You would expect the last weekend in October to be busy for Horror fans, and it's been real busy in my current neck of the woods here in Southern California.
Friday night was Horror movie night for the San Diego Independent Filmmakers Consortium's Pitchfest, Halloween Edition.
The Halloween mixer at the Sheraton Four Points hotel where the crowd swelled from last month's inaugural attendee number of around 200 plus, to over 400!
Some of the folks brought their Horror short films to show while others mingled or pitched in the separate pitch room. SFX make-up artists were also on hand to demonstrate their talents.
On the same day in LA, was the inaugural launch of the LA Horror Fest . This film festival took place at Raleigh Studios, which was also the site of the 2012 Shriekfest film festival earlier this month.
Tim Sullivan (2001 MANIACS, CHILLERAMA), Reggie Bannister (PHANTASM), and Gigi "Fast Elk" Bannister (THE GHASTLY LOVE OF JOHNNY X) were on hand Friday only, to support their movie, BLOODY BLOODY BIBLE CAMP.
On Saturday, Visual Effects Artist, Adam Howard (STAR TREK: FIRST CONTACT, STARSHIP TROOPERS, THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW, Steven Speilberg's WAR OF THE WORLDS, THE ISLAND, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MAN'S CHEST) hit the stage at 3pm to talk about his work in the industry.
The webseries, UNIVERSAL DEAD (wrote and produced by feoamante.com alumni Kelly Parks, with Production Design by E.C. McMullen Jr.), was one of the Official Selections of the film festival, but because it was finished and originally shown online in 2010, was too old to actually compete.
Security was unusually tight at the LA Horror Fest, but outside of the screenings, there was live music, food, beverages including alcohol, and plenty of vendors to keep the guests busy. The LA Horror Fest was co founded by Thomas Schroder and Sarah Agor (Scream Queens finalist: Season 1, HATCHET II, PENNHURST).
LA Horror Fest is sponsored by Creative America.org.
Counting the Screamfest on Oct. 12-21, that makes three Horror film festivals in LA for the month of October alone.
But that wasn't all for Southern California. Going on simultaneously this weekend was the Son of MonsterPalooza Halloween, featuring SFX Make-up artists like the Chiodo Bros. (CRITTERS, KILLER KLOWNS FROM OUTER SPACE), Tom Woodruff (THE THING, ALIEN vs PREDATOR), Kenneth J. Hall, and McKenzie Westmore of Face/Off.
Also on hand were Directors like Stuart Gordon (RE-ANIMATOR, STUCK) and Kevin Tenney (WITCHBOARD).
Celebrity guests included Veronica Cartwright (ALIEN, INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS [1978]), Lance Henrikson (TERMINATOR, ALIENS), Lisa Marie (SLEEPY HOLLOW, MARS ATTACKS!), and Malcolm McDowell (Rob Zombie's HALLOWEEN, DOOMSDAY, THE BOOK OF ELI).
So what are you, were you, up to for Halloween 2012?
Tell me about it at my blog, Feo Amante!
