The Omega Man
QUICK BITES
RIP'N For Heston
One of the greatest actors who ever lived was best known for both his Bible movies AND his Horror Thriller films. Only he could (and only he ever) have pulled off such a unusual career combination. Charlton Heston (THE OMEGA MAN, PLANET OF THE APES, SOYLENT GREEN), has left.

Transformers
IESB EXCLUSIVE: TRANSFORMER 2 CHARACTER BREAKDOWNS PLUS NEW DECEPTICONS
Written by Robert Sanchez
(FeoNote: Any old fogie fans of Anime know that every clique of giant fighting robots, when the chips are down, will all lock their metal whatsis together in an orgy of klunkin' kumbayaa and fight as a super hybrid mechanoid. Did Voltron teach us nothing? Now Michael Bay's TRANSFORMERS sequel will go the same way.)

With a sequel to the mega-hit TRANSFORMERS coming, fans everywhere are excited about seeing old friends again on the big screen. OK BIG SPOILER WARNING PEOPLE! BEWARE...

The big questions are who will be back and what new characters will we see? Which new heroes and baddies will we get to see on the big screen this time around?

The 6th Day
TOMORROW'S DVDS TODAY!
These are the movies and shows coming out tomorrow, Tuesday, April 7, 2008, on DVD.

COLLECTIONS -
LEGENDS OF HOLLYWOOD-KINGS OF HORROR: BORIS KARLOFF AND BELA LUGOSI - This colection brings together on 5 DVDs, SCARED TO DEATH, WHITE ZOMBIE, DEVIL BAT, THE APE MAN, DICK TRACY MEETS GRUESOM, THE TERROR, THE MYSTERIOUS MR. WONG, THE APE, BLACK DRAGONS, HUMAN MONSTER, THE DEATH KISS, BOYS FROM BROOKLYN, THE SNAKE PEOPLE, THE INVISIBLE GHOST, THE GORILLA, and THE CORPSE VANISHES

BLU-RAY -
THE SIXTH DAY

These are the movies -

THE 4TH DIMENSION - When the going gets weird, the weird will gather up ERASERHEAD, IMMORTAL, this flick, and invite their friends over for movie night and pickled popcorn.

THE CELLAR DOOR - Believe me when I say that I can totally buy into someone trapped in an iron cage - even if it's thin wrought iron. I can even buy into someone being trapped in a cage of metal where, in their desperation they can twist the metal, and it will bend, but never break, making their prison all the more uncomfortable. But to have a reasonably strong, healthy woman (abused, sure, but all things considered) imprisoned in a wood crate with slats the width of corrugated cardboard? It just doesn't sell! Still, if you can't get enough of torture flicks, this should work for you.

DAY OF THE DEAD - Though it starred Ving Rhames (DAWN OF THE DEAD [2004]) and Mena Suvari (STUCK) and was directed by Steve Miner (HOUSE, LAKE PLACID), this remake bookends the idea that the only person who can make a decent remake of a Romero movie is the guy that Romero doesn't approve of: Zack Snyder.

HUSH... HUSH, SWEET CHARLOTTE - Hallucinatory and creepifying, this gem from 1965 stands up even today! Stars Bette Davis (WHATEVER HAPPENED TO BABY JANE?) and Joseph Cotton (BARON BLOOD).

MAGUS - A self-important fantasy Horror movie with far more fantasy than Horror and a few too many abrupt sub-plots, left this film unfocused. The cheesy CGI wasn't much help either. Stars Julie Strain (HEAVY METAL 2000).

P2 - A woman is trapped on Parking Lot level 2 and is having a dickens of a time getting up to Parking Lot Level 1. While this movie certainly had its moments, you couldn't help but think over and over, 'But its just one guy. How can he be everywhere at once and what kind of crazy parking lot seals its levels off? It's not that the movie didn't try to explain this, it just didn't explain it convincingly.

HAPPY HORROR THRILLER BIRTHDAYS TO -
And On Sunday -

Actor Candace Cameron Bure (I SAW WHAT YOU DID, MONSTER MASH: THE MOVIE, SHARON'S SECRET, VISITORS OF THE NIGHT, NO ONE WOULD TELL, NIGHT SCREAM) is 31.
You probably didn't know this about today's birthday boy, but in addition to his long time role in the TV hit, Cheers (Hey Cliffy!), he . . . Well, yes, he was in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back. But he was . . . Yes, he did have a recurring role in the first two Superman movies. But the thing is . . . yes, he is a successful voice-over actor these days: having done all six of the Pixar movies. But when he's being an actor in regular movies, he has done an awful lot of Horror/Thriller in his career! So Happy Birthday to
Actor John Ratzenberger (TWILIGHT'S LAST GLEAMING, WARLORD'S OF ATLANTIS, MOTEL HELL, OUTLAND, GOLIATH AWAITS, FIREFOX, WARLORDS OF THE 21ST CENTURY, HOUSE II, TICK TOCK, SPIRITED AWAY, MONSTERS, INC., THE INCREDIBLES) who is 61.
And On Saturday -
Writer W.D. Gagliani (SHADOWPLAYS, WOLF'S TRAP) is 49. Bill is both a bud as well as a friend on MySpace.com/WDGagliani.
Musician Jaye Vampira (EDEN'S ONSLAUGHT) is 24. Jaye is also a "friend" over at MySpace.com/JayeVampira.
Actor Dallas Page (THE DEVIL'S REJECTS, HOOD OF HORROR, SPLINTER, DRIFTWOOD) is 52. Look for his upcoming Horror Thriller movies with an expected 2009 release: GALLOWWALKER and HORRORWEEN.

Red Eye
DENNIS HOPPER'S SON SET TO LEAD WES CRAVEN'S NEXT
(FeoNote: Wes Craven is inexplicably returning to the tiresome "Serial Killer Stalking Teens" trope [and here he was doing so well with RED EYE]. Should I hazard a guess to say that he's stinging a bit over the wildy underestimated success of the direct to DVD feature he produced [with Ben Affleck and Matt Damon] FEAST? I only ask because he worked to get his movies THEM and CURSED into theaters, but didn't think enough of FEAST to do the same. And here is FEAST, selling so astoundingly well on DVD that sequels 2 and 3 are in production.)

Henry Lee Hopper, Denzel Whitaker, Shareeka Epps and Emily Meade are prepping to star in Wes Craven's tentatively titled horror thriller "25/8" for Rogue Pictures.

Hopper, the son of Dennis Hopper, will play the lead role of Bug, one of seven teens haunted by a serial killer who supposedly died when they were born 15 years earlier. The film takes place over the course of a day as the mystery of who (or what) is stalking the small-town high schoolers unfolds.

Ray Harryhausen
THE GREAT MAN SHARES HIS GLORY WITH RAY HARRYHAUSEN (On the Left)
From Scott Essman
RAY HARRYHAUSEN INTERVIEWS

How does one create an homage to the finest below-the-line cinema craftsman to ever have lived? Stop-motion animator and filmmaker Ray Harryhausen's achievements and influence are incalculable. Numerous giants in the world of cinema have cited his work, especially in THE SEVENTH VOYAGE OF SINBAD in 1958, as the most profound reason that they attempted a career in films.

In spring of 2004, Mr. Harryhausen took upon himself to provide a detailed overview of his career wit the first of two books, An Animated Life, co-written by Tony Dalton. Harryhausen, 87, who retired from making films in 1981, lives in England, but still makes journeys to his hometown of Los Angeles to meet with friends, colleagues and protégés. On April 16, 2004, in Burbank, CA, he took precious time out of his hectic schedule to reflect on the book, his pioneering career, and the future of animation in films throughout this exclusive 19-minute career-spanning interview, loaded with rare stills from throughout his many films and those of his key influence, Willis (KING KONG) O'Brien.

This interview is now available for the first time anywhere as a DVD premiere.

Brutal Massacre

From Ed Peters
BRUTAL MASSACRE: A COMEDY

BURBANK, CA – Anchor Bay Entertainment, the renowned industry leader in horror programming, announced the acquisition today of the North American home media distribution rights to Brutal Massacre: A Comedy, the irreverent mockumentary chronicling the world’s unluckiest horror film production. Written and directed by Stevan Mena (Malevolence), Brutal Massacre: A Comedy is a hilarious look into the chaotic world of low budget independent filmmaking, as a once-successful horror film director tries to make his comeback vehicle. Boasting a veritable “who’s who” of legendary horror and contemporary comedy stars, BRUTAL MASSACRE: A COMEDY delivers laughs in the best mockumentary tradition of This Is Spinal Tap and promises fans of horror and comedy a “Best in Horror-Show” performance!

Celebrating two genres, the cast of Brutal Massacre: A Comedy includes horror greats David Naughton (AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON); Ellen Sandweiss, Betsy Baker and Theresa Tilly, aka “The Ladies of The Evil Dead;,” Gunnar Hansen (THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE [1970]); and Ken Foree (DAWN OF THE DEAD [1979], FROM BEYOND, THE DEVIL'S REJECTS), paired with comedy stars Brian O’Halloran (Clerks, Chasing Amy); Gerry Bednob (The 40-Year Old Virgin, Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story) and Vincent Butta (The Pick-Up Artist).

A late spring theatrical release is anticipated, featuring engagements in New York and Los Angeles. Fans can also expect a Special Edition DVD, promising extensive bonus features that really do go behind-the-scenes!

BRUTAL MASSACRE: A COMEDY is becoming the next great cult horror film embraced by fans. Fangoria Magazine called the film "a Spinal Tap for horror filmmakers, a hilarious gift to genre fans!"

In the film, Naughton plays Harry Penderecki, a once heralded horror auteur who now finds himself on the outside looking in at Hollywood. Though renowned for such groundbreaking horror classics as I’ll Take the Ring Back and the Finger Too! and Sasquatch at the Mall, he hasn’t had a hit in a while and most in the industry have scratched his name off their “A” list.

But Harry isn’t completely down and out. He’s embarking on what he hopes to be his return to the big leagues with Brutal Massacre. Reuniting his longtime filmmaking team, Harry also has the entire production shadowed by documentarian Bert Campbell (Butta). But what starts as a successful convention appearance announcing the start of filming quickly devolves into a battle of Sisyphean proportions to capture even a single, usable frame of footage. Between incompetent special effects artists, temperamental actors, bad location advice, sexual shenanigans, on-set tragedies and the usual budget overruns, Harry struggles to keep his sanity while facing overwhelming obstacles to finish the picture and find himself at the top once again.

Visit the Official website of BRUTAL MASSACRE: A Comedy.

HAPPY HORROR THRILLER BIRTHDAY TO -
Today's birthday boy is still getting a pass based largely on his performances in a number of Thrillers made since 1999. Happy Birthday to
Actor Hugo Weaving (THE MATRIX - all, THE LORD OF THE RINGS - all, LITTLE FISH, V FOR VENDETTA, TRANSFORMERS) who is 48. Hugo is currently filming THE WOLF MAN, with an expected release in 2009. The movie is being directed by Joe Johnston (JURASSIC PARK III) and written by Andrew Kevin Walker (SE7EN, 8MM, SLEEPY HOLLOW). This is the movie script that was infamously re-written for Universal by David Self (THE HAUNTING [1999]). So nothing bad can come out of that arrangement. Right?

COMIC BOOK FESTIVAL

FeoNote: If you plan to be in the Los Angeles area April 6, you may want to know about the following -

Nuvein Foundation for the Literature and the Arts is holding a FREE comic book festival in the San Gabriel Valley on Sunday, April 6, 2008.

Comic book fans will get a chance to meet and buy books directly from independent comic book creators. The festival is being held by the Nuvein Foundation to promote the arts to the local community. The event is free to the public and all ages are welcome.

In addition to comic book creators and retailers exhibiting at the festival, there will be two free workshops where fans can learn techniques to write and draw comic books. The storytelling/drawing workshop will be taught by Rafael Navarro, creator of the comic book Sonambulo and currently a storyboard artist for The Spectacular Spider-Man. Rafael has recently won an Emmy Award for his work on Tutenstein. The writing workshop will be conducted by writer Mike Wellman of AtomicBasement.com and creator of Mac Afro. Both Mr. Navarro and Mr. Wellman are veterans of the comic book industry.

Also featured during the festival will be a live taping of the online talkshow, Planet Comic Book Radio hosted by Javier Hernandez. The hour long segment will feature interviews with the attending artists, with questions from the audience encouraged. The live show will be podcasted at a later date during Planet Comic Book Radio’s normal air time of Tuesday at 5pm. That episode, as well as the previous episodes, are available at PlanetComicBookRadio.com. In addition to hosting the radio talkshow, Javier Hernandez also writes and draws El Muerto, a comic book based on an Aztec mythology and the Mexican ‘Day of the Dead’. Javier also served as the Associate Producer of the live action film based on his comic book, starring Wilmer Valderrama and Tony Plana. In 2007, the film was released on DVD as "The Dead One". At the 2008 Whittier Film Festival, EL MUERTO won Best Feature.

Proceeds raised by the Nuvein Foundation go towards scholarships awarded to students of creative arts and arts program held to benefit local communities.

The San Gabriel Comic Book Festival will be at The Cuban Club of San Gabriel Valley, 10960 Lower Azusa Rd. El Monte, California, corner of Santa Anita and Lower Azusa, 11AM-5PM. Admission is free to the public.

Tom Piccirilli
TOM PICCIRILLI
From Tom Piccirilli
REALLY PICCIRILLI

THE MIDNIGHT ROAD has been nominated for an International Thriller Writers Award. The awards will be presented at ThrillerFest 2008 at the Grand Hyatt in New York City, where the winners will be announced July 12th.

THE COLD SPOT is due out from Bantam in less than a month now, folks.

Here's a new interview with me, done by the very hip Scotsman Allan Guthrie, author of such brilliant crime novels as HARD MAN, KISS HER GOODBYE, and the forthcoming SAVAGE NIGHT for his uber-cool website NOIR ORIGINALS.

While you're at his site, check it out at length. He's got tons of interviews, reviews, and info for all your crime fiction needs.

My crime novel THE FEVER KILL is almost sold out from the publisher Creeping Hemlock. The novel's been moving fast, thanks in no small part to the amazing packaging that publishers & designers RJ & Julia Sevin have come up with for the book.

HELLBOY: EMERALD HELL has been shipping from Amazon and showing up in stores and comic shops for a few weeks now. Been receiving lots of questions, so I thought I'd answer a bunch here:

Q: How'd you get involved with writing a Hellboy novel in the first place?

A: Ace writer & editor Chris Golden asked me to be a part of the HB anthology ODDER JOBS, and he and the good folks at Dark Horse enjoyed the piece enough that they were willing to take a look at a novel pitch. After providing a story outline about Big Red down in the southern swamps battling evil mystical preachers, rednecks, witchy women, deadly giant plants, killer gators, and mutant kiddies, they gave me the green light. These folks like their weird.

Q: Were you intentionally channeling Manly Wade Wellman & Silver John the Balladeer in your character "John Lament"?

A: Yep. I'm a hardcore Wellman fan, and anyone already familiar with my "Self" series will know that the Necromancer is something of a very dark version of Silver John. Lament is more in keeping with hillbilly John's kindly attitude, positive personality, and homespun magic. Since I decided not to include any other characters from the Hellboy stories, and since HB usually has some partner or sidekick to bounce off of, I decided that Lament would be a fun and interesting character for HB to pal around with.

Q: Do you know that the book is showing up as a graphic novel on some websites and that some bookstores are shelving it with the comics?

A: That's the nature of the beast. It's happened with every HB novel so far, and so long as it gets into the hands of the fans, I don't care where it gets shelved. If you can't find it in the fantasy section, it'll probably be among the graphic novels.

The great Ed Gorman's new political thriller SLEEPING DOGS is now available at bookstores everywhere. Scarf this bad boy up as soon as you can. Ed's one of the best out there, and he always offers up fiction that has a deeply set moral center, sharp writing, and characters we actually give a damn about. I'm a hardcore fan of his Sam McCain series as well, but then again, I'm a hardcore fan of everything he's ever written.
----------------------------
SHORT STUFF:

My novella "Loss," originally published in the now Stoker Award-winning anthology FIVE STROKES TO MIDNIGHT, edited by Hank Schwaeble and Gary Braunbeck, will see reprint in THE MAMMOTH BOOK OF BEST NEW HORROR #19, edited by Stephen Jones.

My tale "Bereavement," which also appeared in 5STM, will see reprint in A PRISONER OF MEMORY & 24 OF THE YEAR'S FINEST CRIME & MYSTERY STORIES edited by Ed Gorman & Martin H. Greenberg.

You can find my tale "Circling" in issue #1 of SHROUD. In issue #2 will be a collaboration I did with one of the most talented crime writers around, the amazing Ken Bruen.

Shroud Publishing will also be bringing out a crime novella of mine in a signed limited edition format sometime later this year. When I have more details and ordering info, I'll let you know.

Tasmaniac Publishing will be bringing out a signed limited edition crime novella as well. More info on that when it becomes available.

If you want to know even more about Tom Piccirilli, you should be at his website, TomPiccirilli.com.

Frontiers
STRANGE FRONTIER(S)
Though it has been out for a while, FRONTIER(S) has been a rather hard sell to the U.S. How hard a sale? Well consider that the writer and director, Xavier Gens, used this movie as his calling card to get a job directing HITMAN in 2006. HITMAN was finished in time for a release in U.S. theaters on November 2007, and was released in 2008 on DVD, while FRONTIER(S) continued to cool its heels in left-over land.

Though it was finally released in its homeland of France back in July of 2007, it has yet to see wide theatrical release there.

The original FRONTIER(S) portrayed nearly a decade of young Muslim men vioelnce against French women (raping and murdering) and setting cars on fire (while people are in them) in Paris, as the victims of the newly elected conservative president (who hadn't even been sworn in by the time this movie was started).

It also portrays street criminals and thugs as victims of the violence. In fact, they are the protagonists / heroes.

Finally it portrays people who don't live in cities as thick-skulled murderous cannibals.

But hey, it's just a movie, right?

That said, I would expect a different "edit" for American audiences.

Check out the latest synopsis -

"Alone in a Paris plagued by deadly race riots, the young and beautiful Yasmine is looking for a way out. In her desperation, she turns to her shady ex-boyfriend. Together with his two thug friends, they pull off a bold heist and head for the border.

With the police close behind, they hide out in a seemingly peaceful inn. But the mysterious innkeeper is hiding a secret more terrifying than anything they could ever imagine. Trapped in an endless maze of tunnels crawling with hungry subhuman cannibals, they must fight to survive their bloody initiation into the innkeeper's evil family cult."

Check out the new Official website, FrontiersUnrated.

According to imdb.com, FRONTIER(S) theatrical release in the U.S. will be a patch job, as it gets a limited release on May 9 and then straight to DVD on May 13. This is basically a Straight to DVD job. Doesn't mean it won't be good though. Stars Samuel Le Bihan (LE PACTE DES LOUPS).
