Steve Warrior in detail for the forthcoming Hellhammer book, "Only Death Is Real", to be published sometime in 2008. Although I had spoken to Steve several times in recent months in the course of the research for the book, yesterday marked the first time I had seen him in many, many years. It was emotional and, I believe, a truly special experience for all of us.

Continued offsite at Delination.

Plasterhead

From Natalie Wicks
PLASTERHEAD FOR HALLOWEEN

In the tradition of FRIDAY THE 13th, THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE, and A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET, comes a new film from Arts Alliance America. This soon-to-be-cult classic introduces a new, iconic horror villain – Plasterhead - a haunting figure who terrorizes four college students on their way to Miami for Spring Break.

PLASTERHEAD was written, directed, and produced by newcomer and first timer, Kevin Higgins and stars, Kathryn Merry (THE CREEK), Raine Brown (HORROR), and Brandon Slagle (SUBJECT 87).

A throwback to the more visceral, serious horror films of the late 70's and early 80's, PLASTERHEAD is set in the bowels of West Virginia. Filmed entirely in the Catskills of Upstate New York to evoke a sleepy backwoods town, PLASTERHEAD pays homage to one of its predecessors, by shooting its diner scenes at the infamous Blairstown Diner in Blairstown, New Jersey, featured in the film FRIDAY THE 13th.

Although filmed on a very low budget, PLASTERHEAD has a look and sound comparable to any full-length big budget feature. This in part is primarily due to the filmmakers’ decision to lens PLASTERHEAD with the Panasonic DVX100A. This revolutionary digital video camera, which has quickly become the gold standard for independent filmmakers, is able to shoot at 24fps (frames per second), the frame rate of traditional film.

Special extra features on the DVD include: deleted scenes; alternate scenes; commentary track and the film trailer. A viral web-based campaign targeting horror and hard-core music fans will be among the marketing elements supporting the release. PLASTERHEAD will be available on DVD October 2, 2007.

Synopsis:
Ray Williams was brutally beaten by a band of locals after stopping off in Rolling Glen for a drink and his body, left for dead in an empty cornfield, was never found. Crooked Sheriff Earl Taggart lords over the town with an iron fist and helped acquit the locals involved in the attack.

Whispers of the Williams incident run through the tired walls and eaves of Rolling Glen. Some believe Williams still roams the woods on the outskirts of town, while others claim to have seen Williams in person, a looming figure with a ghostly white visage with a makeshift cast to mask the scars from his assault.

Fifteen years later, four college friends from New Jersey are on their way to celebrate Spring Break and veer off the main highway, only to find themselves uncovering details of the grotesque legend.

The four friends soon find themselves holed up in an abandoned farmhouse, mired in a macabre web of terror. Sheriff Taggart will do anything to keep the truth buried…the truth that Plasterhead is frighteningly real.

Plasterhead was an Official Selection at the Atlanta Horror Film Festival and the Evil City Film Festival. It stars Scream Queen Raine Brown, who also starred in SATAN'S PLAYGROUND, AUNT ROSE and BARRICADE. Its diverse soundtrack runs the gamut from Edgar Allen Floe to The Cutaways.

Dragon Wars D-War

From Bryan Westbrook
DRAGON WARS: D-WAR

From Showbox/Younggu Art Entertainment, DRAGON WARS: D-WAR attacks the US on September 14, 2007:
In a small Korean village, five hundred years ago, a girl named Narin was born carrying the coveted Yeouijoo inside her. The Heavens sent the protector Bochun and his protégé Haram, to ensure that when it came time, Narin was peacefully sacrificed to the pre-determined Good Imoogi. Bochun vigorously trained Haram as a knight, to be prepared for the eventual day when Narin would be delivered to the Good Imoogi. The day the Dark Imoogi, Buraki, and his army destroyed Narin's village looking for the Yeouijoo, Bochun instructed Haram to take her to the Good Imoogi.

The young girl and her knight would then fulfill the giant's serpent's destiny by giving it the power to save the world and become a heavenly dragon. By this time, after spending several years together, Haram and Narin had fallen in love. Unable to sacrifice their love to the benevolent Imoogi, they jumped to their deaths together in each other's arms. The Good Imoogi's destiny was unfulfilled and he would have to wait another five hundred years until the next Yeouijoo appears.

It is now five hundred years later in present day Los Angeles and the quest for the Imoogi is reborn. Haram and Narin have been reincarnated as Ethan Kendrick (Behr) and Sarah Daniels (Brooks) whose bond of love remains unsevered. Ethan is an investigative reporter for the local news. He is closely following a series of unexplainable disasters occurring in the area. When a young woman named Sarah is linked to those occurrences, Ethan remembers that an ancient man he met many years before had predicted all of these events . Ethan finds Sarah and helps her escape the wrath of Buraki and his army. Aware that Sarah must sacrifice herself in order to save the city from the Buraki and ensure that the Good Imoogi becomes the Dragon, Ethan tries to convince Sarah that there is another way to battle the Imoogies. Meanwhile, the FBI agent on the case, Frank Campbell (Forster), has uncovered the Imoogies' intentions through his own investigations. Campbell is ready to sacrifice Sarah to the demonic animals to save Los Angeles. In the face of chaos and destruction, Ethan and Sarah must decide their own fate - whether to defy the will of heaven once again and let the city be destroyed or deliver Sarah to the Good Imoogi.

The film stars Jason Behr (ROSWELL [TV], THE GRUDGE, SKINWALKERS), Amanda Brooks (CUT OFF, FLIGHTPLAN), Elizabeth Peña (JACOB'S LADDER, STRANGELAND, IMPOSTOR, THE INCREDIBLES), and Robert Forster (ALLIGATOR, SUPERNOVA). The movie was directed by Hyung-rae Shim (DRAGON TUKA, POWER KING) and produced by James Kang.

From Beyond

TOMORROW'S DVDS TODAY!
Tomorrow on the TeeVee DVDs we'll have
THE ADDAMS FAMILY: VOLUME 3 (1964) - Wait a minute! This is the original series and it's "Volume 3" you say? But THE ADDAMS FAMILY only lasted two seasons. How can you have three volumes out of two seasons - and this one is the FIRST Season? THE ADDAMS FAMILY was launched September of 1964 and ran through September of 1966. It became wildly popular after it was cancelled via repeats in syndication. Networks had no idea how to market a hit then, and they have no idea now.
BONES: THE COMPLETE SECOND SEASON - 20th Century Fox sells you the full second season at a reasonable price without trying to gouge you with a season split. I hate those season split DVDs, which is why I won't buy the Battlestar Galatica Second Season, which is split into 2.0 and 2.5. There are a few other television shows that I really like, but that I stopped watching and won't buy, for this very reason. Your mileage may vary.
CHARMED: THE FINAL SEASON - Doesn't matter if you liked it or you hated it, the fact is its coming out whether you like it or not. What's more, if you ARE a CHARMED fan, Paramount Home Video won't be fuc*ing you over by splitting the season into two halves and trying to gouge you twice on the same season - like Paramount does on SOME of their TeeVee releases.
GOOSEBUMPS:
SAY CHEESE AND DIE
IT CAME FROM BENEATH THE SINK
NIGHT OF THE LIVING DUMMY - If you like 'em, you like 'em. Nothing I can do about that.
SUPERNATURAL: THE COMPLETE SECOND SEASON - Same goes here, Warner is selling the full season at a reasonable price without trying to gouge you on it.
THE FILM CREW: WILD WOMEN OF WONGO - See? It's not just a song by The Tubes (by ... the who? NO, BY THE TUBES! HA! HA! Ah screw it) The movie really exists and it's up to Mike Nelson and some of the other guys behind the old Mystery Science Theater 3000 TeeVee show, to put it out of its misery.

These are the movie DVDs getting released tomorrow.

APRIL FOOLS - Another Horror movie about April Fools. Why no comedies? Why only Horror Thrillers about April Fools Day?

THE BORIS KARLOFF BOX: 16 FRIGHTFUL FILMS - At a price so low, the quality is frightening!

THE BURNING - From 1981 is this Horror Thriller movie in the woods (a staple of Horror Thriller, don't knock it). As is often the case with these movies, being born ugly and then getting beaten and burned nearly to death, has its upside. Now you would think that such an ordeal like HAVING YOUR FLESH BURNED OFF, would you make you pretty weak and sickly; but not for Cropsy. It inexplicably gives him superhuman strength! Still, Cropsy's in a lot of pain and no one will look at him twice without screaming or throwing up (so don't try to gain super powers by doing this at home, kids!). Cropsy uses his Super strength to tear everyone, who comes within reach, a new ass. Which is just as well because their old ass had a crack in it.

CAUTIVA - A movie about Argentina's real life horrors during their military junta period of the 1970s and 1980s. Not the first fictional movie made about that period (APARTMENT ZERO) and it won't be the last.

THE CURSE / THE CURSE 2 - An MGM two-fer from 1987 starring Wil Wheaton (PYTHON, STAR TREK: NEMESIS) in the first one.

THE CURSE OF THE BLACK DAHLIA - Direct to video from 2006.

CURSED / DARK WATER - I'm not sure if this two-fer is worth it even as a double feature.

CHOSEN SURVIVORS / THE EARTH DIES SCREAMING - Check it out! From 20th Century Fox Midnight Movies comes a Science Fiction - Woo, Woo, Woo - Double Feature!
Other 20th Century Fox Double Features under the Midnight Movies banner tomorrow include
DEVIL'S OF DARKNESS / WITCHCRAFT
THE PHANTOM FROM 10,000 LEAGUES / THE BEAST WITH A MILLION EYES
THE HOUSE ON SKULL ISLAND / THE MEPHISTO WALTZ
BLUE PRINT FOR MURDER / MAN IN THE ATTIC
BEAST WITHIN / BAT PEOPLE
GORILLA AT LARGE / MYSTERY ON MONSTER ISLAND
YONGARY: MONSTER FROM THE DEEP / KONGA

DEAD IN THE WATER - Another Horror Thriller movie about hot teens in the woods getting killed and eaten by freaks.

DEATH SHOCK - From 1981 comes this leetle Horror Thriller about being shocked after death instead of right before it.

DON'T LOOK IN THE ATTIC - From 1981. I mean, they were TOLD not to look in the attic. Told NOT to look in the attic! If they were told once they were told a million times. DON'T look in the attic! So what did they do? T'cha! They looked in the attic!

DRIVE-IN MASSACRE - From 1974 comes a lesson about messin' at the drive-in.

DR. JEKYLL'S DUNGEON OF DEATH - Because September is a dumping ground for Horror Thriller movies.

Edgar Allen Poe's THE RAVEN - A silent movie from 1915.

THE EVADING - Beware of guys who wear black capes. They're up to no good. Batman never wore a black cape: In every comic book he wore a purple cape - which is another kind of warning altogether.

EVIL JUDGEMENT - From 1984 comes a pretty good reason why you SHOULDN'T throw yourself on the mercy of the court.

FACE/OFF: TWO DISC SPECIAL COLLECTOR'S EDITION - From 1997 comes this John Woo SciFi Thriller at a reasonable price.

THE FLY COLLECTION - All three of the original THE FLY movies. Check out our reviews.

FOOD OF THE GODS - From 1976 and this one could REALLY use a remake! But hey, how many Horror Thriller movies can you see that have a television evangelist getting naked? Really? I didn't know about that one. But here is another. Stars Marjoe Gortner.

FRANKENSTEIN '80 - From 1979 comes this tale of what the near future (now past) will be like.

FROM BEYOND (UNRATED DIRECTOR'S CUT) - Now I usually don't like Director's cuts, but FROM BEYOND in the theaters just looked like a movie that some one cut off at the knees. I'm fully stoked for this one, so read my review. Directed by Stuart Gordon (RE-ANIMATOR, DOLLS, KING OF THE ANTS).

FROM HELL - Some critics acted like this movie was FROM HELL, but actually its not bad at all. Stars Johnny Depp (A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET, EDWARD SCISSORHANDS, FREDDY'S DEAD, THE NINTH GATE, THE ASTRONAUT'S WIFE, SLEEPY HOLLOW, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN [all], CORPSE BRIDE).

GRINDHOUSE: DON'T ANSWER THE PHONE / PRIME EVIL - Two from The Grindhouse. Remember that Grindhouse releases exploitation in general, and not Horror, Thriller, Mystery, and Suspense in particular. Not all Grindhouse is scary, but its all pretty much exploitative.

THE HAUNTING OF #24 - Don't think - even for a minute - that this movie was hoping to cash in on 1408! Just! Don't! Think! That!

HOUSEBOAT HORROR - From 1989, this title was chosen because Trailer Lake Monster didn't have quite the same kick.

THE HOUSE OF USHER - No, not the rap guy, the Poe guy who wrote poetry you can rap to!
Once upon a midnight dreary!
While I pondered weak and weary!
Anyway... this stars Austin Nichols (THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW).

THE LOST WORLD: THE SPECIAL EDITION - What makes this edition so damn special is the fact that it includes both the silent 1925 movie as well as the 1960 Irwin Allen flick. You don't think that's so special? What the hell are you even doing here?

MANHUNTER - The first Hannibal Lector movie and one of the best. Tom Noonan is awesome as Francis Dollarhyde (THE ASTRONAUT'S WIFE, EIGHT LEGGED FREAKS) and William Peterson gives the performance that would net him (years later) the starring role in the original CSI. Otherwise, its just a re-release.

NAILED - This one has an interesting premise. Some escaped prison convicts take refuge in a house where a sickly old man lives. But who takes care of the man? Could it be ... the house?

THE ORSON WELLES WAR OF THE WORLD'S SCANDAL - A documentary of a real-life Horror that occurred in America, that shows just how much meaning words really do have. Even after it was revealed to be a false alarm, a group of people existed - for a time (much like today's 9/11 "Truthers"), that refused to believe the Martian invasion WASN'T real. This double disc set includes a CD of the actual radio broadcast that terrified the nation.

PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE - Good movie, half-assed re-release.

THE PIRATES OF GHOST ISLAND - From this year no less! Hmmm. What, do you suppose, is this movie is trying to capitalize upon?

THE RETURN OF DRACULA / THE VAMPIRE - Not great Horror, but fun Horror. And as a double feature, pretty sweet!

THE RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD (COLLECTOR'S EDITION) - What makes this movie so damn collectable is that MGM is charging as much for this single disc standard DVD as most companies would charge for a BLU-RAY or HD-DVD. For that price we get what we should have got in the first DVD before it got so "special". Still, this is RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD, where the world was introduced to zombies that ate brains (Romero's zombies weren't so picky), and could talk, run, think, and "strategize". "Send more cops...!"

SCARECROWS - From 1988 comes this Horror movie that no one remembers. Wot doth that portend? Directed by William Wesley (ROUTE 666).

SEXY BEAST - Good movie, half-assed ... aw forget it!

SIGNS / THE VILLAGE - A two-fer to underline Shyamalan's arrogant fall from grace ... the grace of his audience. How does THIS wine taste, pal?

SNOOP DOGG'S HOOD OF HORROR - Reviewed here.

SODOMA'S GHOST - from 1988 is this Lucio Fulci flick when Lucio was adding more sex and less horror to his Horror Thriller films.

SOMETIMES THEY COME BACK - From 1991, and since this is a Stephen King direct-to-video re-release, its certainly true in this case.

SPOOKED - When you've made more in pizza delivery tips, for the week, than you know what to do with, you fund a film like SPOOKED.

SPY KIDS / SPY KIDS 2 - Where is SPYKIDS 3? That doesn't make the grade? Apparently someone thinks so. Maybe it will be two-fer'd with Shark Boy and Lava Girl.

TALES FROM THE CRYPT / VAULT OF HORROR - Very cool! These movies aren't good enough for me to spend much individually, but getting them both on one disc? Oh yeah, I'm grabbing it! Some movies were just made to be double features and these two guarantee a fun movie evening for you and your pig monsters (aka Horror fiends).

WALK OF THE DEAD - From 1973 comes this Spanish Horror Thriller with a title that doesn't really seem all that alarming. The dead are just out walking; just taking a casual stroll; just doing their thing, y'know? Try to avoid contact.

WITCHFINDER GENERAL - Not, you understand, just a general witchfinder. From 1968 comes a Vincent Price Horror Thriller that still has some pretty brutal scenes. At the time, some critics thought Vincent Price was destroying his career with these bloody over-the-top horror movies. They had no idea that Price was merely laying the foundation for all who would come later. Watching a Vincent Price movie is like watching the birth of countless Horror Thriller movie clichés (still used today!) when they were new.

ZOMBIE AFTERMATH - Believe me, there is one hell of a lot of cleanup after you've dealt with zombies. Nobody ever made a movie about it though ... until now. Well, this movie came out in 1982 so no one ever made a movie about it ... until then!

HAPPY HORROR THRILLER BIRTHDAYS TO-
And On Sunday -

Actor Jeffrey Combs (FRIGHTMARE, THE MAN WITH TWO BRAINS, RE-ANIMATOR [all], FROM BEYOND, CELLAR DWELLER, DOCTOR MORDRID, NECRONOMICON, CASTLE FREAK, THE FRIGHTENERS, HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL, THE ATTIC EXPEDITIONS, FEAR DOT COM, ABOMINABLE, and way more!) is 53. Look for Jeffrey's upcoming Horror Thriller movies, RETURN TO THE HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL and PARASOMNIA.
Actor Goran Visnjic (NIGHT WATCH, PUSKA ZA USPAVLJIVANJE, THE PEACEMAKER, THE DEEP END, DOCTOR SLEEP, ELEKTRA) is 35.
Comic The Amazing Jonathon is a Horror comic if there ever was one. He routinely chews up shards of glass, razor blades and string, and then, bleeding profusely from the mouth, pulls it all out neatly tied to the string. He is also known for pulling the spines out of volunteers from the audience. He is 49 today.

Hatchet

From Ed Peters
HATCHET TIME

It’s well past Midnight on the West Coast. Today is THE day! Victor Crowley officially becomes a reality!

Everyone at Anchor Bay Entertainment and Ariescope Pictures are very proud that we could bring Adam Green's HATCHET to the big screen. We are also indebted to the untiring efforts of the HATCHET Army, who spread the word of Victor Crowley's imminent arrival with an unmatched fervor and enthusiasm that only an energized fan base can muster.

And while we are still looking to add more theaters in the weeks ahead, now is the time to let your voice be heard – via the box office. Let each ticket stub be a resounding vote for truly independent filmmaking! And stuffing the ballot box is not only encouraged, it's downright necessary.

Also, if you are in the Los Angeles area, there will be a special “opening night” cast & crew Q&A after Friday’s 10pm showing of HATCHET at the prestigious Arclight Hollywood cinemas. Writer/director Adam Green will be in attendance, along with stars Joel David Moore, Joleigh Fioreavanti, Joel Murray, Richard Riehle, Parry Shen, Patrika Darbo, Josh Leonard and special makeup effects supervisor John Carl Buechler. We promise a very special evening, as Green and company recount their laughs and pains in bringing the next great horror icon to the fans.

Hatchet
PEOPLE ASK ME WHY I SMILE SO MUCH AND I SAY, "BECAUSE WHEN I LOOK AT YOU I THINK SOME FUNNY THINGS."
HATCHET: MY TAKE
I usually don't do this, but a few things need to be said and I don't see them getting said elsewhere. When Ed Peters' (
in the above article) writes in, he writes as a publicist for his various clients: in this case, Starz and Anchor Bay Entertainment: the distributors for HATCHET. And that's cool with me. As long as any publicist stays on topic, which is the creator and not the company, they can write in all the promotion they want and I'll post it. But I attended the Q&A at the San Diego Comic Con this year and I listened to Adam Green, creator of HATCHET.

Adam has been working on HATCHET for a real long time: he finished his Louisiana shooting in the summer of 2005, the last film production to take place in that state before Katrina hit. It was also the year he turned 30.

Adam is a short, pudgy guy who looks every bit the fanboy. And of all the personal heroes he could have chose, he picked Dee Snider of Twisted Sister. Twisted Sister is a band from the late seventies/early eighties that was always a joke and the Sisters meant it to be that way. But just because their personna was a joke didn't mean that their music wasn't real. Somewhere between making fun of yourself and delivering a solid product, Adam found something admirable in Dee.

That couldn't have made things any easier for him when approaching Hollywood suits. It's one thing to jump up and say, "I wanna be a movie director like Alfred Hitchcock or James Cameron!" But to say "I wanna be like Dee Snider!" ...yeah ... you know, that just couldn't seem like much to live up to.

Dee's music career was short; his movie, STRANGELAND, was awful; He won't stop obsessing about his film and move on to another film project, and he currently works as an Internet Radio personality. Not a lot to show after 30 some odd years in the biz. But Dee did have anthems: Inspirational tunes from "We're Not Gonna Take It" to "I Wanna Rock" and more.

There is something about Dee's music that tells you, no matter who tries to stop you, no matter if you are even you're own worst enemy, you are never going to give up. You will fight everyone on the planet to fulfill your dreams and if that fight includes fighting yourself, so be it. I'll come back to this tangent in a moment.

So I've been watching a lot of Horror Thriller up and comers over the past few years from writers to directors and if there is one statement I've come to utterly despise its this: "Buy my "Brand X" and support independent Horror!"

Buying someone's shit JUST so you can say you support independent Horror, Does Not Support Horror. And you should never support someone who puts out crap (I'm thinking Uwe Bolles and Ulli Lomell, but there are more), because they bleat some guilt trip "hook" about supporting independent Horror, or "R" rated Horror. That doesn't support Horror Thriller, it wrecks it.

How about I go out and support GOOD Horror? Or at least, go out and support someone who is TRYING to make good Horror Thriller.

I've read and talked to and listened to a number of people yap about their Horror book or their Horror movie and whenever I hear someone talk - not about how good their work is, or how hard they worked - but how the fans should SUPPORT them regardless, I wanna spit in their stupid freakin' face!

One writer / director bought me lunch on the Warner Bros. lot one day. He had been talking for years about how crappy Hollywood Horror movies were (no argument there). And how his movie was going to "blow everyone away!" (Great. I'm all for that!) So on that day over lunch when I asked him how his movie was coming along - back in February of 2006 when he was editing - he said, "Well, I hope the fans will be forgiving."

I set down my fork and looked him straight in the eye. I spoke quietly so the lunch munchers around us wouldn't hear and I said,

"They won't forgive you. Especially you after all you've said over the last two years about how great your movie will be. If you don't deliver what you said you would, they will jeer your movie in the theaters and mock you in message boards across the Internet until another writer director will jump up and say that his or her movie will be much better than yours."

His face pinched up in hurt and anger. How dare I speak to him this way after he paid eight bucks for my lunch? But I was telling him the truth and doing it as quietly as possible. Remember, that I hadn't even seen this guy's movie yet. I hadn't seen it, but I'd read him hype himself on nearly every Horror Thriller website out there including this one. So I wasn't trying to cut him down, I was making sure that he wasn't fooling himself. He used hype and trash talk to paint himself into a corner. His movie HAD to rock. No artist should EVER create a work thinking, "Well, I hope the audience will be forgiving."

When Steven Spielberg looks at the lackluster ticket sales to his recent movies and declares, "I don't care, I'm making movies for myself now." What he is really saying is, "I've lost my fire. I've got no more to offer." Steve has been running on fumes for so long that he can no longer guarantee great opening box office - which was once a given. These days he just wants to re-work his old classics like George Lucas; remove all trace of a talented man with fire in his heart and gut. These days Steve wants to re-make his movies as old and tired and politically correct as he has sunk. These days he gets mocked on South Park. Such people should go off and make reality TeeVee shows in the hope of finding someone who could be as good as THEY once were. Oh wait, Steven is doing that.

So let me tell you what Adam Green said at the Comic Con. Adam Green stood up there before a crowd of thousands and said, "When I was a kid going to Horror movies, I didn't go to watch torture porn or women getting raped. I went to get scared! I went to watch a HORROR MOVIE!" The audience didn't just cheer, they stood up and applauded.

With that statement, Adam drew a stark line in the sand saying that he would NOT be another Rob Zombie or Eli Roth. What was refreshing about his statement was, I really like Rob Zombie and Eli Roth. I've been praising them both for years on this site - but Adam had a point, and it flipped a light on in my head.

On the HATCHET poster it says, "It's Not A Remake, It's Not A Sequel, And It's Not Based On A Japanese One."

That was Adam's second line in the sand, saying that he would NOT be another Sam Raimi or Renny Harlan (not that anyone was asking for another Renny Harlan).

The tag line for HATCHET is "Old School American Horror".

Adam's third line in the sand. He's going to bring us the kind of Horror we saw back when all of these tired filmmakers were on fire! The ones that are STILL selling on DVD!

Pretty freaking ballsy!

Adam did not stand on that stage at Comic Con in 2007 and tell us how great his movie is. He didn't stand there and tell us to please go see his movie to support "independent Horror" - or "R" rated Horror: He didn't hide behind such drivel. Instead he asked us to please support HIS effort. He told us that he worked real hard on it. And that he hoped we'd LIKE his movie (not, you understand, simply see his movie regardless) because he did his best to bring us the kind of movie he thinks we want.

So I have no idea if I'm going to like HATCHET. I've no idea what Adam's "Best" can be. It could be great or it could be a turd. But I like the idea that Adam looks at a lot of the failing, faltering, box office bombing crap that passes for most Horror today and thinks, "We're Not Gonna Take It!"

I like knowing that he sits before his writer's table, and in his director's chair, and at his editing booth and thinks, "I Wanna Rock!"

I like that he knows how to make a stand without talking shit! I like that he knows how to promote himself without hoopla or hyperboly.

If he can transpose his attitude to film, HATCHET might just be kick-ass.

So here I go gang, I'm about to watch HATCHET. See you Monday.

The Bunker
From Pamela Hazelton
BLIND IN THE BUNKER
Miami, FL - Writer/director Joe Monks announced that a new trailer for his film, THE BUNKER, can be found on YouTube and on the film's official web site, SightUnseenPictures. In addition, two clips from Inside The Bunker, the 48 minute documentary chronicling the making of the blind filmmaker's first feature, are also online. (Note to readers - some language may not make these clips work-friendly) The filmmaker has also put up the DVD box cover art he hopes will be used when the film secures distribution.

"It's funny," Monks says regarding distribution. "Producer/director Darin Scott said to me, after I told him several distributors had gotten in contact to ask about the rights, that if I could bottle that - distributors contacting me - I wouldn't have to make another movie! Well, even if I could bottle that, I'm still looking forward to making the next picture, and while we're still seeking distribution for THE BUNKER, things are looking up. We've had conversations with several distributors as regards the North American rights, and a pair of foreign market representatives covering European territories have taken an interest as well."

Coming off two well-received screenings over the summer, Monks is excited about projects he's working on while exploring options on THE BUNKER. "There are two bands that I'm going to be shooting music videos for, and I'm scripting a short based on one of my comic book stories," said Monks. "The short is gritty and topical, and it deals with abortion and how two people on opposite sides of the right to choose movement collide. While I'm hoping to parlay sale of THE BUNKER into some pitch meetings for features I'm ready to roll on at a moment's notice, I'm too much of a workaholic to let time pass without having a bunch of irons in the fire."

Monks has also added another appearance to his fall schedule, at JaniCon in Jacksonville, November 2-4, where he will introduce THE BUNKER and hold a Q&A session afterward. He is also in talks with theatres in Miami, where a good portion of the film was shot, and New York, to hold a few one-night screenings to promote the film.

"Now that people are finally seeing the movie," Monks told Jessie Lilley of Mondo Cult, "the curiosity factor isn't the most important thing any more. Sure, it's still a story fueled by the fact that I'm blind, and I've directed a film, but the film itself stands on its own, and that word is getting out there. Now I've just got to get on OPRAH!"

THIS IS NOT A REVIEW
You don't REALLY want to read my review of Rob Zombie's HALLOWEEN, do you?
Among the majority of hardcore Horror fans, there is nothing favorable going on out there.

Meanwhile, Rob Zombie's HALLOWEEN had a reasonably huge opening weekend. Studios like to pretend that the opening weekend is somehow meaningful. Yeah, like that great opening weekend for the Americanized GODZILLA remake: boy, didn't that set the freakin' world on fire? Or the Tim Burton PLANET OF THE APES re-imagining: Man, didn't that just reinvigorate the franchise? Just like the great opening weekend for the Peter Jackson KING KONG remake: Right now the Special Edition 3 DVD set of KING KONG (an actual extended version of a movie that was already twice as long as it should be) is selling for less than the CD soundtrack! Or the XMEN 3 sequel. They can't even GIVE XMEN 3 away by packaging it with the first two! So opening weekends are all about the marketing and really don't mean dick.

Is that not enough evidence? How about those great #1 opening weekends of the two MATRIX sequels? Now you can buy the two DVD sets of those for about $7.50 in most places. How about the great opening weekend of SIGNS. Do they even sell that DVD anywhere anymore?

In Rob's case, we all wanted to see if Zombie could really pull it off. I mean, between the huge fan following of the original film, which hasn't been destroyed despite the utter crap of HALLOWEEN III through infinity, plus the huge cache of being Rob Zombie, naturally there would be a huge opening weekend. What matters is how well it holds up next week: And the week after. HALLOWEEN has legs nearly 30 years long. POWERFUL legs if the still hot sales of the original, combined with the opening of Zombie's flick, sight unseen, is any indication.

I admit that it's often true, that I find more to like in a Horror Thriller movie than most (which is why I have the So-Bad-It's-Good rating), but that's because I'm me (I'm a reviewer, not a critic).

So if it's cool with you, I'd rather step away from reviewing Rob Zombie's HALLOWEEN for the moment. At this point, it would be like dog-piling, and I'm not into that shit.

Hey, how about we relive how incredibly cool AND goofy, the original HALLOWEEN is? If you MUST satisfy your thirst for snarky comments, read my review of HALLOWEEN III: SEASON OF THE WITCH.

TEXAS FRIGHTMARE NEXT YEAR

Michael Myers sliced through record Labor Day Weekend with Rob Zombies remake of HALLOWEEN (2007). Record earnings made it top the box office. We're celebrating this boon for horror cinema by welcoming cult idol Malcolm McDowell (
CAT PEOPLE [1982], FIRESTARTER 2) as an honored guest this February at the TEXAS FRIGHTMARE WEEKEND!

But he's not alone. Joining Dr. Loomis will be fellow Halloween sensations Scout Taylor Compton (WICKED LITTLE THINGS), Dee Wallace Stone (CRITTERS, THE FRIGHTENERS, THE LOST, VOODOO MOON, ABOMINABLE, THE PLAGUE), plus - by popular demand - Danielle Harris (URBAN LEGEND) and Kristina Klebe!

We're also throwing open TFW's online ticketing, which includes the oh-so coveted Celebrity Party Pass only available to the first 250 Early Weekend passholders!

More guest announcements soon ... The Dead Will Rise!

THE BIG CHEEZ OF CHIZINE

I've been asked to be the Indie Artist in Residence at BROKEN PENCIL for their upcoming horror issue, which hits stands at the end of October. The position entails blogging for them about independent horror-related, um, stuff, I guess. Ha.

I'm not entirely clear on what's expected, but the point is that I'll be blogging for them for the duration of the time the horror issue is on the stands, so that will be fun. I was honoured to be asked.

More info to come as the end of October approaches.

On a related note, BP very favourably reviewed my webzine ChiZine: Treatments of Light and Shade in Words.

END OF THE MONTH UPDATE
In August, between shooting my new short film and editing it, I didn't pay much attention to the website in August and the visitor count reflects that, dropping to 109,112 folks. I'll pay more attention to the website both because I love it and for y'all. But I'll also be dividing my attention to my short film. A Horror movie director I shall be! If any of you out there are trying to jump start your careers in writing and need some byline credits, feoamante.com is possibly the best way to get it. Contact me for more info, it's hard to miss my email all bright, bold, and yellow up there.

The top section in August that people flocked to was Top Ten Scary Movies. Small wonder; a quick yahoo or google search will reveal that, while nearly all Horror Thriller websites have their own top ten of scary movies, we're #1.

The #1 most visited review pages for the month of August are:

Movies: DAY OF THE DEAD

Stories: Hal Bodner's BITE CLUB

Comics: BRODIE'S LAW

And as always, thank you all for coming here and making feoamante.com so popular. Yall are the best and I'll keep making this site better!

The Plague

From Hal David Masonberg
TRAILER PLAGUE

Despite the mystery of how it got out there, the trailer for THE PLAGUE: WRITERS & DIRECTOR'S CUT has been appearing in several places. This is the trailer that was put together by writer/director Hal Masonberg in the hope of getting this cut released. See it while you can.

Here's one of the many sites (and a cool one at that!) showing the trailer: Christiane Divine. Just scroll down.

And if you haven't already, check out the web site the filmmakers of THE PLAGUE put together. It contains video interviews with cast and crew speaking openly about wanting this cut released, written interviews, articles and - most important - a petition to convince the film's distributor to get this version of the film out there where people can see it.

The story behind this film is pretty damn scary in and of itself and the Spreading The Plague web site is a wealth of information about what happened. It's quite the cautionary tale for filmmakers.

Enjoy!

TOMORROW'S DVDS TODAY!
RESIDENT EVIL two set hits the streets tomorrow in prep for the upcoming September release of RESIDENT EVIL:OUT OF ITS MISERY. Also, there are a few re-releases including DOG SOLDIERS, GACY, and a colorized version of THE HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL starring Vincent Price.

These are the Horror, Thriller, Mystery, and/or Suspense movies hitting DVD tomorrow.

CENTER OF THE WEB - From 1992 comes this Suspense Thriller starring Charles Napier (SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE [2004]).

DEMONS FROM HER PAST - Be warned. Despite the DVD cover and the title, this is actually a murder Suspense/Mystery and not a Horror Thriller.

THE MURDER GAME - A slasher made for little casher.

THE PRODIGY - At last this sucker is out on DVD and I can review it!

R.L. STINE'S THE HAUNTING HOUR: DON'T THINK ABOUT IT - In the 1990s, Stine is the man who single handedly set a bunch of kids to reading Horror and getting hooked. Long before J.K. Rowlings came down the back with her HARRY POTTER Dark Fantasies, Stine made the things in the shadowed corners REALLY scary!

STEPHANIE DALEY - Something isn't right with Stephanie (Amber Tamblyn: THE RING, THE GRUDEG 2). Did she murder her unborn child? Was she even aware that she was pregnant? Forensic Specialist Lydia Crane (Tylda Swinton: CONSTANTINE) is put on the case. Lydia is pregnant and that could help her delve into the mystery of Stephanie. But the more Lydia discovers, the closer to home the mystery gets.

UNHOLY - Direct to DVD from Anchor Bay Entertainment and starring Adrienne Barbeau (THE FOG, ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK).

WIND CHILL - Two college students take a road trip, but they don't even make it to the small town where the small town people are ignorant, stupid, and homicidal. No, they break down in the middle of nowhere, and that's where the ghosts of those who've died on that road do their thing at night.

And On Saturday -
Make your mark by being fan specific! Going by the moniker, Splat, today's birthday boy has carved a cult niche for himself by being a major fan of - Not JURASSIC PARK, not even JURASSIC PARK II, but specifically JURASSIC PARK III! Whether or not that works for you is a matter of taste, but he does have the most popular JURASSIC PARK III fansite on the net! Happy Birthday to
Webmaster Dan Finkelstein (DAN'S JPIII PAGE) who is 27.
