YE DUG IT
R! In the general scheme o' things, yer still digging CONTAGION, which floats to #2 this week with only a 35.4% drop in ticket sales.
Even after 7 weekends, ye still be digging RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES, which treads from #6 to #9, largely in the face o' four new movies opening this weekend. RISE lost only 32.5% of its box office from last week. R!
YE BURIED IT
Avast ye Lathamlubbers! Tis ain't be treasure yer buryin'!
With a mark at #5, ye buried the STRAW DOGS remake. What was fresh n' fascinating in the capable hands o' Sam PeckinPAH, here be stale expectation o' here-we-go-again "homicidal rednecks" flick in the claws o' Writer, Director, and Producer Rod Lurie.
Vicious rednecks? Vicious Southern Rednecks? Tis moldy cheese has more hair than me, says I!
The thing that nobody at Screen Gems seems tah notice is, well, we've already had tons o' homicidal rednecks flicks with DELIVERANCE, THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE (and sequels, remakes, and rip-offs), I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE (with remakes and rip-offs), THE HILLS HAVE EYES (with sequels and remakes and rip-offs), HOUSE OF 1000 CORPSES (with sequel), WRONG TURN (with sequel and rip-offs), Rob Zombie's HALLOWEEN remake and sequel, and far, FAR more: possibly more than zombie flicks! Sure'n that don't even cover all the Redneck books n' crossovers like REDNECKS WHO SHOOT ZOMBIES, ON THE NEXT GERALDO. Not only did ye Screen Gems scalliwags have a tepid trailer, but ye scurvy dogs could not even offer a different movie poster from the original? Shiver me timbers!
Sure'n Ron Lurie has never directed anything but doubloon flushing flicks his entire career - the last 12 years (even when he had a Nowhere-to-go-but-up budget of $800k!). And the old salt seems content to spend his time making movies very similar to a hit that someone else already made the same year R just the year before. This time he went retread with a worn old tread. So original he ain't, but Cthulhu love him, He Keeps At It!
Ye can't seem to bury SHARK NIGHT 3D fast enough, as, in its third weekend, it sinks from #7 to #11. Still, its attraction to the schlock loving Creature Feature crowd kept its mealy box office drop to only 46.6% from last week.
That's great news compared to the bilge sucking APOLLO 13 which, in the same number o' weeks, hit water and dropped like a stone, in a fall that took it from last week's #8 to this week's #17. Dimension Film's ace-in-the hole is that APOLLO 18 only cost $5 million and has already accumulated - or accreted - $23 million as it sinks beneath the waves.
Writer and Producer, Guillermo Del Toro's DON'T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK also plops beneath the top 12 this week,
sinking into Davey's grip from #12 to #18 after only three weeks.

From DJ Perry
SOULEATER - ORIGINS OF THE PLAGUE (The 8th Plague prequel)
A young woman and her friends search for a missing sister at an abandoned prison only to find insanity and death remain. That pretty much sums up the sleeper hit "The 8thPlague" released by Anthem DVD followed by a Special Edition release by Celebrity Video. The film attracted a following with its "eye popping" gore effects, moody camerawork and one axe swinging guard named Mason played by indie-favorite DJ Perry. His recent upcoming horror releases include "Renovation," "Darkest Night," and "Locked in a Room".
It was formally announced that Collective Development Inc. has acquired the rights to produce a prequel to "The 8th Plague" that will tell the story of just what happened at that prison before it turned into a hell-on-earth haven. Audiences of the first film easily recognized that several of the characters knew a lot more about what had happened at the prison that was revealed. DJ Perry while exploring his back-story for "The 8th Plague" developed the prequel story and script.
The prequel entitled "Soul Eater" will have DJ reprising his role of Mason, a prison guard recently beat out of an open deputy job by his friend Buck, played by returning "The 8th Plague" actor Terry Jernigan. The cult leader formerly played by Indian actor Nitsin Adsul will be recast as he focuses on his directing career. Joining the cast will be Hollywood scarlet Nadia Dawn, playing a mysterious and sexy lawyer working in defense of the murderous Kadulva. She has worked with the likes of Nick Cannon, Ozzy Osbourne and P-Diddy. She is the upcoming host of "Supermodel Showdown Costa Rica" that will premiere early 2012 on Telemundo.
The film is currently looking at locations and directors as well as being in talks with various interested distributors.

BLU-RAY TUESDAY
BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER,
After writing, what are considered by many to be the best episodes of the television comedy, Roseanne, Joss Whedon got the greenlight for his script, BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER. The story of a meaningless blonde airhead who is redeemed by her birthright. Actually in real life, birthrights, which often come in the form of an inheritance, are usually the start of a downfall, but anyway.
Continued at Feo Amante/ Movies/ Buffy.
AND
THE FRIGHTENERS
This movie stars Michael J. Fox in one of his best, yet least appreciated roles.
Michael J. Fox is, in my opinion, an outstanding actor. Though talented
and learned at the same time, his many goofball movies (CLASS OF 1984, TEEN WOLF, MARS ATTACKS!) have put him in a class in most
people's minds with Jim Varney rather than, say Harrison Ford. Too damn
bad, but despite critical raves for his more serious roles, Fox will be
permanently entrenched in Comedy. Not a bad thing if the comedy is good.
For THE FRIGHTENERS the comedy is quite good though the horror is often overwhelmed instead
of heightened by the Special Effects.

PLUS
THE HILLS HAVE EYES (2006)
Some movies reviews - of those which aren't of remakes in particular - can jump right into the review and explore. But this isn't a remake of just any movie.
In 1977, while America and the world were going gaga over a film called Star Wars, some fans, having enough of the SciFi fantasy and looking for chills, got more than they bargained for with Wes Craven's second masterpiece, THE HILLS HAVE EYES. With this film, Wes solidified his name in association with brutal, unrelenting horror; having already shocked audiences with his 1972 movie, THE LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT.
Wes' original vision is nearly 30 years old and someone felt it was time for an update.

ALSO
MANHUNTERis based on the Thomas Harris (THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, HANNIBAL) novel RED DRAGON. It was Directed and written for the screen by Michael Mann (THE KEEP), best known as being the creator of the TV series Miami Vice. It's the story of the burnt out FBI serial killer hunter who captured Hannibal Lector. Special Agent Will
Graham (William L. Petersen: FEAR, THE SKULLS) was very good at catching these deviants because he was able to make himself think like them and understand their fantasies. After he caught Lector he wasn't able to stop thinking like him and ended up in a mental ward. He got better, but immediately retired from the FBI. The movie begins with his old boss, Jack Crawford (Dennis Farina: SAVING PRIVATE RYAN), asking him to come back to catch a new serial killer. This one enters homes late at night and slaughters whole families, then arranges the corpses into an audience and replaces their eyes with mirrors, so he can see them seeing him.
Continued at Feo Amante/ Movies/ Manhunter.
WASSMOR
CHILD'S PLAY
The plot of this flick is fairly simple: when a serial killer is finally caught,
he is wounded and flees into a toy store. As he's dying, he uses a voodoo
spell to place his soul inside the body of a child-sized doll. Now reanimated,
he seeks revenge on the cop that caught him and his ex-partner, who abandoned him when he was caught.
Written by Don Mancini (all four CHILD'S PLAY films) and directed by Tom Holland (FRIGHT NIGHT, THINNER), the film isn't necessarily terrible. Realistically, it's pretty tough to mess up a purely revenge-driven
plot. Provided for some suspension of disbelief (a plastic doll that is somehow stronger than the people it's attacking)
and some general gaps in logic (at a few points, the doll travels alone through the city), it almost makes a good
horror film.
Continued at Feo Amante/ Movies/ Child's Play.
FINALLY
RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD
Some familiarity with NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD will help
an audience appreciate what director / screenwriter Dan O' Bannon
(Screenwriter of ALIEN, LIFEFORCE, BLEEDERS, SCREAMERS) did here, but I think
only the die-hard fans will really love it.
The date is July 3, 1984. The setting is Louisville, Kentucky at the Uneeda Medical
Supply Company, located across the street from the Resurrection Funeral
Home and Cemetery. Frank (James Karen: POLTERGIEST, RETURN OF THE
LIVING DEAD PART II, INVADERS FROM MARS, APT
PUPIL) is training a new employee, teenage Freddy (Thom Mathews, FRIDAY THE 13TH PART IV, RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD PART II, NEMESIS) in the art of packing skeletons for universities and in the knowledge
of split dogs for veterinarians.

YOU DUG IT
In a very slow past four weeks that saw the #1 spot won by a movie repeatedly making less than $20 million, you seem to be digging CONTAGION, which won the top spot this weekend eking out less than $21 million. This all star cast feature will need to bump it up to reach its $120 million break-even mark. Maybe word of mouth will improve CONTAGION's B.O. by next weekend.
Even after six weekends at the box office, you are still digging RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES, which slowly drips from #5 to #6 this week. To give you an idea of the low audience turn out this summer, even after six weeks, RISE still hasn't reached its U.S. Box Office break-even mark.
HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS
says goobye to the Top 12, moving from #12 to #16 after 8 weeks.
YOU BURIED IT
In its first week, second weekend, SHARK NIGHT 3D drops from #4 to #7 for a grand total of $14 million. Considering it's already low budget and that it needs a $25 million break-even, you aren't digging schlock this year.
Speaking of schlock, you are deeply burying APOLLO 18, which started higher than SHARK NIGHT 3D and has now free fallen below it, from #3 to #8.
DON'T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK is rapidly dropping off the Top 12. In its second week, third weekend, it falls from #8 to #11.
