Don Sharp obituary
In 1962, Don Sharp was a minor ex-actor, hack writer and jobbing director of British B-films, when he was offered the chance to make a gothic horror movie for Hammer, "the studio that dripped blood". In the event, The Kiss of the Vampire (1963) rescued both Sharp, who has died aged 89, and Hammer from the doldrums.
The studio, which had suffered several expensive flops, turned to Sharp due to his experience in low-budget film-making. Sharp, who claimed to have never watched a horror movie, let alone directed one, quickly steeped himself in the Hammer style by spending a week or so watching past successes, principally those directed by Terence Fisher and Freddie Francis.

Parliament: Horror Genre The Utmost Favourite Of Moviegoers - D'Cruz
KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 20 (Bernama) -- Horror films are the utmost favourite of moviegoers in the country as compared to other genres, Deputy Information, Communications and Culture Minister Datuk Maglin Dennis D'Cruz said.
He said according to the National Film Development Corporation (Finas) Compulsory Screening Scheme's statistics, horror films usually recorded high returns.

THE BRAIN THAT WOULDN'T DIE
Some movies are so awful that they endure for no other reason but that they are just that bad. While there are more than a few overly-vocal critics of the So-Bad-It's-Good ethos, that doesn't stop it from existing or growing. and the fact that an uncountable number of ever changing DVD distributors feel compelled to make their bread and butter on the backs of these public domain movies - and actually succeed at it, only means that whoever let these movies go to public domain was a fool. There's still tons of money to be made off of them. And I'm not talking miniscule little midwest video distributors. Even the American Movie Channel has got into the act, releasing this dross on DVD.
Take for example, this movie, THE BRAIN THAT WOULDN'T DIE.
The movie begins with a black screen and a woman begging to be killed. Then we see some surgeons working on a man. The patient dies, Old Doctor Cortner (Bruce Brighton) gives up, and his son, Bill (Jason 'Herb' Evers: THE ILLUSTRATED MAN, ESCAPE FROM THE PLANET OF THE APES, CLAWS, BARRACUDA, BASKET CASE 2) asks to take over and try his experimental methods. Old Doc Cortner doesn't cotton to the idea. Saving lives is playing "God" doncha know? Yeah, but what has the patient got to lose? The poor dead patient might appreciate someone playing "God" to save his life!

DRACULA 2000
Have you ever watched a movie and didn't like it. But you have friends who love it and are convinced that, if you only see it again, you'll like it (such things are possible - maybe I was in a bad mood that day/evening I first saw it, who knows?) Then later on, you watch it again and kind of like it. With each subsequent viewing you like it a little more. You never actually love it, it's too flawed, but you learn to appreciate what the film makers were going for.
That's been my relationship over the past seven years with DRACULA 2000. There have been many attempts to update the Dracula mythos for a specific year. The Italian DRACULA 1971 comes to mind. The British DRACULA A.D. 1972 with Christopher Lee is another. And we even go into the future with the South African DRACULA 3000, which is not a sequel to this film.
Long time Wes Craven film editor, Patrick Lussier (THE PROPHECY 3, DRACULA II, DRACULA III, WHITE NOISE 2) took his second shot at directing a film he co-wrote with Joel Soisson (HOLLOWMAN II - he also produced this). With Wes Craven and the Weinstein Brothers as producers, Patrick pulled off what is arguably his best Horror movie ever (I'm arguing that it is his best).
