Tron: Legacy
QUICK BITES
Author Matthew Warner Says
Darkstone Entertainment of Charlottesville, Virginia, has released volume one of THE LOVECRAFT CHRONICLES. It contains three short films, two of which I co-wrote: Dumas and Leviathan. It also comes with a limited-edition booklet of a tie-in short story I wrote, titled Raven.

The premise of this series, created by John Johnson, is that the boundaries between our world and those of literary horror creations have weakened. Now, the monsters are coming to life. It's up to the far-flung descendants of the famous writers who wrote them to restore the natural order—by any means necessary.

THE LOVECRAFT CHRONICLES will be on sale at several horror conventions this fall, beginning with this weekend's Monster Mania in Hunt Valley, Maryland.

The "Boobs and Blood Film Festival"
is coming to Los Angeles on September 24-26, 2010 at the legendary New Beverly Cinema. This promises to be a fun filled weekend of amazing screenings, music, giveaways, comedy, burlesque, blood, and you guessed it... boobs! We are honored to be screening "Pervert!" on Saturday, 9/25 and are pleased to announce that star Mary Carey will be attendance.

This is a rare opportunity to see 'the most outrageous movie ever made' on the big screen with Mary and the cast and crew, including Sean Andrews and director Jonathan Yudis. We will also present a clip from our current movie "Sex Galaxy" -- the uncut love scene -- with an appearance by starlet Puma Swede. This should be a blast!

The Pros and Cons of Tron: Legacy
We jump into the MCP to discuss whether this film is awesome or not.
As we reach the final stretch of the filmgoing year (try not to think about the passage of time, try not to think of the passage of time...), the buzz machine will begin on what is, arguably, the final genre blockbuster of the year: Tron: Legacy.

WASSMOR

"Monsters" Sets Standard for Guerrilla Filmmaking
LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Director Gareth Edwards' sci-fi pic "Monsters" is being hyped as this year's "District 9," which does the movie a disservice as it sets it up against an unrealistic standard.

Both belong to the category of "elevated genre," where horror, sci-fi and monster movie tropes are smartly used to tell a not-so usual story.

But the movies are leagues apart, beginning with the $15,000 budget for "Monsters," arguably the most amazing example of guerrilla filmmaking this year.

Santa Sangre

FINALLY

"SANTA SANGRE" to make U.S. DVD/Blu-ray debut
One of the most-desired titles by Stateside disc collectors has long been Alejandro Jodorowsky's shocking and fascinating 1989 feature SANTA SANGRE. Now, Fango has received word that the acclaimed hallucinatory fantasy-chiller will make its American DVD/Blu-ray debut early next year.

Severin Films will release the discs January 25, 2011, derived from a restored print of the uncut European version. There will also be more than five hours of extras on the two-DVD set and Blu-ray, accompanying the saga of a young man, once a circus performer with his family, who escapes from an asylum and helps his armless mother get murderous revenge.

Inception
YOU DUG IT
For now, gone are the days when M. Night Shyamalan could deliver #1 weekends. Of the three live action movies that opened on a typically slow September weekend, M. Night's production, DEVIL, opened at #3. That ain't bad, but we'll see next week if you really dig it.
THE EXPENDABLES finally fell off the Top 10 charts after you dug it for 6 weeks, moving from #8 to #12.
You can't stop digging INCEPTION. Now in its 10th week, this 2D feature film jumped back up from #10 to #8 after losing 278 screens! Clearly a movie to be reckoned with, it made the leap on only 1,305 screens, which is anywhere from over a thousand to a couple of hundred screens fewer than any movies in the top 9 through 15!

YOU BURIED IT
No surprise here. As typical of the whole series, and with Paul W.S. Anderson back in the director's chair, RESIDENT EVIL: AFTERLIFE opened high with a mediocre ticket take in its first week and dropped like a stone in its second. The RESIDENT EVIL series has its cult audience in the U.S., but they are too small for the budget. Good thing RE has a world market in its favor. With a ticket sales drop of 62.5% in only its second week, it needs all the heroic life saving measures it can get.
Robert Rodriguez' MACHETE went into free fall in its 3rd weekend, dropping from #4 to #10. Making less than $1,000 per screen, losing 59.1% in ticket sales from last weekend.

In only its 4th week, THE LAST EXORCISM dropped off the top ten, falling from #7 to #14 and losing over 63.5% in ticket sales.

NEXT WEEK'S PLOTS
Though only in limited release, we'll see if you dig BURIED.
Also be on the lookout for the limited release of ENTER THE VOID.

'Haunted house' exploits real horror
Pennhurst shouldn't become a Halloween attraction.
For most of the last century, people with disabilities were considered "defectives" and forced into state institutions such as the notorious Pennhurst State School and Hospital in Spring City, Chester County, where neglect and abuse ran rampant. That began to change in 1977, when a judge ruling on a lawsuit against Pennhurst led by the Public Interest Law Center of Philadelphia held that the forced institutionalization of people with disabilities was unconstitutional. That led to the facility's shuttering in 1987.

Toronto International Film Festival: The spirit moves John Carpenter again
John Carpenter needed a break. It was 2001, and his latest film, the outer space thriller "Ghosts of Mars," had just flopped — at the box office and with critics. Creatively stymied and just plain exhausted by Hollywood and the moviemaking process, the director decided it was time to step away from the camera.

Hack/Slash
From Maddy Dawson
HACK/SLASH
Los Angeles, CA, September 13, 2010 - Halo-8 Entertainment has picked up the rights for award-winning filmmaker Matt Pizzolo (GODKILLER) to adapt the Tim Seeley comic book HACK/SLASH in the illustrated-film style Pizzolo designed with Emmy-winning producer Brian Giberson for GODKILLER, which opened theatrically in 11 cities earlier this year and sold through its first DVD pressing at San Diego Comic Con in July. Pizzolo intends to begin by adapting the HACK/SLASH series "My First Maniac," currently being published in comic book form by Image Comics. Halo-8 is planning to release the illustrated-film in 2011 as a double-feature with Pizzolo's previously announced adaptation of Seeley's LOADED BIBLE comic book.

Seeley said "I'm happy to have my two babies in the same crib, with a unique HACK/SLASH and LOADED BIBLE double feature. Viewers can get their horror and sacrilege in the same lovin' spoonful."

Godkiller sizzle reel from Halo-8 Entertainment on Vimeo.

Pizzolo said "Tim is not only a master storyteller but he's also completely nuts, and that combination makes for some fantastic comics. As a longtime fan of the series, it's a ridiculously exciting opportunity."

HACK/SLASH tells the ongoing adventures of Cassie Hack (daughter of the evil slasher known as The Lunch Lady), who rejected her mother's murderous ways and instead devoted her life to hunting down slashers with her partner Vlad. "My First Maniac" is the newest HACK/SLASH mini-series, going back to the beginning Year One-style and detailing Cassie's very first case.

LOADED BIBLE takes place after nuclear Holy War has decimated North America and left it populated by legions of vampires. When humanity's last stronghold New Vatican City is withering under the vampires' assault, the Church gives their people a hero by cloning Jesus Christ Himself... but all is not as it seems for the Test Tube Messiah as he's drawn into a web of betrayal, bloodshed, and seduction.

For a quick peek at ill-film styles, check the Godkiller sizzle-teaser posted on Vimeo

"Illustrated Film" is a new experimental-animation format designed by Pizzolo and Giberson that mixes motion comics with elements of anime, radio drama, and video games. Utilizing the sequential artwork from the comic book, the Illustrated Film adds motion animation, 3D CGI, visual effects, elaborate sound design, music, and dramatic voice performances. The format was developed for the dystopic transmedia series GODKILLER, which starred voice performances by genre-heroes Lance Henriksen (TERMINATOR, ALIENS, NEAR DARK), Danielle Harris (Rob Zombie's HALLOWEEN, Rob Zombie's HALLOWEEN II), Bill Moseley (HOUSE OF 1,000 CORPSES, THE DEVIL'S REJECTS), Nicki Clyne (Battlestar Galactica), Tiffany Shepis (ABOMINABLE), punk icon Lydia Lunch (Hardcore), and rockstars Justin Pierre (singer Motion City Soundtrack) and Davey Havok (singer AFI).

Resident Evil 3D
YOU DUG IT
You seem to dig RESIDENT EVIL: AFTERLIFE. Actually shot in 3D, this may have made an impression on you as U.S. audiences placed it squarely at #1 during an otherwise lackluster time of the year. And though that may sound like small potatoes, consider that at a $27 million dollar ticket take, RE:A took in more than four times as much as #2.
You continue to dig THE EXPENDABLES, which drops by 50.9% and two places from #6 to #8. Not bad though for 5 weeks at the box office.
And after 9 weeks you are STILL digging INCEPTION, which holds fast to #9 for the second week in a row. Seems audiences still aren't ready to put this one in the box.
Not all of you are digging THE LAST EXORCISM, but enough of you are to have it only slip from #4 to #7 in its 3rd week with a 53% drop in box office.

YOU BURIED IT
Robert Rodriguez' MACHETE slips from #2 to #4 with a staggering 63% drop in ticket sales. As a film maker, this is Robert's second failure in the past 3 months (PREDATORS was the first). Whatever the reason, Robert's going through a pretty bad time for movies right now and I sincerely hope he pulls out of it before he brings SIN CITY 2 to the screen. Those hot actresses in SIN CITY aren't getting any younger and some are having kids!

STILL ON THE SLAB
It must be noted that THE TWILIGHT SAGA: ECLIPSE, had it's second Under-the-Top-10 bounce. TWILIGHT SAGA: ECLIPSE, based on performance, added a whopping 791 screens for this weekend, and rose an amazing 71.6% in ticket sales. All of which moved it up from #26 to #18. After 11 weeks at teh box office, this makes it the #1 seller of the three TWILIGHT movies. Let's hear it for director David Slade!

NEXT WEEK'S PLOT
DEVIL. Though this has M. Night Shyamalan's name all over it, he didn't direct it and he didn't write the screenplay. It's from a story of his and he produced. So maybe this time it will actually be a good movie?

To get you in the mood for evil elevator movies, might I suggest THE SHAFT?

Stats from BoxOfficeMojo and IMDb.
