DECEMBER 30 A FINE,
DARK READING Of course, the second best thing (besides writing) that Joe does is read. And that's what he'll be doing in January at at least three locations. On Wednesday, January 8, Book People in Austin, TX, will be hosting a reading. On Thursday, January 9, the Barnes & Noble in Webster, TX, welcomes the Mojo writer. Then on Thursday, January 14, Murder by the Book in Houston, TX, will play host as Joe holds court. If you are near any of those places, please consider this a personal invitation to mosey over and enjoy enjoy enjoy!
DECEMBER 17 Welcome newcomer reviewer to feoamante.com, M Stephen Lukac, who gives us his review on our own Harry Shannon's NIGHT OF THE BEAST. DEON
SANDERS WRITES SOUTHERN HORROR! He
goes on to say "The novel is definitely the Horror Novel of the Century."
Admirable hubris indeed! According to his press release: "As a freshman
horror author in the publishing world. The New Face of Horror, Deon C.
Sanders, a father of six, is on his way to writing numerous bestselling
horror novels, inspiring poems, and feature film screenplays. However,
his passion is horror writing. His first horror novel Miss Mary
Weather: A Southern Nightmare has been a success in the minds of
horror readers and has been well received in Chicago and in other major
city bookstores. MISS MARY WEATHER: A Southern Nightmare (ISBN#
158851837X) is also available in book stores now and online. His
next completed horror novel is titled I,AM- MISS MARY
WEATHER: A SOUTHERN NIGHTMARE takes place in a rural black community in
the deep South, where there is a myth of a woman who is the most terrifying
female creature ever unleashed in this world.
DECEMBER 13 ![]() It was first supposed to come out in April of 2002 at the World Horror Convention - but the publisher dropped it and a new one stepped in. Then it was supposed to be released in August at the Horrorfind convention - but there was a gross printing error. Then it was supposed to be released in September - make that October - er... anybody up for November? Finally, FINALLY, Catalyst Press has proudly (if exhaustedly) announced the release of editor Brian Knight's RANDOM ACTS OF WEIRDNESS. It seems like adversity large or small brings people together. It was back in early 2001 when my story WHAT'S WRONG WITH MILDRED was accepted by editor Brian Knight for Random Acts of Weirdness. Through the months, there came changes. First this was changed, then that was changed, Brian kept in touch with all of his contributors - which included a number of artists as well. His publisher finally dropped the whole thing and Brian had to go a-hunting. During this time, I had become friends with another editor, Monica O'Rourke, who had accepted my story, SOME PEOPLE, for publication in HER new anthology, DECADENCE. As time passed we kept in constant contact. There were ups and downs. Finally, a reputable publisher was found in the form of Monica J. O'Rourke, who had started writing columns for me by that time. Monica decided, in 2002, to try her hand at publishing. One of the first books she accepted was RAW. But trials and tribulations prevailed and somewhen, while all of that was going on, both Monica and Brian volunteered to take over the sections of feoamante.com, Story Time and Shadow Music, respectively. Shouldn't I have been mad at these two? They jerked me and many other writers and artists around on this damn anthology for over a year! Nope. I know too well how difficult it is to start out, and how easily a promise made can be broken due to unforseen circumstances. Instead I applaud these two because they made a commitment and kept pushing forward against great odds to see it through. Our Monica J. O'Rourke, publisher of Catalyst Press, said, "It was rough going for a while with (Random Acts Of Weirdness) - I started to think it was jinxed. But I never gave up on it because it has some fantastic stories, and I'm really proud to be the publisher of this anthology. I know readers are going to love it." Our Brian Knight (Shadow Music), editor of the book, had this to say, "R.A.W. has been a long time coming, almost a year in the making - from its conceptual birth at WHC 2001 in Seattle to completion just before WHC 2002. Then it spent several months in editorial limbo, going from Prime Books to Catalyst Press. Further delays include a formatting problem that ruined the first print run. Thanks to the patience of the contributing authors and the diligence of Monica at Catalyst Press, R.A.W. has finally arrived. This book has a few well know authors in it (Kathryn Ptacek [GHOST DANCE] and Charlee Jacob [GUISES, Delirium Books], just to name two) and several who I'm sure will become well known. I can honestly say R.A.W is the highlight of my humble editing career. I'm privileged to have worked with everyone involved." In addition
to Ptacek and Jacob, the anthology contains stories by authors whose published
works include: If there is some kind of an award for wildest damn cover art, then Book cover artist GAK (co-creator, DEAD CAT BOUNCE & DEAD CATS BOUNCING w/Gerard Houarner), just might get it. The cover design is by Feo Amante (Cover designer, DECADENCE 2, Flesh & Blood Press).
DECEMBER 12 Originally
reported in today's issue of HellNotes by Garrett Peck BUT HELLNOTES HAS ROSE FROM THE . . . well, not grave exactly. The corpse was still warm. but certainly ROSE FROM THE MORGUE! And saved by none other than our Judi Rohrig! Who Garrett Peck justifiably calls "an editor of vast talent and experience." Garrett went on to say Those of you in HWA know what a terrific job Judi did during the year she was in charge of the HWA Internet Mailer (award winning work). In addition to that experience, Judi and her husband once ran a weekly newspaper, so she is well aware of the amount of time and work that goes into a weekly publication. The recipient of the first Richard Laymon Award for extraordinary service to the HWA, Judi is well connected to the genre and is an ideal choice to continue the Hellnotes tradition forged by David B. Silva and Paul F. Olson. I have every confidence that Judi will not only maintain the quality of Hellnotes, but is apt to improve it. Garrett will edit HellNotes through January with Judi taking over in February.
DECEMBER 6 From
Judi
Rohrig
Citing a number of reasons, among them refusing to cut payment of professional rates for his well-respected contributors - Brian Hodge, Kathy Ptacek, Hank Wagner, to name a few - and other financial crunches caused by lagging subscriptions and dwindling personal funds, Peck added his concern that cutting back staffing could allow the magazine to "represent one person's opinions." This he refused to do. There is also the matter of Peck's own writing career which has suffered due to the demands of the weekly news sheet. "In a year in which I've received my first invitations to contribute to anthologies, my fiction writing has ground to a virtual halt," Peck said in his column. He has had stories appear in STORIES THAT WON'T MAKE YOUR PARENTS HURL and STONES as well as enjoying editorial responsibilities for both volumes of TOOTH & CLAW and last year's Bram Stoker nominated PERSONAL DEMONS. Subscribers to Hellnotes will not be left out in the cold. Their subscriptions will be transferred to Jobs in Hell, another weekly e-zine edited by Kelly Laymon, daughter of the late horror writer, Richard Laymon. Jobs in Hell, recipient of the 2001 Bram Stoker Award, serves primarily as a marketing resource for horror writers. Since JiH does not run reviews, Peck says he will continue to offer those on an infrequent basis via email. Peck also said: "Obviously, my decision to end Hellnotes did not come easily or without a great deal of regret and sadness. I was deeply honored that Dave and Paul trusted me to continue Hellnotes...." He ended his editorial on a positive note: "But hey, let's not start the wake too soon. You've got a whole new issue to read and several more to come before the switch. There's plenty more coming your way, so stay tuned. If Hellnotes must end, I aim to see it go out in style." |

J. O'Rourke John has taken it a step further. He's offering his retouched and revisited novel to readers for free. About the novel, John offers: "ROSES GROW is a haunted house story set in a mansion in rural upstate New York. (Protagonist) Nicholas Brighton's life has been utterly changed, and he's been offered a moment's respite by his fabulously wealthy lover, to stay at her place upstate. But from the night he arrives - and even before his arrival - he will not sleep well, and his dreams will be filled with faces of people he's not yet met . . . some of whom died a century ago." To enjoy
this exciting-and better yet, free-novel, visit John's website: Dark
Fluidity.

DarkEcho Assistant Editor Michele Patterson resigned after Guran's dismissal. Publisher Rich Black will take over all editorial duties. All unanswered submissions will be turned over to Black. No further submissions will be taken until new guidelines have been issued. Questions concerning submissions or guidelines should be directed to Black (horrorgarage@aol.com; 631.585.7471; POB 53, Neconset, NY 11767).
NOVEMBER 22 From
Judi
Rohrig Ivey added that Klaw will continue to contribute an occasional review or feature piece to RevolutionSF, but for the most part the award-winning editor will be concentrating his energies more fully on his own projects including publication of GEEK CONFIDENTIAL: ECHOES FROM THE 21ST CENTURY, a title to be published by MonkeyBrain, Inc. But just
as things end, others continue. Fiction, both new and classic will continue
to be published at the website. Slated for December are stories by Mark
Finn, Don Webb, David Prill, Jack London, Scott Cupp, and Jayme Lynn Blaschke.
And there's still time to catch a Joe R. Lansdale classic
NOVEMBER 21 DREDGING
UP DREG A psychological werewolf story about an ancient serial killer pursued by a psychic with faltering ability and a terminally ill homicide detective, DREG was written by Terry M. West, who has come to call DREG "...one of the best known unpublished novels around." Long optioned, but never published by Laurel Publishing, the full length novel (Terry's first!) has been picked up by Publish America for publication in 2003. Terry M. West is largely known as a independent Horror film maker of such titles as DARK MUSE, which is based on the International Horror Guild nominated comic book series of the same name.

Michael Laimo It's very easy. Simply go to Chapteraday.com, sign up for the Horror/Sci-Fi club by entering your e-mail address. That's it. Then, you'll get your sampling of ATMOSPHERE for free. Piece of cake. It's a great way to help support my first book, as well as the horror genre. ATMOSPHERE has garnered extremely positive reviews from the likes of Dark Fluidity, Horror World, HiKeeba.com, SFSite.com, and The Midwest Book Review. In addition, the book has received numerous recommendations in the first novel category for the HWA's Bram Stoker Award, and is currently on the consideration list for the MWA's Edgar Award in the category for first novel. Thanks so much to those who have read the book and deemed it worthy for such marks of distinction. I do hope that after reading the first three chapters you might be inclined to locate a copy of the book, either in the store, the library, or from a friend.
NOVEMBER 18 From Judi
Rohrig This time out, Doug's story is called WATCHING THE NIGHTINGALES. Though the posting at Clegg's website advises that signing up for his free newsletter which gets you his free novel means you are agreeing to sponsor the serial, all Clegg asks is that you go buy his current novel, THE HOUR BEFORE DARK. Considering Clegg's master storytelling abilities, that's not too much to ask. It's a lot like asking people to go pick up an ice cream cone in their favorite flavor. I could tell you just how to subscribe, but just visiting Clegg's site is so much fun, I'd hate for you to miss the experience. Be sure not to miss the illustration by Caniglia. All this is powerful stuff. So check out DouglasClegg.com
NOVEMBER 15 From
Brian A. Hopkins I might have mentioned that my fantasy story Roads End will appear in the new French magazine ASPHODALE. You can see the gorgeous cover (with my name on it woohoo!) there. If you run the page through the translator at Google, youll get a rather goofy translation, but its better than nothing. This second issue of ASPHODALE will be out in February. Want a peek
at what you missed by not going to World Fantasy Con with me? Judi put
some pics online, including one of scifi legend Gene Wolfe and me comparing
our pocket knives. Mines bigger, Gene! Nyah! Ive linked her
page in from my own site, but you can get there directly by going to Judi's
WFC
2002 page. Lots of deals
in the making for me right now, and lots of great things coming next year.
Therell be a new hardcover collection of bah short fiction from
PS Publishing, with an introduction by Gene Wolfe. No amount of talking
could have made me believe, way back when I first read SHADOW OF THE TORTURER,
that Id one day not only know Gene personally, but that hed
consent to write an introduction for a collection of my own writing. I
am tickled pink. Im not yet sure what the title of the book will
be, but you guys know to watch here for more information. Therell
also be a new Zolotow book, LIPSTICK, LIES, AND LADY LUCK, featuring old
and new Zolo stuff, plus an introduction by Ed
Gorman in hardcover, no less! As with Gene, I cant
believe Im fortunate Thanksgiving's
coming up. if I don't talk to you before then, be thankful for your health.
Be thankful for the loyal SOBs who love you in spite of all your shortcomings.

Rohrig Now Newman reveals additional talented sides of himself in a new audio release of HOLY ROLLERS from Lone Wolf Publications. Newman's tackled more than just reading his story, though. He's added sound effects and original music as well. Limited to 200 signed and numbered compact disks, this second in the LWPAudio line can be played on any regular compact disk player (car, personal, computer, home) since it is audio only. From Judi Rohrig SIGNING LANGUAGE A couple of years ago, Hellnotes Editor and Cemetery Dance reviewer Garrett Peck arranged a bookstore signing for Bram Stoker winning author Owl Goingback (CROATA) in St. Augustine, FL. Later in the evening, Owl, Nancy Goingback, Robert W. Walker, Garrett, and I all tromped around the oldest city in the US on one of their famous Ghost Tours. After the official tour, our guide was kind enough to take us to the Tolomato Cemetery, an historic landmark and one truly spooky place where the barbed wire fence faces IN! From that midnight visit, Owl gives us BREED, a totally cool story! On Saturday,
November 15, Dark Delicacies in Burbank, CA, will welcome Owl as he talks
about and signs his new book BREED. Joining Owl will be actor/stuntman
Jeff Moldovan (Trancers 4 & 5, THE OBLIVION,
more) who will be signing photos. Happens at 7:30 p.m. PST.
NOVEMBER 12 From
John B. Ford From November 2002 till March 2003 authors are invited to submit the best possible story they can produce between 2000 and 5000 words to the e-mail address: submissions@terrortales.org. Please make the title of your e-mail TOP INTERNATIONAL HORROR and send your story pasted into the body of an e-mail; one story per author. No reprints are allowed. All stories will be featured online anonymously, uploaded shortly after they are received, and message boards will be provided for feedback from readers and writers alike. Voting on the stories will commence on 1st April 2003 and will run through till 1st June, with each participating author having to vote for his/her 15 favourite stories, not including their own. Authors will then be revealed and the book line-up announced. Any authors not voting will be disqualified. We envisage this book as being a groundbreaking event in the genre. This contest is open to ALL authors working in the horror genre. The 15 stories with the most votes will be published in the book 'Top Internatonal Horror 2003' to be launched during September 2003 at the Terror Scribes Society Convention in Birmingham. Have your strongest story featured online for *free* at Rainfall Books website in the horror genres biggest and best online contest, gain feedback from other readers and writers and have the story printed in the 'Top International Horror 2003' book if it's voted into the top fifteen of the contest. (This FeoNote is for morons only - and I wish I didn't have to belabor the obvious - but to save Terror Tales and Rainfall books the grief: PLEASE go to their websites FIRST and read the guidelines before submitting.)
NOVEMBER 8 From
Andy Fairclough In addition Horror World has added a further two boards for authors published in the US mass market. Thomas Sullivan (author of THE MARTYRING) has a new release BORN BURNING out through Signet and Dale Bailey also has his mass market debut (THE FALLEN) released by the same publisher. These boards and dozens more can be found at Horror World. (FeoNote
1.0: The following "Press Release" is the kind of babbling
wandering homeless street person weirdness I have to put up with on a
daily basis! Yeah, I'm there for yall, all right!) Just what the f*** has happened to "the living embodiment of the Marquis de Sade" (Feo Amante News 2001) Hertzan Chimera of late? Plumbing the depths of the creative psyche could be a lame answer. Screwing incubus assholes would be the expected alternative, no doubt. Covered in whorelick, drenched in arm mud. But... wait a minute. So early in Chimera's career and already dead (!) Anything of worth has already been said (?) Who the Hell would interview TOM PICCIRILLI as a jolly green-glowing ghost tethered to the kitchen table of Cannibal cuisine? Why else would DESTINY WEST dig up Chimera's rotting corpse for an earlier interview? But "mea culpa" where is the murder weapon and who the culprit? Investigations lead us to Jack Philbin who cut the throat of Chimera in an Aberdeen back-alley of piss-stink and spilled the interrogating blood all over the soft white breasts of one ALEX SEVERIN. Seems Chimera had some sort of deal going with an English horror site called TERROR TALES. The last batch of interviews of luminaries such as CHARLEE JACOB, polycarp kusch, EDWARD LEE, JACK KETCHUM (!), MF KORN, MONICA J. O'ROURKE, QUEENIE TYRONE, CHRISTINA SNG, AMY GRECH, KURT NEWTON and Medium Rare Books' own JOHN TURI were all Chimera originals. Maybe he knew his time had come and he was quickly tying off all the ligatures to his fate. The last authenticated interview of Chimera was executed by John Lawson over at THE DREAM PEOPLE. And Chimera's Kodak-delayed photo report of the Baltimore HORRORFIND 2002 convention may have upset a few delicate horror stars trying to keep their chin above water in a self-diluting market. Even now, as the vultures still circle the Police crime scene, publisher Eraserhead Press is chomping at the bit to bring out his novel UNITED STATES in time to cash in on the demise of the English gentleman of psycho-horror literature. There is talk of a final hardcore sexhorror collaborative collection BOYFISTGIRLSUCK by Hertzan Chimera and Alex Severin to be published by, appropriately, Massacre Publishing, who refused to be goaded by questions on the matter. This just when Chimera seemed to have hit the big time with stories in FANGORIA and the continuation of his FUCK STAR 12-episode sci-fi fuck festival over at WEIRD SPACE. Maybe it was that one story STAYER published posthumously by WILDCLOWN CHRONICLES - the only Chimera story known to have been written in the States (an all-day-breakfast hole on Hollywood Boulevard, May 2002) that should remain as the poignant epitaph to his short life of literary crime. "Rumours of my death have been greatly over-marketed..." Hertzan Chimera, Nov 2002. (FeoNote2.0:
ARGH! Enough! The above makes Tiresius seem sane! If this
torture is your cup of Grey Earl, then get the hell outta here and go

Judi
Rohrig Citing dragging sales despite an honest effort to shore up business at their Sherman Oaks, CA, location, owners Lydia Marano Cover and Arthur Byron Cover have decided to go with the flow and close the doors of their 21-year-old "physical" bookstore and operate as an Internet business solely. Signings with authors Barbara Hambly and Harry Turtletove have been cancelled. Only one final live signing event remains before the DV retooling begins. On Saturday, November 23, from 2-4 p.m., horror master Harlan Ellison will sign his namesake anthology DANGEROUS VISIONS at the photography studio next door which is operated by Brian Rose. Books for that signing must be ordered and paid for in advance. The entire
statement of closing and opportunities for acquiring signed copies of
Ellison's works are available at the DV website: readsf.com/. From Judi Rohrig HOPKINS DIRKS AND SKEWERS William Gagliani in his review at ChiZine says: "(EL DIA DE LOS MUERTOS) may be only 100 pages in length, but it's packed. Multiple Stoker Award-winning author and editor Brian A. Hopkins scores again with a multi-layered work that draws emotion effortlessly from committed readers while also raising the 'grotesque factor' by quite a few degrees in just the right way. Anyone who's read earlier Hopkins collections such as SALT WATER TEARS and THESE I KNOW BY HEART will already know that he has the innate ability to slip an emotional dirk through your jaded armor and skewer your heart just when you don't expect it." On Friday,
November 22, at 10:00 p.m. (EST), Brian A.
Hopkins will be chatting online at Cybling.com
and AOL's Other
World's Cafe, discussing his new book, EL DIA DE LOS MUERTOS,
and how he consistently manages to dirk and skewer readers. Please join
him!
NOVEMBER 5 From Judi
Rohrig Then on Saturday, November 9, at 2:00 p.m., cartoonist, author, reviewer, and illustrator Gahan Wilson will be signing his new books, Gahan Wilson's GRAVEDIGGERS' PARTY and Gahan Wilson's 2003 YEAR OF THE WEIRD CALENDAR. The following weekend, Bram Stoker Award-winning author Owl Goingback (CROATA) will be signing copies of his new book BREED on Friday, November 15, at 7:30 p.m. (PST) at Dark Delicacies. Joining Owl will be film stuntman and actor Jeff Moldovan who will be putting his pen to some of his photos.
NOVEMBER 2 We
kick off the month of November with three new reviews. |

Joe Nassise Second, there are three great (and very different) interviews with me floating around out there in cyberspace this month. Weston Ochse (co-author of APPALACHIAN GALAPAGOS and SCARY REDNECKS) conducted an interview with me during the hectic days of Horrorfind II. This Thursday, that interview will be running in this week's edition of Hellnotes. If you are not a subscriber, you are missing a great newsletter (and a cool interview!) - drop by hellnotes.com and check things out. Co-editor Jon Merz and I also chatted with the editor of Savage Night about our subscription email magazine, Planet Pulp. You can catch that discussion at angelfire.com/ / /interviews/htm if your are interested. And finally, the great horror website Buried.com is also running an interview with me, regarding my recent election to the position of president for the Horror Writers Association. You can find that one at buried.com/ /joe_nassise.shtml. Finally,
next week I take over as president of the HWA. We've got a lot of great
things planned between now and the New Year - if you are a member, keep

Nassise The brainchild of entrepreneur Suzanne Beecher, Chapteraday.com currently offers seven different book clubs to choose from; everything from business to romance to audio works is represented. Their eighth and newest club will focus on the best that the horror and dark fantasy genre has to offer. Membership in any of their clubs is free. Subscribers receive an excerpt from that week's selected book in their email each day, Monday through Friday. The selections are designed to be short, taking up no more than five minutes of reading time a day, with the stated goal of getting people ordinarily too busy to read hooked on reading again. When the week is over, members can purchase the book from Booksamillion or check it out from the local library. Each week brings a new selected book. Says HWA
President Joseph Nassise, "Horror fiction serves an important function
in our society Currently reaching over 100,000 readers and being offered in more than 3500 public libraries across the country, the book preview clubs have been a huge success. "With the world's largest organization of horror writers behind this new club, readers are going to be getting the very best works to preview. What more could a lover of dark fiction want?" LOOKS LIKE IT'S BECOMING OCTOBER BECOMING OCTOBER, Simmons first collection, has been garnering praise from horror heavy-hitters like Tom Piccirilli, Tim Lebbon and Gary Braunbeck. Lebbon says: Simmons is superb, a true craftsman whose written nightmares most writers would be happy to dream. This is horror as it should be writtenchallenging, lyrical, intelligent, and frightening as bloody hell! You can check out the first installment of The Field, a short story from the BECOMING OCTOBER collection, at Writer Online,a webzine edited by horror novelist T.M. Wright. After an 18-month hiatus, this acclaimed magazine is back, stronger than ever.
OCTOBER 4 From Shane
Ryan Staley So one may
wonder what's on the horizon for Delirium
now. And I'll answer this briefly and get on to the rest of the newsletter.
The future of Delirium
is strong and with continued support from readers and the horror community,
Delirium
will come back even stronger in 2003. I think Delirium
has already proven that it's an honest business and, unlike other publishers
who have bit the dust and taken money from fans and readers, Delirium
cares about its business ethics. When this flood hit and the books were
canceled, customers who preordered canceled titles were given 100% refunds
within one week or given the option to substitute titles. I can't stress
this enough: Delirium
owes its success to readers and supporters who purchase our titles - you
are the reason I exist in business today. My immediate plans are to continue
to please Delirium
supporters by offering great titles along with great customer service.
Although the number of books next year has decreased, the future is bright One thing
I do ask is something simple. For all of you who read and love Delirium
titles, I ask for you to take the time - a few minutes - to tell someone
about the books we offer. E-mail a friend who loves horror or a co-worker.
Support is the key to Delirium's
existence, as it is with any small press without an outside source of
financial backing. Delirium
goes against the corporate presses each day and we have succeeded. But
we need to gain support and word of mouth remains the best way to acheive
this support. So please take the time and pass on the word. Thanks! -SRS

Wire Steve Pendergrast, co-founder of Fictionwise, said: "Libwise allows anyone - from a traditional public library to a corporate library or even an author fan website - to loan eBooks to their membership using a customized website branded by the library. Setup is simple, taking as little as an hour, and all hosting and customer support is handled by Fictionwise for a low monthly fee. No technical expertise is required." The Libwise product allows patrons to download borrowed eBooks to their personal computers or many popular handheld devices such as Palm, PocketPC, WinCE, Psion, or even some Nokia cell phones. EBooks are read using the free Mobipocket reading software. Mobipocket's secure technology enables eBooks to "time-out," which makes the entire model possible. Borrowers may read the eBooks during a checkout period - configurable by the library from a few days to a few weeks - after which the eBook file expires and then becomes available for the next patron to borrow. The patron interface is accessible through any industry standard web browser and can be customized to look just like another part of the library's general website. "Libwise
provides library staff with a powerful administrative console," said
Scott Pendergrast, co-founder of Fictionwise.com. "The console allows
them to control checkout periods, waiting lists, and other library policies.
In addition, the console provides a suite of reports to help the library's
staff determine which eBooks have the highest usage rates, patron activity,
and other information." The Libwise product is very cost effective, making it practical for even tiny libraries or private groups such as clubs, church groups, author fan websites, or corporate libraries to field a full-featured eBook lending website. A website powered by Libwise can be set up, hosted, and fully supported by Fictionwise for as little as $29.95 a month. The librarian may select content from a growing catalog of contemporary titles that already numbers in the thousands, and in dozens of categories, both fiction and nonfiction. When used in a 'book club' environment, the system can be configured to automatically collect dues from participants. Public libraries would not use that feature, but would use Libwise's ability to validate card-holding patrons using the library's existing OPAC (open public access catalog) system. Public libraries can also enable a "donation" system that allows patrons to donate eBooks or cash to the library. Kelly Ford, owner and founder of KnowBetter.com, said: "By building our new 'KnowBetter Lending Library' on the Libwise platform, we'll be able to offer eBook readers thousands of electronic titles they can freely check out - at any time of the day or night. The technology involved is truly remarkable. Libwise allows us to provide another great service to our readers, continue to work on our core website, and still have a little free time to read a few eBooks ourselves. Information about Libwise can be found at: www.libwise.com ABOUT FICTIONWISE Fictionwise.com is the leading independent eBook retailer today with over 6,700 eBooks in all categories of fiction and nonfiction for sale in formats for personal computers and virtually all handheld devices. With sales topping 15,000 eBooks per month and the extensive customer service experience that it brings, Fictionwise (claims it) is uniquely positioned to service the fast-growing library market for eBooks. Contact:
Scott Pendergrast (FeoNote: The question here is: Does Fictionwise or Libwise pay the authors their full dues as if the library actually bought their book? This story bears watching, especially for those authors who signed over the electronic rights to their stories.) |

SEPTEMBER 30 by Chris
Reed Not only did he pick up the Best Novel Award (the August Derleth Fantasy Award) for THE NIGHT OF THE TRIFFIDS, but he also received the Best Short Fiction Award for "Goblin City Lights" from URBAN GOTHIC: LACUNA AND OTHER TRIPS. After the ceremony, Simon Clark said: 'More than ten years ago I went to my first awards ceremony of the British Fantasy Society, saw writers and editors collecting the awards they'd won, and I wondered what they were feeling at that moment. Now I know, and believe me it's an extraordinarily good feeling. I'm proud and pleased to win both awards for best short story and best novel. Awards like this not only boost a writer's self-confidence but vividly demonstrate that readers do back their favourite writers by taking time out to vote for them. I know every time I see the statuettes it's going to give me a hell of a boost and encourage me to push back the boundaries of what I'm doing.' (Congratulations, long lost! -feo)
SEPTEMBER 25 From Edo
van Belkom Edited by Edo van Belkom and published by Tundra Books (McClelland & Stewart) BE VERY AFRAID! features 14 stories about the real-life problems of teenagers, from smoking and alcohol abuse to dieting and abusive parents, from meeting someone on the Internet to growing up gay in a very small town. Contributors
include: In other news, Edo van Belkom has a busy promotional schedule set for October with special events already set and several more still pending. On Saturday Morning, October 26th, Edo will be doing nine 30-second spots on WUTV Fox 29 in Buffalo talking about things like safety tips for trick or treaters, the history of Halloween, favorite books and movies, and ghost stories of Western New York. On Sunday, October 27th, Edo will appear on the WUTV local affairs show PULSE, talking about Halloween, horror and his new book BE VERY AFRAID! On Wednesday October 30th, he'll be featured on TVOntario's IMPRINT in a segment on werewolves. He'll also appear later in the year talking on the subject of author's photos... Also on October 30th, Edo's short story "The BIG Brampton Pumpkin" will will appear in THE BRAMPTON GUARDIAN, which will be having a contest for readers to win one of five copies of BE VERY AFRAID! KEALAN-PATRICK
BURKE MAKES A GOTHIC GRAB Burke says "I cannot hope to fill the shoes of such a respected writer/editor," and small wonder, as Seth is nearly 7 feet tall! Kealan-Patrick first got attention (knocked everyone on their ass) with his upcoming anthology, TAVERNS OF THE DEAD: He got Stephen King to contribute. When asked how he did it, Kealan said, "I asked." No comment has come from the King camp, whose house outside of Bangor, Maine is now buried under 4 stories of requests from anyone who so much as lives near a Kinko's. Kealan-Patrick will also release BRIMSTONE TURNPIKE, a five novella anthology featuring stories from feoamante.com contributors like Mike Oliveri and Harry Shannon. Both anthos will be released by Cemetery Dance Publications. Gothic.net
is pretty much a pay-site and Kealan-Patrick hopes to get us to part with
our moola by offering us stories from folks like Gary A. Braunbeck and
Poppy Z. Brite. October also brings in Gothic.net's
new look, which couldn't come early enough as the look for 2001-2002 was/is
ugly as a crap cadaver! Not like the look they had in 2000-2001 (their
Tim Burton/Jhonen Vasquez period), 1999-2000 (their
Circus period), or 1998-1999 (their goth-Egyptian
period). Sigh! Those were the days!

SEPTEMBER 13 THE HORROR
OF HORROR PUBLISHING Here is an edited version of the letter he sent out to his writers. "These past few months have been very troublesome months for Delirium Books and it's finally time to address these problems. This is no doubt one of the hardest decisions I've had to make, but I feel it needs to be done. I've decided to cut back on titles by canceling or postponing 80% of Delirium's forthcoming titles." Shane went
on to explain that a water pipe broke sometime after he left Delirium
and spent the rest of the night flooding the publishing office with about
3 to 5 inches of water. The pressure was so great as to peel the paint
off the wall where the water hit. The cause is a mystery as the office
is only 5 years old. Among the
items damaged was the original art paintings and Delirium's complete inventory
of in-house paperback books (Limited Editions were
kept in a separate place and were not affected). Due to recent
escrow payment changes, Insurance was raised $800.00 and it was while
Shane was shopping and between insurance companies that disaster struck. With other
things that have happened this year, the water damage and subsequent loss
of stock is the third strike against Shane and Delirium. Strike one was
Canadian Customs breaking the Corrosion Award sculpture by artist Robert
Blair into leetle beety peeces before passing it on to Shane. Of course,
since its a government job, no one is responsible to you or anyone else
for their job or how they do it. Shane apologized profusely in his email and finished with these words. "My final statement on this is that Delirium WILL NOT cease business. I've worked too hard and those of you who know me have discovered that I have a passion for this field and I will continue to work hard and rebuild Delirium to and beyond it's current status as a contender in the horror specialty press market. This is a mere setback unfortunately one that will effect you (my authors and artists) as well as myself. Thanks to all of you." Among the cancellations is the much anticipated DEAD INN 2. We wish Shane
better luck in the future.

Meanwhile, just a little south in sunny California (Burbank to be specific!), Del and Sue Howison at Dark Delicacies will welcome Cody Goodfellow signing his book RADIANT DAWN, Joe Nassise putting pen to page on SPECTRES and DARKNESS: AN ANTHOLOGY, Wrath James White (reviewer and interviewer here at Feo Amante!) signing BROKEN, TWISTED GORESOAKED TALES OF SEX, DEATH, AND PAIN, Maria Alexander scribing witty things in her poetry book BITING MIDNIGHT: A DARKSOME FEAST OF IMMORTAL VERSE, and Harry Shannon (reviewer and interviewer here at Feo Amante!) making his mark on his NIGHT OF THE BEAST. "This new trade paperback contains all of the original hardback plus an extra chapter about his book tour last year." Saturday, August 24, it's back to Oklahoma and this time to Oklahoma City itself as Brian A. Hopkins, Steven Wedel, and Jason Light push their newly published stories in several novels and collections at Full Circle Books (across from Penn Square Mall), beginning at 2 p.m.
AUGUST 5 KEENE
SPEAK Well now theres good news! "Fodder" will appear as the lead story in SHIVERS, an all-new horror anthology from Cemetery Dance Publications. SHIVERS makes its debut at the Second Annual Horrorfind Weekend this month, and also features fiction from Bentley Little, Graham Masterton, Edward Lee, Tom Piccirilli, John Pelan, Geoff Cooper, Brian Freeman, and dozens more. In other news, "Crimson Cross", a short story Brian co-wrote with imprisoned horror writer and his long-time pal James Speelman, will be reprinted in the first issue of NIGHT SHOPPING, a new horror magazine. By Brian
Keene The Imaginary Worlds version of NO REST FOR THE WICKED was released in three editions: Limited Edition Hardcover, Hardcover, and Trade Paperback. All of them had an ISBN# of 91-973949-1-2 (and having the same ISBN for all three editions became a nightmare for bookstores and distributors). The only difference between the Limited and the Standard Hardcover was the signature sheet. That's it. Originally, the Limited was supposed to be a print run of 200 copies. I won't rehash the Imaginary Worlds saga here, as it serves no purpose and pretty much everybody is aware of what happened. Suffice to say, I know of 50 copies in existence. Nobody knows how many copies of the standard hardcover and paperback actually got printed. I personally know of 50 each. So 50 + 50 + 50 = 150 copies total (and I'm 99.9% certain the other ones were never printed. Last I heard, they were being shipped overnight from Sweden. That was two years ago). Vox 13 brought out the trade paperback of NO REST FOR THE WICKED REDUX. The ISBN# for that is 1-93059-511-5. The print run was several thousand. It sold out last month from the publisher, and the print run has ended. At one point, Vox 13 was going to do both a hardcover and a Lettered edition, but we came to the mutual agreement not to do those. So once REDUX is gone from various bookstores, there will be no further editions of NO REST. Lately there have been rumors of an e-book version, and even a mass-market version. Let me say right now that there will be not be. Although I am proud of NO REST, the stories in the book represent an earlier time. I feel that I am much stronger as a writer now, and it wouldn't serve my career or the readers to continue to make those stories readily available. |

J. O'Rourke Ketchum's amassed quite a loyal following, and justifiably so. Even Stephen King says, "Ketchum has become a kind of hero to those of us who write tales of terror and suspense. He is, quite simply, one of the best in the business." You going to argue with Stephen King? DIXON PLACE at the VINEYARD is located at 309 E. 26th Street. There will be a $6 charge to help support Dixon Place's "Summer HOT Festival". Confused?
Just want more info? Check out Dixon Place's website: dixonplace.org/ Report by Monica J. O'Rourke WITH A TITLE LIKE THIS, COULD MAKE A GOOD MOVIE! Bram Stoker Award-winning writer and editor Brian A. Hopkins shared some good news with us recently: his long-awaited novella, EL DIA DE LOS MUERTOS, is gathering some terrific pre-release buzz. Ed Gorman, author of The Dark Fantastic, was recently quoted as saying: "Brian Hopkins' novella reads like a fusion of Malcolm Lowry's Under the Volcano and some early Paul Bowles added to make things even grimmer. This is a hallucinatory portrait of a search through several levels of hell as both a physical and spiritual reality. You come away clawed and poisoned by it. You sure as hell will never forget it. A powerful, serious and excellent piece of work." El Dia De Los Muertos is expected to be released this October, In addition, Brian's short story, "Lost Things", can be found in the soon-to-be-released anthology, Songs from Dead Singers (Catalyst Press). J. O'Rourke Merz seems to want to help aspiring authors, perhaps warn them of the travails ahead. Along for the ride is Joseph M. Nassise, an author who knows a thing or two about the long road to publishing. His own small-press venture, RIVERWATCH, recently sold to Pocket Books. Nassise was a 2001 Bram Stoker-award nominee and he's written an introduction for Merz's e-book, in which he says, "What you hold in your hands is . . . a roadmap. A roadmap that traces the route one eager new writer named Jon Merz traveled in that bewildering maze known as the publishing process." To download

J. O'Rourke While we're on the subject of Terrorscribes, they have a contest running called The Supreme Terrorscribe Contest 2002. That title alone kind of makes you feel humble, doesn't it? Terrorscribes calls it " the most exciting contest the horror genre has ever produced online and can be found only at the UK's biggest horror web site Terror Tales." One person will be voted Supreme Terrorscribe of 2002 and will be awarded the Samuel Bonehead Trophy by John B. Ford and Paul Kane in Birmingham at the Britannia Hotel on September 7th. (I guess they'll break from one of their wild parties to give out this award.) Should the winner be from the other side of the pond, the Samuel Bonehead prize will be sent via airmail, so the winner should see it anywhere from 2 weeks to 4 years. Of course you don't get to keep the trophy. You hang on to it for a year and then pass it to the next Bonehead Supreme Terrorscribe. There are cash prizes as well, plus promises of publication, so don't feel too bad if you have to return the trophy.

J. O'Rourke Savory has been working on several projects, including collaborations with authors Tim Lebbon (WHITE, AS THE SUN GOES DOWN) and China Miéville (PERDIDO STREET STATION, THE SCAR). Savorys novelization of his long story THE DISTANCE TRAVELLED will include a Miéville-inspired character named Tom China, who is, according to Savory, Real evil, but a bit of a dullard. Visit Bretts

May's pick
was Perfume by Patrick Susskind. Perfume is described as the gruesome,
picaresque allegory of an olfactory genius-monster - a murderous perfumer
of decadent eighteenth-century France. June's selection: The Power of One by Bryce Courtenay, which came with a glowing endorsement by Clegg: "It is one of the purest storytelling experiences I've ever encountered - a first novel set in South Africa around the time of World War II, about a boy growing to manhood. I find that some of my favorite novels are centered around an unforgettable character. This is NOT a horror novel, at least not in the usual terms. As I stated before, this is not a horror book club, but is my book club - which means, I pick 'em as I love 'em. No one influences these picks, and if you're only into reading one genre of fiction, you won't enjoy the variety in this book club." Doug's pick for July? "This one's by my friend MJ Rose - whose fiction I discovered with In Fidelity. The new one is called Flesh Tones, and it's a tale of erotic obsession, murder, and well, it's a page-turner. Cosmo named it one of its sexy summer reads. And it is. It's NOT a horror novel - but as I've said before, with the Book Club, I'm picking books that I've enjoyed in any and all genres." Other recommendations, although not Book Club selections, include Terrence Cheng's Sons of Heaven, and Christopher Golden's The Ferryman. To subscribe

JULY 4 HORRORWORLD
GETS THE MESSAGE Stephen Gresham has had more than a dozen horror novels published since the mid 1980's and his books include DEMON'S EYE and THE LIVING DARK. Jon F. Merz is the author of a new vampire series (beginning with THE FIXER) published by Pinnacle and among Katherine Ramsland's many books are biographies of Anne Rice and Dean Koontz. Her debut horror novel is due later this year. Horror World now has almost 40 author message boards in operation for authors currently or previously published in the mass market along with a further 30 for general discussion and authors / publishers working in the independent presses. THE DEATH
OF DARKTALES David Nordhaus, Keith Herber, and Nick Kaufmann were the amazing team that ran the show at DarkTales, and Dave says he'll continue to maintain the website and the e-list. Like JF Gonzales (author of CLICKERS and MATERNAL INSTINCT) says, "[Darktales] helped launch the careers of over half a dozen writers, and [they've] developed a blueprint other presses are following." The demise of DarkTales Publications leaves a gaping hole in the world of small-press horror publishing, and they will be sorely missed.
JULY 1 THE BRITISH
ARE COMING (Because here we don't ban their books) And now he's back, taking pot shots at the USofA in his new novel UNITED STATES, being called a grim tale of personal humiliation and social disease. Available now from Eraserhead Press. For more information on this twisted soul, visit his website: hertzanchimera.com. ANONYMOUS
NEMONYMOUS The concept behind Nemonymous is that writers who are accepted for an issue are published anonymously, their true identity not revealed until the subsequent issue. Lewis further says, "Readers, judging by reactions, have found this method revelatory and (surprisingly?) effective. The actual style and format are ground-breaking, too, in my view." Issue number two has just been released. Visit the announcement-list, or visit the Nemonymous website for ordering and submissions information. |

JUNE 28 AURORA
FOR EDO? It's the second honor for TEETH as earlier this year the trade publication SF CHRONICLE named TEETH one of the 20 best horror novels of 2001. Edo van Belkom won an Aurora Award in 1999 for his short story "Hockey's Night In Canada" and has also won a Bram Stoker Award from the Horror Writers Association. Since TEETH was published in the spring of 2001, van Belkom has followed it up with the short story collection SIX-INCH SPIKES, and a new novel MARTYRS, which is also set in Canada at a fictitious Jesuit College in Northern Ontario. Upcoming books include the young-adult horror anthology BE VERY AFRAID! (Tundra Books) in October 2002, and a new mass-market horror novel SCREAM QUEEN (Kensington Books) in March 2003. JUNE 18 BRIAN
STOKER "I'm in pretty good company," Brian said after the banquet. "It feels real incredible." The year before, Stephen King's On Writing won the Non-Fiction award. Brian believes the state of horror is in a good place, and his optimism is infectious. "In the past four years, Jobs in Hell subscribers have been exposed to over 900 different markets for horror. 900! Now is a great time to be a horror writer! We're back and healthier than ever." Part of his acceptance speech, the crowd reacted favorably. Keene was clearly a favorite at the awards ceremony. Keene recently negotiated a mass market paperback deal for his novel More Than Infinity and wants to devote more time to his writing career. Most surprising was his decision to retire from Jobs in Hell and turn over leadership to Kelly Laymon (editor, Excitable Boys). At the Stoker banquet, Keene said," It's been four years. In two weeks, I'll be retiring from Jobs in Hell. But I have no fears and no regrets, because I leave Jobs in Hell in the very capable hands of Kelly Laymon. And I think the only thing that could make me prouder than winning this fine award here tonight, is watching the new heights Jobs in Hell will reach under her guidance." For more

JUNE 17 SCI FI
CHANNEL GETS AUTOGRAPHED COPIES OF RICHARD MATHESON'S TWILIGHT ZONE SCRIPTS Gauntlet publisher Barry Hoffman said, "Although Matheson takes part in few signings, he was more than happy to sign the Twilight Zone Scripts for the SCI FI Channel. He is hoping the marathon and the giveaway will attract much deserved attention to this classic television series and this affordable edition of his book". Richard Matheson will also be participating in an online chat on Thursday, June 20th at 9 p.m. EST on the SCI FI website (scifi.com). He will be answering questions from fans regarding his contribution to "The Twilight Zone" series. Details regarding both volumes can be found at the Gauntlet Press at gauntletpress.com. Probably the biggest and weirdest issue about the Stokers this year is the utter lack of any winners for Illustrated Narrative. Even Illustrated Narratives in Horror that were good enough to be nominated for the coveted Eisner and Kurtzman Awards (awards in the comics industry) did not find favor with the Stoker Award voters. And yet a veritable treasure trove of Horror and Dark Fantasy titles were released in 2001 including: BLACK HOLE:
Charles Burns Other Horror

FOR A COLD TOUCH This new 82,000-word paperback anthology includes original stories by T.M. Wright, Al Sarrantonio, Barry Hoffman, Tim Lebbon, Brian A. Hopkins, John Pelan, Paul Finch, Kurt Newton, William P. Simmons, James S. Dorr, Maynard & Sims, Paul Lewis, Rebecca M Senese, Steve Lockley, Greg F. Gifune, Scott Nicholson, James Doig, Derek M. Fox, and Steve Redwood. A new anthology of quality fiction, each story original. In COLD TOUCH, masters of quiet horror provide stories that hint at the terrible and threatening while never quite revealing the source of discomfort. Top writers give us the harmony of the primal mystery with the recognizably macabre. Also from Maynard and Sims this month, INCANTATIONS, a new short story collection by Prime Books. If you think of these two writers simply in terms of traditional ghost stories - then think again - these stories are nightmares from a cracked modern landscape. From Monica
J. O'Rourke "John Platt is well known for his unique mix of humor and horror. His short stories have appeared in numerous magazines and anthologies, and he's started to gather quite a following" said Medium Rare Books publisher John Turi, "We're extremely pleased to be publishing his first book." "Die Laughing" includes over thirty humorous short stories and poems. More than half of the collection is new material. Other stories were originally published in magazines like Satire, Gothic.net and Strange Horizons. Three stories reprinted in the book have already earned Honorable Mentions in various editions of The Year's Best Fantasy & Horror (St. Martin's Press). John R. Platt is the award-winning author of over fifty published short stories. Pulp Eternity magazine named him one of the top ten writers publishing fiction on the Internet in 1999. Platt served three years as President of the Garden State Horror Writers, and has also written for comic books, newspapers, magazines and radio.

WOMEN WHO KILL analyzes the childhood formation and adult experiences of female *serial killers,* and a remoreless bunch they are, too. Publishers Weekly said: "Despite ample psychological discussion (e.g. of criminal types with names like "Profit Killer" or "Angel of Death"), this book is more Grand Guignol than academic...." And now WOMEN WHO KILL has just been released in paperback by Allison & Busby (May in Britain and June in the USA). just in time to drag to the beach! MAY 30 THE DECADENT - RISE!
MAY 27 Interview
by Harry
Shannon Harry Shannon interviews ED GORMAN.
NEWS FROM THE GRAVE MAN Tom's also just signed contracts with NightShade Books whoâ'll be publishing his next novel A CHOIR OF ILL CHILDREN in hardback. Also out soon from the Cemetery Dance Novella line is CAST IN DARK WATERS. This is a strange action-adventure-horror piece co-written with Ed Gorman. It tells the story of a female pirate in the early 18th Century who is haunted by her dead husband as she seeks to save a young woman trapped on an island where demons supposedly roam. Despite its pulpish elements, this one is actually played pretty straight and is full of Caribbean myths and lore, along with a historical edge. Keep up with Tom at his official website:Epitaphs.
MAY 17 PELAN
GOES BIG TIME! The other anthology is the paperback DARKER SIDE. it features feoamante.com contributor Brian Keene (and in his story - on page 303, the bastard gives a shout out to yours truly! HA! Cronism lives!) as well as Seth Lindberg, Brian A. Hopkins, Tom Piccirilli, Michelle Scalise, and Simon Clark. Stories by Richard Laymon and Caitlan R. Kiernan appear in both books.

MAY 10 From
John Urbancik On Memorial Day weekend (May 24-26), I'll be a guest at OASIS, in Orlando. Specifically, you'll find me on such panels as SCARED HORROR WRITERS?, and you can catch me reading Sunday afternoon at 3pm (with friend and fellow horror author Chris Kosarich). Then, I'll be signing at the Barnes & Noble in the Oveido Marketplace, Saturday June 15, 2pm-5pm. If you're local, I hope you can at least support me by showing up. If it goes bad, I may try to slip across the mall and catch a movie, but please don't make me have to think about that. From
Judi
Rohrig Said Conner: "This is my first public comment on the matter, although many people have been told privately..." Twilight Showcase will indeed be ending a four-year run in the Fall. Issue thirty-two (mid-August) will be the last issue. "Last summer, I left my previous career to pursue a full-time writing career. I've been going hard at that, but I found that TS was occupying too much of my time. When I considered that I'd also been doing this for four years (and that we were *monthly* for almost three years), I realized that I'd put just about all the time I could afford into the zine. "I grant you, it was still not an easy decision. I've been honored to work with a vast array of amazingly talented people, and I've made a lot of great friends over the years. I'm sure that I'll continue contact with all those fine people in one regard or another long after TS is gone. We published some great work, we won an award or two, and we got looked at for others. The bottom line is that I haven't a single regret - how could I? "All that said, I'll reiterate that we still have two more issues to publish - and they're *phenomenal* issues with some top-notch work. So I'd ask our readers to stick around a while longer, to let us dazzle you a couple more times." "Dazzle" was an appropriate word. Twilight Showcase will be missed. Sorely.
AS OFFENSIVE AS THEY WANNA BE Mike Philbin aka Hertzan Chimera writes stuff so obscene that he would likely be ignored were it not for the fact that he can actually Write and write Well. As it is, he is merely reviled. He is also a shameless self-promotor. He wrote to tell us: "For those unaware, SKIMMING THE GUMBO NUCLEAR author MF Korn and "SZMONHFU" author Hertzan Chimera have teamed up many times to write collaborative stories with the likes of DF Lewis and Dave Mathews, but it took a lonnnnng while for the odd couple to pair up and examine each other's twisted viewpoint. The result of their symbiosis has been snapped up by the ever-astute APOCALYPSE FICTION MAGAZINE, voted "the coolest zine since the advent of the 'net'... " by HEAVY METAL (Adult Illustrated Fantasy Magazine)." "FUCK STAR" will run for twelve consecutive issues. One new episode per issue of WEIRD SPACE - a brand new section of the A.F.M. created to accommodate the twelve very ADULT tales of the "FUCK STAR" series. But what is Fuck Star? What should the reader expect? According
to Mike Philbin: "If you read horror or science fiction on a regular
basis, you are not ready for this. Beyond overlit porno-droid fucks of
twisted insanity. The entire universe is plugged in via a ten-way broadband
connection to our anti-hero, Eli-X. He is a permanent hard-on combat fuck
doll of the next sexual revolution when man has conquered only the stars
and the space between man's ears is still the next big battle ground.
You will come to love Eli-X. Women will send him fanmail to his possible
future. Men will look to the stars with envious eyes. The reader will
undoubtedly hate his parents, his owners, his torturous love affairs,
will detest his clichéd scripts." Check it out at apocalypsefiction.com

APRIL 1 From Shane
Ryan Staley Gary and I used to work in the same factory and we quickly formed a friendship. He loved baseball and horror and, before the end of his life this past week, had bought every Delirium title. He was a fan of Houarner and Laimo and raved about 4 x 4 when it was released this past fall. He collected each of his Delirium books and cherished them. We talked about Delirium's authors for hours while on the shop floor or nights after work. Gary was a Vietnam vet - he witnessed true terror firsthand. He had often said that being in 'Nam was probably the reason he was drawn to the genre. This week, J. F. Gonzalez's MATERNAL INSTINCT was released. Gary's copy, which he was anxiously awaiting on, remains on my desk along with his obituary. He will be greatly missed here as a supporter of my work and of Delirium Books, but, most of all, as the great friend that he has been to me for over the past 6 years. From Michael T. Huyck and Judi Rohrig STOKER AWARDS! THE FINAL NOMINATIONS ARE IN (but first, a wrenching editorial diatribe -feo) AND THIS SITE DIDN'T MAKE THE FINAL CUT! So I've decided to walk the true path of the sniveler! I will berate the entire Stoker nominating board, policies, hierarchy, and all and sundry even remotely connected with it. I will do this on message boards throughout the web! Furthermore, I will make general mass appeals for revolution in letters to editors (who, of course, are far too internecine minded to accept my brilliant stories). I will also display my poor grasp of the English language. I will do this all anonymously: ostensibly so that I can encourage discussion of my diatribes while avoiding the hero worship that would surely come my way if only the proletariat knew who I be (in accutality though, because I have taken the true path of the sniveler - which is also one of cowardice). BUT LO! I have already forseen the destiny of my actions! Many will come to huddle under my frail umbrella as we first create, then hide from our storm. As the tide of opinion eventually turns against us (and all is totally ignored by those who are far too busy writing and otherwise actually PURSUING their chosen career), we will bravely (though anonymously) backpedal and claim that we meant no offense to anyone, but were merely trying to encourage discusssion on the subject. We will taper off with a few more snide remarks to save our anonymous faces (just in case someone figured out who we really are) and go back to writing our pathetic scribbles, stout hearted in the notion that our, and more to the point, MY, true genius won't be appreciated until after my death. Just like what's-her-name- that American poet. So with a
throat full of sour bile, let me go down the list of folks who have made
the final cut. These works are officially “nominated” for superior achievement in their respective categories and the authors and editors listed have earned the right to refer to themselves as “Stoker Nominated.” The ballots are out as of today. MARCH 29 MATHESON'S
PAST MASTERS Originally published in a limited edition of only 1250 copies by Dream/Press in 1989, the massive collection has never been reprinted. EDGE Books an imprint of Gauntlet Press intends for the new edition (previously titled simply Collected Stories) to follow Richard Matheson's "The Twilight Zone" Scripts (also edited by Wiater), which was published in two volumes to great acclaim in 2001 and 2002. Each story will be followed by new and exclusive commentary by Matheson and Wiater. From the original edition, we will include the author's very candid Introduction, as well as the nine tributes by such legendary writers as Ray Bradbury, Robert Bloch, Harlan Ellison, and Stephen King.
MARCH 19 LITTLE BITS

Rohrig REVIEW REVIEW - Like mazes and puzzles? Then perhaps Claude Lalumière's carefully crafted and imaginatively annotated review of Jeff VanderMeer's CITY OF SAINTS & MADMEN (Prime) will sate that part of you. Just follow the yellow brick road to that Land of Oz called Locus Online. Personally, I found the artsy form - while interesting and clever - too distracting for what it was attempting to accomplish, and as I think back on all the words, I'm reminded of a line in the film Amadeus: "Too many notes!" (I also can't remember one darmed thing about Jeff's book!)
MARCH 18 REPAIRMAN
JACK ATTACK! The Gauntlet edition has cover art by Harry O. Morris (approved by the author). the traycased lettered edition has two additional Harry Morris interiors. Both editions of the book come with a FREE chapbook with noted interviewer William Simmons interviewing F. Paul Wilson about Repairman Jack. Simmons' interviews are always incisive and illuminating. This should prove of interest to both new and old fans of Repairman Jack. Publication in late-May or early-June.

However, GOTHICA: Romance of the Immortals will be judged differently by G.A.Y.A's system to award an author is intense and the merits come by way of a rating or point system. The second, as yet untitled novel, will be delivered to Kensington in February of 2003 for publication later in the year, or early in 2004. This marks the first time a novel by Edo will be available in the mass-market format since his Dragonlance fantasy novel LORD SOTH was published in November 1997. Edo's last two horror novels, TEETH (selected by SF CHRONICLE as one of the best horror novels of 2001), and MARTYRS, were both published as trade paperbacks. But before SCREAM QUEEN is on bookstore shelves across North America, Edo's second young adult horror anthology, BE VERY AFRAID! STEPHEN
KING SAYS HE WILL RETIRE, AGAIN The money says he won't, but consider: For a writer as prolific as King, simply willing oneself to - just - stop can't be that easy. Especially at Stephen's age where the urge to write has probably become a Jones. Even Stephen is beginning to see where he's just repeating himself (look for his upcoming novel, FROM A BUICK 8, about a car that goes ape-shit). I've been saying that about him for years, as anyone who has read 4 PAST MIDNIGHT (a collection of four short novels) can see the parallels between his short novel THE LIBRARY POLICEMAN and IT as well as his short SECRET WINDOW, SECRET GARDEN and his full length novel, THE DARK HALF. Even King says he doesn't want to become a parody of himself, though many fans have been saying that about him for years now. When you're as big as The King, though, disappointed old fans who were there from the beginning are easily replaced by excited new fans who have just discovered you. Let's be honest, how many women ten and twenty years ago, imagined that they were carrying to term and delivering through pain into this world, another Stephen King fan? Steve is still a human being after all and having such a thing to contemplate must be, for better or worse, a mind f*cker! Personally, I think Stephen is serious about this one. I think he's going to wean himself away from the writing monkey over the next few years. I can easily see him getting more involved with the movie, television, and other forms of media outlets that pay conjugal visits to his vast library of tales. During his lifetime, King has wrote stories that I love, hate, and love to hate. I've paid no small fortune for the privilege of reading King, with both my money and my time. Just as often though, a magazine was borrowed or a book was lent by the local public library - it was life still spent - often well spent - reading through his mind. The tales that captured my imagination were the ones I bought to read again. And again. So for all the years and all the worlds, "Thanks, Stephen!"

JANUARY 28 Report
by Judi
Rohrig According to an article at Lancaster Online: "The safety detail is unfilled because eight members of Penryn fire police voted unanimously to boycott the event after accusing YMCA of promoting witchcraft by reading Harry Potter books to children." (Oh, oh!) YMCA executive director Michael Carr maintains that the YMCA is "a value-based organization" that respects "Christian heritage," and he disputed any claims that his organization promotes witchcraft. "There is no teaching of things that are inappropriate here," he said. "Harry Potter is just one of our books that (the kids) read." Parental approval is also given. Responding to this action in the community where he lives, writer and illustrator, Timothy Truman (ATOMIC CHILI, JONAH HEX, STAR WARS comics, among others) has submitted this letter to the editor of the Lancaster Sunday paper: "In regards to the Penryn Fire Police and and their refusal to serve as traffic controllers for this year's YMCA Triathlon due to the YMCA's use of the Harry Potter fantasies in their children's programming, perhaps a name change is in order: the Penryn Department of Vice And Virtue. This might be a more appropriate designation for the company in their attempts to keep their dark, narrow little world safe from the awful forces of Imagination and Literacy." A few years ago, Truman and Texas writer Joe R. Lansdale successfully tangled with a free speech issue in a suit brought by the Winter Brothers. The Comic Book legal Defense Fund and attorney / author Andrew Vachss also participated in the drawn-out scuffle. Since that time, Truman has been an outspoken proponent of free speech issues. Rohrig Becky is a first-generation Twilight Tales regular, so this will be a grand homecoming you won't want to miss! Rob will share something from his DIRTY OLD TOWN: Tales of New York City and other magical places. Then on Monday, January 28, Bill McMahon is on tap with "Fully Adjustable at all Five Levels," dark science fiction in an experimental form, followed by Richard Chwedyk who will read from "The Story You've All Been Waiting For - A Milton Howitzer Production." Again, everything starts at 7:30 p.m., upstairs at the Red Lion (just across the street from the historic Biograph Theatre). HIGHS AND LOWS AT STEALTH PRESS The good news is signings by Clive Barker, of Clive's BOOKS OF BLOOD are setting records at bookstores. His December 8 signing at Dark Delicacies in Burbank, California was the Best Single Day total of any book ever sold there. What's more, it was also the Most Copies of a single selling title ever. So Clive has still got it. Stealth Press has also got kudos from the January 2002 issue of LIBRARY JOURNAL, where Michael Rogers cited six "Best Reprints of 2001." Stealth's NEBULA AWARD STORIES series (from 1965, 1966, and 1967, respectively) were among those chosen. On the down side, Stealth Press has been impacted by a sluggish economy from both a sales perspective and in the area of raising capital. As a result, they have reduced staff and stretched out their publishing schedule. Some previous publication dates for previously announced first quarter titles have, as yet, not been reassigned new dates. Onepotentially popular title, DREAMER OF DUNE, by Frank Herbert has been cancelled completely. Also, Stealth is discontinuing international shipping direct from the Web site (except to Canada). Go to Stealth Press for complete information.

BURBANK! On Saturday, January 19, at 2:00 p.m. WHOA! TOTO,
WE'RE NOT IN BURBANK ANYMORE! CITY OF LOVE!
TWO IF BY SEA; MANY IF BY MARYLAND! An all-out extravaganza is being planned at Borders in the Annapolis Mall for Sunday, January 27. At 1:00 p.m. author, editor, and Feo Amante's own Brian Keene will be signing new books along with J.F. Gonzales, Karen E. Taylor, and a few more who are being added even as we go to web. Best place to check for updates is briankeene.com. LOOK! A HEAD! NO, IT'S LOOKING AHEAD! NEW YORK! Circle that calendar for Saturday, February 2, as the city with a tremendously big heart continues revealing that part of itself. At 8:00 p.m. on that date, Stephen King, John Grisham, Pat Conroy, and Peter Straub will join together at Town Hall, a 1,500-seat performance hall located at 123 West 43rd (between 6th and 7th Avenues), to offer readings and reflections in a performance to benefit Frank Muller. The familiar voice for these and other authors on books on tape, Muller was in a horrible motorcycle accident last November. Since that time, Muller's made some strides toward recovery, but he still has a long way to go. His medical bills have been enormous, and the family's (his wife is expecting their second child in July) daily living expenses are mounting without his continuing income. Ticket prices will be $100, $75 and $50. The performance will be taped, and the audio recording will be made available for purchase. If you would like to reserve tickets for the benefit performance, please send an email to mullerbenefit@aol.com. For more information, check the website: bitchen.com/muller/details.html. MINNEAPOLIS! CARRION WAY author Dan Simmons will be the guest at Dreamhaven Books, 912 West Lake Street, on Tuesday, February 26, at 6:30 p.m. He'll be there to promote his upcoming book, A WINTER HAUNTING. GET DECADENT For future volumes of Decadence, Monica is looking for cutting edge erotic horror stories. The erotica can be subtle, or over-the-top, or anywhere in-between, but the stories must be horrific. No science fiction. Fantasy, as long as it’s dark - no sword and sorcery, or gnomes, or creatures of that ilk. Submit well-crafted, professionally formatted stories between 1k and 7k. Monica says: "I’m not going to waste space describing what a professionally formatted ms looks like; there are plenty of good books on the market that can teach you this fine art. Contact info MUST be on the manuscript - name, title, email addy - and not just in the email. RTF attachments ONLY. No text, no imbedding in the body of the email. Ick. Original stories only - query if you have a reprint you absolutely must send my way. Payment will be a copy of the anthology plus an equal share of royalties.
