PASSING INTO THE REAL OUTER LIMITS
Locus Magazine is reporting that John Mantley (MY BLOOD RUNS COLD) has died of Alzheimer's disease.
The 82-year-old former producer of THE WILD, WILD, WEST TV series also wrote for the S.F. / Thriller show THE OUTER LIMITS and potboilers like The Untouchables. John's first novel, THE 27TH DAY (SF/Thriller) was later made into the 1957 movie.

FANBOY'S WRITING ON NBC TV FRIDAY NIGHT!
The moment is nigh! This Friday night, January 31st, at 10pm, your local NBC station will air an episode of LAW & ORDER: SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT written by your humble servant, the Fanboy of Fear, Christos N. Gage (THE BREED, TEENAGE CAVEMAN) - with my wife Ruth, natch. I'll be your best friend (that's right, every single one of you) if you watch it. Here's a comics related in-joke for you: see if you can spot where I used the name of Paul Howley, owner of award-winning comic book store That's Entertainment in Worcester, Mass.! Thanks for your support!

QUEER FEAR DON'T SKEER QUEERS
Editor Michael Rowe's first QUEER FEAR anthology garnered critical raves for its frightening yet respectful use of the subject matter, which was devoted to protagonists and antagonists, victims and monsters, who were Homosexual, Bisexual, and Transgendered. Now QUEER FEAR II is out and really getting raves.

HORROR / THRILLER FLEDGLINGS GET THE BAT BOY
Chris Nolan, director of the mysterious and creepy MEMENTO, has got the inked paper from Warner Bros. naming him as the next director in the dead Batman movie franchise. Warner Bros. has taken lots of risks with their Dark Knight ever since hiring Tim Burton to direct the first one and having Michael Keaton (whose career was in a dumpster at the time) sign on as the Caped Crusader.

CATCH!: SOME FREE GOODIES!
Yeah, I thought that would attract your penny-pinching attention! But it's true: It's that time of year when publishers, in an effort to win awards for their books and writers, are offering entire novels for free. The catch? You have to be a member of an organization that actually votes on these awards.

Here is a list of publishers and writers who are giving out their complete stories and/or novels for free on the net - to members of specific organizations. You may have to pay to become a member of these organizations, but then you get free goodies!

JOHNNY DEPP AND HIS FIRST KING ROLE
Okay, if you are a Horror / Thriller fan then you are pretty much a Depp fan. Of his almost 30 theatrical movies, 10 of them fall into the categories of Horror, Thriller, or Dark Fantasy. From his movie debut in A NIGHTMARE ON ELMSTREET to his role as Horror movie director incompetent, ED WOOD, to his presence in three Horror / Thriller movies all released in 1999 (THE NINTH GATE, THE ASTRONAUT'S WIFE, SLEEPY HOLLOW) which marked both the resurge in Horror movies and the launch of this website.

Pelan has to choose the one BEST published story representing each year: 1900-2000. Authors will be limited to one story, too. Volume One will find the best stories for the even-numbered years, while Volume Two will cover the odd-numbered years. Target date for is later this year.

BRAUNBECK AND THE WOLVES OF THE MIDWEST
FeoNote: I am a mercenary mother as I'm sure you're aware. So it is damn rare that I allow any news in here that smacks more of advertising than the actual Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How of a press release. But this latest news from Lone Wolf Publishing has to be some kind of record, man. This new disc is like the bonus DVD extras of audio! Check out the following from Brian A. Hopkins.

ANOTHER FICTION EDITOR LEAVES GOTHIC.NET
Rumors abound but you can trust your intrepid reporter - (me, you idiot!) - to sort out the wheat from the chaff! Was it even a month after Ohioan, Kealan Patrick Burke, (he of the suspiciously Irish-sounding name) snatched the post of Fiction Editor at Gothic.net away from the hulking continent that is Seth Lindberg, that he began whining that he may not be "Gothic" enough for Gothic.net?

LISTEN UP YOU PRIMITIVE SCREWHEADS!
The last few "Collector's Editions" of Sam Raimi's ARMY OF DARKNESS have been a mixed blessing. Two of the DVD releases, a Collector's Edition and a Collector's Edition Director's Cut Bootleg Edition (which were pretty much the same thing but with different covers) both had "The original Director's Ending" which further goes to show how a director can louse up their own story (not that Scott, Speilberg, or Lucas is reading this but...).

SETTIN' A SPELL WITH CARROLL AND DATLOW
"What it always boils down to, you write about what bites you." So says novelist Jonathan Carroll in a new interview published by Rain Taxi, an online publication out of Minneapolis, MN. Novelist Carroll and his editor, Ellen Datlow, obviously shared some time between panels at last fall's World Fantasy Convention in Minneapolis to visit with interviewers Alan DeNiro and Kelly Everding, and it was time well-spent. PROPS FOR GARRETT

The Restless Dead
THE RESTLESS DEAD
by HUGH B. CAVE

"Give me my propers / when I get home."
Otis Redding sung it in 1965 and it became Aretha Franklin's anthem in 1967. As in a little proper respect. Back in 2001, Garrett Peck wrote a review of Horror writer Hugh B. Cave's THE EVIL RETURNS. Hugh's latest novel, THE RESTLESS DEAD (Leisure Horror), just hit the bookstores (though Borders customers will have to wait another week in most areas - I don't know why).

On the very first page there is a blurb from this site regarding ol' Hugh. However, unlike blurb IDs from places like HellNotes and Masters Of Terror, the blurb ID for feoamante.com is listed as "Feo Amante" and many people have come to associate the name of the site with me (it's my nickname). So for the sake of clarity, I, Feo Amante, didn't write it. Is this a big deal? Not at all. This is just a way another way to promote my reviewers and, in this case, give Garrett Peck his Proper Respect!

Read Garrett's review of Hugh B. Cave's THE EVIL RETURNS.
