MARCH 10

QUICK BITE
Director Edgar Wright (SHAUN OF THE DEAD) won a Best Comedy Empire Award for his movie HOT FUZZ.

What is an Empire Award you might ask? Very well you might ask this question and you'd be right in doing so. But why let me waste any more of your time when you can simply go to Edgar Wright's blog and have him tell you straight-away?

Yes, go do that now. Go to Edgar Wright's MySpace blog.

Devil Girl
DEVIL IN THE DETAILS
No sooner did the creators of the movie DEVIL GIRL, sign up with Elite Entertainment, than Empire Home Entertainment acquired the rights to the USA distribution libraries of both Elite and Focus Film libraries. Empire will start marketing and distribution of both libraries in April and predicts strong retailer support.

According to Market Wire via Reuters: New release titles that will debut on DVD under the Empire venture include the Horror Thriller DEVIL GIRL and Stanley Wiater's television series boxed set DARK DREAMERS. Other library items include best-selling genre multi-packs such as "Masterworks of German Cinema" 3-pack which includes NOSFERATU, THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI, and THE GOLEM that have become one of the top-selling DVD formats for mass merchants. Empire will pursue placement of most items with its key accounts, including Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Target and numerous other DVD retail chains and internet sellers.

So what's going on here? Was DEVIL GIRL the prize that sealed the deal? Was it Stanley Wiater's DARK DREAMERS? Was the duo too tempting to resist? Well now DEVIL GIRL is going into limited theatrical release on April 8, 2008.

There will be two midnight screenings Fri and Sat at Laemmle Sunset 5, West Hollywood. Devil Girl is a fast paced sexy thriller that revolves around a psychotic clown, a sexy temptress,& fast cars. Devil Girl is essentially Horns, Tail and Rock & Roll!

Synopsis:
Fay is a small town girl on a cross country road trip, trying to escape her own reality after the death of her father. Robbed at a gas station and broke down on route 66, she finds herself stranded in an isolated desert town. For a strange girl in a strange place, there are precious few choices for making enough money to repair her muscle car. Desperate to regain her car and freedom, Fay is soon sliding down a dark spiral while navigating through a host of locals: a creepy motel clerk, an overzealous preacher, and then there are the demons of the road: a neurotic, drug abusing clown, and the sexy temptress with horns and a tail that is the DEVIL GIRL.

DEVIL GIRL blisters across the screen with a punk metal soundtrack by, SCUM OF THE EARTH! Plus 400 BLOWS, THE UVs, and MIA X!

Catch some of the cars that appeared in the movie Devil Girl at Bob's Big Boy Friday night Car Show April 4th in Toluca lake. Stunt driver/Hot rod builder Clark Gillie's 67' Mercury Cougar, that appeared in DEVIL GIRL will be there. Also be sure to catch Clark and the crew from Bodie Stroud's custom hot rod shop B.S. Industries Inc. March 22nd as they build a 1956 Ford truck on Hot Rod T.V. (on the Speed Channel).

The Devil Girl DVD Release date is June 3rd, 2008. Released through Empire Film Group/Elite Entertainment.

Thanks to Tracey Wilcox and Market Wire.

THE ANCHOR BAY COLLECTION PROUDLY PRESENTS THE DARIO ARGENTO BOX SET

Five Argento masterpieces together in a collectible boxed set for the first time on May 27

BURBANK, CA – Dario Argento is one of the most acclaimed filmmakers in modern history, a director whose work has shocked, entertained and enthralled millions the world over. The world of Dario Argento is a surreal, mysterious and mesmerizing one. There is a unique magic and power that “The Maestro” brings to everything he touches.

Now, Anchor Bay Entertainment pays tribute to the acclaimed filmmaker with The Dario Argento Box Set, a five-film collection that will be released under the prestigious Anchor Bay Collection banner on May 27th.

Following the worldwide success of his hallucinatory horror hit Suspiria, Argento returned to the genre that he helped to pioneer and which launched his international career and earned him the title of “The Italian Hitchcock.” In these acclaimed “giallo” thrillers, Argento explores the extremes of murder, insanity and brutality with the startling plot twists, stunning visuals and shocking twists that have defined his work.

The five films in this collection have been remastered from original vault elements and are presented uncut and uncensored for an all-new look at one of the most controversial and influential filmmakers in the history of modern cinema.

The Dario Argento Box Set, is the quintessential assemblage of Argento’s brilliance and includes such masterpieces as:

Tenebre Special Edition (released in the U.S. as Unsane), starring Academy Award® nominee Anthony Franciosa (A Hatful of Rain, Across 110th Street) and Golden Globe® winner John Saxon (A Nightmare on Elm Street, Enter the Dragon). Tenebre features a brand new 16x9 transfer, plus an all-new retrospective featurette;

Phenomena Special Edition (released in the U.S. as Creepers), starring Academy Award® winner Jennifer Connelly (A Beautiful Mind, Blood Diamond) and the legendary Donald Pleasence (Halloween series, The Great Escape, Escape from New York). Remastered in 16x9 with an all-new retrospective featurette;

Trauma, starring Argento’s exquisite daughter Asia Argento (New Rose Hotel, XXX), three-time Academy Award®-nominee, Golden Globe® and Emmy Award® winner Piper Laurie (Children of a Lesser God, Carrie, “Twin Peaks”), Academy Award®- nominee Frederic Forrest (Apocalypse Now, The Rose, Tucker: The Man and His Dream) and Academy Award®-nominee Brad Dourif (Mississippi Burning, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, the voice of “Chucky” in the Child’s Play franchise);

The Card Player, starring Stefania Rocca (The Talented Mr. Ripley, Dracula’s Curse) and IFTA Award winner Liam Cunningham (Dog Soldiers, Breakfast on Pluto, “RKO 281”);

Do You Like Hitchcock?, Argento’s personal homage to his life-long idol, starring Elio Germano (Napoleon and Me, Respiro) and Chiara Conti (A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Marco Bellocchio’s award-winning The Religion Hour).

Each of these films boasts a variety of DVD special features, including audio commentaries, behind-the-scenes retrospectives, trailers and more.

In addition, Anchor Bay Entertainment will release the special editions of both Tenebre and Phenomena individually.

Argento was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2001 Amsterdam Fantasy Film Festival, the Maverick Tribute Award at the 2000 Cinequest San Jose Film Festival, a Special Award “FantaItaly” from the 1985 Fantafestival, the Time Machine Honorary Award from the Sitges – Catalonian Film Festival, and the 2007 Career Award from Flaiano International Prizes.

Argento’s career is going stronger than ever. He recently completed the long-anticipated Mother of Tears: The Third Mother, concluding the unforgettable trilogy begun in Suspiria and continued in Inferno, and he directed the segments Pelts and Jenifer for the award-winning Showtime series “Masters of Horror” (available from Anchor Bay Entertainment). Argento is currently directing the thriller Giallo, which will be released later this year. The film stars Ray Liotta, Asia Argento and Elsa Pataky.

In the tradition of previous Anchor Bay Collection releases like Re-Animator and Phantasm, The Dario Argento Box Set is a must-have item for the Argento aficionado and all horror devotees.

Noctem Aeternus
NOCTEM NO MORE
Michael Knost has called it quits after the very first issue of his online magazine, NOCTEM AETURNUS was released. Michael says:

"I have always considered Noctem Aeternus Magazine as a vehicle to expand the horror genre, and to add a good paying market for its writers.

My idea was to create a quality PDF delivered quarterly. The plan was to make the subscription free so we could build a huge circulation, where we could use those numbers in a national sells effort. The goal was to have 30,000 subscribers before the first issue hit mailboxes . . . unfortunately we only reached 6,000 subscribers.

I paid over $2,000 out of my own pocket to pay the writers for the first issue because we did not have sufficient advertising. The money is not the issue . . . however, the fact that I misjudged the number of folks signing up for a free product is.

My life is changing, and I simply cannot continue with the business model I set out with. As many of you know, my wife and I are expecting our first child in August. We have been married for 15 years and this something that has already changed everything. We are also in the process of purchasing a bigger house so when the little one grows into the bigger one, we'll have the room and I won't have to give up my den or office.

So, with all that said, I am announcing that Noctem Aeternus is no more. The first issue was its last, unfortunately."

The fact that it took Michael and his wife 15 freaking years to have their first child gives me hope for my wife and I. Michael went on to say that he won't be leaving the Horror genre entirely, but priorities dictate his shifting gears. I wish him the best.

Rex Mundi 10
From Arvid Nelson
MUNDI ON MONDAY

I cannot believe Rex Mundi has come this far. These issues were just gossamer fantasies when I first outlined Rex Mundi in 1999. I couldn't be happier to have Juan doing the art; right now he's drawing Issue 12 and it's going to be the best yet. I always say that, but it's always true!

And it's terrific having Scott Allie as an editor. Right now I'm writing the final six issues, and I have to admit I'm scared out of my mind. Will they live up to the image I've had burning inside me for so long? With Juan and Scott to help, I feel a lot more confident the ending is going to be absolutely epic.

Oh, and check out Juan's front cover for Issue 10, Dear Reader. It's one of his best, done in the style of Drew Struzan, the great Hollywood one-sheet artist. Sales of Rex Mundi trade paperbacks spiked dramatically on amazon.com the week #10 came out, and I have no doubt it's due to Juan's glorious cover. It's the best likeness of Julien yet!

Suspiria
REMAKE MADNESS
I know that nearly all of you who come here on a regular basis do so for the news on Horror Thriller, Mystery, and Suspense in all of its forms, and not just movies. And judging from emails, I know a number of you ignore pretty much anything that smacks of pure movie fandom unless those sites stay on point and talk only of your favorite genres. But that said, check out the news on these upcoming Horror movie remakes that yer gonna want to know about.

David Gordon Green Confirms ‘Suspiria’ Remake
Published by Shawn Adler on Wednesday, March 5, 2008 at 7:08 pm.
It’s an indisputable horror classic, and one of the scariest gosh darn movies you’ll ever see. So, naturally, when the decision came to remake Dario Argento’s iconic SUSPIRIA, they went to the guy best known for Southern coming-of-age stories?

Last House on the Left Gets New Occupants
March 5, 2008
by Kevin Powers
Back in 1972, Wes Craven wrote and directed a particularly gruesome horror film called The Last House on the Left, which became notorious for two distinct reasons:
1) it pretty much started Craven's perennial career in horror, and
2) it encountered a variety of difficulties with censorship, including being banned by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) in 1974 for the violence it contained.

From Harry Shannon
DEMON - I MEAN, DAEMON

Director Yossi Sasson and Delirium Books have uploaded a terrific book trailer for Harry Shannon's novel DAEMON. In the book, which hits retailers in a few weeks, Black Ops specialist Jeff Lehane burned out fast and retired young. He still has nightmares about a bloody mission into Iraq, right on the eve of the war.

Lehane reluctantly agrees to assist his ex-wife, who is guarding a Latino rap star. She is killed during the concert, and Jeff soon discovers that someone—or something—has broken into the morgue to eat from her corpse. Outraged, Lehane assembles his former team and they begin to hunt down the ghoul that is stalking Las Vegas.

THE CLINTONS, A HORROR FILM THAT NEVER ENDS
If politics makes for strange bedfellows then campaigning makes for strange epiphanies. In the United States, Republican commentators are shaking their heads in disbelief at Democrats and their wholly new perspective on the Clintons. What Democrat commentators are saying about the Clintons now - and even admitting that the issue has bothered them for years - Republicans have been saying for decades. In fact, this enlightened regard of the Clintons, from Democrats, has been their reputation since the days when Bill was a governor in Arkansas and known as "Slick Willie". You want the world to love us again? This is what they're saying in the UK Times Online:

The Clintons, a horror film that never ends.
Sands of Oblivion
TOMORROW'S DVDS TODAY!
These are the movies and shows coming out tomorrow, Tuesday, March 4, 2008, on DVD.

Television -
FIVE DAYS - An HBO Mini series involving the disappearance of a loved one and her family's desperate investigation over the course of five days to find her. 2 discs.

HIGH DEFINITION -
BLU-RAY -
DOGMA, GATTACA, HIT MAN, I, ROBOT, NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN

These are the movies -

13 GAME OF DEATH - From Dimension Films Extreme library!

ASPIRING PSYCHOPATH - Lucinda wants to learn how to be a serial killer. So every day she watches how other serial killers do it: How they capture, torture, and kill their victims (Hey, what city is this where serial killing is so out in the open?). Will Lucinda be ready for the big time on her self-appointed graduation day? And will her series get picked up for syndication?

BATS: THE HUMAN HARVEST - Hey, if you saw the original BATS, then this sequel might actually be better than the original! It's not like they'd have to try too hard.

GATTACA - A nearly flawless Science Fiction Thriller (the flaw is with one obvious glare in the science). If you haven't seen this movie, you truly don't know what you're missing. And once you have seen it, then you'll know what you missed!

HITMAN - This movie got quite the following in theaters from those who did go to see it. Everyone I've met loves it. But because it was a video game to movie flick, so many genre fans who may have enjoyed it stayed away in droves. This is one you may want to rent.

NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN - What started out as a crime drama from Cormac McCarthy became a Horror Thriller with the acting of Javier Bardem and the writing and direction of the Coen Brothers.

OUTPOST - In war-torn eastern Europe, a mess o' mercenaries take on a mission to find some secret stuff. Too bad this secret stuff is a terrifying secret that has been buried for 5 decades. Me, if I was a mercenary commander, I think the first thing I'd ask about a secret mission would be, "Uh, yeah. This wouldn't be a terrifying secret mission now would it?" Then again, if a mysterious businessman wants to hire you to go on a secret mission into a war-torn No-Man's Land, you probably answered yer own question.

SANDS OF OBLIVION - Please read my review.

SHOWDOWN AT AREA 51 - Them dang ol outerspace aliens are at it again! Two alien races have crashed on the earth and both are looking for the Omega Seed (Not found in any store, but through this special TV offer...!). One alien wants to save the earth, the other wants to destroy mankind. Meanwhile, there's this honking huge obelisk about to make the whole battle moot! Can anyone or anything save us?

SISTERS - A psycho Thriller that is also a Horror movie and stars Stephen Rea (FEAR DOTCOM) and Chloe Sevigny. Get this: it was shot on 35 mm film and the budget was $60k! Cheaper than helf hour sitcoms! Produced by Edward R. Pressman (SISTERS [1973], PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE, THE CROW, THE ISLAND OF DR. MOREAU, AMERICAN PSYCHO) and Alessandro Camon (AMERICAN PSYCHO).

WRESTLEMANIAC - A well acted, average directed, HORRIBLY written slasher movie.

PUBLISH AMERICA EXPOSED
The current executive director of PublishAmerica is Miranda Prather. In 2004, Prather claimed that 80% of authors who submitted manuscripts to the house were rejected, and that the house had "30 full-time editors" with plans to expand.

In August 2005, PublishAmerica was sued by Encyclopædia Britannica for trademark violation over PublishAmerica's PublishBritannica imprint. The matter was settled out of court, with PublishAmerica agreeing to stop using the "PublishBritannica" name.

I Am Legend
I AM LEGEND'S ORIGINAL ENDING
by Alex Billington
Today I've got to break some rules. We normally never ever talk about anything related to DVD, but this time this is too amazing to pass up. And all in the same, I'm putting a theatrical spin on it, so let's just get to it. Last December when I AM LEGEND hit theaters, one of the biggest complains I heard was that the ending was completely changed from the book and in turn the entire "legend" concept that Richard Matheson originally wrote was never actually seen. The DVD is arriving in a few weeks and Francis Lawrence's original ending that was made is included on it. Thankfully we've grabbed the new version for your viewing pleasure below. And to say it simply - you NEED to watch this.

You've been warned - everything from this point forward contains spoilers. Proceed at your own risk!

Sands of Oblivion
From Ed Peters
ANUBIS: A GOD SPELLED DOG

BURBANK, CA – In 1923, legendary film director Cecil B. DeMille constructed a replica of ancient Egypt in the California desert for his epic movie The Ten Commandments. After filming was completed, he ordered the entire set buried. For the last 85 years, the unanswered question remains: Why? Solve the mystery of what lurks beneath the scorching wasteland when Anchor Bay Entertainment releases Sands of Oblivion on DVD March 11, 2008.

Directed by David Flores and written & produced by Kevin VanHook (VOODOO MOON), Sands of Oblivion stars Adam Baldwin (PREDATOR 2, SERENITY,THE THIRST), Morena Baccarin (SERENITY), Academy Award® winner George Kennedy (THE TERROR WITHIN) and Dan Castellaneta (The Simpsons TREEHOUSE OF HORROR) as Cecil B. DeMille. First broadcast on the SCI-FI Channel, Sands of Oblivion will be presented in a special “Director’s Cut” edition, featuring additional footage not seen in the original airing.

A modern day excavation crew lead by soon-to-be divorced archaeologist couple Jesse and Alice Carter (Baldwin and Baccarin) have uncovered the secret that DeMille tried in vain to bury: the set holds the spirit of a vengeful Egyptian god, trapped in a smuggled artifact amongst the movie props. Unleashing an ancient centuries-old horror, it will be up to Jesse and Alice, along with an Iraq War combat veteran (Victor Webster: WISHMASTER IV) to recapture the vile fury of ages past.

Fans will have fun unearthing the following value-added treasures on the DVD:
