SHRIEKFEST FILM FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES 2009 SCHEDULE
40 FILMS * 4 NIGHTS * 3 THEATRES!
OCTOBER 1-4, 2009
(Los Angeles, CA) SHRIEKFEST INTERNATIONAL HORROR FILM FESTIVAL is thrilled to announce the full, expanded schedule for the ninth annual horror film festival, returning to Raleigh Studios Chaplin/Pickford/Fairbanks theatres, October 1-4, 2009.
Festival goers will once again enjoy the finest in independent cinema from around the globe, selected from hundreds of submissions that came in everywhere from London to New York; from Utah to Spain. From our opening night screening of the never before seen MANEATER starring Dean Cain, to the shorts from Spain, United Kingdom, Canada, and finally to the World Premiere of Darin Scott's "Dark House". The 9th Annual Shriekfest International Horror Film Festival has worked hard to present a festival as diverse as the fans of the Los Angeles city itself.
American independent films are also well represented this year, on Friday, October 2nd – HOW TO BE A SERIAL KILLER, as well as SHELLTER and DAWNING, both of which are screening on Saturday, October 3rd. We can't leave out SURVIVING EVIL starring Billy Zane, Evilution, and Evil Angel starring Ving Rhames.
Not to leave out our fabulous selection of short films. Movies like HOWLING BRAT, MAROONED?, 2095, DEATH IN CHARGE, THE HORRIBLY SLOW MURDERER...,DARK ROOM THEATER, REKINDLED, AND FANTASY and the stunning RIFT challenge the viewers with provocative, well crafted original stories.
We have an amazing documentary, NIGHTMARES IN RED, WHITE, AND BLUE that examines the idea that horror films reflect the times and places in which they are made...narrated by horror icon Lance Henriksen and features exclusive interviews with legendary auteurs like John Carpenter, George A. Romero, Joe Dante, Larry Cohen, and Roger Corman, as well as film historian John Kenneth Muir and Fangoria editor Tony Timpone.
Once again SHRIEKFEST Film Festival exceeds at challenging the idea of what a horror film festival should screen, with eclectic selections (NO-DO: THE BECKONING), to science fiction (ENIGMA), comedy (COLD CALLS), Gothic Fairytale (SPIKE), and even the bizarre (LO).
All films are un-rated, and unless specifically noted no one under 17 will be admitted without a parent or guardian's accompaniment or permission. For more information on THE 2009 SHRIEKFEST FILM FESTIVAL, as well as news about other related events, including the Opening Night Party and the monthly networking events, please visit our website: Shriekfest.com |

BLOOD & GUTS HORROR FROM THE UK
STARSCAPE PRESENTS: DEAD (24 page US-sized comic)
Zombies have invaded the Wild West. All that stands between the hungry mouths of the living dead and the last refuge of salvation is one kick-ass beautiful female sheriff. Recommended for fans of The Walking Dead and other zombie horror comics. A self-contained horror tale from Gary Simpson (2000AD, Engine Comics) with quite breathtaking art from Lee O'Connor (Vurt, Shelf Life and Iraq: The Graphic War).
COLLECTED HOOK JAW (104 page graphic novel) From the pages of the million sales-per-month Action comic (UK) comes the collected edition of the man-eating great white shark, Hook Jaw! Eventually banned for its graphic violence after a media outcry, this forerunner of 2000 AD sees blood-n-guts and limbs-a-flying mix with environmental issues. This collection comprises the two pre-ban storylines. By Pat Mills (2000AD, Charley's War, Slaine, Marshall Law etc.) and Ken Armstrong (Flesh, Dan Dare and other uncredited stories), Ramon Sola (Action, 2000AD, Battle etc) and Felix Carrion. The horrific nature and young audience of Action weekly led to prohibition campaigns by the Evening Standard, the Sun and the BBC.

XOMBIE TIME!
Back in Tulsa, Oklahoma, 2003, a young man with a Macromedia flash program, James Farr, made himself writer, director, producer, and animator of what would become the Internet mega smash webisode animated series, XOMBIE.
By the time the webseries ended in Sept. 2007, XOMBIE had over 13 million freaking views!
The episodes were compiled, put on DVD, and sold in stores like Best Buy and online at amazon.com.
Action figures, comic books, comic book conventions, keychains, and t-shirts later, Cindi Rice (AN ORDINARY KILLER, DEMON HUNTERS, XOMBIE: DEAD ON ARRIVAL) and John Frank Rosenblum (CANNIBAL! THE MUSICAL, ORGAZMO), along with co-producer, Sean Fernald (RED VELVET), spent the next few years trying to bring XOMBIE to the notice of major Hollywood studios.
Together they promoted the idea of a live action movie to brand James Farr's creation.
XOMBIE follows Dirge, a sentient zombie: A varmint that never lost his mind after death, but has to negotiate the safe transport of a live little girl through the mindless, ravenous zombies stalking a post-apocalyptic World.
In early 2009, the writing producing team of Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci (THE ISLAND, TRANSFORMERS [all], STAR TREK, FRINGE), became interested in XOMBIE. So interested in fact, that they hired screenwriter and LAPD still-working-cop, Will Beall, to write the live action version of XOMBIE.
I was hanging out last night with Co-Producer, Sean Fernald, who got the call around 11:00pm from Cindi that after years of development, out of the clear blue, Hollywood Reporter leaked the news online that Dreamworks was negotiating with Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci about XOMBIE.
Creator James Farr went online early this morning saying that he hopes by this time next year, "We'll all be on a panel at ComicCon."
Excited after hanging up the phone, Sean said, “We're also doing a fully animated motion-capture version of the Devil's Due graphic novel, XOMBIE: REANIMATED, which will be directed by Matt Pizzolo (graphic novel and soon to be feature film, GODKILLER). And we're casting celebrity voices right now. The names are going to be pretty exciting!”
“There will also be a full feature length animated movie incorporating plot lines from XOMBIE: DEAD ON ARRIVAL and REANIMATED. We're partnered with Radical Axis on this.”
When I left Sean last night, he was pretty stoked. I had the feeling if I put a lightbulb on him it would glow.
Now, wasn't it just two years ago in 2007, when the announcement came out of Hollywood that Vampires and Zombies were dead for feature films, they were clearing their shelves of them and they didn't want to see anymore vampire and zombie scripts?
And just as they were sweeping out the last remains of their undead movies, what should happen but I AM LEGEND, TWILIGHT, and TRUE BLOOD go bongo hit time. Independents punched through with FLIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD and DANCE OF THE DEAD. Films out of Europe wowed us all with OUTPOST, LET THE RIGHT ONE IN, and DEAD SNOW, and zombies were still here in a big way with video games like DEAD SPACE and LEFT 4 DEAD.
If only Hollywood had listened to us Horror Thriller fans instead of making three years of tedious, twinky little torture porn flicks and half-assed remakes. When it comes to Vampires and Zombies, the dead ALWAYS rise! |
