Of Angels Fallen

They rescued him from the streets and with their help he has become the world's greatest assassin. So much death, so much blood, but it all ends after this one final job. Just one more death and Mal will finally get what was promised him so many, many years ago.

Jonas White is a powerful man, an empire builder. He commands adoration and respect from everyone who meets him. He is a good man, does good things. But now he's also a marked man. He knows destiny is banging on the door. What will happen when he opens it?

Two men fated to meet each other on one cataclysmic evening. An evening when secrets will be revealed, loyalties will be tested, old grudges settled and new ones made. This is just one stop along a long road. A road that leads back to where it ALL began so very long ago.

TALES OF THE FALLEN has a forward by Barnett's buddy, Edward Lee (Book: THE TERATOLOGIST [w/Wrath James White], Movie: HEADER) and Illustrations by Travis Anthony Soumis.

Like A Chinese Tattoo
From John Everson
TATTOO YOU

Dark Arts Books' 4th title, LIKE A CHINESE TATTOO, featuring stories from Cullen Bunn, Rick Reed, David Thomas Lord and J.A. Konrath is now available for pre-order. The collection will be debuting at the end of the month at the World Horror Convention 2008 in Salt Lake City.

For fans of JA Konrath's Jack Daniels mystery series, this collection includes a Harry McGlade novella, "The Necro Files." (McGlade also appears in the just-announced SUCKERS novelette from Delirium Books, co-written with Jeff Strand).

Last week, we signed off on printer proofs for LIKE A CHINESE TATTOO, and it looks great! There are really some twisted stories in this collection: In addition to the hysterical "Necro Files," the book offers Rick R. Reed's dark revenge tale "Moving Toward the Light," David Thomas Lord's deceptively creepy "The White Room" and Cullen Bunn's darkly horrifying "Tomorrow, When The Demons Come" (as well as one of Cullen's insanely twisted WHC Gross-Out stories!) And those are just a few of the 12 offerings.

HAPPY HORROR THRILLER BIRTHDAY TO -
Today's Birthday boy had an early role with Jack Nicholson (THE SHINING, WOLF), Scatman Crothers (THE SHINING, DEADLY EYES), and Michael Berryman (DEADLY BLESSING, THE DEVIL'S REJECTS). Not a bad ensemble for a movie that was almost, but not quite Horror. The film I'm talking about, of course, is One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, and the person I'm talking about is
Actor Brad Douriff (EYES OF LAURA MARS, BLUE VELVET, CHILD'S PLAY [all], THE EXORCIST III, HIDDEN AGENDA, GRAVEYARD SHIFT, DEATH MACHINE, ALIEN: Resurrection, URBAN LEGEND, THE LORD OF THE RINGS: The Two Towers, and a lot more) who is 58.
Actor Sophia Myles (GUEST HOUSE PARADISO, FROM HELL, UNDERWORLD, OUT OF BOUNDS, UNDERWORLD: EVOLUTION, MOONLIGHT [TV]) is 28.

Crucifixion
From RS Connett
CRUCIFIXION

RS Connett's most recent painting is entitled "CRUCIFIXION 001". Connett's last six paintings were done in blacks with small amounts of color. With this piece, he has returned to color. This is The second painting in a series he calls 'EPITAPH'. (The first painting in the series of the same name can be seen here) Connett has been commissioned to do at least two paintings in this new series, and plans on no less than four. "It is a series of paintings that reflects my visions of what mankind has done with the Earth in 10,000 years, and where I see us headed. I don't think we can do much as individuals to alter the path that our ancestors have put us on. However, these images, meant to inspire thought about our predicament, will be my small contribution."

To see this painting, and many more by RS Connett, visit his website, THE VOMITUS MAXIMUS MUSEUM.

Paul Kratka
From Scott Goldberg
LOSS OF HOPE

Paul Kratka plays a man who has lost all hope. After a nuclear war that has killed millions, he must look to memories of the past to heal his fears.

"Loss of Hope" was written by Jennifer Baltusis, Paul Kratka and Scott Goldberg. Filmmaker Scott Goldberg talks about the collaboration: "It started off as just being an idea for a scene with Paul talking about his memories of the past and how much he missed his wife ... It eventually evolved into a much more deeper story with deeper meaning. Everyone brought something different to the story."

Kratka plays a man who witnesses a nuclear attack on the United States and hides out with his daughter in an abandoned basement while the world around him comes to an end. Also featured in the film is actress Gail Merzer Behrens. The film is scheduled to be realased in Fall 2008.

The Pines
From Robert Dunbar
A VIEW OF THE SHORE

Here, rancid air hangs heavily in a void, its texture thick, liquid, clinging, in a night full of the hot smells of decay. This humid oppression strangely amplifies dripping, clicking noises: the moldy rasp of dead leaves stirred by tiny animals, the constant murmur of a brook threading the loamy ground, the oozing splash of something that moves heavily through water …
~ from the opening of THE PINES by Robert Dunbar

Nearly twenty years ago, Leisure Books published a horror novel that created a sensation. Hailed as a masterpiece (though heavily expurgated), Robert Dunbar’s THE PINES developed a fiercely partisan following within the genre, and during the years in which it remained out of print, its reputation amounted nearly to cult status. Last year, Delirium Books published a restored version of the novel in a limited hardbound edition, followed by a matching edition of the never-before-published sequel.

In the fall of 2008, Leisure Books will again release THE PINES. This will be the uncut version, never before published in paperback. At the same time, Delirium Books will release MARTYRS & MONSTERS, a collection of Dunbar’s short fiction, with an introduction by Greg F. Gifune. ("Dark fiction as it should be – chilling, entertaining, intelligent.") The collection will be published both as a limited edition hard back and as a mass market paperback. The following spring, Leisure will release THE SHORE in its first paperback edition.

High beams scythe the night. It has been almost an hour since she glimpsed house lights or even another car, and isolation makes the night seem chillier. Yet she cracks the window to let freezing air whistle in. Above the windshield, skeletal trees vault, endlessly frigid and unsullied. The road twines through the pressing tangle, widening again, as woods fall away. Then the road humps downward, and suddenly the sea spreads before her ...
~ from the opening of THE SHORE by Robert Dunbar

Silent Hill
HAPPY HORROR THRILLER BIRTHDAYS TO -
Thanks to THE X-FILES, gory "forensic" thrillers are huge on television prime time.
"What killed this victim?"
"I dunno, let's pull out his guts and dissect his brain Like This!"
Stepping into this new paradigm, and making a career of it, is today's birthday boy,
Actor David Anders (ALIAS [TV], THE SOURCE, CSI: CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATION, CHARMED, LEFT IN DARKNESS) who is 27.
Writer/Director Christophe Gans (NECRONOMICON, CRYING FREEMAN, LE PACT DES LOUPS, SILENT HILL) is 48.
Though SILENT HILL tanked at the world wide box office, Christophe is scheduled to direct SILENT HILL 2, which has an expected 2008 release date. Wish him well!

Also, according to The History Channel.com, today in 1818, what is considered to be the story that birthed both Horror and Science Fiction was published. Mary Shelley's MODERN PROMETHEUS or FRANKENSTEIN was born into the world. Mary was only 21 at the time. Let's hear it for early achievers!
