Universal Dead
From Vernon Mortensen
UNIVERSAL DEAD
DB Sweeney (HEAR NO EVIL, SPAWN), Gary Graham (ROBOT JOX, ALIEN NATION [TV], NECRONOMICON) and sci-fi Horror Thriller fan favorite Doug Jones (DOOM, HELLBOY [all], PAN'S LABYRINTH, QUARANTINE) have joined the cast of UNIVERSAL DEAD, a new web series from San Diego based Unconventional Films. The series also stars four former US Navy SEALs (including Cade Courtley, host of Spike TV’s hit show Surviving Disaster) and the lovely Valerie Perez (star of the online hit “Paula Peril”).

Universal Dead takes place five years after a zombie apocalypse in a world that’s just barely hanging on. A group of Navy SEALs escort a doctor from the Center for Disease Control on a mission to investigate a possible cure for the zombie plague.

“The idea of using real Navy SEALs in this series came to us during the writing process,” says Unconventional Films co-owner and series producer, Neil Trusso, who is also a former Navy SEAL. “Why not get the real deal and make the action even more authentic?” The web series was created by Unconventional Films co-owners Vernon Mortensen, a former US Navy SWCC and feoamante alumni, Kelly Parks, the world’s only Ex-CIA/Rocket Scientist/Stand-up Comic/Screenwriter.

Unconventional Films has 10 web series in development and is the “new media” arm of indie production / distribution company, Rogue Arts. Rogue Art’s latest feature film, Chamaco, a Mexican boxing drama starring Martin Sheen, Michael Madsen and Kirk Harris, hits theaters soon.

Once the pilot episodes of Universal Dead are completed Unconventional Films will screen them for all interested distributors.

Paranormal Activity
YOU DUG IT
UPDATE:
Opening this week on 1,945 screens, PARANORMAL ACTIVITY walked away with the #1 slot for the weekend with $21 million. Rare is the movie that starts at #5 and rises to #1, but you made it happen with this underdog of a great Haunted House tale.

You also dug SAW VI, which opened on 3,036 screens, though not as much as in past years. It came in at #2 with $14 million. It is said that Lionsgate wants to go at least until SAW X. Other Horror Thriller franchises have tried it. We'll see if SAW has the legs.

While I'm on the subject. You know, SAW cost 1.2 million to make in 2003 (1.4 million adjusted for 2009 inflation). In the U.S., it grossed $55 million plus change in 2004 ($63 million plus adjusted for 2009). That made it a smash hit.

PARANORMAL ACTIVITY, at #1, has grossed, to date, $62.5 million. It's possible that, by the time it leaves the box office top ten, it will have breached the $100 million mark. And it did it all by busting every cliche convention of Hollywood Horror Thriller formula.

"Distributors won't want it if it doesn't have sex and nudity!" FAIL!
"Distributors won't want it if it doesn't have stars!" FAIL!
I'd like to know what distributors turned down PA because it didn't fit their hoary old formula.

You are still digging WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE, which only fell to #3 and a very close margin in favor of the new SAW VI. ZOMBIELAND slowly sinks to #10 after an impressive run at the box office. Personally speaking, I'm getting ZOMBIELAND on disc and I'm hoping for some great DVD extras!

YOU BURIED IT
The animated Thriller, ASTROBOY opened on 3,014 screens at #6.
STEPFATHER, which opened last week at #5 with over 2,700 screens, sank to #8 this week.
You REALLY buried CIRQUE DU FREAK: THE VAMPIRE'S ASSISTANT, deep! It opened at #7 on 2,754 screens. What all three of these movies had in common was poor support (marketing and advertising) from their distributors and really uncompelling trailers. I go to the theaters every week, and I don't even recall seeing trailers for these movies (I saw them online, only).

HAPPY HORROR THRILLER BIRTHDAYS TO -
And on Sunday -
When it comes to Horror in modern cinema, it's hard to ignore the woman who was and is the green light to so many writers and directors. Happy Birthday to
Producer Gale Ann Hurd (THE TERMINATOR, ALIENS, ALIEN NATION, TREMORS, TERMINATOR 2 , CAST A DEADLY SPELL, THE RELIC, VIRUS, HULK, TERMINATOR 3, AEON FLUX, THE INCREDIBLE HULK, PUNISHER: THE WAR ZONE, and more!) who is 53 today.
Look for Gale's upcoming Thriller, MERCURY, slated for 2011.
And on Saturday -
Composer Bill Wyman (PHENOMENA, DARIO ARGENTO'S WORLD OF HORROR, OPERA) is 73.
Writer Jon F. Merz (THE INVOKER, THE FIXER, THE DESTRUCTOR, THE SYNDICATE, DANGER-CLOSE) is 40.

Cirque Du Freak
HEY FREAK!
Screenwriter, Brian Helgeland, co-wrote the screenplay for Darren Shan's bestselling vampire series, CIRQUE DU FREAK: THE VAMPIRE'S ASSISTANT, which opens nationwide today in the U.S.

Helgeland has the fortunate misfortune of writing screenplays that everyone thinks are blockbuster winning material, that are then made into box office losers that tank in the theaters and disappear from the video store shelves within months. After over 20 years of movies made from his screenplays, only 3 out of 19 movies were profitable in the U.S.:
A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 4: THE DREAM MASTER
L.A. CONFIDENTIAL
MYSTIC RIVER

Brian it seems can write a damn good solid screenplay, but few directors and producers can make a damn good solid movie out of it. Then again, there aren't that many damn good solid directors like Curtis Hanson and Clint Eastwood out there either.

For fans of Horror, Thriller, Mystery, and Suspense, the upcoming CIRQUE DU FREAK, is firmly in Helgeland's winning territory of Horror, Thriller, Mystery, and Suspense.

On the other hand (and seriously, as a Horror Thriller film fan I could cry) CIRQUE DU FREAK: THE VAMPIRE'S ASSISTANT, is co-wrote and directed by Paul Weitz.

THIS Paul Weitz!
Writer: Antz, Nutty Professor II: The Klumps, About A Boy, In Good Company, American Dreamz.

Producer: In Good Company, American Dreamz, Bickford Schmeckler's Cool Ideas, Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist.

Director: In Good Company, American Dreamz.

Despite the fact that Paul is co-helm of the script and Captain of the movie, I'd like to think that it could still be saved by the Producers. THESE are the producers!

Ewan Leslie: She's The Man, The Secret Life Of Bees, Hotel for Dogs.

Lauren Schuler Donner, who had a good run in the 1980s when she was paired up with John Hughes, saw a noticable downturn without him in the late 1980s, throughout the 1990s. This is what she has produced in the last ten years. Any Given Sunday, X-MEN (Lauren is attached to the franchise including XMEN 3 and XMEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE), Timeline, Constantine, She's The Man, Unaccompanied Minors, The Secret Life Of Bees, Hotel For Dogs.

Well, how does the studio feel about it? Are they supporting it? Actually, it's not often you see Universal Studios give so little support to a movie that they had a hand in making. I think there are more seeds on a sesame seed bun than the number of times a CIRQUE DU FREAK commercial has run on TV or the Internet.

Naturally there have been times in history that a studio had no idea what a cool film they had and didn't support it. Universal did that with DAWN OF THE DEAD (2004). Then again, Universal doesn't make these mistakes too often. Not like Lionsgate or Miramax / Dimension, now Weinstein Company, who are currently sinking beneath the waves of their bad decisions (although Lionsgate does real well with SAW - which they originally wanted to release straight to video). Good thing they were able to "get it" about Tyler Perry, the only person that keeps Lionsgate afloat (I know SAW also keeps Lionsgate afloat, but SAW isn't a person, capiche?).

So I'm going to see Universal Pictures production of Darren Shan's novel, CIRQUE DU FREAK: THE VAMPIRE'S ASSISTANT anyway, of course. And I'll give you my take on it, of course, and you can take it from there.

You know him, you love him, but avoid that third rail of: Can't Live Without Him! Anyway, every Horror fan's favorite living film maker,
Writer / Director / Producer / etc. Sam Raimi (THE EVIL DEAD, EVIL DEAD 2, ARMY OF DARKNESS, DARKMAN, MANIAC COP, INNOCENT BLOOD, THE GIFT, SPIDER-MAN [all], THE GRUDGE, 30 DAYS OF NIGHT, DRAG ME TO HELL) is celebrating a half century of being himself!
Raimi has announced more movies in production for 2009 including a remake he's producing of THE EVIL DEAD.
Today's birthday boy died of cancer only a few weeks after his 66th birthday in 2008. So I wish a posthumous, and final, birthday wish to
Writer / Director Michael Crichton (THE ANDROMEDA STRAIN, WESTWORLD, THE TERMINAL MAN, COMA, LOOKER, RUNAWAY, JURASSIC PARK, LOST WORLD: THE JURASSIC PARK, SPHERE, THE 13th WARRIOR) who would have been 67.
Michael's novel, PIRATE LATITUDES, will be posthumously published November, 24, 2009. Michael's friend, Steven Speilberg, will make the movie (producing and possibly directing) with Screenwriter David Koepp.

Zombieland
YOU DUG IT
For the second weekend in a row, PARANORMAL ACTIVITY has defied expectations and hit the Box Office high-end of the top 10, actually rising to #3, with far less than even 1,000 screens. And bear in mind that it is competing with feature films that are placed in 3,000 screens and up!

PARANORMAL ACTIVITY, $20 million plus box office weekend, is shaking up Hollywood and not in a good way. I've had the opportunity to speak to a number of various studio execs this week (who prefer anonymity). Without exception, every one of them are dismissing the success of PARANORMAL ACTIVITY as a fluke. Small wonder: If box office hits can be made for thousands, defying all Hollywood conventional wisdom about the many stock items your movie needs to interest audiences, how can you justify the multi-millions you are asking for yourself and your films? For example, one source told me that Jerry Bruckheimer's upcoming PRINCE OF PERSIA is already in the negative for over $330 million. Which means PRINCE OF PERSIA has to outperform the top U.S. box office movie of all time (TITANIC), just to break even! And it's based on an old video-game!

Whew! Good luck with that!

But if there is a genre movie that was worth every penny of its $24 million plus budget, it has to be ZOMBIELAND. You're digging ZOMBIELAND, which dropped to #7 this week on 3, 171 screens. It's now in the profit zone and is expected to make back an after-theater cut of almost double its budget. Last week's #1, Couples Retreat, dropped a staggering 3 places to #4, but could break even before leaving the charts.

You turned out for the children's monster movie WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE, which captured #1 in it's first weekend with $32 million plus. The immense, multi-generational audience cache earned your interest, now let's wait for next weekend and see if you actually dig it (a drop to 4 or more in its second weekend means You Buried It).

YOU BURIED IT
STEPFATHER debuted on 2,718 screens at #5. That's bad, m'kay?
Amazingly, SURROGATES with a 55% drop from last week, stays in the top 10, holding on to #9 in it's 4th weekend. Its nowhere close to breaking even.

Slime City Massacre
From Greg Lamberson
SLIME WRAP
The 26th and final segment of the SLIME CITY SURVIVOR webisode series, detailing the production of SLIME CITY MASSACRE, has gone live. The episode features an interview with Roy Frumkes, who appears in the film as Ronald Crump, a villainous real estate tycoon who hires a group of mercenaries to wipe out Slime City's homeless population. Frumkes discusses STREET TRASH and STREET TRASH 3 in addition to SLIME CITY MASSACRE, which was written and directed by Gregory Lamberson and produced by Marc J. Makowski. The film stars Debbie Rochon, Lee Perkins and newcomers Jennifer Bihl and horror author Kealan Patrick Burke.

"Phil Gallo has completed the first cut of the film and I couldn't be happier with his work," says Lamberson. "Phil composed the score for the original MOTHER'S DAY and directed the crime drama WEST NEW YORK and a quirky indie comedy called MATTIE FRESNO AND THE HOLFLUX UNIVERSE, so he understands horror, he understands action, and he understands character moments, all of which come into play in SCM. Mars from Dead House Music is almost finished with the score, and it's a fantastic piece of work, very memorable. In addition, Stephen Romano (SHOCK FESTIVAL) has completed 10 of the paintings I commissioned for our title sequence; they're really striking. Now a big chunk of the remaining work falls to R.J. Sevin of Creeping Hemlock Press and Arick Sczymecki, who are in charge of our digital effects."

SLIME CITY MASSACRE will be completed by the end of this year, and Lamberson has already arranged its world premiere at a film festival in February; an announcement is forthcoming.

"One unusual aspect of this film from a production standpoint is just how many of its personnel are also involved with horror publising," says Lamberson. "Besides Kealan and R.J., our executive producer is noted short story writer and publisher John Maclay; Richard Chizmar from Cemetery Dance publications is an associate producer; Sephera Giron, who has a role, is a horror and erotica author; and Medallion Press, which just published my novel PERSONAL DEMONS, has put up the completion money through their new division, Medallion Movies. So it's a real melting pot of people from the two different horror mediums."

SLIME CITY MASSACRE co-stars Robert Sabin and Mary Bogle, who starred in the original, and Brooke Lewis. The film features appearances by such Lamberson alumni as Dick Biel (SPLATTER UNIVERSITY), Tom Sweeeny and T.J. Merrick, and a special "disappearance" by Lloyd Kaufman. Lamberson is previewing scenes from the film at the Central Terminal Halloween Bash, featuring Rochon as a guest, in Buffalo this Saturday, October 24th.

MEANWHILE ON THE MOUNTAIN
This weekend of October 16-18 will be the Big Bear Film Festival. On that very same weekend, about 100 miles away in Los Angeles, will be the much larger annual Screamfest Film Festival. And at the Staples Center, is the Film, Stage, and Showbiz Expo. Everyone of us has a favorite something and among those we have favorite movies. Now among those whose favorite movies moved the masses, it's easy to find camaraderie. Hell, if you are all about A Nightmare On Elm Street, Friday the 13th, Halloween or even Chucky, there is seemingly no end to the number of fellow fans you can meet and stuff you can buy to comfort that personal, fan-ish part of yourself that just has to go beyond the movie and treasure some little keepsake of your enjoyment of the film.

But what if you're a Phan?

Human Centipede
WE DARED TO DREAM
Word is getting around about a movie out of the U.K. and Netherlands called HUMAN CENTIPEDE. It's raison d'etre is the maimed human oddity the whacky German scientist Dr. Heiter (played by Dieter Laser) creates. Said mad doctuer is out to mouth a mouth to anus human centipede. You read that right, an anus to mouth human centipeded (depending on where you begin on the thing). Why would he do such a thing? To fulfill a lifelong dream! Hey, you gotta have a dream and this is how the doctor rolls!

Sooner or later as a Horror movie fan, you are bound to run into the one note gratuitous gimmick film, (SOCIETY comes to mind) but I'm stupified if I can think of a reason why a such a movie with a desperate shock value gimmick like this, would go anywhere. I mean once the trio of folks have been properly butchered, maimed, sewn together, healed and such, there's nothing left but them gasping farts and crying about their wretched luck with choosing doctors. I'm not being overly critical of a movie I haven't even seen yet (beyond the trailer) but once you become part of an mouth to anus centipede, well there's no coming BACK from that!

And if you are the doctor who did it? Once they've trussed yer ass and thrown you in jail to await trial, you'll have no trouble at all finding a whole team of lawyers (especially in Glendale, California, and they'll blame your victims to boot) to love and defend you and invite you into their homes to sit and have meals with their family - but good luck finding a sympathetic jury!

Watching the perfunctory trailer and seeing the movie poster, it seems that the very point of this film is the end all be all, and since the trailer is so generic and the poster basically reveals the same, I have to wonder how many people are interested in watching a 90 minute long softcore make-up SFX version of 2 Girls 1 Cup?

Still, who am I to talk? For all I know, Dutch Avant Garde film maker Writer and director Tom Six has made the Ultimate Anus-to-Mouth Horror Thriller movie. HUMAN CENTIPEDE could very well be the watershed event Horror Movie, akin to NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, JAWS, ALIEN, or SAW, which will inspire decades of Anus-to-Mouth Horror movies of ever decreasing talent and inspiration.

The comment boards on various sites are talking about it. Hell, it's getting LOTS of talk! But the talk is mainly from the very Horror Thriller audience such movie would want to attract, and those folks are saying things like... Well, I'll let you check it all out for yourself, including the trailer.

There Just Aren't Enough Mouth-to-Anus Human Centipede Movies Anymore
