THE KUNTAUTCULT:
FROM THE PITS . . .
Displeased |
|
The Dutch
are breeding metallers of a most extreme nature. CENTURIAN,
UNLORD, GOD DETHRONED, DEAD HEAD, among others, and now THE
KUNTAUTCULT. The cool thing about the aforementioned bands
is how they only intersect by way of intensity; their styles are their
own. THE KUNTAUTCULT
is no exception.
Take the
grinding intensity of CRYPTOPSY and
add a little catchiness that manages not to sicken, and youve got
a very spastic, blasting entity on your hands. And insanity? Would you
expect something else from a band with a song title like "Axe Rectal
Trunk Pisser?" Thats only the tip of the iceberg. A sense of
humor is very apparent with these guys, as the cover of "Venus"
perfectly exemplifies. Whod have thought you could turn that radio
favorite into a death-grind flesh-peeler? Just add some rapid double bass
and accelerate the tempo to blasting territory and beyond. There are also
two mock acoustic songs, the irony being that theyre actually very
well played. If they didnt precede songs like the manic "Use
Your Dagger" and if they didnt have names like "From the
Pits of Hell" and "My Beds are Made of Turds," youd
probably be fooled. "Pop Goes the Weasel" stops for a sample
you may recognize from Rodriguez/Tarantinos FROM
DUSK TILL DAWN, and just as quickly picks up again. "Galaxy
Legends" speeds away before suddenly stopping to segue into the music
from CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST.
The song
lengths alternate, with "Use Your Dagger" ending near six minutes
and "120 Bar of Pressure Up Your Appendix" finishing in less
than one. The coherent production works well in their favor, and you really
have to like something where the riding double bass hits are as loud as
the snare during the blasts. Theres a great level of creativity
and intensity throughout FROM
THE PITS . . ., and while I was expecting a great deal of craziness
I still got a lot more than I bargained for. Buy, buy, buy.
