sCare Foundation presents the 1st Annual Halloween Launch Benefit
Sure to be the biggest Halloween bash of 2011, the sCare Foundation Halloween Launch Benefit will also be the night's most fearsome fundraiser. The newly-founded sCare Foundation, headed by Malek Akkad, producer of the legendary Halloween film franchise, is hosting their inaugural event on Sunday, October 30th to benefit the CHAMPION Fund at Children's Hospital Los Angeles and support the programs of the Hollywood Homeless Youth Project (HHYP). At the event, the foundation will give its first-ever Humanitarian Award to two-time Golden Globe® winner Jamie Lee Curtis (the original HALLOWEEN, THE FOG). The benefit will be held at The Conga Room @ L.A. Live, and will be a star-studded night of live music and entertainment, along with a silent auction where fans can bid on a wide variety of items – all for a great cause!
sCare Foundation is a non-profit organization whose goal is to alleviate the hardships of poverty and homelessness facing North American youth.

SINGULARITY
The story revolves around the discovery of an organism, frozen in the Arctic Ice, that shatters Man's every notion of evolution, and replaces it with a terrifying reality - that Man may no longer be the soul source of intelligent life on Earth. And in our lust for power, we may have just given birth to our own extinction.
This is the awesome premise on which Shian Storm's award-winning short "Singularity" is based. So why isn't this apocalyptic blockbuster already on its way to a cineplex near you? Writer/Director Shian Storm explains, "The feature I wrote was way beyond anything we could afford to shoot, so I had to scale things back. And instead of shooting a full-on sci-fi, action, thriller, I focused more on the horror aspects of the story, and adapted a section of the script into something that could play out in a garage." And that scaled-down version starring Robert Joy (THE AMITYVILLE HORROR 3D, RESURRECTION, LAND OF THE DEAD, THE HILLS HAVE EYES [2006], ALIENS VS PREDATOR: REQUIEM) has been a huge hit with horror audiences. Declared "An AMAZING achievement," by Film Radar, "...ʼSingularityʼ has the feel and polish of a major feature film!"
High praise for a film made for less than most productions spend on a single meal. "Our biggest challenge might have been making everything look believable for next to nothing using a consumer grade camera," Storm says. And to do that, the production was forced to employ the kind of tactics that have made the Horror genre a hotbed of film innovation for the past 40 years. "We used stick-on Halloween make-up, dressed it up with latex, painted it up, and, in the end, with the blood, the latex, and the appliances, I think we only spent around $200, and it just looks fantastic. Add in everything Robert brings to the table, and you end up with something very special."
As a result of their ingenuity combined with Joy's performance this low budget juggernaut snagged 10 nominations from the Maverick Movie folks in late 2010 including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Actor (Joy) and scored Jacob Hair (2001 MANIACS) and Malaki Keller the award for Best Make-up FX. |

THE CROW
Fourteen years ago in 1994, when audiences entered the theaters to get their seats and wait for the movie, they probably felt the way a number of people felt like when they went to see THE DARK KNIGHT in 2008. As an actor, Brandon Lee was nowhere near as popular as Heath Ledger, and that was probably the point to a lot of people. Heath was able to show his promise and potential. Heath left behind a body of meaningful work. By 1992, while Brandon Lee was shooting THE CROW, he'd been in only a handful of movies and they were all low budget actioneers, made primarily for the late night Cinemax (before Cinemax became Skinamax) or SciFi channel crowd. He hadn't made his mark yet. Being that he was the son of Bruce Lee, a popular martial arts actor who died virtually on the very cusp of fame, fans just knew that Brandon was going to bust out with something that would wow theater go'ers for generations.

PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: On Stranger Tides
Starting with HARRY POTTER, the 2000s began the Sprawling Epic aka The Grand Saga. THE LORD OF THE RINGS swiftly followed Harry a month later, tons of money followed both, and the new form was born. When a single movie, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL, made a fortune in 2003, Disney quickly leapt onto the idea that their property could become another sprawling epic. No question, the first Pirates had plenty of sprawl!
But then the whole thing wrapped up with a whimper with AT WORLD'S END. I enjoyed World's End when I first saw it, but it doesn't hold up with repeated viewings. Clearly it was time to keep the saga going and in a new direction.

ZOMBIE
Released just a few months after George Romero's zombie classic, DAWN
OF THE DEAD, Lucio Fulci's (THE GATES OF HELL, THE BEYOND, HOUSE BY THE CEMETERY) ZOMBIE is little more than an attempt to cash in on the success of a much better
film. Despite this, it still manages to be extremely entertaining, with
its over the top gore and camp exploitational feel making it well worth
the price of a rental.
The film opens with the Coast Guard intercepting what appears to be an empty sailboat
in New York harbor. Ah, but it only appears to be empty.

THE HOUSE BY THE CEMETERY
Without question, there is a lot of "bad to be had" in a Lucio Fulci movie.
Its
not just the wooden acting of the stars (who Lucio worked with again and again) and its not even his poor direction - in how he wanted his actors to behave.
There are also the bad to the point
of being funny quick cuts. When a character is confronted with the potential
of being caught in a lie, they not only freeze in their tracks until it's
obvious that they are guilty as sin, Fulci would further exacerbate the
issue by cutting to extreme close-ups of the actor's eyes bouncing left
to right in their sockets. Then he would cut to the person seeing this
happen, then back to the guilty party, then back again to the person witnessing
this, then finally - mercifully, the guilty character would say something
like,
"Why no, honey, that woman and I have never met." And the torture would stop.
