QUICK BITE
Writer and Director Neil Marshall (DOG SOLDIERS, DESCENT) reports at his MySpace blog that the MPAA has officially rated his uupcoming movie, DOOMSDAY, an "R" for "strong bloody violence, language and some sexual content/nudity". Neill is quite happy about the rating.

Holmes
From Omaha Perez
CHECK THIS OUT, HOLMES!

I’m very pleased to announce that graphic novel publisher Ait/Planet Lar will be releasing a collected edition of my HOLMES series in March of this year. I’ve retouched dozens of pages and redrawn pieces I wasn’t satisfied with making this the definitive HOLMES edition.

HOLMES is featured in this months Previews catalog as a Spotlight item, a Staff Pick and an ad next to the Ait/Planet Lar listings. Thank you Larry and Mimi for getting HOLMES such great coverage! Here is the listing copy:

Omaha Perez' vicious skewering of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's classic literary creations is finally collected! This version of the Sherlock Holmes mythos expands on Dr. Watson's revelation that Holmes was a narcotics addict. The World's Greatest Detective is a maniac completely out of his head on drugs at all times and DR. Watson, his own personal 'Dr. Feelgood,' isn't much better off! Appearance meets reality as the duo must cope with their handicaps while recovering composer Joseph Haydn's missing skull.

HAPPY HORROR THRILLER BIRTHDAY TO -
He's been a force behind some of my favorite movies of all time. Happy Birthday to
Writer/ Director/ Producer Walter Hill (THE MACKINTOSH MAN, THE DROWNING POOL, THE DRIVER, ALIEN [all], TALES FROM THE CRYPT [TV], DEMON KNIGHT, BORDELLO OF BLOOD, SUPERNOVA, RITUAL, ALIEN VS. PREDATOR [all] and more) is 65.

BLU-RAY PULLS AHEAD
One of the biggest fish in the pond, Warner Bros. will stop backing both HD-DVD and BLU-RAY and carry only standard DVD and BLU-RAY disks from now on. The holiday sales of machines pointed out the consumer confusion that people had over the two formats - neither sold very well. Warner, like Disney, 20th Century Fox, Columbia, Sony Pictures, and a few others, is going over to the BLU-RAY format exclusively as the format holds nearly twice the amount of information, and can attain higher levels of high definition, than HD - which is apparently locked to a ceiling of 1080X720. BLU-RAY is capable of up to 1980i.

HAPPY HORROR THRILLER BIRTHDAY TO -
Actor Angela Bettis (BLESS THE CHILD, MAY, CARRIE [2002], TOOLBOX MURDERS, THE CIRCLE, Masters of Horror: SICK GIRL, THE WOODS, SCAR) is 35. Look for Angela's expected 2008 release of WICKED LAKE.

ONE MISSED CALL: HORROR GETS A FACELIFT
By J. Paul Peszko
Horror fans will be glad to see that Warner Bros. is opening the New Year (on Jan. 4) with ONE MISSED CALL, an all-new version of the Japanese hit, CHAKUSHIN ARI. I hesitate to use the term remake because, according to vfx supervisors Randy Goux and Patty Gannon of Zoic, Vancouver, the filmmakers barely watched the original*.

*FeoNote: Well gosh! Won't THAT just guarantee a freaking hit! Hey, for the future, why not carry on with that logic? We can make movies without ever looking at the script!

Doomsday
DEATH BEFORE TAXES
Neil Marshall's DOOMSDAY Movie Arrives in March
by Alex Billington
Neil Marshall, director of 2006's horror hit THE DESCENT, recently finished Doomsday, a futuristic sci-fi action movie in the vein of Mad Max that he wrote and directed. You may be asking, what exactly is Doomsday? Even I don't know the answer, because besides the footage I saw at Comic-Con (
which is now a blur in my memory), there are still no trailers or anything else released. Rogue Pictures has just set a March 14th release date and with that, we'll do our best to introduce you to the world of Doomsday and until a trailer arrives, explain some of what you might expect.

I'M JUST A PSYCHIC. HOW COULD I KNOW I'D GET SUED FOR FRAUD?
SO MUCH FOR - HA! - PSYCHICS
2008 will be the tenth year that magician James Randi started the James Randi Educational Foundation One Million Dollar Paranormal Prize. During that time not one celebrity so-called psychic has stepped forward to even attempt to claim the prize. The most laughable of the sleazebags, Silvia Browne, has gone on TV threatening to do it, and even promised to do it, but has disappeared from both television and the Montel Williams show whenever the topic threatened to come up (amazingly enough, she gets sick on those occasions where her predictions have gone wrong, which is nearly always).

Uri Geller has refused to take the test. Then threatened that he would take it, then dismissed James Randi as nothing more than a "magician", then rode the shoe strings of a popular magician in the hopes of re-igniting his flaccid career. Other charlatans and frauds such as the Biggest Douche in the Universe, John Edwards (Crossing Over), James Van Praagh, Peter Popoff, and other assorted human effluvia who talk a good game but refuse any and all challgnees to "their word" .

Of course, on their websites they often make fraudluent statements smacking of slander as they claim the contest is fixed. Nothing could be further from the truth and if any of their "believers" were actually interested in the truth, they'd go to the website to see for themselves. The Truth is Here.

But James Randi is going to give the staggeringly stupid two more years to get their collective shit together and produce even one person, on the entire planet, who can prove anything - anything at all in the paranormal. That's right. In 2010 James will be closing the contest, having aptly proved his point: that all people from Horoscope shams to 9-11 "Truthers" to UFO conspiracy theorists, to those dimwits who "speak to the dead", dowsers, health-magnet users, crystal rubbers, White Noisers, spoon benders, and so forth, are up to their eyes in their own shit.

So if you believe and try to con other people with your hocus-pocus bullshit, then you've got two more years to show the world. After that, you can say how you WOULD do the contest, but that you can't because it doesn't exist anymore. Of course, we'll smirk at you and think to ourselves, "Whatta freaking loser."

TOMORROW'S DVDS TODAY!
This is what's coming out tomorrow, Tuesday, January 8, on DVD. As you can see, not a whole hell of a lot, but better than last week or the week before.

Television - Nada. Not a damn thing

HIGH DEFINITION:
BLU-RAY -
ENEMY OF THE STATE, NIGHT OF THE WEREWOLF / VENGEANCE OF THE ZOMBIES, SUNSHINE,
HD DVD -
WHITE NOISE, WHITE NOISE 2, ZODIAC (TWO DISC DIRECTOR'S CUT)

And these are the movies coming out on DVD

THE ADDICTION - Makes the statement that, if the rush is high enough, you could get addicted to anything... with horrifying consequences.

BOOGEYMAN 2 - Well, he doesn't really dance, no, but what do you want from a Ulli Lommel remake? Stars Tobin Bell (SAW [all]).

DAYS OF DARKNESS - Guess what? Zombies have risen! Guess what else? They've gone totally cannibal! Guess what else? If one bites you, you will turn into a zombie! Guess what else, else, else? Director Jake Kennedy made this as a tribute to George Romero - like the guy needed another one.

DEATH SENTENCE - SAW co-creator, James Wan, grabs Brian Garfield's novel, DEATH WISH, renames it and runs with it. This is not a remake of the movie, but a remake of the novel. Stars Kevin Bacon (TREMORS, A STIR OF ECHOES, HOLLOWMAN).

THE DR. JECKYLL AND MR. HYDE ROCK AND ROLL MUSICAL - This just might be better than you'd think. Review coming right up!

DRAGON WARS: D-WAR - Please read the review.

ENEMY OF THE STATE (SPECIAL EDITION) - Pretty good paranoia movie. I should review it. Why haven't I? I was .. ah... waiting for this special edition! Yeah, that's the ticket! Stars Will Smith (MEN IN BLACK, I, ROBOT, I AM LEGEND) and John Voight (ANACONDA, LARA CROFT: TOMB RAIDER, THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE [2004], TRANSFORMERS).

THE EXPEDITION - Based on true events it says. Well okay, if you say so.

FRANKENHOOKER - Infamous writer and director Frank Henenlotter (BASKET CASE, BRAIN DAMAGE) has a lot to tell indie film makers. Namely that the budget of your movie, a bad script, and even bad acting in no way affects the power of your movie. When FRANKENHOOKER can't be funny, it's madcap. When it can't be either its energetic. One thing it never is, is boring. I'm snatching this one for review!

JOSHUA - This twisted dark comedy Horror Thriller never found an audience in the theaters. Then again, that can be said for many a great classic Horror Thriller movie.

THE KILLING FLOOR - Somebody is not only spying on Horror novel agent, David Lamont, they're letting him know he's being watched. A cat and mouse Mystery Suspense Thriller from first timer Gideon Raff.

MAMMOTH - Primitive Republicans run amok and stomp giant jackasses everywhere! Or something like that. Stars Tom Skerritt (THE DEVILS RAIN, ALIEN)

MANEATER - A Bengal Tiger is escaped and out of its element in the Appalachian Mountains. An adult Bengal Tiger from nose to tail is about 12 feet long and eats its weight in meat every two days - and it weighs 600 pounds! It's up to Sheriff Grady to save us and he's played by Gary Bussey, so we're pretty much screwed.

SCARRED - Is it possible to tell a truly original kidnap and torture story? Of course, but you have to be a truly original and creative person. Writer and Director Steve Looker just might be it. I'm not making any promises though.

SLAUGHTERED - At least 50 times year in the U.S. alone some inbred halfwit and his illiterate brother convince themselves that they are being terribly original and edgy by making yet another two-bit torture flick. Yet this one was actually directed by Anthony Doublin of all people, co-creator of award winning make-up effects for such movies as FROM BEYOND, BRIDE OF RE-ANIMATOR, and THE BLOB (1988). Could this movie actually be good?

SUNSHINE - Say! Did you see this SciFi Thriller when it hit the theaters? Funny. Neither did anyone else. Then again, it was in very limited release. If there is one thing good to say about it, it's that it was directed and produced by Danny Boyle, who created one of my all time favorite movies, 28 DAYS LATER. Stars Cliff Curtis (DEEP RISING, VIRUS, BRINGING OUT THE DEAD), Cillian Murphy (28 DAYS LATER, BATMAN BEGINS, RED EYE), and Michelle Yeoh (THE HEROIC TRIO, THE HEROIC TRIO 2).

THE VEIL - A small town is infected by a deadly virus not unlike RABID or 28 DAYS LATER, except that the infected attack only the uninfected (how the hell do they know when they're so damn rabid?). Naturally the government tries to cover it up. See HORROR THRILLER Scenario 1b.

VISIONS OF SUFFERING - Creatures of nightmare threaten to break into the real world. Could be good.

WHITE NOISE 2 - Nearly as good as the original WHITE NOISE. Is that saying something? Read my review then tell me. Stars Nathan Fillion (DRACULA 2000, SERENITY, SLITHER)

WITCHCRAFT 13 - I don't know if this is relevant, but all 13 of these WITCHCRAFT movies combined have made less money than the poorest performing FRIDAY THE 13th sequel. I'm just saying.

ZODIAC - Based upon the unsolved murders of the eponymous serial killer, this movie didn't have as much zing as it needed. Or perhaps, TV shows like CSI, Cold Case, and Dexter have far more zing than movies can hope to compete against. Stars Jake Gyllenhaal (DONNIE DARKO).

SWEENEY TODD: There Will Be VFX
By Tara DiLullo Bennett
See how Sweeney Todd makes a bloody good time out of a stylized shadowy London.

If ever there were a musical tailor-made for the twisted, Goth-inclined tastes of director Tim Burton, then surely it would be Stephen Sondheim's equally dark and twisted musical, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.

Cloverfield
SCARE FILMS USE 'BLAIR WITCH PLAYBOOK
For 'Cloverfield' and 'Paranormal' less is more
By Anne Thompson
'Cloverfield' features no-name actors and was shot with small digital cameras.

One is a big-budget monster-movie crammed with visual effects. The other is a microbudget haunted house film that has been making the fest rounds. But both "Cloverfield" and "Paranormal Activity" borrow admiringly from the "Blair Witch" playbook: Make your pic as real as possible by casting unknowns who can improvise. Eschew the gore, and scare auds with a homevideo documentary style. And build suspense by not showing everything.

IT'S F. PAUL Y'ALL!

THE LATEST FICTION:

BLOODLINE - The trade edition of the 11th Repairman Jack novel was released in September and is still around. The Queens of repairmanjack.com have arranged one-stop shopping: RepairmanJack.com.

HARBINGERS
The paperback of the 10th Repairman Jack novel was also released in September.

BLACK WIND
A strikingly beautiful edition of my "lost" novel, long out of print. After finishing THE TOUCH in 1985, the next story in line returned to WW2, but this time to the Pacific Theater. I'd been reading a few books that recounted how nicely the Pearl Harbor attack played into Roosevelt's desire to go to war against the Axis, hinting that Pearl had been set up. The result was a revisionist historical family saga horror war novel (try saying that fast 3 times) that took me almost two years to write and research. A mix of cultural fanaticism and wrenchingly dark supernatural horror. I'm very proud of BLACK WIND. Looking at it in terms of character development and sweeping plot, it's probably my most accomplished work. I'm delighted it's back in print. The price tag is high, but it's high-quality bookcraft.

VIRGIN - The limited edition hardcover is almost sold out, but the good folks at Borderlands Press have decided to make the novel available to the non-collector at a fraction of the hardcover price. It's now a large-format paperback.

THE TERY - (TRADE PAPERBACK NOW AVAILABLE)
This novel had its start in 1971 as a novelette called "He Shall Be Jon." I expanded it to novella length for 1978 publication as "The Tery" in BINARY STARS #2. Unfortunately the accompanying Steve Fabian illustrations were muddy messes due to the printing process. I fleshed it out to novel length for the 1990 Baen version. Last year I did extensive revisions. So here you have the definitive text in hardcover for the first time, with bright, crisp reproductions Fabian's original art, plus new art by Steve Fabian and Courtney Skinner.
You can also order in hardcover, or the super-special silver edition.

12/4/2007 - I learned today that the CONSPIRACIES paperback sold out its stock of the old design. The good news is it now goes back for redesign along the lines of the other titles; the bad news is it won’t be available for 6 months.

Dark Dreamers

From Josh Davidson
DARK DREAMERS™

Five-Disc Set Featuring Interviews By Three Time Bram Stoker Award-Winning Author, Stanley Wiater; Available April 1st

"Stanley Wiater is a very talented journalist" —Stephen King

Scarborough, ME – They've created the dreams that mark our nightmares, forging an unforgettable world of dark fantasy, horror and suspense. After 30 years of accruing in-depth interviews, award-winning author Stanley Wiater has created the ultimate video library of horror icons as Elite Entertainment presents "Dark Dreamers™—Volume One." This five-DVD set, featuring interviews with over 30 writers, directors, producers, actors and SFX artists—including I AM LEGEND author Richard Matheson—will be available on April 1st. The series will continue with future volumes beginning in the second half of '08.

"Without a doubt, 'Dark Dreamers™' represents the most comprehensive DVD catalog of interviews with some of the greatest talents the horror world has ever known," said Vini Bancalari, President, Elite Entertainment. "Only a dark dreamer himself could have put together such an iconic compilation, and Stanley Wiater is such a person, placing himself within the masters of horror inner circle. There's no question that any true horror fan will need to have this volume in their collection."

From Richard Matheson to Stan Winston; Forest J Ackerman to Clive Barker; Jack Ketchum to Wes Craven; Peter Straub to Larry Cohen… the artistic world of horror would not exist without these dark dreamers. Why did they enter this dimension? How did they make their mark? What is it about their craft that drives their passion? Respected journalist and horror aficionado Stanley Wiater spent three decades interviewing his renowned subjects, and their stories will entertain, enlighten, and perhaps even scare the dark dreamer in us all.

See sample clips of the DARK DREAMERS DVD set.

Stanley Wiater has been acclaimed as "the world's leading authority on horror filmmakers and authors" (Radio/TV Interview Report), "the master journalist of the dark genres" (World of Fandom), and "the top horror journalist in North America for the past 25 years" (Rue Morgue). His 14 award-winning books - and more than 700 interviews, articles, short stories, profiles, comic book scripts, reviews, and essays - have been translated into 10 languages.

FeoNote: I had the personal opportunity to see what Stanley Wiater was up to with his series of DARK DREAMERS interviews back in 2001 and I was absolutely floored. Stanley is not the kind of guy to go up to these true Masters of Horror and ask some superficial "E!" question. Stanley asks the kind of questions we Horror Thriller fans would ask if we only had the jaw-dropping opportunity that Stanley grabbed. DARK DREAMERS has been an extraordinary lifetime achievement and labor of love for Stanley.

Unfortunately, some of the artists who participated with Stanley over the years are no longer with us, making DARK DREAMERS such a rich documentary and archive that it will be generations before anyone will come close to repeating it.

DARK DREAMERS is, in fact, so much more than a documentary. It is a legacy; a heritage. This is what we've all wanted and waited for. Every fan, every writer, every film maker, every musician, every artist, anyone who loves Horror Thriller in all of its many forms will find nothing penultimate in DARK DREAMERS. It's rare that someone can say this without hyperboly, but there is no question that DARK DREAMERS is the proverbial IT!

END OF 2007 UPDATE
Feo Amante's Horror Thriller began life under the title, Feo Amante's Horror Home Page. Which became Feo Amante's Horror Home, which became today's Feo Amante's Horror Thriller.

Feo Amante's Horror Home Page started life at geocities.com but a fast rising number of visitors convinced me, E.C.McMullen Jr. (aka Eddie) to give it it's own domain identity. This was done in 1999 and feoamante.com was officially launched in August of that year.

Since 1999, the visitor count for feoamante.com has grown by leaps and bounds. Especially important considering that it has received virtually no paid advertising since 1999. In its nearly 10 years of operation, feoamante.com has never had a down year. In fact, feoamante.com doubles its visitor counts about every two years. For example, 2006 had more than twice the number of visitors as 2004 and 2007 had more than twice the number of visitors as 2008. Over 1.3 million people visited feoamante.com in 2007! Since those people are you, and like to thank yall for visiting and also for your emails and well wishes. It's truly appreciated.
