EXCLUSIVE: 'La Llorona' To Haunt Universal Studios Hollywood Halloween Horror Nights!
Halloween is one of my favorite times of the year. The opportunity to dress up like anyone I want and steal candy from children is a wonderful way to bully young ones without getting caught. One of the other great things about Halloween are the haunted houses. Living in Los Angeles, some of the studio and special effects gurus go all out with their own front yard haunted attractions. There is one in Burbank every year that's really, really cool.

DISNEY ACQUIRES RADICAL'S OBLIVION
August 5th, 2010, Los Angeles, CA – Radical Publishing is proud to announce that Disney has acquired the film adaptation of OBLIVION, based on Radical Publishing's illustrated novel created by Tron: Legacy director, Joseph Kosinski, written by Rex Mundi creator, Arvid Nelson, and with illustrations by Andrée Wallin. OBLIVION will be directed by Joseph Kosinki and will be produced by Radical's President and Publisher, Barry Levine, and Kosinski. Radical Studios' Executive Vice President Jesse Berger is signed on as Executive Producer. Kosinki is repped by Verve and Anonymous Content while Radical is repped by CAA and David Schiff.
In a future where the Earth's surface has been irradiated beyond recognition, the remnants of humanity live above the clouds, safe from the brutal alien Scavengers that stalk the ruins. But when surface drone repairman Jak discovers a mysterious woman in a crash-landed pod, it sets off an unstoppable chain of events that will force him to question everything he knows.
"We're thrilled to partner with Joe Kosinski on OBLIVION," said Barry Levine, president of Radical Pictures. "Joe is one of the most creative forces in filmmaking today. From the moment he teamed with Radical to produce the book and film, he had such a clear vision of the OBLIVION landscape and universe. Add to that Joe's successful partnership with Disney on Tron: Legacy, and you have all the ingredients for a phenomenal action/adventure film."
OBLIVION, the 128-page illustrated novel, will be released in Summer 2011 and will feature prose, combined with over 40 fully painted landscape renderings. OBLIVION will be distributed worldwide through Random House.

BLIND FILMMAKER PUTS FINISHING TOUCHES ON DEBUT FEATURE
CAPE CORAL, FL: It's been a journey spanning nearly 5 years, cast and crew replacements, two hurricanes, four states and a suicide, but comic book writer-turned-director Joe Monks, with one distribution offer firmly in place, says the end is finally in sight...so to speak.
"We've had a zillion things go wrong," says Monks of his directorial debut, The Bunker. "Everything from reshoots to footage being ruined because someone clueless was standing next to our cameras with his cell phone on vibrate, to rescoring the entire film after receiving an offer for international distribution. I've had to dump a lot of dead weight along the way, but with the path finally clear, The Bunker should be out in 2011."
Monks, who lost his eyesight in 2002 to complications from diabetes (he's been a Type 1 diabetic since age 12), viewed the obstacles and distractions as opportunities to make the film stronger. "You learn a lot about the people around you when you're tackling a project like this. Something that's never been done before, something that's going to be groundbreaking. Either you fold and give up, or you find ways to make your film better. I wasn't about to let anything keep me from finishing the movie, the way I wanted it done. Not blindness, not diabetes, not sabotage from within. The rough cut got great festival reviews, our screener was well-received, and a cut without final sound design, film look or score secured us a distribution offer covering at least 5 territories. Why would I let distractions derail me?"
To ensure the final cut is as good as it can possibly be, Monks has entered the uncharted waters of microfinancing, putting up a project on the popular Kickstarter.com website. "I've refused to cut corners," says Monks. "I'm blind. I don't get another chance to make my first film. This one has to count. We're raising some additional funding to make sure everything's done right. The film look, the sound design, some ADR and re-recording, etc. What's left is largely cosmetic, so we've hired a post house equipped with the AVID system, which I think is going to be a substantial bonus in terms of production value. But it costs money, so we're going the microfunding route to put that together."

RAY BRADBURY'S CHRYSALIS
Change is the only constant in the universe…
As our world suffers the ravages of humankind, scientists look for ways to sustain life. When one of them falls ill and a chrysalis forms around him, a tug of war ensues about the future of the stricken scientist... and ultimately the fate of the Earth.
This compelling thriller is based on the short story written by Ray Bradbury, the acclaimed writer of such literary classics as FARENHEIT 451, THE MARTIAN CHRONICLES and SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES. The short story was originally published in AMAZING STORIES MAGAZINE in 1946 and was later included in Bradbury's science fiction anthology titled S IS FOR SPACE.
It is precisely Mr. Bradbury's legendary body of work and his numerous contributions to the literary and film industries that solidifies the world - wide appeal for this project.
"I wrote the story and sent it to ASTOUNDING SCIENCE FICTION and they rejected it", says Mr. Bradbury regarding the original story. "I rewrote it 3 times and finally when I was 24 years old it sold to AMAZING STORIES, but it took me four years when I was very young to write this story and get it published, and now that it's being turned into a motion picture over 50 years later it's great, I'm so happy".
The script for CHRYSALIS was developed under the master's guidance and it is the second collaboration between Urban Archipelago Films and this legendary author.
The first product to come out of the filmmakers and Bradbury's joint forces was the critically acclaimed short film A PIECE OF WOOD. The short film has been playing in film festivals nation wide since its Premiere in the fall of 2005 and is currently available ON DEMAND through AT&T Digital Cable via ILLUSION TV as well as online at JAMMAN.COM.
About The Film:
In the great tradition of one of America's most revered storytellers, CHRYSALIS presents a compelling exploration into human nature.
In the future: The world is ravaged, our planet is in a state of decay. In a research facility a handful of scientists research ways to sustain plant life. Scientist Benjamin Rockwell has been called to this decaying research facility. One of the scientists there, Smith, apparently has died. Smith lies on a table, his body transformed, his eyes and mouth grown shut. After getting over the shock, and completing an examination, Rockwell realizes that there is still a pulse within Smith...
His body continues changing...a chrysalis has grown around Smith in order to protect him.
Now in earth's darkest hours these scientists must figure out what mysteries lay inside the chrysalis.
CHRYSALIS is a thriller with a science fictional background and glimmers of hope from the beginning. Characters turn against each other's beliefs at the edge of a world that slowly disappears before they can discover ways to stop or prolong the planet's demise. Are they struggling hopelessly, trying to reach goals that may be unattainable?
The debate of science vs. faith is explored as the characters struggle with their beliefs, their doubts, their dreams, and their fears.
Can human beings change the course of nature? Could nature intervene as the world is effectively destroyed? Is the world worthwhile? In the darkest hours, would humans deserve another chance?
THE CHRYSALIS CREW AT THEIR DARK DELICACIES SIGNING IN BURBANK. |
RAY BRADBURY'S CHRYSALIS features John Klemantaski (THE CALL OF CTHULHU), Darren Kendrick (DISORDER), Corey Landis (DINOCROC VS. SUPERGATOR), Elina Madison (DEVIL GIRL), and newcomer Danny Cameron, with Larry Dirk (VAMPIRE CLAN), and Glen Vaughan (JESSE JAMES: LEGEND, OUTLAW, TERRORIST),
The film is produced by Roger Lay, Jr. and directed by Tony Báez Milán. Cheyenne Pesko is the editor and post-production supervisor. Gabriel Diniz serves as director of photography with production design by Gladys Rodriguez. Music is composed and conducted by Brandon Moore.
The film features special creature effects by Romaire Studios, the FX facility founded by EMMY Award winner Lee Romaire (VAN HELSING, WAR OF THE WORLDS).
Some of Romaire's recent credits include the TNT series NIGHTMARES AND DREAMSCAPES, based on the short stories of Stephen King as well as the HBO hit Drama series SIX FEET UNDER, for which he was awarded an Emmy award for outstanding make up effects (prosthethics).
Principal photography on RAY BRADBURY'S CHRYSALIS took place on multiple sets at the Burbank Production Stages where production designer Gladys Rodriguez and her art department built a completely connected and functional environment recreating an underground research facility. Each set was connected through a series of hallways and passageways allowing the crew to shoot continuously without revealing any set backings or lights. Everything was built-in allowing the film crew to follow the characters on camera from one part of the facility to another without ever having to cut. The filmmakers decided to go for a look that pays tribute to the science fiction films of the genre's golden age. For that same reason it was decided to build everything physically and limit the use of computer generated effects.
Additional work was done on the FX stage at Vlaze Media Networks in Los Angeles where multiple news segments and emergency broadcasts where shot in order to composite into monitors on the research facility set.
Second unit photography was completed at the El Mirage dry lake bed in California, and the rainforest of El Yunque in Puerto Rico where the film's breathtaking finale was shoot at 3,800 feet above sea level on one of the rainforest's highest peaks.
The film also features a sweeping orchestral score by composer Brandon Moore, which was recorded in Los Angeles utilizing a full orchestra combined with electronic sounds performed on synths by the composer to heighten the film's chilling undertone.

A Thriller for the kiddies, DESPICABLE ME
