DON'T MESS WITH FIREFLY
So there's this theater Professor working in the University of Wisconsin - Stout. He puts a fan poster from the long since cancelled TV series, FIREFLY on his wall. The University cops take it down. It threatens people's lives, they say. It is not Free Speech, they say. Then they threatened the Professor with criminal charges if he ever put the poster up again.
This is a fan poster for a cancelled TV show, right?
So the drama teacher puts up a poster warning of the dangers of fascism. The University cops take that down too. Warning people of the dangers of Fascism is a threatening gesture and that's your second warning. It's not Free Speech. Your threatening the lives of the students will now go on your record.
So how did this all play out?

Over television's 60-some years, very few continuing horror series have truly taken hold in this country. "Dark Shadows" survived five years in the 1960s by blending camp and soap opera. Joss Whedon succeeded by making "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" into a "Beverly Hills, 90210" of the undead. "Supernatural" works because it is, in effect, about two brothers on a really long road trip, and "True Blood" pins its allure on sex and deep bayou weirdness.

RE-ANIMATOR
H.P. Lovecraft would be proud of this movie. Well, maybe. Okay, probably not. After all
his stories were almost as lifeless as his corpses and this intense horror
flick about the dead being brought back to life is lively indeed.
Before you start the frantic e-mail campaign telling me what a genius Lovecraft was
let me say that I agree. I enjoy his dry as a bone Freudian prose now
and again. But that doesn't mean there’s no room for improvement.
RE-ANIMATOR opens with German-speaking security guards breaking into a locked lab
to investigate horrific screams. Inside, young Herbert West (Jeffrey
Combs: FROM BEYOND, THE FRIGHTENERS) is leaning over his mentor, Dr. Hans Gruber (Al
Berry: HALLOWEEN III: Season of the Witch) who is in the throes
of a seizure that quickly results in an eye-popping cranial detonation
(not as good as SCANNERS, but pretty good).
We cut from this teaser to Miskatonic Medical Institute in Lovecraft’s imaginary
Arkham, Massachusetts. Medical student Dan Cain (Bruce Abbott: THE PROPHECY II, BRIDE OF RE-ANIMATOR) loses a patient
and takes the corpse down to the morgue. The acting here is far from Oscar
quality, but it's good enough.

Robert Dunbar's THE SHORE
There's almost nothing more satisfying to an avid reader of horror fiction—and, indeed, of all literature—to open the first pages of a favorite writer’s latest book only to discover breathtaking eloquence. And a damn good story. Robert Dunbar’s second novel, THE SHORE, delivers on both counts and squarely places him in the company of some of the genre’s finest writers: Peter Straub, Graham Joyce, and Tom Piccirilli—to name but a few.
The setting is winter, off-season in contemporary Edgeharbor, a decaying New Jersey shore town. Shop windows are boarded up, the population is sparse at best; even the beach is eroding and nearly non-existent. Dunbar excels at creating unnerving, palpable atmosphere through landscape and imagery: frost bleeds into a bare hand on a boardwalk, the nearly vacant Edgeharbor Arms is steeped in dingy gloom and layers of gray, odiferous dust.
His protagonist, Kit (Katherine) Lonigan, is a red-headed policewoman of infinite charm and brio. She's feisty and very witty; at the same time she can summon compassion for (say) an elderly recluse who is wheelchair-bound.

THE IRON SKY
From the Nazi-ass kicking country of Finland comes the Alternate History, SciFi comedy, IRON SKY. In 1945, upon the destruction of Germany's grip on Europe, the Nazi science heirarchy left their secret Antarctic base. Where did they go? They fled to the far side of the moon ("The Dark Side of the Moon!"). There they perfected their weapons technology for their long anticipated (for them) triumphant return to earth: To establish the Fourth Reich!
IRON SKY began production at least as far back as 2006. That's when I became their MySpace friend. So yeah, I've been waiting for quite some time! Since 2006, another retro SciFi comedy that I first friended on MySpace is now complete and making the Film Festival circuit: THE GHASTLY LOVE OF JOHNNY X.
Unlike that movie, however, IRON SKY comes loaded with expensive computer animation.

But director wouldn't give up too many details about the film due May 2013.
"We're shooting on film, 2-D, and then we'll do a good high-end conversion like the 'Harry Potter' movie and all that. Luckily, with our release date now we have the months needed to do it right because if you rush it, it never looks good.

The director who defined the horror sci-fi genre with Alien and Bladerunner, Ridley Scott, speaks about his upcoming film in the previews. The 30-second spots are counting down the days until the official trailer is released December 22. The previews contain behind-the-scenes footage, brief excerpts, interviews with Scott describing the film as containing dangerous elements that are capable of eviscerating all of them in a heartbeat and things that appear to be small but will actually be enormous.

How ironic – or poignant, perhaps – is it that the movie slate for 2012 is full of dark, twisted horror films, Armageddon-drenched fantasies, "ultimate baddie" superhero movies and gruesome re-imaginings of our favorite fairytales?
Are we to read that Hollywood has correctly tapped into the world's current economic gloom, providing us with a mirror of how we all feel right now? Filmmakers, after all, have historically been best at doing this: spotting a global psychological feeling and exploiting it, commenting on it, challenging it.

THE ATOMIC BRAIN
Have you read my review of THE BRAIN THAT WOULDN'T DIE? Yeah, this is another SciFi "Brain" movie from the early 1960s. Some movies are just so awful that they endure for no other reason but that they are just that bad. Plenty of overly-vocal critics decry the So-Bad-It's-Good ethos, but that doesn't stop it from existing and growing. The fact that a huge number of ever changing DVD distributors feel compelled to make their bread and butter on the backs of these public domain movies - and actually succeed at it - only means that whoever let these movies go to public domain was a fool. There's still tons of money to be made off of them. And I'm not talking miniscule little midwest video distributors. Even the American Movie Channel has got into the act, releasing this dross on DVD.
Take for example, this movie, THE ATOMIC BRAIN.
This awful offal starts out with a narrator (Bradford Dillman: JIGSAW, FEAR NO EVIL, THE MEPHISTO WALTZ, ESCAPE FROM THE PLANET OF THE APES, REVENGE, THE RESURRECTION OF ZACHARY WHEELER, MOON OF THE WOLF, CHOSEN SURVIVORS, THE DISAPPEARANCE OF FLIGHT 412, DEMON, DEMON, BUG [1975], THE SWARM, PIRANHA, LORDS OF THE DEEP) who talks through the whole movie right up until the very end. Affecting a jaded, cigarette voice, he casts his pithy judgements on everyone and enlightens nothing. Nothing he says throughout the movie does anything to expand the story and in fact, we almost immediately see what he is telling us. It's like someone sitting with you and describing the movie for a blind person.
