FAMOUS MONSTERS: IN THE NIGHT

USA Release: Oct. 20, 1998

Sean Yseult, formerly of WHITE ZOMBIE fame, has struck out on her own since Rob gave her the boot. Her cure for the blues is a group that is proud to be a "chick" band. You like camp? This band is so damn camp your teeth will be grinding themselves down to a thick paste just listening to it.

Sean has renamed herself Devil Doll. Her bassist, Brijitte West is Vampire Girl. The drummer, Carol Cutshall is She-Zilla, complete with a glittery green costume with dino back plates. In the inner sleeve they all agree that Tokyo is their favorite city and Cheap Trick is their favorite band. After that the "girls" express their individuality.

Sean lists her favorite T.V. show as Scooby-Doo.

One of Brijitte West's turn-ons is David Cassidy.

Carol Cutshall's turn-offs are Ghidra and Mothra.

Trust me, this sets the tone for the album. It's danceable with a Go-Go's kind of beat set to a 1960's fast strumming California Beach style a la Dick Dale (Hey, the girls just love him!). While the band express their thanks to THE CRAMPS, don't expect more than a shadow of that kind of madness here. Every song on the album sounds nearly identical to the one before. Except for two covers, a Cheap Trick tune and (GAG!) a cover of a song from an old Saturday Morning 1970's T.V. show, The Groovie Ghoulies. How kitsch can you get?

Is this painful yet?

Just wait until you listen to it. This is probably the first Surf Rock Band from New Orleans and without a doubt, this IS a party album. It is meant to be played in the background while you do more important things. It is NOT meant to be listened to, track for track. But I had to write this review so . . .

The Horror! The Horror!

This is not to say that the band is no good, they are. They all have the talent and the chops to play their VERY limited repertoire and the album was also mixed well.

It is just sooo CAMP! A fact that the "girls" can't resist bragging about, even while they giggle inanely to each other on track after track. This is Spice Girls with a REAL sense of humor and the REAL Girl Power to back it up.

This album is Hell!

This album is Torture!

Thousands of my brain cells died screaming just from listening to it. I fully recommend this CD for flushing terrorists out of hiding or ending a hostage situation.

This CD gets one Perplex skull and if Sean ever reads this she may be tickled pink. FAMOUS MONSTERS: IN THE NIGHT is THE soundtrack band for the next Troma movie!

Meanwhile, I have to recover.
