Bunraku, Japanese for puppet theater, is now a movie by Writer and Director Guy Moshe, who only has one short film and one minor feature to his name. Guy takes the bold step of having an all-star cast (including Josh Harnett from SIN CITY) star in his daring and highly stylized film, BUNRAKU. The sets are made to look like Japanese puppet theater, blending live actions, and real sets with computer animation. Will Bunraku's Puppet-style theatrical cinema work for audiences? The trailer isn't impressing me. What about you?

HELLRAISER is a movie that goes long on creativity and ideas but falls far short on execution. This is typical of Clive Barker movies whether we are talking about his best (CANDYMAN, NIGHTBREED) or his worst (RAWHEAD REX, LORD OF ILLUSIONS).

The perfect way for me to watch HELLBOUND: Hellraiser II, is to watch HELLRAISER first, then the sequel. These two movies really don't stand alone well, but they complete each other quite well.

The biggest problem with HELLRAISER was its direction and loose script. Better editing would have been a big help too. When it ended there were far too many story threads still hanging loose.

It's not often that a movie comes along and sparks a whole new outlook on its genre, but SCREAM did just that. Several hip teenage slasher flicks surfed the wake of its success, putting a Generation X stamp on the characters and hiring teenage prime time drama icons to portray them.

And it's ironic, because SCREAM, written by Kevin Williamson Smith (I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER, THE FACULTY), is essentially a parody of slasher flicks. During the course of the movie, the characters lambast "traditional" horror films such as FRIDAY THE 13TH or HALLOWEEN, yet the plot of SCREAM itself follows the formula almost exactly, essentially showing us exactly what the characters were talking about.

A clutch of folks come out of a church in the town of Gatlin. Today's sermon involves corn and a drought. The latter of which is never good news to farmers of the former. A child's voice tells us that he is coming out of church, and so he is. He is the only child in church, he is. He and his dad go to the local grill where the child tells us that his Dad is real worried over the health of his sister Sarah (Anne Marie McEvoy) and his Mom and wants to call them before he does anything else. Then Pop says,

"I'm going to call your Mom and sister first."

E-Freakin' gad! The Merry Mishaps can't come soon enough to THIS town.
