Horror, Thriller, Mystery, and Suspense fans, rejoice!
If there is one comic book title out there of continuous quality with stories and art that I just love, it has to be GRAPHIC CLASSICS.
We've covered Graphic Classics in the past via reviewer Chris Gage (THE BREED [2001]).
Since the dawn of the new millenia, Publisher Tom Pomplun has meticulously put these great comics out, with works from Mary Wollenstonecraft Shelly, Edgar Allen Poe, Bram Stoker, H.P. Lovecraft, Arthur Conan Doyle, and so many others. With modern day adaptations by Joe R. Landsdale, Don Marquez, Gahan Wilson, and artwork by Rick Geary, Richard Corben, Spain Rodriguez, Gerry Alanguilan, and so many more enrich the tales within.

Shriekfest, the Los Angeles Horror/SciFi Film Festival continues its tradition as Los Angeles' Premier horror film event, presenting an exciting program of films each fall with beautiful Los Angeles as its backdrop. Now, in it's 13th year, Shriekfest takes place at the legendary Raleigh Studios, which is the largest independent studio operator in the country. We offer filmmakers and film fans alike an ideal setting in a world-famous city, SHRIEKFEST draws in over 5,000 attendees each year. Both established and emerging filmmakers gain media exposure, connect with the region's diverse audiences, and participate in an acclaimed event attended by industry professionals as well as horror and scifi fans. Over the past twelve years, Shriekfest has welcomed numerous indie icons into its family.
We are looking for new and original films and screenplays. We are accepting films/screenplays in six categories: narrative feature, narrative short, narrative super short, feature screenplay, short screenplay, and original song.
We will be awarding prizes to the winning filmmaker in each category.
Last year's festival was a great success. We had our biggest audience yet, with a 10% increase over the previous year and more than 35 filmmakers in attendance.

THE HOBBIT Nearly Missed Its Special-Effects Oscar Nomination

Today Variety has revealed that The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey nearly didn't get nominated for an Oscar in the special-effects category. As the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences keeps pushing the nominating process to earlier dates, films released late in the year sometimes can't be seen by those in charge of voting on which ones will make the final cut to compete for the Oscars.

What is Steam Wars? Imagine Star Wars in the age of Victorian era Steam Punk. When you click the link you will be led to a very cool little short proof-of-concept animated movie.
This originally came out back in 2008, but Larry Blamire's STEAM WARS (a story title shared by many creative people who apparently have nothing to do with each other. Perhaps it's an idea whose time has come.), is getting up another head of steam, so to speak.

2009: LOST MEMORIES
Alternate history does not mean politically correct history, where the only bad guys were Evil White Men. No, alternate history (a sub-genre of science fiction) is about different versions of history. The South winning the Civil War (a very near thing, by the way) is one of the most common. Personally I prefer the obscure little twists that could lead to a very different 21st century (see the Draka novels by S.M. Stirling). But an alternate outcome to the civil war is a very American item to wonder about. Obviously people in other cultures would wonder what the world would be like if some pivotal event in their history came out different.
2009: LOST MEMORIES is a Korean film directed by Si-myung Lee (VAMPIRE COP RICKY) and written by Si-myung Lee and Sang-hak Lee. The story begins with a stylishly shot semi-documentary about the attempted assassination of a prominent Japanese politician named Ito Hirubumi in Korea in 1909. "Attempted" being the key word because in actual history the attempt was successful. But in this alternate universe a soldier steps from the crowd and plugs the assassin as he rushes Hirubumi at a train station.

QUICK BITES
Evil Dead Reboot Gets The Ax
It's finished, out of post, and the MPAA just gave Sam Raimi and Fede Alvarez' EVIL DEAD movie an NC-17 rating. Even people who are 17 can't see it.
Actually though, that will just make the over 17 crowd want to see it all the more, right? Tremendous opening weekend for an NC-17 will only work for a Horror film, right?
If that Horror film was a low budget independent, you bet! But this is a low budget big studio picture this time around (Sony Pictures). Which means that Sony is putting THE EVIL DEAD under the ax to give it a wholesome R rating in order to get it onto the maximum number of screens (major theater chains are very skittish about NC-17 movies, even if they come from San Raimi).
You'll likely still be able to buy the NC-17 or UNRATED (how the original EVIL DEAD hit the theaters) on DVD and BLU-RAY. Wholesome family stores like WalMart and BestBuy will be happy to sell you the Director's Cut!
You just won't be able to see original version of THE EVIL DEAD [2013] in any major theater chains: making the Art House cinemas look better all the time. Hopefully Sony will, at the very, very, least, release an UNRATED version to Art House theaters. We'll see.

Omaha director's horror movie to get Aksarben screenings

Omahan Tom Elkins is pumped. You can hear it over the phone all the way from Santa Monica, Calif.
He has a good reason. His directing debut, "The Haunting in Connecticut 2: Ghosts of Georgia," will screen in his hometown this weekend at Omaha's Aksarben Cinema.

Fire Near Scene of 2 Horror Movies May Be Arson

An old barn burned Monday on a Lehigh County property where 2 horror movies were filmed.
North Whitehall Fire Marshal Don Jacobs said a Monday morning fire in an abandoned barn at 4767 Cobbler Road is considered "suspicious." The adjoining slaughterhouse, which was the setting for two indie horror movies, was not damaged.

THE PROPHECY 3: THE ASCENT
If sequels go on long enough, eventually they peter out. After the lead actors have left, the story creator is gone, the director who told the story has moved onto greener pastures, the Producer(s) is left pretending that they were the reason for the success in the first place. The producers in charge of the franchise, who usually had no idea what folks saw in the movie series in the first place, just keep adding numbers to the title. From time to time they may add a ridiculous word like "The Revenge", "The Ascension", or "The Rise Of". They try to hold onto the lead actor as long as possible, as if the popularity was based entirely upon them (despite all historical evidence to the contrary), and disregard the story (writer) and storyteller (director).
Some times a franchise crashes and burns with the very first sequel, like THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT 2, MEN IN BLACK II or THE MATRIX: RELOADED. Other times they crash immediately after the first sequel, like HELLRAISER 3 or ALIEN 3. But they always tank as a direct result of the producer(s) who own the franchise turning their gold into excrement.
There are so very few exceptions to this rule, that you can count them on one hand, and you may have spare fingers left over.

THE LAST EXORCISM III!
While feoamante. com has always kinda been the red-headed, bastard, adopted child of Horror Thriller sites, I'm not bitter.
While Feo Amante's Horror Thriller usually gets press releases touting some new movie weeks or even months AFTER it's release (or longer), and long after everyone else got the news, I'm certainly not bitter.
In fact, I often get down on my god damn knees and thank the Flying Spaghetti Noodle Monster that I'm not BITTER!
But I'm especially happy today, because Feo Amante's Horror Thriller was given first peek at the all new THE LAST EXORCISM III movie poster!*
See, my review of the first THE LAST EXORCISM was a little less than effusive. What can I say? It's how I felt after watching the damn thing (Damn! Thing! Ha! Cuz it's a movie about...)
