Skull Cathedral
SKULL CATHEDRAL
I don't have a review copy. I haven't read this book. Nobody asked me to do anything about this book, but I have to say that Tim Waggoner's new book, SKULL CATHEDRAL (released through Squid Salad Press, July 2008), is my favorite book cover of the year so far. This thanks entirely to artist, Jeff Gaither's brilliant and bizarre cover art. A creepy cotten candy color on a stitched and sickened skull give this cover a raw energy reminiscent of early Robt. Williams or S. Clay Wilson. The background of teeth, gums, and what else, makes me think of used, pus soaked bandages under bright hospital light (it's really just the image on top of the image). Gaither's cover art just makes me want to open it up and see if Waggoner's tale within is really as good as the art without.

I'm not judging a book by its cover, but I am judging this cover by its art! Wow! Kick ass!

Terminator
TERMINATOR: McBLOG
You've all read my comments on the upcoming TERMINATOR: SALVATION movie as produced and directed by McG. Now the new TERMINATOR: SALVATION website is up.

The website is basically a blog for McG to tell everyone how he honestly and for true will not screw this movie up. He loves the Terminator universe. Honest! Reading his blog, its like the guy knows he's made some major mis-steps in the very recent past that has put him somewhere below Uwe Bolls in fan appreciation.

I could go on, but what's the point? Better that you read his blog yourself and make your own judgement.

TOMORROW'S DVDS TODAY!
These are the movies and shows coming out tomorrow, Tuesday, May 27, 2008, on DVD.

TV -
THE INVADERS - The complete first season

Box Sets and Collections -
The H.P. Lovecraft Collection gets a wide release. These indpendent films from around the world and in various languages all have one thing in comon and that's the tales of Lovecraft. Films featured this week in this collection are: COOL AIR (1998 - first release in 2004), DREAMS OF CTHULHU (2004), OUT OF MIND (2004), PICKMAN'S MODEL (originally released in 2000 in Chile as CHILEAN GOTHIC).

VISIONS OF HELL: THE FILMS OF JIM VANBEBBER - Two feature films and five short films on four DVDs.

DARIO ARGENTO BOX SET - Wanna whole lotta Argento? You get PHENOMENA, TENEBRE, CARD PLAYER, TRAUMA, and DO YOU LIKE HITCHCOCK.

These are the movies -

THE CHAIR - Give your movie a DVD cover reminscent of (nearly identical to) Tim Burton's SWEENEY TODD, and maybe enough people in a rush at their local video stores will pick it up and rent it by mistake. I'm guessing that was Lionsgate's marketing strategy for this one, and I don't know if they did Director Brett Sullivan any favors by taking this route.

DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE - 2006 through 2007 were the years for making super cheapie versions of Robert Louis Stevenson's classic tale. Who knows why everyone was doing it, but I hope they've stopped now. This one stars Tom Skerrit (ALIEN).

GRIZZLY PARK - A group of thoroughly unlikable young jerks get to go into the wods to pick up trash as part of their "Community Service" sentence. Meanwhile an even more unlikable murdering jerk has escaped prison. But even if he hadn't, thar's still bears in them thar woods!

MOST HIGH - Like TRAINSPOTTING and REQUIEM FOR A DREAM, this film watches the Horrors of addiction unfold in bleakly comic terms.

NORIKA'S DINNER TABLE - Teenage girl, Noriko Shimabara (Kazue Fukiishi), runs away from home for life in the big city only to hook up with a cult that funds itself with prostitution. Meanwhile suicides are the newset sensation that is sweeping the nation. It's up to Noriko's even younger sister to come and save the day. All done with the twisted Horror weirdness we've come to expect of Japanese cinema.

PHENOMENA - Anchor Bay does a re-package and re-release of Dario Argento's 1984 masterpiece starring Jennifer Connelly (THE HULK).

STORM - From 2005 comes this tale of a Red headed woman who has this really cool box. Not sure what it is, but slacker Donny would sure like to find out. TO do that he first has to protect it and the woman. Such a matter is complicated when they go wizzing through time and space meeting wire flyers and swordsman, not to mention gunslingers, who all want the box.

SUSPENSION - From 2008 also asks the question, what would you do if you could stop time?

TENEBRE - Another Anchor Bay re-package and re-release. This time of Dario Argento's 1982 masterpiece. Please read our review.

TREMORS - a re-release. Please read our review.

TREMORS 2: AFTER SHOCKS - a re-release. Please read our review.

TREMORS 3: RETURN TO PERFECTION - Gets a re-release. Who knows why? Read the review.

CAST YOUR VOTE

Hello out there in Spooksville! My name is Bill McLean and I want to be the next horror movie icon. I entered the massify.com contest "Ghosts in the Machine" and made it to the top 10 Men's division. I made it there by playing a character that I based on the PERKINS' 14 film storyline. Apparently I scared the crap out of a LOT of people with my audition. Please feel free to check it out at massify. Just click on "competitions" tab, then click on my creepy face!!!

You will see my screen test (which isn't scary at all) that was shot in LA, but further down the page you will see a 4-star rated audition titled "Paranoid Killer/Tough Cop". This is the piece of film that landed me in the top 10.

I come from a very small town in Maine, so statistically speaking I shouldn't have made the top 10 - everyone else involved is from a HUGE city. Luckily the massify hordes wanted someone scary in the film. I have a loving wife and 5 children to feed and care for - so your vote would be greatly appreciated.

I have no formal training. I learned what I know from life, and being in several other films. I learned the hard way most of the time - but at least I learned. If you watch webisode 2 on the competitions page you will see the other side of me, compassionate - AND passionate about acting and filmmaking.

Watch all of the top 10 men's park scene, then vote for the best. My audition is at Massify.com/auditions/730. If I ain't the best, then vote for Jason Crowe - because he friggin' ROCKS!!!! On the Ladies' side - you can't go wrong with Aubrey Mozino OR Anne Luna. You're allowed to vote for 1 man and 1 woman. Now go sign up and vote - or I'll track you down and......

To the great community of FeoAmante.com,

I am Shayla Beesley and I am running for Lead in the Massify and After Dark horror competition. To date, I am the most viewed profile on the site exceeding 1000 views and am ranked 3rd in the competition for my screentests. There's less than a week left and I have to make it to 1st place before the expiration date. I figured I would reach out to your community considering you are all things horror and thriller.

I remember my first "scary" movie... I was 2 and my uncle was watching BRAM STOKER'S DRACULA, which I just happend to walk in on, and it was that scene where Keanu Reeves gets pulled into the carriage by the dead horseman. I was terrified and had reoccurring nightmares afterwards for years. Now I have been giving the opportunity to create a film which young children can accidentally walk in on and be traumatized for years. Please help me make this happen. Just kidding.

But in all seriousness, I would love to be a part of this project, and I hope after you view my screentests, you would like to see me as a part of it as well. Your vote means more to me than you know, and if you take a moment and chose me as your leading lady, I devote myself to helping create the next best horror film the world has ever known.

Thank you to all and best wishes in your endeavors,

Shayla Beesley

With the release of Hellboy II just under two months away, we're starting to get inundated with news of Guillermo del Toro and his upcoming projects. The Guadalajara-born writer, director and producer has definitely hit a stride since the success of Pan's Labyrinth a few years ago. Variety drops a big update on a number del Toro's upcoming projects, which include the joint effort with Peter Jackson on the two-part Hobbit movie, an adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's "At the Mountains of Madness", and a producer role in the adaptation of a novel called "Hater".

Dear Readers,

My name is Bobby Howard and I'm an actor currently residing in the Las Vegas area.

I've been studying the craft for the last 10 years and have studied under some of the best coaches including Lara Mazour, Marko Sakren and at the famed Second City Improv school.

Over the years I've been fortunate enough to hone my skills by working on a variety of independent projects, including over a dozen short films - two of which earned top honors at the Sping Flicks and Cinevegas films festivals in their respective categories. I recently had the opportunity to shoot two screentests for After Dark Films PERKINS' 14 which are viewable at Massify.Com. This is the first "fan picked" film and everyone on the site is allowed to vote. I'd greatly appreciate the support from anyone who has a few minutes to spare out of their day. You do have to register to vote. You'll find the screentests under the competitions link on the massify main page. Mine is Massify.com/auditions/733.

I feel I deserve your votes and the role, because I've stayed indebted to this craft and have studied over the years to further my understanding of acting as well as the film making process in general, I've studied film and theatre at the University level and really have fully invetsted myself into this profession. Thank you so much, I look foward to hearing from all of you!

Warmest Regards,
Bobby Howard

Brutal Massacre

BRUTAL MASSACRE: A COMEDY

Special Edition DVD features more than 17 extended and deleted scenes
BURBANK, CA – Just when you thought it was safe to turn on your DVD player ...Anchor Bay Entertainment will release BRUTAL MASSACRE: A COMEDY, the irreverent mockumentary about the horror film shoot from Hell! The film will be available on DVD July 22nd. Written and directed by Stevan Mena (MALEVOLENCE) and boasting an all-star cast of horror film legends - all in comedic roles - Brutal Massacre: A Comedy is a hilarious look into the chaotic world of low budget independent filmmaking, as a once-successful horror film director tries to make his comeback vehicle. The Brutal Massacre DVD goes even deeper behind-the-scenes of this cross-genre epic, with a “making-of” featurette as well as 17 extended and deleted scenes!

“If "This is Spinal Tap" and "Office Space" could spawn, they’d give birth to Brutal Massacre.”
- FeoAmante.com

Brutal Massacre: A Comedy is becoming the toast of the horror convention circuit, including recent cast appearances at HorrorHound Weekend, Chiller Weekend and Fangoria Weekend of Horrors in Los Angeles – where the ENTIRE headline cast appeared on stage to discuss the film! Delivering laughs in the best mockumentary tradition of This Is Spinal Tap, Brutal Massacre gives fans of horror and comedy a “Best in Horror-Show” performance featuring such horror and comedy film luminaries as David Naughton (AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON); Brian O’Halloran (DOGMA); Gerry Bednob; Gunnar Hansen (TEXAS CHAINSAW MASACRE, GIMMIE SKELTER); Ellen Sandweiss, Betsy Baker and Theresa Tilly, aka “The Ladies of THE EVIL DEAD,” Ken Foree (DAWN OF THE DEAD, FROM BEYOND, THE DEVIL'S REJECTS), and Vincent Butta.

Brutal Massacre
In the film, Naughton plays Harry Penderecki, a once heralded horror auteur who now finds himself on the outside looking in at Hollywood. Though renowned for such groundbreaking horror classics as I'll Take the Ring Back and the Finger Too! and Sasquatch at the Mall, he hasn’t had a hit in a while and most in the industry have scratched his name off their “A” list.

But Harry isn’t completely down and out. He’s embarking on what he hopes to be his return to the big leagues with Brutal Massacre. Reuniting his longtime filmmaking team, Harry also has the entire production shadowed by documentarian Bert Campbell (Butta). But what starts as a successful convention appearance announcing the start of filming quickly devolves into a battle of Sisyphean proportions to capture even a single, usable frame of footage. Between incompetent special effects artists, temperamental actors, bad location advice, sexual shenanigans, on-set tragedies and the usual budget overruns, Harry struggles to keep his sanity while facing overwhelming obstacles to finish the picture and find himself at the top once again.
