Lemony Snicket's A SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS
Possibly the best Tim Burton movie I've ever seen was not even touched by Tim Burton. All the signs were there. You could almost, nearly see his footsteps wandering through the scenes. That is to say, you could see a strong influence of Edward Gorey permeating every car, every house, every shadow. And the Tim Burton humor, which is to say that most specific morbid humor of Gahan Wilson who, along with Charles Addams, is likely the only artistic peer that the other two men ever had (though I'm willing to entertain the idea of Gary Larson in that group).
The movie begins with a narrator seen only in silhouette. He identifies himself as Lemony Snicket (Jude Law: eXistenZ, THE TALENTED MR. RIPLEY, SKY CAPTAIN AND THE WORLD OF TOMORROW) and it is his regrettable task to tell us the following tale of woe that befalls three undeserving children known as Baudelaire. There is Emily Baudelaire (Emily Browning: GHOST SHIP), the inventor; her brother Klaus (Liam Aiken), The Reader; and their baby sister, Sunny (Kara and Shelby Hoffman), The Biter.

Dick Smith – Honorary Award
The haunting leer of a demonically possessed girl in "The Exorcist" (1973) is one of the more terrifying examples of the work of makeup artist Dick Smith (ALTERED STATES, SCANNERS, HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL [1999]). Widely considered the 20th century's maestro of movie makeup and affectionately called the Godfather of Makeup, Smith has influenced and inspired generations of artists. He has gladly shared his secrets with up-and-comers in the field as well as elevated the standards of the craft, both of which helped to establish makeup as a respected discipline of the cinematic arts.

BABYLON A.D.
While the credits roll we see a dismal place. It's Russia and people live in abject poverty. Crime isn't simply rampant, it's the cultural way of life. People sell guns on the street alongside people selling questionable foodstuffs. Everything can and is bartered for and nothing has value. A fight breaks out as one man starts beating another. Fellow gun marketers are about to step in and protect one of their own when they hear the attacker's accusation, "That gun you sold me didn't work! I was nearly killed!" The other gun sellers back down. No one wants a reputation for selling bad product. As the attacker gets his money back, he storms off as the other gun sellers crowd around, promising to sell him a really GOOD weapon. The attacker's name is Toorop (Vin Diesel: IRON GIANT, PITCH BLACK) and its just another day in his life as he stops by the various streetside grocers and picks up a dead rabbit and some onions for dinner. Toorop's neghborhood makes the worst American slum look like Martha's Vineyard or Beverly Hills.
His dinner and apartment are violently interrupted by an invitation. Local crime lord Gorsky wants to see him. Gorsky (Gérard Depardieu: THE MACHINE - wearing an even bigger nose appliance than the one he wore for Cyrano de Bergerac) rides around the ruined city in his tank battalion, his personal carrier fixed up limosine style. Gorsky is rich enough to be poor in some countries, and his mobile home is also an ironclad prison. Still, when you want to do business in this dump of a place, Gorsky is your man. Someone has paid Gorsky a lot of money to get a hired killer. And Gorsky is hiring Toorop.

Longtime Feo Fans know what a sucker I am for James Cameron. So yall can understand what I mean when I say that this is NOT a review I've been looking forward to writing. I've waited, and mulled over writing this, giving it way more consideration than was probably fair to other movies I've reviewed in the past. But like I've always done for the past ten years, I've got to give this my honest assessment and you either accept my point of view or you don't. Here goes...
AVATAR is in pretty much all ways, James Cameron's dream child. As with nearly everything he's directed, James created an entirely new way to tell the story. With AVATAR it's all about the 3D cgi. I've gone on at great lengths here at feoamante.com when trashing cgi in live action movies (not to be confused with any criticism of the 3D cgi found in animated movies). My reference point - the high bar - for great live action cgi is always TERMINATOR 2. From the T-1000 Terminator rising up out of the floor to the liquid, reflective chrome robot to the faux human passing through bars, TERMINATOR 2 is incredible and came from 1992 when they had to be creating it on, what, 286's for crying out loud? How in the hell was nobody after all this time able to significantly improve upon Cameron's extraordinary achievement?

THE DARK
Opening credits and we see ocean. Lots and lots of ocean. Then people start falling in.
Then we see a car driving along. A mother, Adéle (Maria Bello: THE MUMMY: TOMB OF THE DRAGON EMPEROR), has a younger, earphone wearing daughter, Sarah, and she is unhappy with Mom. Mention of the town of Cardiff puts us around about the Welsh part of England. The daughter tells her Mom that they're lost. Mom assures her daughter that they aren't. But its soon night time and they are both sleeping in the car by the side of the road. Mom has a spooky dream and wakes up.
The next morning they find their car stuck in mud and sheep and walk the rest of the way to estranged hubby's home on the cliff.
"That's so like your father," Adéle says derisively of her ex.
Once inside though, James the ex (Sean Bean: EQUILIBRIUM, SILENT HILL), reveals that he's turning an old slaughterhouse into a home, building his studio in the old abattoir. Okay, so clearly he's my kind of guy, but where is all of this heading?

THE CRAWLING EYE
First, for the sake of perspective, some history -
Jimmy Sangster (X: THE UNKNOWN, THE CURSE OF FRANKENSTEIN, DRACULA [1958], THE REVENGE OF FRANKENSTEIN, BLOOD OF THE VAMPIRE, INTENT TO KILL, JACK THE RIPPER, THE MAN WHO COULD CHEAT DEATH, THE MUMMY [1959], THE BRIDES OF DRACULA, THE TERROR OF THE TONGS, TASTE OF FEAR, PARANOIAC, MANIAC, NIGHTMARE, HYSTERIA, THE NANNY, DRACULA: PRINCE OF DARKNESS, THE ANNIVERSARY, CRESCENDO, THE HORROR OF FRANKENSTEIN, WHOEVER SLEW AUNTIE ROO?, A TASTE OF EVIL, FEAR IN THE NIGHT, THE LEGACY, PHOBIA) loves his Horror Thriller movies: that's why he wrote so many of them. And he was fully capable of writing a good screenplay. But he was also just as capable of writing a fast screenplay and getting his paycheck. Which is why his autobiography was titled, "Do You Want it Good or Tuesday?"
From the 1950s through to the 1990s, few British and European actors escaped his tales and certainly none of the most memorable ones. Dean Jagger, Michael Ripper, Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Janet Munro, Herbert Lom, Jackie Collins, Oliver Reed, Jannette Scott, Elke Sommer, Nigel Green, Ralph Bates, Roger Daltrey, Lionel Jeffries, the list is seemingly endless. His stories ensnared American actors like Bette Davis, Stephanie Powers, Shelley Winters, David Soul, Meg Foster, Alex Rocco, Susan Dey, Lynn Hamilton, Stuart Whitman, Gena Rowlands, Richard Baseheart, George Peppard, Dennis Weaver, Darren McGavin, Raymond Burr, William Conrad, Robert Urich, Lynda Carter, Kim Catrall, Katherine Ross, Sam Elliot, Tom Selleck, Morgan Fairchild, Ted Danson, Gary Graham, Elliot Gould, Bill Cosby, Jerry Reed, even William Shatner and Mr. T! Jimmy Sangster's scripts employed more actors and filmmakers than even the stories of Stephen King! And when he wasn't writing, which was nearly every day, he was directing. And when he wasn't directing, he was producing! In his heyday, Jimmy was so prolific it's beyond belief! Hell! He even wrote a documentary called BEYOND BELIEF!

CAST A DEADLY SPELL
You don't have to be a horror/mystery fan to like oddball movies, but if you ARE a horror/mystery fan and you like oddball movies, CAST A DEADLY SPELL may be right up your darkened alley.
Imagine an alternative Universe earth: An alternate history if you will, where one of those, oh let's say, terrible magic spells - the kind that only come along once every millennium, gets released by a nefarious character for unsavory purposes.
Let's say something like that happened.
Lots of horror books paint such a scenario. The hero or anti-hero rushes up just in the nick of time to stop the forces of evil, or magic, or evil magic (after he/she has got in touch with their own humanity first, of course) just as the demon is about to establish their dominion on earth.
In CAST A DEADLY SPELL, the hero/heroine was possibly in the john at the time and the forces just went ahead and got released, at least in Los Angeles, California in the 1940s.
This movie has nothing to do with any adventure that may have come before. This is all about what came after - way, way after society has adapted itself to the change and life goes on as usual, even if a bit customized.

THE CAR
THE CAR is one of those movies that really wowed me as a kid. When I look at it
now, I'm not so wowed. That's not to say that THE CAR is a bad movie, actually it is above bad: but the years have gone by and the bar has been raised. For those in Hollywood looking for re-make fodder, THE CAR would
be excellent material. Not only is it a good old fashioned thriller, but its overtones of the Occult and Horror make it a perfect vehicle (HA! Vehicle! Get it? HA!) for today's resurge of Horror movie redux - es.
This movie smells like a Made-For-TV flick that was a bit too strong for the
Networks of that time. Now days, its utter lack of carnage, mild adult
themes, and over-all cornball acting makes even a PG rating seem a bit
strong and it certainly couldn't compete with SF/Horror TV shows like
The X-Files. So what Does this movie have going for it?
Well there's this car, see? It looks REALLY BITCHIN'! That's because
it was designed by California Car Customizer George Barris (The BATMOBILE [TV & Movies], The MUNSTER COACH [TV], The GREEN HORNET's car [TV], K.I.T.T. from NIGHTRIDER [TV], JURASSIC PARK's Ford Explorers) who is one of only two people I can think of that were Custom Car heroes of my childhood.
