Aykroyd eyes making 'Ghostbusters' prequel - for 'as little as we can spend'
By Cassandra Szlarski
TORONTO — The next incarnation of "Ghostbusters" will spawn another series of revivals if Dan Aykroyd gets his way.

In addition to the upcoming Jason Reitman-penned sequel, Aykroyd says he's handed Reitman a script for a 1960s-era prequel, which would look at the teenage years of parapsychologists Peter Venkman, Egon Spengler and Ray Stantz, played by Aykroyd.

Hiding female cast, 'Ghostbusters' courts male moviegoers
By Jake Coyle
NEW YORK (AP) — To sell "Ghostbusters," who are you going to call? In the film's initial nationwide TV spots, not its female stars.

Sony Pictures trotted out commercials Thursday night that promoted the female-led reboot not with cast members Melissa McCarthy or Kristen Wiig, but basketball stars Kobe Bryant and Carmelo Anthony. The ads ran on ABC during game one of the NBA Finals, which is watched by a largely male audience.

Targeting different demographics through varied marketing strategies is commonplace for Hollywood films. Rarer are ads that replace a movie's actual cast wholesale.

Ghostbusters 2016

FeoNote: Man! Sony is wholly incapable of getting it!

Once you get past the "I Hate Remakes" crowd, the next largest group isn't hating Ghostbusters 2016 because of Sony's greenlit gimmick of switching the guys for gals as the main characters (to cover their former Chairperson, Amy Pascal's wiki-leaked butt regarding her anti-woman, sexist emails). Those trolls were barely a simmer.

The whole hub bub went bust when Sony released not one, but three awful trailers in a row that left even former supporters tweeting, WTF?

MAY 20, 2016

SONY GHOSTBUSTERS 2016: STRIKE 2, BALL 1, HIT!
Well, it took a lot of money and four separate public attempts (and I suspect a trailer editor who had nothing to do with the first three), but at last, Sony has a compelling trailer!

So now the big question is, is GHOSTBUSTERS 2016 as funny as the latest trailer or as awful as the three previous trailers?

MAY 18, 2016

SONY GHOSTBUSTERS 2016: STRIKE 2, BALL 1
As a total, it's still not funny, but at least it isn't on the nose *facepalm* cloy and dumb like the first two.

Yeah, I know that isn't high praise, but just watch it.

This is Sony's 3rd "Official" swing at the ball, though they are claiming it is only the 2nd time.

As if to underline just how much the new producers, director, and writer doesn't get it, they even brought back the Sta-Puft Marshmallow man. I don't know if GHOSTBUSTERS 2016 is supposed to be a remake, reboot, or sequel (and at this point I have the feeling the folks making the 2016 Ghostbusters don't know either), but whatever it is they are trying to achieve, it ain't working.

Funniest line goes to Patty at the concert.

UPDATE: THE UNBELIEVABLE BEVAN!

Sony's Second Mediocre and Official GHOSTBUSTERS Trailer

Well... it's a marginal improvement over the March 3rd first one, which was a disaster.

Sony Pictures latest trailer, released today. This mediocre attempt is only marginally better than their first trailer, released on March 3.

So far I've watched at least two different fans take what Sony offered and make good to outstanding trailers. By virtue of editing the material that Sony presented.

Amateurs on home computers making better movie trailers than the mega-budget, mega studio with its state-of-the-art equipment?

WTF, Sony? Get it together already!

GHOSTBUSTERS First Official Trailer

A lot of recycled, well-worn, ancient hand-crafted jokes from the 1990s and early 2000s infuse this new GHOSTBUSTERS trailer. I don't know why Melissa McCarthy's GoTo team of writer Katie Dippold and Producer Paul Feig (ZOMBIE HIGH) did that, but it seems we're stuck with it.
"Ow! That's gonna leave a mark."

Ha. Ha. Still hilarious after 20 years. Whatever happened to Freakazoid!, anyway?

Yeah, the trailer isn't wowing me, but I'm cranky about remakes.* Especially unnecessary remakes that want to look all shiny and new but in characters, dialog, and story prefer the unthreatening, traditional approach. From the tediously standard, rapid-fire techno SKITTA SKITTA SKITTA sound effect of the first puke scene - to let you know the gang are in over their heads; to the tediously standard TRANSFORMERS' Drop-The-Bass sound effect of BWWOOOOOM... to let you know that life for our heroes just took a downturn. It's all so cut & paste.

That includes the awkward, On The Nose dialog,

"We've dedicated our whole lives to studying the paranormal!"

"Holtzman, you're a brilliant engineer!"

"Erin, no one's better at quantum physics than you."

BWWOOOOOM...

As with the first GHOSTBUSTERS, only white people are scientists. That's not how the original writers Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis wanted it^, but that's how 1980s Columbia Pictures demanded it.
"A... B-Buh-Black? As a scientist? Come, come now, how ridiculous is that? No, we'll make him an unemployed black man who will do anything to get a job. In fact, let's make a joke of it!"

Okay, sure. And in 1984 you could get away with that because there were no media famous black scientists. You could call it relevant to the era.

So here we are over 30 years later and?
"You guys are really smart about this science stuff, but I know New York."
Holy crap!

Yes, the lone black person of the group isn't a "really smart" scientist, but a stereotypical sassy ... oh hell, let's cut to the chase: Remember Jamie Foxx's Dean 'MF' Jones in Horrible Bosses? Remember how the joke was on the white folk's bigoted presumption of who and what a black man is?

That's actor Leslie Jones' character of Patty Tolan with one major difference. According to this trailer: Patty actually IS the embodiment of the white folk's bigoted presumption of who and what a black person is.

In the age of mega media star scientist, Neil deGrasse Tyson, Sony will not abide a main character who is both black AND "really smart about this science stuff" ?

Oh, dare I embrace the diversity of Sony Picture's 20th Century world view?

Team Sony have gone out of their way to preen on about this movie displaying their "tolerance and diversity" for no other reason but that they replaced male characters with female ones. That's it. That's their gimmicky veneer. It's all they've done or want to do, and if you have a problem with this remake, then you are sexist.

Attacking their potential audience is actually Sony's marketing strategy and it's glad-handing itself by spreading the hype in the most pathetically overblown ways.

For a refreshing difference, look at how the original trailer brought in the crowds by the millions. Thrill to the utter lack of On The Nose Dialog.

*
Against expectations, when Director John Carpenter made THE THING, he wasn't out for nostalgia. He admired Howard Hawks too much to merely dry hump the original movie. So John allowed the original source material to provide inspiration and wound up making one of the greatest (if not the greatest) Science Fiction and/or Horror movie(s) to date.

Universal Pictures had absolutely no idea how to sell it and forced the movie to lose multi-millions.

^
Actually, Ackroyd and Ramis wanted Eddie Murphy for fellow scientist, Winston Zeddmore. That didn't work out and the studio was halfway through the shoot when Ernie Hudson got the job.

Did the 'Ghostbusters' trailer misrepresent Leslie Jones as a sassy sidekick?
By Donna Dickens
This morning Sony released the trailer for their rebooted take on the Ghostbusters universe. Thirty years after the original team saved New York City from the supernatural, a new generation of scientists have arrived for the passing of the proton pack.

I am personally stoked to see Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones suit up. Each woman has a distinct personality and look. I will forever be in love with McKinnon licking her gun. But as happy as I am to see these women join an iconic franchise, there was a problem with the trailer. Leslie Jones' character of Patty — the only woman of color in the cast — is also the only non-scientist member of the team.

Leslie Jones reacts to criticism of 'Ghostbusters' character
By Derrik J. Jang
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Leslie Jones ain't afraid of no ghost — or playing a transit worker.

The co-star of the upcoming all-female version of "Ghostbusters" took to Twitter to defend her role as a member of the paranormal-fighting group who appears in footage released Thursday to be an employee of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

The portrayal of the team's only non-white member as a subway worker in filmmaker Paul Feig's new "Ghostbusters" came under fire on social media after the trailer debuted online.

This Fan-Edited Ghostbusters Trailer Fixes Several Problems From the Official One
