Deceased Darling
After the release of James Cheetham's Canadian zombie series
Seasons of the Brittle Harvest was delayed, James found an innovative way to entertain his readers by offering them 'Zombie Makeovers'.
The makeovers consisted of sending James a photo he would then alter so the subject of the picture was no longer one of the living, but rather, one of the undead.
His work though amateur in the beginning, soon became a science, and James knew he was on to something when he could no longer keep up with the requests he found in his email.
'Cheetham's Zombie's was soon born, and the images once primitive and simple, had evolved into stunning, creepy versions of otherwise normal people, seeking a way to encompass their own dark side.
"Everybody has a zombie alter-ego," Cheetham insists, "that's really the best part of this. Everybody is an original zombie. No two are alike."
The original zombie alter-egos of his fans were available for order on everything from 'Officially Infected' one of a kind T-shirts, to actual portraits one could hang on the wall. It wasn't long before Eric Maciejkow came onto the scene.
"James contacted me asking if I wanted to try a Halloween collaboration. I was preoccupied with weddings and birthdays—it was still summer when I received his email. I took some time to think about it because it sounded a little crazy, but when I saw his work I realized he was on to something.

Born of the ghoulish cookie creations, the 2009 International Cheetham's Zombies Photo-Cookie Model Search began. Both Eric and James were stunned by the response...
"We had over 300 entries come in before we ever received any press. It was strictly through word of mouth on social networking sites like Myspace & Facebook." James explained. "We were stumbling through the contest, making it up as we went along, never expecting it to be that popular that fast."
With appearances at the Winnipeg Comicon and the Minneapolis Crypticon as well as media coverage on several levels, the Zombies didn't take long to break out of the confines of All Hallows Eve and become a year long concept.
"We get requests for weddings now, zombie walks, birthday parties, you name it—the dead are alive and well (and delicious)."

YOU DUG IT!
THE EXPENDABLES had to face down no less than five new wide release studio films this week including two Horror Thriller films and it handily kicked everyone's ass!
-AND - that's after a 52.6% drop in ticket sales from last week! THE EXPENDABLES were over $4 million in ticket sales from their closest competitor.
It appears that you might be digging VAMPIRES SUCK, the spoof of the TWILIGHT series made by the same people who have brought you a steady stream of unfunny crap that tanked at the box office and on DVD for the last four years. We'll see how it fares next week.
In its 6th weekend, INCEPTION couldn't face down the onslaught of five new movies and dropped from #4 to #9 this week. That's really only a 32.2% fall in ticket sales so it's doing quite well and, even though it won't reach studio profit in the U.S., it's cleared the hurdle in world wide sales.
DESPICABLE ME finally drops off the top ten after 7 weeks, falling from #6 to #11 with a hefty profit margin for Universal. Does Pixar and Dreamworks finally have competition in the world of feature length animation?
SALT slides from #9 to this week's #13 in its 5th week. It leaves the top ten just shy of breaking even at the box office.
YOU BURIED IT
Opening at #6, you clearly aren't digging PIRANHA 3D, which made a particularly poor showing in an exceptionally poor performing weekend. The combination of direction by remake master Aja Alexandro, advertising this as a "Blood & Boobs" movie (Nudity you say? Well gosh, Thad and Chandler! Let's just rush right the hell out and pay full ticket price then! Because we sure as shit can't get find free porn on the Internet!), and the fact that everyone knows* this 3D movie was really shot in 2D and then digitally refurbished into second hand 3D, may have been the losing ticket that kept yall from buying any.
Next week sees the opening of THE LAST EXORCISM and the limited theatrical release of Neil Marshall's CENTURION.

YOU DUG IT!
Action Thriller, THE EXPENDABLES blew the doors right off the competition this weekend. Sylvester Stallone, in his typical buck-the-trend fashion, gathered together a bunch of hardcore action actors, each with a small but solid fanbase, put them all into one movie, and promised his audience that this would be the high-octane action movie they've always wanted without the budgetary constraints. Apparently it worked, as the rumor is, THE EXPENDABLES budget (currently unlisted) broke even at the box office in its very first weekend, bringing in over $35 million. Sylvester Stallone movies have a history of always performing best when the script is written by Sly. The second weekend is always the true test as to whether or not audiences love a movie or were tricked by the marketing.
You also still dig INCEPTION, which in its 5th weekend, finally slides from #2 to #4. At a $160 million dollar budget, INCEPTION still has a way to go to acheive studio profit in the U.S., but its getting there.
You keep digging DESPICABLE ME, which stays steady at #6 in its 6th weekend. This kiddie Thriller (hey, we all started somewhere!) blew right past its profit zone a few weeks ago and has definitively cleared the way for the viability of 3D animated movies.
In its 4th weekend, SALT also retains some of its audience, dropping from #4 to #8 but with only a minus of 41.8% in ticket sales from last week. SALT has yet to break even at the U.S. box office and will not make profit in its first theatrical run.
YOU BURIED IT
You buried nothing this week, though it must be said that the biggest loser for the summer turned out to be 20th Century Fox. Every movie Fox entered this summer, (like PREDATORS) dropped off the top ten within 3 weeks. They have no movies in the top ten today and have only two movies on the entire top 40. How many more losses will 2009's AVATAR have to cover?
Before you answer that, 20th Century Fox has one more card to play before the summer is through. Next week sees the world release of Fox's VAMPIRES SUCK!, from the dream team of Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer: the directors, writers, and producers of Date Movie, Epic Movie, Meet the Spartans, and Disaster Movie.
I'm told that no one sets out to make a bad movie and no studio sets out to distribute one. But in this case I'll argue the point. |
