Harry Potter Alliance re-launches the "Not in Harry's Name" Campaign
Gives Warner Bros. New Years Eve deadline to decide stance on fair trade

Boston, MA – At this year's Quidditch World Cup, the Harry Potter Alliance (HPA) officially re-launched the "Not In Harry's Name" campaign. This effort, which began in November 2010, asks Warner Bros. (WB) to make all Harry Potter chocolate products Fair Trade. The HPA is giving Warner Bros. until midnight on New Year's Eve to respond to the HPA's most recent letter. In previous months HPA Executive Director Andrew Slack has amicably discussed the matter with WB, including CEO Barry Meyer. However, WB has since stopped communication with the HPA on the issue and insists that the company it employs to make Harry Potter chocolate, Behr's Chocolates, meets ethical sourcing standards while a third party company, Free 2 Work, has given Warner Bros. practices an "F" rating. This grade indicates that it there is a reasonable chance that chocolate sold in Harry Potter's name has been made by children kidnapped from their homes and forced to work as slaves on the Ivory Coast.

Centipede crawls out of Australian cinemas
A graphic horror movie has been banned by the Classification Review Board just three weeks after it made its Australian premiere at the Brisbane International Film Festival.

Originally classified R 18+ by the Classification Board in May, Human Centipede 2: Full Sequence was refused classification by the Review Board on Monday with the review team decrying its "gratuitous, exploitative or offensive depictions of violence", as well as its displays of cruelty.

Jesse Eisenberg Sues Claiming 'Camp Hell' DVD Cover Overplays His Tiny Role

Jesse Eisenberg (ZOMBIELAND) has filed a lawsuit against Lionsgate and Grindstone Entertainment for allegedly turning his less-than-five-minute cameo in the horror flick Camp Hell into an above-the-title star turn. The actor is using the Los Angeles Superior Court to make a point. According to the complaint, "Eisenberg is bringing this lawsuit in order to warn his fans and the public that, contrary to the manner in which Defendants are advertising the film, Eisenberg is not the star of and does not appear in a prominent role in Camp Hell."

Steve Rude Arrested, Discounts Art Prices to Pay for Bail and Legal Fees
It's with a heavy heart that we bring you more sad news from the world of Steve Rude. The co-creator of 1980s indie comics sensation Nexus and the illustrator of such memorably beautiful works as Superman/Batman: World's Finest has once again found himself in dire financial straits following an arrest earlier this week. According to a message sent to Rude's mailing list, the artist became involved in a physical altercation with his neighbors that resulted in Rude being taken into custody by Arizona's Maricopa County Sherif's Office. To help pay for Rude's bail and legal fees, prices have been lowered on the artist's original art sales. As of Tuesday night, Rude's family was able to raise enough to pay Steve's bail and a post on his Facebook indicates he's due to be released this morning.

Rabies
From Ed Peters
WILL YOU BE A RABID FAN?
Chatsworth, CA – Horror cinema has finally found its new source! On February 28, Image Entertainment introduces Israel's slasher film debut, Rabies. A festival favorite, garnering rave reviews at the Tribeca 2011 Film Festival and the Fantasia 2011 Film Fest, Rabies features a cast that devotees of Israeli cinema will surely recognize, including Lior Ashenazi (winner, Award of the Israeli Film Academy – Footnote), Ania Bukstein (nominee, Award of the Israeli Film Academy – The Secrets) and Ran Danker (nominee, Award of the Israeli Film Academy – Eyes Wide Open).

Rabies surprises and shocks with its unexpected combination of horror and humor, of paranoia and panic. When a psychotic serial killer is on the loose, his path of rampage crosses paths with Ofer and Tali, a brother and sister combo who have run away from home. But when Tali becomes ensnared in the killer's trap, it is up to Ofer to find help. Left alone, Tali soon becomes mixed up with an unlikely group of characters, ranging from a set of tennis players to a squad of policemen. All the while, they continue to be stalked by the murderer – and when this assassin's identity is finally revealed, it turns out to be the biggest shock of all!

Altered States
R.I.P. Ken Russell (1927 - 2011)
Review by E.C.McMullen Jr.
ALTERED STATES
It has been nearly 20^ years since ALTERED STATES was released and despite that amount of time, the movie still stands in every respect, even in Special Effects. ALTERED STATES, in accordance with Ken Russell's vision (THE DEVILS, GOTHIC, LAIR OF THE WHITE WORM), could not exist without special effects. Ken Russell's over abused Psychedelic Journeys, and his oft repeated imagery grafted onto film after film whether it worked or not, often threaten to overpower the movie itself. Discipline and care was taken to stop this on many levels.

1. The executives at Warner Brothers at the time wanted Ken to direct after
2. Original Director Arthur Penn (NIGHT MOVES, DEAD OF WINTER) got fed up with the shooting schedule and politics behind the scenes and quit in the middle of making the picture.

While Penn cannot hold a candle to Russell in terms of quantity of films directed, he more than makes up for that in the quality of films he has directed. At the time that Russell was drafted to finish directing ALTERED STATES, he was stumbling off of a very sporadic career that included way out celluloid LSD trips such as the musicals (or Rock Operas, if you prefer) Lisztomania and Tommy. The only noticable thing he did after ALTERED STATES was GOTHIC, a flawed masterpiece which raised his career up and THE LAIR OF THE WHITE WORM, an insipid and ridiculous piece that brought him back down. Fortunately for us all, Ken was brought in to direct the final scenes that involved the mind voyages. So Russell was a brilliant choice in that respect as he could take us from the staid and sterile old Boston centers of learning and smack into the extraordinary out of control excitement that knocks us out of our seats.

Ghost in the Shell 2
Review by E.C.McMullen Jr.
GHOST IN THE SHELL 2: INNOCENCE
With GHOST IN THE SHELL 2: INNOCENCE, Director and screenwriter, Mamoru Oshii (TALKING HEAD, GHOST IN THE SHELL, AVALON, ASSAULT GIRLS) continues to work off of Masamune Shirow's 1991 groundbreaking comic, KOUKAKU-KIDOUTAI aka GHOST IN THE SHELL.

There were many stories in that 300 plus page tome and even with a second movie, Oshii has only scratched the surface. This is mainly because Mamoru uses Masamune's stories as a launch pad to leap into realms Shirow never explored.

For GHOST IN THE SHELL 2, Mamoru goes after the Hanka story. In this case, the company, Hanka Precision Instruments becomes Locus Solus, but the story is essentially the same. Pleasure bot "Gynoids" are attacking their owners. There has been death and substantial injury, yet surprisingly, none of the families are suing the company. What makes this more surprising is that a politician was killed. This alerts the attention of the secretive Section 9, under the lead of Chief Aramaki (Tamio Ôki: APPLESEED, GHOST IN THE SHELL). Aramaki assigns his toughest agent, Batô (Akio Ohtsuka: 3X3 EYES, DARKSIDE BLUES, GHOST IN THE SHELL, THE ANIMATRIX) a new partner, Togusa (Kôichi Yamadera: DARKSIDE BLUES, GHOST IN THE SHELL, COWBOY BEBOP, VAMPIRE HUNTER D: BLOODLUST, GODZILLA VS. MEGAGUIRUS, GODZILLA, MOTHRA AND KING GHIDORAH: GIANT MONSTERS ALL-OUT ATTACK , GODZILLA: FINAL WARS, PAPRIKA, DEADBALL). In a world where there are very few un-enhanced humans, Togusa is mostly human whereas Batô is so artificial that even he isn't sure how much of the original him is left.

I Spit On Your Grave
Review by E.C. McMullen Jr.
I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE
Have you ever seen the original? You have? Well this version isn't better than the original, but it's not worse either. It's just different. It's like this...

Writer and Director Meir Zarchi's 1978 classic, I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE was made to be an out & out Revenge flick. It was written and directed to manipulate your feelings, repulse and shock your senses, and have you exult in the revenge of a woman who was unquestionably pushed too far.

As before, a 20 something woman named Jennifer (Sarah Butler: FLU BIRD HORROR) goes out to the middle of absolutely nowhere to write her new novel. Nothing wrong with that. Who doesn't want to hit the great outdoors for some peace and quiet? But Jennifer blithely does this without any protection at all. No gun, knife, not even a baseball bat. Hell, not even a dog to alert her if someone is coming. Nope. Completely frail and defenseless, Jennifer goes out to the woods. Worse, she naively lets the most threatening of the locals know about it. This jejune assumption that all is safe and serene with the world has never worked for any living creature in the history of ever. Life feeds life. Pioneers were well stocked with knives and guns in case of trouble. The only folks who have utterly alienated themselves in the remote backwoods without anything at all to defend themselves from anything at all, and came back alive, were the lucky ones. I'm not saying it can't happen, but it's playing Russian Roulette with three bullets in the chamber.

The Lost
Review by Monica J. O'Rourke
THE LOST
Ray Pye's a heck of a guy. Just your average, good looking, beer guzzling, drug abusing young man, shades of James Dean by way of slicked-back almost pompadoured black hair. Incredibly insecure, yet paradoxically a classic narcissist. Ray's slept with almost every young woman in the small town and doesn't hesitate to brag about it. Ray's the kind of guy every woman wants to bring home to meet her mother — as long as that mother is Mrs. Bates. Ray stuffs his cowboy boots with crushed beer cans to appear taller and walks with what is clearly a painful swagger. Ray wears eye liner and paints moles on his cheek.

And late one evening — in an intense sucker-punch of an opening — Ray transcends even his own juvenile delinquency and slides comfortably into the role of homicidal maniac. His victims are two young women (Erin Brown and Ruby Larocca) camping in the woods. Their crime? They might be "lezzies." Ray, using a stolen shotgun, systematically opens fire while best friend Tim Bess (Alex Frost), and girlfriend Jennifer Fitch (Shay Astar) watch in horror, standing by and doing nothing to stop Ray. Ray later sends his friends back to his apartment to pick up shovels to bury the victims. Ray discovers, shortly after rummaging through the girls’ belongings and enjoying their food, that one of the girls has survived and has disappeared into the woods. She manages to escape and is picked up by a passing van.

Bad Santa by Kerem Beyit
From Joe Pulver
TOYS FOR TOTS - HORROR STYLE
You give a child a toy. We'll give you a library!

A group of horror writers and artists have banded together to scare up some seasonal treats for less fortunate children this year. Seeking to provide joy to the hearts of children who might otherwise have a bleak holiday season, they are throwing down the gauntlet and issuing a challenge. If you are willing to provide a toy for a child, you will then in return be put into a drawing to receive an incredible library which includes magazines, books, even some signed first editions, and other rare and limited literary goodies.

Toys for Tots is a charitable foundation that provides toys for children whose parents are unable to do so during difficult times. By gifting a child with something as simple as a toy you give hope to them and their family and show them there are people out there who do indeed care.

The rules are simple; folks post 2 pictures of them donating. One shot of them holding the toy, one picture of the toy in the box. To show that the donation is valid they need to see that the toy is indeed in the box so that you can be entered into the draw for the ever growing pile of prizes. Pictures should be posted on the group's Facebook page. Only one entry per person is allowed. The final drawing will have all names thrown into a hat and one winner, chosen at random, will be the lucky recipient.

All of the artists involved in donating their creations to this cause are doing this purely to help those in need and felt giving back in this manner would be a great way to spur on the true generosity of the holiday season. They are not involved in any organization, or group, but wanted to show that those that thrill and chill your spines the rest of the year have warm hearts that enjoy seeing joy and laughter in the faces of those less fortunate.

Thank you to all of those who are able to donate and know that one simple act of kindness can inspire a lifetime of generosity in kindness from those that receive it.

For more information, visit Joe Pulver at This Yellow Madness.

The Abandoned
Review by E.C. McMullen Jr.
ABANDONED
American audiences are accustomed to Hollywood movies about an American abroad who runs into Merry Mishaps of the dark kind. Perhaps that's why, for THE ABANDONED, Spanish filmmakers decided to make a movie about an American abroad too. Amazingly enough, they don't paint the American tourist in the same broad cartoonish colors that Hollywood has been portraying them, lo these last 25 or so years. Then again, I was intrigued to see that Spain and Russia, at least in this movie, have a better understanding of just what an American is, than their Hollywood counterparts.

The movie begins with narration, and while I usually despise opening narration, this time, in a young girl's voice, we hear the reason for a journey that isn't exposition, and would have taken far too long to show. The narration is almost lyrical, and very brief, speaking over vistas of forests and mountains. It sets the tone for what is to come, without explaining why. In short, it draws you in.

Marie (Anastasia Hille: THE WISDOM OF CROCODILES, THE HOLE), arriving from the U.S., is a film producer in search of her roots. Sold as a Russian orphan in the 1960s, she's been forever separated from her own parents and, in a virtual sense, orphaned from her own daughter: the two are nearly strangers to each other - not out of dislike - but emotional distance. This is effectively communicated in a very brief phone call that speaks volumes in just a few short sentences.

The Lost Boys
Review by E.C. McMullen Jr.
THE LOST BOYS
1985, 1986, 1987. The reason these years mean something in horror and to the subgenre of Vampire horror is because in these three years, three movies changed the face of the way vampires looked.

When actor Max Shrek loomed into the monochrome theaters of the silent era, his Vampire - NOSFERATU (1922) - was a grotesquerie more in keeping with the visage Bram Stoker described in his book, Dracula.

Lon Chaney played a vampire as well, one that was just as hideous with an entire mouth filled with serrated teeth. These appearances came and went without setting a fashion among horror movies. But when Bela Lugosi, with his incredibly intense stare and Slavic good looks came across in the early talkies and finally gave voice to DRACULA (1931), he changed the way we thought of Vampires for the next 45 years. From then on vampires would be handsome or beautiful and above all, seductive.

When FRIGHT NIGHT came out in 1985 it starred Chris Sarandon who was more than able to portray a modern day vampire as suburban stud. But that was only when he was in his human guise. When the fangs came down, Sarandon's face transformed into a feral cast, with rubber appliances that gave him a wilder, animalistic appearance. Though FRIGHT NIGHT never made the kind of splash among audiences that Lugosi's DRACULA did, the idea of that primal, evil face took hold in the hearts of Hollywood film makers and was soon made into the stuff of legend.

Gojira
Review by E.C. McMullen Jr.
GOJIRA
Let me start off this review with a caveat. This caveat is to say that I'm fully aware that the original GOJIRA hasn't aged well. To today's audiences, even the original GOJIRA merely looks like some guy in a rubber suit. A cheap one at that. What's more, I'll even agree with you that the plot line, in several areas, stretches to breaking at many points. I'll grant you that.

But you'll have to accept the ranking I gave this movie for all of the reasons I explain. If you can deal with that from my point of view, then please read on and I'll share with you just why I love this damn movie.

First, put yourself in the place of an audience today. Except for grievous examples of poor computer animated graphics, like the re-worked Star Wars "Jabba the Hut", or the ILM end-boss in DEEP RISING, or the bug-eyed monkey thing in Lost In Space, or any number of other awful examples: audiences really like computer animated graphics. They love them in THE MATRIX and they love them in LORD OF THE RINGS. But the truth is, we are giving the movie makers slack because we want to enjoy the movie as a whole. We love the story like the first JURASSIC PARK, so we accept the limitations of the medium. At least it ain't some guy in a rubber suit!

Now put yourself in the theater seats of a 1954 Japanese audience, and two years later in the seats of an American audience.

Alien Apocalypse
Review by E.C. McMullen Jr.
ALIEN APOCALYPSE
begins with an opening narration that sounds like some "Dawn of time" bible documentary. It tells us that there were once trees on the earth of every kind. Then the Mites came, destroyed our trees, and put us into bondage.

And you know what? All of this opening narration and scenery doesn't mean a damn thing because this whole mess will be explained to our stalwart heroes, and so us, all over again.

Then a group of four astronauts come to earth. Captain Chuck Burkes (Michael Cory Davis: THE VAULT, RAPTOR ISLAND, CERBERUS, ALIEN SIEGE, PATH OF DESTRUCTION, MANTICORE), Kelly (Renee O'Connor: NIGHT GAME, FALSE IDENTITY, DARKMAN II, BOOGEYMAN II), Lt. (Neda Sokolovska: MAN WITH THE SCREAMING BRAIN), and Dr. Ivan Hood (Bruce Campbell: EVIL DEAD [all], DEAD NEXT DOOR, DARKMAN, FROM DUSK TILL DAWN II, SPIDER-MAN [all], BUBBA HO-TEP). They've already figured out that civilization has been destroyed. These astronauts were in cryogenic sleep for 40 years and that's when the alien invasion happened and everything went to hell. They walk about twenty yards over flat terrain, bitching and sniping at each other to pass for character development, and only then notice the burnt out towering husks of what was once the city of Portland.

Alien Nation
Review by E.C. McMullen Jr.
ALIEN NATION
Even when this movie was released in 1988, it was clear that either the tale would come true or the movie would age pretty damn quick. It was supposed to happen in 1991, a scant two years away from the release date. What's more, Ronald Reagan is still president for some reason even though he was already on his final term (his Veep, George Bush Sr., won the election to serve a term from 1988 to 1992). In other words, while the actual movie may take place in the early 90's, the visitors were among us "Right Now" circa 1988.

That's right, The Visitors. A curious band of genetically created alien slaves whose ship got sidetracked and wound up here on earth. They have all, largely, settled into Los Angeles - we seem to be the only country that would take them. They are smarter than us, stronger than us, and pretty much better than us in almost every other way. That said, the thousands of aliens quickly fall into the myriad of human traits that we know and love so well. Some are mental wrecks, too disturbed by life to be much more than milk-aholics (they get drunk on sour milk). Others are mental and moral wrecks, furiously savaging their neck of Los Angeles (the derogatory term for these visitors is Slags, hence, their ghetto is Slag Town) with street crime. Still others are prostitutes (nice to know that they can fit!), pimps, thieves; the whole shmeer of street denizen life. On the other hand, you have your wealthy and well to do Visitors: professionals, doctors, business people, and tycoons. In essence, they are yet another minority to deal with and to have assimilated into American culture. Those who are the most resistant to the ways of the U.S. are those who will take the longest to be accepted. As with any group of strangers in strange lands, there are those who try to belong and those who don't.
