Horror Filmmaker Eli Roth Talks Exorcisms in New Movie
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Since coming on to the horror film scene eight years ago with "Cabin Fever," filmmaker Eli Roth made a name for himself in the genre with the "Hostel" franchise. An occasional actor, he got a chance to shine last year as the infamous "The Bear Jew" in Quentin Tarantino's "Inglourious Basterds."

YOU DUG IT
$20.4 million isn't a big, wide U.S. theatrical release opening weekend in anyone's book. Unless your movie only cost $1.8 million, then you've pretty much paid for half of your distribution costs right there (approx. $10 million per thousand screens). A second weekend might cover it all. A third weekend might cover the advertising, and if your movie is still in theaters in its 4th weekend, its all gravy, baby! This weekend, THE LAST EXORCISM dished up the taters by claiming the #2 spot. You might just be digging it!
You're still digging THE EXPENDABLES. In its third week, it has past its box office break-even point, while dipping to only #3. We'll see if it can break its budget break even.
Bad news for recent releases meant good news for INCEPTION. In its 7th week, you continue to dig it, giving it a bounce from #9 last week, back up to #7 this week, even though its ticket sales were down by 37%.
YOU BURIED IT
VAMPIRES SUCK dropped a breath-stopping 57.2% and fell from #2 to #6. While it has broke its box office break even, it's highly unlikely that this will break even in the U.S. for 20th Century Fox.
Even worse news for PIRANHA 3D. If Facebook and Twitter chatter are any indication, people are staying away in droves from PIRANHA 3D instead of paying a premium price for a 3D movie that wasn't shot in 3D. I can personally attest that the 3D glasses they handed out in the Pacific theaters had tiny, awful lenses that pracitcally made you feel like you were looking through binoculars the whole time. What may account for much of PIRANHA 3D's loss and the modicum of VAMPIRE'S SUCK's gain, is that people come to the theater to watch the 2D version of PIRANHA, find there is no 2D version, so instead of paying the premium price, and since they are already there, buy a ticket for V.S. instead. That's just a guess on my part though.
Next Week's Plot:
Robert Rodriguez' exploitation Thriller, MACHETE! We've been waiting a long time for this one, amigos! |

UNIVERSAL DEAD
Universal Dead Takes on Zombies, Gets a Feature Deal
(gigaom.com) -- Oh, zombies. No matter how many times people say that the genre is dead, it comes back to life again. (Sorry.) But tales of the undead keep coming, not because of some virus-like infection, but because people keep finding new approaches to telling these stories: storytelling innovation that transcends medium.
The independently created web series Universal Dead, created by Kelly Parks, Vernon Mortensen and Neil Trusso, is just one example of this.

Indie Spotlight: Vernon Mortenson (Universal Dead and Unconventional Films)
It's not everyday that you see a totally original idea for a zombie film. Today I had that day! Vernon Mortensen is Director and Producer of Universal Dead. He is also a former U.S Navy SWCC. It is a real pleasure to sit down with an American Hero and one hell of a Director. With only three short webisodes, this film has me wanting more. So without delay, I present an interview on behalf of From Dusk Till Con preformed by yours truly...

Horror Realm is Pittsburgh's modern horror convention. Entering its second year in 2010, the convention celebrates the films, art, writing and culture of the modern era of the genre, which began with the release of George Romero's iconic zombie film, Night of the Living Dead, in 1968.
The Pittsburgh area has a rich horror history. Numerous horror movies have been filmed in the region including NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, the original DAWN OF THE DEAD, THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, INNOCENT BLOOD, THE MOTHMAN PROPHECIES, and MY BLOODY VALENTINE 3D, to name but a few.
Horror Realm is proudly produced by native Pittsburghers as a hometown convention celebrating the local horror influences as well as to serve as an attraction for horror

From David Byron
CINEMASSACRES!
In David Byron's fifth non-fiction book, CINEMASSACRES, he has assembled a vast array of special guests from the TV, film, and fiction industries, some that knew Forrest Ackerman personally, some who just wish to pay homage to the man known fondly as "Uncle Forry," and some who never met Forry but had always been fans of his work.
Also known as "Mr. Scifi," Forry made a historical breakthrough when he released the first issue of FAMOUS MONSTERS OF FILMLAND back in February of 1958. The magazine's success required a second printing to fill the public demand.
It's success spawned spin-off magazines like Eerie, Creepy, and Vampirella, and such noted publications as Fangoria, Scars, Gorezone, and Rue Morgue.
Within this book you will find personal memoirs and heartfelt farewells from:

'Star Wars' producer rolls into horror with 'Panzer 88'
Gary Kurtz, the producer of the first two "Star Wars" films and the man who walked away from the franchise in 1980, is not the excitable type. He speaks in even tones and pragmatic terms, but there was a clear tinge of eager energy in his voice when he sat down recently to discuss "Panzer 88," his first foray into effects-heavy feature films since the 1980s.
