The Signal
GET THE CRAZY
Last year I saw this exceptionally cool Science Fiction Horror Thriller movie called THE SIGNAL. It was everything WHITE NOISE wanted to be but wasn't. It was everything THE PULSE wanted to be but failed. Watching THE SIGNAL I experienced one of those special theater moments where I was practically jumping out of my seat to cheer the film. As I said in my review, THE SIGNAL stands on par with movies like John Carpenter's THE THING, David Cronenberg's VIDEODROME or, for that matter, Cronenberg's THE FLY. In fact, I'm afraid to tell you much more about it because I don't want to oversell it.

Actor Anessa Ramsey (Mya Denton in the movie) wrote in to say,
"Cross your fingers for us, and know that it costs very little to enter your film into Sundance. We never dreamed *any* of this would happen!"
Anessa Ramsey

Anessa will be in Chicago this weekend along with co-star A. J. Bowen for a Fangoria Weekend of Horrors Q&A panel about THE SIGNAL.

Actor Scott Poythress (Clark in the movie) wrote in to say,
"Yo Feo!! Thanks for the kind words man, we're incredibly excited and nervous about this weekend. Opening weekend is gonna play a huge role in the distribution of prints for us, so if you'd like to urge your readers to get out and see the movie THIS weekend, it would be incredibly cool. I'm very thankful for your support and kudos brother. Thanks again,
take care,"
Scott "Clark" Poythress

Count Smokula
HE LIKES THE NIGHTLIFE SINCE THE DAY THAT HE DIED
An interview with 496-year-old undead Smokesylvanian multi-instrumentalist Count Smokula.

Count Smokula is a 496-year-old undead Smokesylvanian musician and member of the Rockabilly Hall of Fame. He has appeared in a promo for America's Got Talent and also appeared on Who Wants to Be a Superhero. He has been featured on The Tom Green webcast and pictured in the USA Today. He regularly hosts burlesque events and he can write songs about people he just met. I asked him about all of these things and he responded in his thick Smokesylvanian accent.

Grimm
From Eric J
ERIC'S GETTING GRIMM

I have learned that this coming Wednesday is the day that you all can expect to see my issue of Grimm Fairy Tales, #21, The Sorcerer's Apprentice on sale at your local comic shop! Now, I take it that some of you may have been able to get it last week, I have heard from my inside source ;) that it is on lists to ship in the Chicago area this week, so, hopefully that means that you'll all have access to it this week. AICN did a really complementary review of the issue. You can find it here it's in the 'Indy Jones' section. Zenescope has a discussion thread about it on their boards for those of you that would like to chime in. You can find the thread here. So far the book seems to be getting some very nice feedback, so thanks to those of you that have shared with us. :) And, don't forget, you can check out some preview pages in the SA gallery. Now if you want to see them come to life with Nei's amazing color work, you'll have to pick up the book, but the pages in the gallery are a nice little taster for you.

Continued at EricJ.

Eric J is the co-creator of the Thriller Mystery comic, REX MUNDI, which will soon be a motion picture starring Johnny Depp in the title role.

GETCHER ACCURATE PREDICTIONS HERE
Back on January 8, of this year, I predicted that BLU-RAY would win hands down and that was that.

I made this prediction despite the fact that sales of HD and BLU-RAY were pretty much neck and neck during the Christmas Holidays. What did I base my prediction on? The fact that sales of the plwyers weren't the only factor to consider. Read my blaag at MySpace for the full story: BLINDED BY SCIENCE.

Then check out this news story at VFXWorld.com, though the headline says it all.
Toshiba To Phase Out HD DVD.

For my part and on the behalf of yall, I won't be posting any new HD-DVD affiliate purchase links on the site and I'll start taking out the old ones as time permits.

Fires Rising
From Michael Laimo
LAIMO RISING

My fifth Leisure Books horror novel, FIRES RISING, has been released and is now available wherever books are sold.

FIRES RISING is a true horror novel, in every respect of the word. From the prologue to the final chapter, this book bleeds horror. It’s a visceral romp of terror that takes place in the streets of Manhattan, at the onset of apocalypse. There's something here for every horror fan: demons and zombies and religious desecration. It is the most visceral book I've ever written. It's a horror novel, in every sense of the word, with monsters and action in nearly every chapter.

For those of you familiar with my past works, FIRES RISING has the claustrophobic intensity of DEEP IN THE DARKNESS, the in-your-face extremes of THE DEMONOLOGIST, and the dark religious elements of DEAD SOULS.

As well, I’ve written a sequel to my bestselling Stoker nominated novel DEEP IN THE DARKNESS. I truly want this book in your hands. But the only way this will happen is if you put FIRES RISING in your hands.

Soon I’ll be announcing a contest testing you on the contents of FIRES RISING. So get your copy now, read it, and get ready to win.

As always, I appreciate your support. It means as much to me now as it did with my very first novel ATMOSPHERE. As long as you keep reading, I'll be able to keep writing.

I am VERY pleased with FIRES RISING. I think it is my best work to date. My editor, and the few critics who've read it agree, which allows me to say this with conviction.

Scarecrow Gods
From Weston Ochse
SCARECROW GODS

in paperback!!! Pass it on!
In May, Delirium Books wil re-release SCARECROW GODS in trade paperback. Originally published in 2005 in limited and deluxe editions only, the book sold out and readership was severely limited. Since then there has been a call for this novel to become available to the masses. Everywhere I go I'm asked when will Scarecrow Gods be out in paperback. Everyone wants to read it and find out if the buzz is true. Not only did Scarecrow Gods win the Bram Stoker Award for Superior Achievement in First Novel, but it has been on many people's Top Ten Lists for not only the year it was published or the decade, but for all time.

I'm both humbled and excited about the reaction so far. But if that's what people thought about it when only a few read it, then how will the book be received when it hits stores everywhere? I can't wait. The publisher is still working on the new cover. When he finishes, I'll let everyone know. The initial print run will be high, but probably not high enough based on the interest.

Weston Ochse (SCARY REDNECKS and other INBRED HORRORS w/David Whitman, NATURAL SELECTION) is a feoamante.com alumni.

The Invasion

TOMORROW'S DVDS TODAY!
These are the movies and shows coming out tomorrow, Tuesday, February 19, 2008, on DVD.

Television - Nope, nothing.

HIGH DEFINITION -
HD-DVD -
THE INVASION

These are the movies -

BLACK WATER - Based on true events (Ha! Yeah! Anyway...) comes this tale of a tourist boat which wrecks and leaves its survivors stranded up in a tree, while a huge crocodile waits below for one of them to lose their grip. The three tourists were up there for over three days before rescue came. Note I said rescue came and not, rescue saved them. To find out what happened, you'll have to watch this flick.

CATACOMBS - From the producers of SAW comes this 2006 Unrated Director's Cut finally available on DVD. It tells the tale of a bunch of crazy French kids and one American (so we'll have at least one person to feel sorry for) who go caterwalling in the French catacombs. This movie continues the interest in underground beasties started in 2004 with the German Horror Thriller CREEPS and the 2005 English Horror Thriller, DESCENT.

EYES FRONT - Tormented serial killer on the hunt for another victim meets tormented newbie killer who would love to blame someone else for his crime. Stars Michael Madsen (SPECIES, KILL BILL, SIN CITY).

FOREST PRIMEVAL - Okay, so we have this freakish earthquake, right? And it unleashes evil demons into the forest, and ... awa-ay we go! Hot damn we got a movie!

FRANKENSTEIN'S BLOODY NIGHTMARE - Shot on Super-8 film no less (where the hell did he find Super 8 film?), John R. Hand wrote, directed, produced, and even starred as the lead in this cinematic something.

GABRIEL - A dark goth style drama about a weightlifting angel named Gabriel. Gabriel is an Arc Angel, come to bring the light. But there are also Fallen Angels, come to bring the darkness. The Fallen Angels are led by Lucifer, the Angel of ... er... light, who lives in hell, by a lake of fire, which is rather bright and well lit. I mean, being fire and all and the size of a pretty damn big lake considering. In between Heaven and Hell is Purgatory, which should be, but isn't quite, earth. Anyway, that's what the angels are fighting over. I know its all very confusing, but what do you expect when a story is based on the Bible?

THE HANDS OF ORLAC - This is a pretty far sighted film when you consider that it was made in 1924. Orlac is a concert pianist whose hands are amputated in a train accident. A surgeon does a hand transplant for Orlac, and while that would appear all nice and neat, this is a gory, grand guignol Thriller. So the new hands came from a murderer. Based on the book by the late Maurice Renard, the transplanted members get busy murdering (you'd think that Orlac's arms, legs, as well as the rest of his body would have a say in what the hands do, but you'd be WRONG!). This movie proved so inspiring that it launched a whole new sub-genre of Transplant Horror books (THE ORGAN DONOR) and movies (THE EYE). This was the original.

NIGHTMARE DETECTIVE - from 2006 and Dimension Films "Extreme" brand, comes this Unrated Asian Horror Thriller about a guy who gets into people's dreams and makes them kill themselves in real life. Watch for the inevitable American remake which WON'T be titled, A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET.

THE PERFECT WITNESS - Think of MR. BROOKS only pretty much the same thing plus a camera.

REVAMPED - So there you are. You work hard, your company has noticed, you're finally on the fast track to success, and some damn vampire comes along and bites you, leaving you to exist as one of the undead. Talk about making some serious life changes! Then, as if things couldn't get any worse, there are a bunch of underground vampires who've just about had enough of all of these newbie vampires stumbling around and are out to do something about it! What's more, there is also this group of humans who are all gung-ho militaristic and want to kill all vampires. Stars Reggie Bannister (PHANTASM).

SECRETS OF A SOUL - From 1926: A scientist has a lot on his brain pan as he deals with his irrational fear of knives, the obssesive desire to murder his wife, and fantastic nightmares that are driving him mad, MAD I tell you! Like the HANDS OF ORLAC, this is another of the early German Expressionist movies that were far ahead of their time.

SPIRAL - From Adam Green, the guy who brought you HATCHET, comes SPIRAL, the story of a disturbed telemarketer.

And with the advent of his last two television series where he played Doctor Who and in his new series as Claude in HEROES, its time to wish a Happy Birthday to
Actor Christopher Eccleston (DEATH AND THE COMPASS, SHALLOW GRAVE, eXistenZ, HEART, THE OTHERS, 28 DAYS LATER) is 44.
Writer / Director Eric Red (THE HITCHER, NEAR DARK, COHEN AND TATE, BLUE STEEL, BODY PARTS, BAD MOON, UNDERTOW, THE HITCHER II, THE HITCHER [2007]) is 47. Eric has three upcoming Horror Thrillers. 100 FEET, starring Famke Janssen (THE FACULTY, XMEN [all]), has an expected 2008 release and STOPPING POWER has been re-scheduled from last year to a projected 2009 release. Ghosts in the Machine

From Brian Tuthill
MASSIFY UNDERTAKING

Audiences offered once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to re-imagine the horror genre and launch their careers

Los Angeles, CA (February 11, 2008) – Creative minded people who’ve always wanted a chance to break through and work on a major motion picture now have their chance. After Dark Films and massify.com are challenging raconteurs, horror hounds, filmmakers and regular folk alike to bring their creativity to a full-length horror film through the newly launched online network, massify.com. This venture, the first feature film developed entirely via the internet, will be released by After Dark Films as part of its 8 Films to Die For® in 2008. The initiative, dubbed “Ghosts in the Machine,” will give the massify.com community the tools to create, submit, choose the idea and cast this unique motion picture. One filmmaker will be a producer on the movie, and four actors will have the chance to work on a feature film.

Massify
Aspiring filmmakers will have the opportunity to create a range of content along the way, including pitching ideas, auditioning for roles and creating ancillary materials, like a movie poster or song. The initiative will have a series of laddered rounds. The first, the “pitch phase,” will seek out the best new horror ideas, narrowing them down to one, which the script will be based on. This will mark the beginning of the casting round, in which both aspiring and professional actors are invited to upload audition videos to play the four major roles in the feature film. The community will then vote and elect ten male and ten female semifinalists to fly to Los Angeles for screen tests. Once the idea and the cast are chosen, the movie will move into production – all of which will be documented reality-TV style on massify.com. As the film nears completion, the Massify community will pitch marketing ideas that will be used as keyart during the release of the films well and will have the opportunity to score music to completed scenes.

“The ‘Ghosts in the Machine’ contest will offer fans a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to bring the next generation of horror film to the screen,” stated After Dark Films CEO Courtney Solomon. “We are confident that in the minds of passionate fans and young filmmakers, the next great horror idea is being dreamt up right now, and eagerly anticipate the opportunity to turn one inspired idea into a feature horror film in a way that has never been done before.”

“This is the perfect launch for our new platform,” stated Massify President and Co-Founder Kenneth Woo. “Our goal is to provide a place where those who passionately make and act in films can collaborate directly with those who passionately watch films. And few communities are as passionate as the horror community.”

Massify.com will be giving updates all the way through the production and post production process so that fans can watch and be participatory in the film they helped create and grow. Audiences can also log onto horrorfestonline.com to catch updates of the production.

HAPPY HORROR THRILLER BIRTHDAYS TO -
This man has horrified and terrified billions of people in the last one hundred plus years. People like Tim F. LaHaye and Jerry B. Jenkins, who have both claimed to have studied his work, have made themselves rich writing bare-faced and fraudulent lies about him, and yet the truth endures. So Happy Birthday to the late
Scientist Charles Darwin (Begin amazon.com links - ORIGIN OF THE SPECIES, THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF CHARLES DARWIN 1809-1882 - end amazon.com links) whose remains, what remains of them, is 199. For extra fun, here are a few SF/Horror movies made by people who have no idea how evolution works: 20 MILLION MILES TO EARTH, CHILDREN OF THE DAMNED, EVOLUTION, PLANET OF THE APES, HIDEOUS SUN DEMON, HUMANOIDS FROM THE DEEP, JURASSIC PARK (Sorry Ian, but no. Yes, life will always find a way, but not by 2:00 this afternoon.), A SOUND OF THUNDER, XMEN (Sorry Jean Grey, but no. The next stage of Evolution isn't based upon a single mutant, but whether or not that mutant can survive long enough to create progeny that successfully carry that mutation to their own progeny).
Normally this actress would never have her birthday celebrated here since only about 8 of her over 38 films have been in our genre. And yet it is those very films she is most remembered for by filmgoers. So Happy Birthday
Actor Christina Ricci (THE ADDAMS FAMILY, ADDAMS FAMILY VALUES, CASPER, BASTARD OUT OF CAROLINA, SLEEPY HOLLOW, BLESS THE CHILD, MIRANDA, THE GATHERING, CURSED) is 28.
This birthday greeting goes out to cult Horror movie anti-hero,
Actor Michael Ironside (STONE COLD DEAD, DOUBLE NEGATIVE, SCANNERS, VISITING HOURS, AMERICAN NIGHTMARE, THE SURROGATE, HELLO MARY LOU: PROM NIGHT II, WATCHERS, TOTAL RECALL, THE VAGRANT, KILLER IMAGE, NIGHT TRAP, STARSHIP TROOPERS, THE OMEGA CODE, HEAVY METAL 2000, MINDSTORM, THE SHAFT, CHILDREN OF THE CORN: REVELATION, DEEP WATER, Masters of Horror: THE V WORD, and way way more) is 57.

QUICK BITE
The man who is fond of movies starting with the letter "D", Director Neil Marshall (DOG SOLDIERS, DESCENT), delivers the promised pics from his upcoming film, DOOMSMDAY to his blog at MySpace.com.

ROY SCHIEDER HAS LEFT
To fans of Horror Thrillers, Roy will always be remembered as the cinematic Police Chief Brody ("That's one bad hat, Harry!") in Spielberg's breakout movie, JAWS. Roy spent much of his career making Horror, Thriller, and Mystery movies including THE MARATHON MAN, JAWS 2, LAST EMBRACE, STILL OF THE NIGHT, BLUE THUNDER, 52 PICK-UP, NIGHT GAME, NAKED LUNCH, THE RUSSIA HOUSE, WILD JUSTICE, THE RAGE, THE DOORWAY, TIME LAPSE, DRACULA II, and DRACULA III.

Expect to see one more Schieder Thriller for 2008: DARK HONEYMOON.

So long Roy, and thanks for all the fish.

Frontier(s)

From Brian Tuthill
FILMS WITHOUT FRONTIER(S)

Los Angeles, CA — After Dark Films has acquired the North American rights to distribute the horror film FRONTIER(S), it was announced today by After Dark Films CEO Courtney Solomon. Written and directed by Xavier Gens (HITMAN), the film will be released first theatrically on May 9th, in select markets, and then on DVD on May 13th by Lionsgate, through After Dark’s output deal with the studio. After Dark Films formulated the film’s innovative plan for release in keeping with the expressed wishes of horror fans to have the chance to see the mesmerizing film theatrically - where it’s beauty lends itself to the big screen - before releasing it to DVD, when horror aficionados everywhere will have the opportunity to see the film they have eagerly anticipated ever since word leaked out about its acquisition. This release plan allows After Dark to provide movie lovers, especially horror fans, with what they deserve: the absolutely best viewing experience in whichever format they prefer, without having to wait.

Samuel Le Bihan (LE PACTE DE LOUPS - Brotherhood of the Wolf) stars in this horror film set in France and revolves around Yasmine, her ex-boyfriend and his two friends who are entrenched in the Paris riots, and have stolen a large sum of money before they head for the Danish border. On their way, they check into a motel where things appear to be too good to be true. They find that looks are deceiving as this motel rapidly turns into a house of horrors run by a Neo-Nazi family. The film’s additional cast includes Maud Forget, Estelle Lefébure, Patrick Ligardes, David Saracino, Karina Testa and Aurelien Wiik.

“Xavier created a film that’s challenging and provocative, with an emotional impact that horror films don’t always deliver,” stated Solomon. “Given this, we wanted to offer audiences the chance to see it, both communally on a large screen in the theater as well as in the comfort of their homes. We also wanted to present the film the way Xavier imagined it: uncut, unedited, and unaltered in any way to comply with a specific rating. This is a prime example of the type of film we will continue to deliver – a great horror flick that delves far deeper than most films of this genre.”

Gens recently directed Hitman, starring Timothy Olyphant and Dougray Scott. He is repped by Endeavor.

Chosen
From Ted Dekker
FIND THE BOOK, WIN THE CHEVY

In Christian Horror Mystery writer, Ted Dekker’s latest simultaneous releases, CHOSEN and INFIDEL, four young warriors from another reality are on a quest to find the 7 lost Books of History. In 2008, that quest comes to our world.

Get ready for a nationwide treasure hunt like no other that blurs the line between fiction and reality in a search for the actual Lost Books.

Registration for the game begins in January and the search launches in March. What awaits those who rise to the challenge? An online quest that will test their wits, and plunge them into a world of espionage and ancient secrets where nothing is as it seems and the truth is the most dangerous discovery.

The way will be paved with adventure, but also with great weekly prizes. And the one who solves the ultimate riddle and finds the final Lost Book will drive home in our Grand Prize—a 2008 Chevy Cobalt.

It all begins with Chosen and Infidel, landing in stores before Christmas. Buy your copy now to see the adventure unfold.

Find the Book, Win the Chevy.

Ted Dekker is the author of THR3E and HOUSE, which became movies in 2006 and 2007 respectively.

Hard Candy
PAIGE TO STAR IN RAIMI'S HELL
February 9, 2008
By Gregg Kilday
Ellen Page (HARD CANDY), hot off the success of "Juno," will star in the horror film DRAG ME TO HELL, Sam Raimi's first directorial outing since SPIDER-MAN 3.

Universal has acquired domestic and select international rights to "Hell," which Raimi wrote with his brother Ivan Raimi. The picture was developed at Ghost House, the joint venture between Mandate Pictures and Raimi and his producing partner Rob Tapert.

Continued at The Hollywood Reporter.com.

30 Days of Night
Read a connected piece at FirstShowing.net where one of their reporters says the following: "...what about Evil Dead I or II or Army of Darkness? That is the exact kind of horror we're speaking of when we reference this movie that Ellen Page is in and Sam Raimi is directing. Have you seen either of those? They're hardly horror, at least by today's definition -"
The article: FirstShowing.net.
Then the comment at #5.

FeoNote: HARD CANDY Director David Slade goes on to direct 30 DAYS OF NIGHT. HARD CANDY screenwriter, Brian Nelson goes on to co-write 30 DAYS OF NIGHT. 30 DAYS OF NIGHT is produced by Sam Raimi and Robert G. Tapert. HARD CANDY Actor Ellen Page goes on to be directed by Sam Raimi. I'm guessing Sam liked the movie.

No word yet on Raimi coordinating for any future projects with HARD CANDY actor Patrick Wilson. Don't cry for Patrick though. He has a Horror Thriller coming out this year (PASSENGERS) and is currently filming WATCHMEN as Night Owl. HARD CANDY was ten pictures ago for Patrick, so he's doing fine.

Writer/Musician John Shirley (Books: DEMONS, CRAWLERS, AND THE ANGEL WITH TELEVISION EYES, DOOM, DARKNESS DIVIDED, Music: Blue Oyster Cult, Film: THE CROW, TWISTS OF TERROR [TV]) who is 55.
Writer Mark Worthen (VICIOUS SHIVERS, OPEN GRAVES, THICKER THAN WATER) is 46.
