CLOVERFIELD
On this day in 2008, in Hollywood's dumpster drop month of January, this Big Horror monster movie written by Drew Goddard (CABIN IN THE WOODS), directed by Matt Reeves, and produced by J.J. Abrams (SUPER 8), became a surprise hit for Paramount Pictures.
The latest surprise is the super secretly made sequel, 10 CLOVERFIELD LANE.
Kelly Parks wrote the review,
It's a giant monster movie. You can't help but think GODZILLA. That's okay, but I want you to keep another mythos in mind. Something American. More on that later.
CLOVERFIELD was written by Drew Goddard (BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER [TV, ANGEL [TV],LOST [TV], ALIAS [TV]) and directed by Matt Reeves (CONVICTION [TV]). It opens with color bars and a warning that what we're about to watch is government property: video recovered from the "Cloverfield" incident, from an area "formerly known as Central Park".

Neil Patrick Harris will star in Netflix's A Series of Unfortunate Events
By Dante D'Orazio
Jim Carrey brought us our first live-action taste of Count Olaf from A Series of Unfortunate Events, but Netflix's upcoming TV series adaptation is (thankfully) going in a different direction. None other than Neil Patrick Harris will take on the starring role. Who wouldn't think that Dr. Horrible could aptly take on the role of the villainous uncle who makes life miserable for the three Baudelaire orphans?

The Creator of Mr. Robot Says Season 2 Will Be Even Darker
Even more paranoia, conspiracy, and mental illness.
By Julia Black
What is it that makes Mr. Robot, the Golden Globes' newly crowned Best Drama Series about a disillusioned young hacker who sparks a global meltdown–or utopian revolution, depending on whom you ask–so damn watchable? Is it the grey, gloomy color palette; the antisocial, monotone-voiced narrator and protagonist Elliot Alderson; or maybe the uncomfortable way every episode exposes you (yes, you!) as just another willing victim of corporate tyranny, tech addiction, and the soul-sucking alienation of modern capitalist society? Bring on the popcorn, am I right?

FX's Legion won't crossover with X-Men films
By Natalie Abrams
Despite Legion's leading character hailing from the X-Men universe, fans of the Marvel property should not expect the FX project to crossover with the film franchise.
Legion, which is being developed by Fargo's Noah Hawley, tells the story of David Haller, who was diagnosed schizophrenic as a teenager and spent years in and out of psychiatric hospitals. But after an encounter with a fellow patient, he's confronted with the possibility that the voices he hears and the visions he sees might be real. For those of you who haven't read the comics, Haller is actually the mutant son of...

Alan Rickman's two final film roles will be dramatically different
by Kirsten Acuna
Actor Alan Rickman has died at the age of 69 after a battle with cancer.
Best known for his roles in 1989's "Die Hard," "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves," and, to a younger generation, the "Harry Potter" franchise, Rickman's impressive career spanned nearly three decades.
But his contribution to film isn't over — the late actor still has two very different films releasing later this year for fans to enjoy.

HOLY FREAKING CLOVERFIELD?
Arguably J.J. Abrams best produced movie ever*, CLOVERFIELD is getting folks all worked up again in a way that having Abrams' name attached to STAR TREK and Star Wars never did, and SUPER 8 never will.
Why? You haven't heard of the new trailer, 10 CLOVERFIELD LANE?
Also wickedly cool is that Dan Trachtenberg is directing. You may recall Dan also directed the kick ass short film, PORTAL: NO ESCAPE.
*Can't say that of Star Trek or Star Wars: The Force Awakens, they being the 9th or so movie sequels in a 50 to nearly 40 year madly successful franchise (take yer pick).

RIP'N FOR ALAN RICKMAN
Unbelievable.
Three of the best beloved and respected British artists of the 21st century all die of cancer less than 20 days of each other.
All were about the same age as well, with MOTÖRHEAD musician Lemmy Kilmister dying on December 28, 2015 at 70 - only 2 days after his diagnosis. Musician David Bowie died on January 10, 2016. Now only four days later, actor Alan Rickman dies of cancer.

Angus Scrimm dies at 89; cult horror icon starred in 'Phantasm' movies

Cast an actor for a movie, and you never know what you might summon up.
That came home to director Don Coscarelli when he first dropped by the makeup table to check on Angus Scrimm.
Coscarelli was about to direct what would become the cult classic horror movie "Phantasm." Up till then, he knew his lead actor chiefly as a kindly journalist who loved classical music and small, fuzzy dogs.
But now he found a new, ominous Scrimm examining his makeup in the mirror. As Coscarelli watched from behind, Scrimm contemplated his own reflected visage — pale face, strange hair. Then he lifted an eyebrow.
