FEBRUARY FEB. 7 QUICK BITE From Derek Gunn Two new Vampire Apocalypse books are coming: VAMPIRE APOCALYPSE: Descent into Chaos is with the publishers and should be released late 2008/2009. The third book in the series, VAMPIRE APOCALYPSE: Fallout is nearing completion. VAMPIRE APOCALYPSE is under option by Richard Finney (THE 8th PLAGUE), an LA-based Producer-Screenwriter who has worked with such filmmakers as Steven Speilberg, Mel Gibson and George Clooney and a screen adaptation is in development - Details are available on IMDb. Finney says that he was attracted to Gunn’s twist on the rather played-out vampire genre. “It seems like we've [already] seen everything, but this novel puts forth a [new] take on the universe. The original concept will allow us as filmmakers to explore new terrain in the subgenre. Gunn’s story also takes the sexy posturing out of vampires and turns them back to what they are: bloodsucking animals that feed on humans. We’re very excited to be working with an author as clever as Derek!” Fangoria.com, Jan '07. In support of the Vampire Apocalypse series, a new web site, vampireapocalypse.com is now live and here you can read about the Vampire Apocalypse universe, excerpts, reviews, the latest screen adaptation news and other news and fiction from Derek Gunn. Derek is a member of the Horror Writers Association and The British Fantasy Society. He will be guesting at P-Con in March and Octocon in October, both of which are Horror, Science Fiction and Fantasy Conventions in Dublin, Ireland. Derek is also planning on making his first visit to Fantasycon in Nottingham, UK next September. CREEKERS From Ed Lee, The Master of Hardcore Horror! Crick City is a small hick town. Violent, mean and dirt-poor, it's a place nobody wants to call home. But for homicide cop Phil Straker, it is home. And now someone - or something - is turning his boyhood town into a bloody sideshow of mutilation and gruesome carnage. They're called Creekers. Centuries old, driven by rage and lust for revenge, they move through the deep, dark woods - deformed, shadowy outcasts with twisted faces and blood-red eyes. Now, as the moon hangs low over their ancient house, they're gathering for a harvest of terror and death Crick City will never forget... Necro Publications releases the second edition trade paperback in March! From Ed Peters Adapted for the screen and directed by Chris Sivertson (I KNOW WHO KILLED ME), The Lost is a suburban fairy tale gone horribly wrong. For sadistic sociopath Ray Pye (Marc Senter, I KNOW WHO KILLED ME) and his friends, small-town life is a dead-end road of sex, drugs, liars and losers. Ray’s charm, intelligence and good looks are matched only by his insatiable compulsion to kill. And what begins with a sudden act of senseless violence will climax in a mind-blowing frenzy of depravity… with the worst still to come! The Lost also boasts a stellar supporting cast, including Michael Bowen (MUTANT, KILL BILL, LOST [TV]), Dee Wallace-Stone (THE HOWLING, CRITTERS, THE FRIGHTENERS, ABOMINABLE, VOODOO MOON, THE PLAGUE, Rob Zombie's HALLOWEEN), Ed Lauter (KING KONG [1976], PYTHON, STARSHIP TROOPERS 2, THE NUMBER 23), Megan Henning (I KNOW WHO KILLED ME), and Erin Brown aka Misty Mundae (Masters of Horror: SICK GIRL). Monica O'Rourke of feoamante.com said, "THE LOST is a triumph in independent filmmaking." With bonus features like these, “losing” yourself within The Lost will be easy as pie: Widescreen (2.35:1) presentation, enhanced for 16x9 televisions Audio commentary with novelists Jack Ketchum and Monica O’Rourke Audition Footage Outtakes Storyboard Sequence Trailer Thomas J. McLean goes to THE EYE doctor, Asylum, to find out all about the creepy vfx for this latest Americanization of an Asian horror hit. Visual effects are, at their core, a trick played on the eyes of moviegoers that are not dissimilar from the tricks Jessica Alba's character thinks her new corneal transplants are playing on her in THE EYE (opening Feb. 1 from Lionsgate). FEB. 6 OLD REVIEW GETS A NEW UPDATEYou never know who will stumble over a review here at Feo Amante's Horror Thriller. Yesterday I got an email from Patrick Simmons, who did the Special Effects on a little movie called THE KINDRED back in 1986. The movie starred Rod Steiger (THE AMITYVILLE HORROR [1979], MARS ATTACKS!, END OF DAYS), Kim Hunter (PLANET OF THE APES [1968]), David Allen Brooks (MANHUNTER, JACK FROST 2), Amanda Pays (LEVIATHAN), Talia Balsam (CRAWLSPACE), and Peter Frechette (INSIDE MAN). Patrick had a correction for me - an insider tip that does not appear at imdb.com. So read the review and check out his Reader Response. Go To THE KINDRED. HAPPY HORROR THRILLER BIRTHDAY TO-
FEB. 5 HAPPY HORROR THRILLER BIRTHDAY TO -Without him, there'd be no ALIEN. His work was the best thing in SPECIES and the only thing that has kept that franchise alive. Because of him, all Horror movie creatures have lips that move, complete bodies. Just as he was inspired by H. P. Lovecraft, so this artist has inspired thousands of writers, musicians, artists, and movie going generations with his fantastic art. Hail and Happy birthday to Artist H. R. Giger (Books: NECRONOMICON, NECRONOMICON II, BIOMECHANICS, SPECIES DESIGN, FILM DESIGN, THE MYSTERY OF SAN GOTTARDO. Film: ALIEN [all], POLTERGIEST II, TEITO TAISEN, SPECIES [all], KILLER KONDOM, ALIEN VS PREDATOR [all]) is 68.
FEB. 4 From Ed Peters Directed by David Flores (BOA VS PYTHON, LAKE PLACID 2) and written & produced by Kevin VanHook (FROST: PORTRAIT OF A VAMPIRE, VOODOO MOON), Sands of Oblivion stars Adam Baldwin (PREDATOR 2, SERENITY, THE THIRST), Morena Baccarin (SERENITY), Academy Award® winner George Kennedy (CREEP SHOW 2, THE TERROR WITHIN) and Dan Castellaneta (THE SIMPSON'S TREEHOUSE OF HORROR) as Cecil B. DeMille. First broadcast on the SCI-FI Channel, SANDS OF OBLIVION will be presented in a special "Director’s Cut" edition, featuring additional footage not seen in the original airing. A modern day excavation crew lead by soon-to-be divorced archaeologist couple Jesse and Alice Carter (Baldwin and Baccarin) have uncovered the secret that DeMille tried in vain to bury: the set holds the spirit of a vengeful Egyptian god, trapped in a smuggled artifact amongst the movie props. Unleashing an ancient centuries-old horror, it will be up to Jesse and Alice, along with an Iraq War combat veteran (Victor Webster: WISHMASTER 4) to recapture the vile fury of ages past. Fans will have fun unearthing the following value-added treasures on the DVD: * Widescreen (1.78:1) presentation, enhanced for 16x9 televisions
TOMORROW'S DVDS TODAY! Collections - Movies on DVD - BONE SICKNESS - Kristen tries some alternative medicine for her terminally ill husband. This gives him an alternative reaction: Not the hoped for kind. THE BRAVE ONE - Actor Jodie Foster (SILENCE OF THE LAMBS), in what seemed to be damage control, claimed that this movie might be too sophisticated for audiences. I guess we'll never know, since a majority of sophisticated people never went to see it. I'm sure there is something incredibly elevated about a shoot-'em-up style revenge-flick remake of DEATH WISH, I only wish I was sophisticated enough to know what that was. Directed by Neil Jordan (IN DREAMS). CROC - Michael Madsen (SPECIES, KILL BILL, SIN CITY) is the Corc Hunter, out to capture Delilah, a Thailand Croc-Show attraction that has left the farm and is feasting on tourists! DEADHOUSE - Some friends in a car go on a trip. Their car breaks down. They seek help in a rural house (Not to be confused with everything from HORROR HOTEL to ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW to THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE and beyond), and get captured. Will they escape? You know the drill. DEMON SEDUCTION - Earth scientists create a synthesized alien-human hybrid with advanced DNA. Aliens from outer space must have the formula so that they can survive. The aliens morph into hot females and have sex with the scientists so the eggheads will give them the secret formula. Can the scientists sexually convinced? If not, things will get gory! I can't help but feel that, whoever put up the money for this filmmic concept uttered the words "You know, that might just be crazy enough to work!" DESCENT (Original NC-17 Version) - This DESCENT, starring Rosario Dawson, is not to be confused with DESCENT, about the gals in the cave. HOME MADE - It took a while, but the infamous Jack Hess, snuff film maker, has finally been caught. But catching him was only the first part. Now his victims, locked away in places only Hess knows where, must be found before Jack commits still more murder while in custody. KILLER PAD - Robert Englund (DEAD & BURIED, A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET, PYTHON, 2001 MANIACS, DANCE OF THE DEAD, HATCHET) directed his own direct to DVD movie! Will it be any good? Go see for yourself. You know you want to anyway. NAKED BENEATH THE WATER - Since 2006 this flick has been looking for a distribution home. At last it found one with Under The Bed Films. THE PHANTOM CREEPS - From 1939 comes 241 minutes of the Bela Lugosi classic on a single disc. ROXY HUNTER & THE MYSTERY OF THE MOODY GHOST - Hey! Kids need Mystery and Horror too! SABBATH - Here come the zombies! STORM WARNING - Dimension Films via their Extreme Distribution arm, brings us this movie from Jamie Blanks, the director of URBAN LEGEND and VALENTINE. WEIRDSVILLE - Not only is this movie weird, it stars Matt Frewer (DAWN OF THE DEAD [2004])! WINTERBEAST - From 1991 comes this underground classic that's so bad its brilliant! How bad? People are attacked by possessed totem poles! Do I mean monsters that look like totem poles? No, I mean totem poles! Do I mean actors who dress like totem poles and run around killing people? NO! NO! I mean, inanimate totem poles! Do I mean inanimate totem poles that stand there and do nothing but when people touch them they... NO! NO! NO! Some movies are so bad they're a lesson in what NOT to do. WINTERBEAST has no lesson, no logic, no meaning, and no point. The only question it raises with every scene is, "What the HELL were they thinking?" This is so bad I cannot explain the awfulness! SEE WINTERBEAST! Few people thought today's birthday boy would get to be this old, least of all him! Happy Birthday to Musician / Actor Alice Cooper (Music: WELCOME TO MY NIGHTMARE, POISON, DRAGONTOWN, Movies: PRINCE OF DARKNESS, FREDDY'S DEAD: THE FINAL NIGHTMARE, THE ATTIC EXPEDITIONS) who is 60. Alice has a cameo in the upcoming Horror comedy, HORRORWEEN, currently in production. The man who brought Zombies to the fore of monsters like Dracula and Frankenstein (and without Universal's humongo budgets!). Happy Birthday to Writer/Director George Romero (NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, THE CRAZIES, SEASON OF THE WITCH, MARTIN, DAWN OF THE DEAD, CREEPSHOW, DAY OF THE DEAD, MONKEY SHINES, THE DARK HALF, BRUISER, LAND OF THE DEAD, DIARY OF THE DEAD) who is 68. And On Sunday - The evil little bastard of Horror movies himself, Actor Warwick Davis (LEPRECHAUN [all], HARRY POTTER [all], SKINNED DEEP) is 38. She hasn't made a movie since 1976, but she left quite the Horror Thriller career behind her all the same. Actor Pamela Franklin (THE INNOCENTS, OUR MOTHER'S HOUSE, AND SOON THE DARKNESS, THE WITCHING, THE LEGEND OF HELL HOUSE, SATAN'S SCHOOL FOR GIRLS, SCREAMER, WON'T WRITE HOME MOM I'M DEAD, THE FOOD OF THE GODS) is 58.
FEB. 1 BLADE, BLADE II, BLADE III actor Wesley Snipes was found not guilty, today, of Federal Tax Fraud and Conspiracy. Amazingly enough and despite the fact that Wesley repeatedly made baseless accusations that the town of Ocala, Florida was racist, Snipes was found not guilty by a jury with not one African-American in the box. Huh! Can you imagine that? Wesley sure as hell couldn't. Indicted in 2006, Wesley Snipes has often taken the low-road. He blames racism for the reason his movie, BLADE: TRINITY, flopped. It seems that Wesley had nothing good to say about white folks, except of course, for the white-skinned idiot who got him into all of this trouble in the first place, Eddie Ray Kahn. Now Wesley may know something I don't about the folks over at Dimension Films. He knows them better than me beause I don't know them at all. I can't argue with that. But I'd like him to make it clear when he makes these large brush-stroke statements, just who he is blaming for the failure of BLADE: TRINITY? Is it just New Line & crew? Or is he blaming all of us non-blacks or specific whites? Still, we've all witnessed now that when the pressure is on, Snipes flips out the race card. I've no doubt that, to get back in his audiences good graces, he'll explain that he was under a lot of pressure. Ri-ight. We'll see if that works in time for his upcoming 2008 Horror Thriller release, GALLOWWALKER. January 2008 got the highest visitor count ever for the month with over 115,500 visitors (8,000+ more individuals that January 2007. 30,000+ more people than January 2006!). And this count isn't artifically inflated with an online community, chatrooms or anything else. Feo Amante's Horror Thriller is 100% content driven. So when people come here, they aren't by-passing the content to run off to a message board and maintain a flamewar or start an online romance. 115,500+ visitors for 100% content. And as always, I thank y'all for it! I have a question though: while I have no intention of having free standing message boards for feoamante.com, what do you think of having message boards directly associated with our reviews? I've resisted this so far as when I go to message boards elsewhere (I have no problem with them, they're just not what this site is about), the conversations start off relatively interesting but de-evolve into infantile flame wars after around 10 or so messages. So while feoamante.com won't have free-standing message boards (and there are some good message board driven websites out there. Check out HorrorWorld.org), or an online community (though I do belong to MySpace.com) what do you think of content attached message boards? I've given you the con, but the pro to this is, it could give the creators (in the case of writers for example) the opportunity to see how others react to their books and the reviews we post here. What do you think? You know how to reach me. SPOOKS is a four-issue arc with a script co-authored by veteran writer Larry Hama (G.I. Joe, WOLVERINE), artwork by Adam Archer and Jonny Rench (FRIDAY THE 13TH), and creative underpinnings developed by Hama and famed fantasy author R.A. Salvatore (FORGOTTEN REALMS, DEMON WARS). The covers for issue #1 were done by Greg Staples and Adam Archer, with subsequent covers by Archer, Federico D'Alessandro, Bill Sienkiewicz (30 DAYS OF NIGHT), and even film legend Drew Struzan (Movie posters for: THE THING, RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA, HARRY POTTER AND THE SORCERER'S STONE, HELLBOY, PAN'S LABYRINTH). The series spotlights the Department of Supernatural Defense, a branch of the military that "recruits, arms, and deploys specially trained forces based within the nation's borders in support of national security…to keep the country free of supernatural enemies, whether their origins are domestic, international, or otherworldly." This first limited series reveals a plot by supernatural terrorist groups to enter the United States covertly and launch a nationwide assault. Schifrin, producer-director of the SciFi Channel event movie Abominable, developed the original concept while working with film producer Daniel Alter (Hitman). Together, they brought SPOOKS to Josh Blaylock, president of Devil's Due Publishing. "This is only the beginning for SPOOKS,” Schifrin revealed. “We'll be adding to the web site on a regular basis, while developing the second story arc. We'll also use the site to make special announcements as SPOOKS explodes into other media." The site was developed by Frog on Top Studios, a company doing internet and media development for the past twelve years, helping to shape and advance the world of online media. With clients from the Forbes prestigious “Fortune 500” list, they have become a very successful developer and have produced a wide variety of mediums including film, Web, television, kiosk, and gaming. Some of their more prestigious clients include General Motors, BF Goodrich, Autodesk, T-Mobile, Alaskan Airlines, Alpine Electronics and numerous Hollywood icons such as Vin Diesel and Sean Patrick Flanery. The first issue of SPOOKS hits comic book stores in February, 2008. Each of the four monthly issues will feature variant covers, and all four issues will be collected into a trade edition that will include exclusive bonus features, as well. BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: RYAN SCHIFRIN From Amber February 14th, 2008 isn't just for lovers this year with the DVD release date set for THE CARETAKER, a campy teen horror starring Jennifer Tilly and Judd Nelson, Jonathan Breck and a fantastic group of teenage up-and-comers. The picture follows a group of teenage boys and girls as they head to an abandoned house in a grapefruit orchard where they are stalked by a real life urban legend, known as "The Caretaker." Judd Nelson delivers a disarmingly creepy performance as an overprotective father and the teenagers' outlandish teacher, played by Ms. Tilly, is obsessed with getting famous by sleeping with a student.
