A FINE, DARK READING
Who else better to tell a coming-of-age story set in the late 1950s than Joe R. Lansdale? In January, Warner Books will be releasing A FINE DARK LINE, a book Kirkus reviews calls: "Funny, scary, heartwarming, heart-pounding, Tom Sawyer-ish, Huck Finn-ish, provocative, evocative, sometimes actually wise..."

Of course, the second best thing (besides writing) that Joe does is read. And that's what he'll be doing in January at at least three locations.

On Wednesday, January 8, Book People in Austin, TX, will be hosting a reading.

On Thursday, January 9, the Barnes & Noble in Webster, TX, welcomes the Mojo writer.

Then on Thursday, January 14, Murder by the Book in Houston, TX, will play host as Joe holds court. If you are near any of those places, please consider this a personal invitation to mosey over and enjoy enjoy enjoy!

DEON SANDERS WRITES SOUTHERN HORROR!
No, not THAT Deon Sanders. This is Deon C. Sanders and he hails from Chicago, Il. USA. He calls himself "The New Face of Horror" (I always imagined the "face of Horror" to be rather bony and covered with rotting flesh, but hey - if that's your face, wear it proudly! You don't have much choice!) and is proud to announce the publication of his new horror novel MISS MARY WEATHER: A Southern Nightmare.

He goes on to say "The novel is definitely the Horror Novel of the Century." Admirable hubris indeed! According to his press release: "As a freshman horror author in the publishing world. The New Face of Horror, Deon C. Sanders, a father of six, is on his way to writing numerous bestselling horror novels, inspiring poems, and feature film screenplays. However, his passion is horror writing. His first horror novel “Miss Mary Weather: A Southern Nightmare” has been a success in the minds of horror readers and has been well received in Chicago and in other major city bookstores. MISS MARY WEATHER: A Southern Nightmare (ISBN# 158851837X) is also available in book stores now and online.

His next completed horror novel is titled I,AM-
In the midst of good, there’s evil,
In the midst of evil, there’s “I,AM”

MISS MARY WEATHER: A SOUTHERN NIGHTMARE takes place in a rural black community in the deep South, where there is a myth of a woman who is the most terrifying female creature ever unleashed in this world.

Random Acts of WeirdnessRANDOM ACTS OF WEIRDNESS HITS THE STREETS
It was first supposed to come out in April of 2002 at the World Horror Convention - but the publisher dropped it and a new one stepped in. Then it was supposed to be released in August at the Horrorfind convention - but there was a gross printing error. Then it was supposed to be released in September - make that October - er... anybody up for November?

Finally, FINALLY, Catalyst Press has proudly (if exhaustedly) announced the release of editor Brian Knight's RANDOM ACTS OF WEIRDNESS.

It seems like adversity large or small brings people together. It was back in early 2001 when my story WHAT'S WRONG WITH MILDRED was accepted by editor Brian Knight for Random Acts of Weirdness. Through the months, there came changes. First this was changed, then that was changed, Brian kept in touch with all of his contributors - which included a number of artists as well. His publisher finally dropped the whole thing and Brian had to go a-hunting. During this time, I had become friends with another editor, Monica O'Rourke, who had accepted my story, SOME PEOPLE, for publication in HER new anthology, DECADENCE. As time passed we kept in constant contact. There were ups and downs. Finally, a reputable publisher was found in the form of Monica J. O'Rourke, who had started writing columns for me by that time. Monica decided, in 2002, to try her hand at publishing. One of the first books she accepted was RAW. But trials and tribulations prevailed and somewhen, while all of that was going on, both Monica and Brian volunteered to take over the sections of feoamante.com, Story Time and Shadow Music, respectively.

Shouldn't I have been mad at these two? They jerked me and many other writers and artists around on this damn anthology for over a year!

Nope. I know too well how difficult it is to start out, and how easily a promise made can be broken due to unforseen circumstances. Instead I applaud these two because they made a commitment and kept pushing forward against great odds to see it through.

Our Monica J. O'Rourke, publisher of Catalyst Press, said, "It was rough going for a while with (Random Acts Of Weirdness) - I started to think it was jinxed. But I never gave up on it because it has some fantastic stories, and I'm really proud to be the publisher of this anthology. I know readers are going to love it."

Our Brian Knight (Shadow Music), editor of the book, had this to say, "R.A.W. has been a long time coming, almost a year in the making - from its conceptual birth at WHC 2001 in Seattle to completion just before WHC 2002. Then it spent several months in editorial limbo, going from Prime Books to Catalyst Press. Further delays include a formatting problem that ruined the first print run. Thanks to the patience of the contributing authors and the diligence of Monica at Catalyst Press, R.A.W. has finally arrived. This book has a few well know authors in it (Kathryn Ptacek [GHOST DANCE] and Charlee Jacob [GUISES, Delirium Books], just to name two) and several who I'm sure will become well known.

I can honestly say R.A.W is the highlight of my humble editing career. I'm privileged to have worked with everyone involved."

In addition to Ptacek and Jacob, the anthology contains stories by authors whose published works include:
Weston Ochse (NATURAL SELECTION)
Gene O'Neill (THE BURDEN OF INDIGO, Prime Books),
E.C.McMullen Jr. (feoamante.com),
Brian Keene (THE RISING, Delirium Books) and Regina Mitchell,
David Whitman (HARLAN, Catalyst Press),
John Urbancik (SINS OF BLOOD AND STONE, Catalyst Press),
Sephera Giron (THE BIRDS AND THE BEES, Dorchester Publishing Company),
Gord Rollo (CRIMSON, Prime Books),
Michael T. Huyck Jr. (Book Reviewer, feoamante.com),
Sheri White (Columnist, Deviant Minds),
T.G. Arsenault (FORGOTTEN SOULS),
Diana Price,
Everette Bell (NYSTAGMUS, Blood Letters Press),
Donn Gash (columnist, Deviant Minds, Jobs In Hell),
Carlton Mellick III (SATAN BURGER),
Trent Zelazny (Music reviewer, feoamante.com),
Dennis Latham (MICHAEL IN HELL, Page Free Publishing)
Trace Edward Zaber (SINS OF THE FATHER, Amber Quill Press),
M.J. Euringer,
J. Newman (HOLY ROLLERS, Dark Tales),
Ed Cain (13 STORIES, Maximilian Press), and
Jack Fisher (FLESH & BLOOD magazine).

If there is some kind of an award for wildest damn cover art, then Book cover artist GAK (co-creator, DEAD CAT BOUNCE & DEAD CATS BOUNCING w/Gerard Houarner), just might get it. The cover design is by Feo Amante (Cover designer, DECADENCE 2, Flesh & Blood Press).

JUDI ROHRIG RESCUES HELLNOTES FROM THE GRAVE
Last week Garrett Peck reported that, due to a variety of circumstances, he was going to bring Hellnotes to an end after the February 1 issue. Not a single HellNote reader slammed him for it and many sent notes thanking him for the work he had done.

BUT HELLNOTES HAS ROSE FROM THE . . . well, not grave exactly. The corpse was still warm. but certainly ROSE FROM THE MORGUE! And saved by none other than our Judi Rohrig! Who Garrett Peck justifiably calls "an editor of vast talent and experience." Garrett went on to say

Those of you in HWA know what a terrific job Judi did during the year she was in charge of the HWA Internet Mailer (award winning work). In addition to that experience, Judi and her husband once ran a weekly newspaper, so she is well aware of the amount of time and work that goes into a weekly publication. The recipient of the first Richard Laymon Award for extraordinary service to the HWA, Judi is well connected to the genre and is an ideal choice to continue the Hellnotes tradition forged by David B. Silva and Paul F. Olson. I have every confidence that Judi will not only maintain the quality of Hellnotes, but is apt to improve it.

Garrett will edit HellNotes through January with Judi taking over in February.

HELLNOTES TO END ITS MUSIC IN 2003

GARRETT PECK

After less an a year at the keyboard, Hellnotes editor Garrett Peck announced in the latest issue that the weekly magazine would end its six-year run in February 2003.

Hellnotes first co-editors, David B. Silva and Paul F. Olson, established the magazine in 1997, hoping to "to publish a genre news source that would be comprehensive, timely and of value to writers and fans alike." They continued to produce weekly issues until the end of August, 2002.

Citing a number of reasons, among them refusing to cut payment of professional rates for his well-respected contributors - Brian Hodge, Kathy Ptacek, Hank Wagner, to name a few - and other financial crunches caused by lagging subscriptions and dwindling personal funds, Peck added his concern that cutting back staffing could allow the magazine to "represent one person's opinions." This he refused to do.

There is also the matter of Peck's own writing career which has suffered due to the demands of the weekly news sheet. "In a year in which I've received my first invitations to contribute to anthologies, my fiction writing has ground to a virtual halt," Peck said in his column. He has had stories appear in STORIES THAT WON'T MAKE YOUR PARENTS HURL and STONES as well as enjoying editorial responsibilities for both volumes of TOOTH & CLAW and last year's Bram Stoker nominated PERSONAL DEMONS.

Subscribers to Hellnotes will not be left out in the cold. Their subscriptions will be transferred to Jobs in Hell, another weekly e-zine edited by Kelly Laymon, daughter of the late horror writer, Richard Laymon. Jobs in Hell, recipient of the 2001 Bram Stoker Award, serves primarily as a marketing resource for horror writers. Since JiH does not run reviews, Peck says he will continue to offer those on an infrequent basis via email.

Peck also said: "Obviously, my decision to end Hellnotes did not come easily or without a great deal of regret and sadness. I was deeply honored that Dave and Paul trusted me to continue Hellnotes...."

He ended his editorial on a positive note: "But hey, let's not start the wake too soon. You've got a whole new issue to read and several more to come before the switch. There's plenty more coming your way, so stay tuned. If Hellnotes must end, I aim to see it go out in style."

EDITORIAL CHANGES FOR HORROR GARAGE MAGAZINE
Paula Guran will no longer edit the award-winning horror/music magazine HORROR GARAGE. An eccentric mix of indie-punk-garage music and original dark fiction, the periodical has been published for three years with Guran as editor. She was recently nominated for a World Fantasy award for the magazine. The recipient of an International Horror Guild Award for Best Publication for the Year 2000, Horror Garage featured fiction that had received critical acclaim. Interviews with and musicians, book and CD reviews, and a popular by Norman Partridge were typical of its content. The current issue, #6, is now being shipped. It is the last issue with which Guran is involved.

Assistant Editor Michele Patterson resigned after Guran's dismissal. Publisher Rich Black will take over all editorial duties. All unanswered submissions will be turned over to Black. No further submissions will be taken until new guidelines have been issued. Questions concerning submissions or guidelines should be directed to Black (horrorgarage@aol.com; 631.585.7471; POB 53, Neconset, NY 11767).

THE GEEK IS OUT AT REVOLUTION SF
Rick Klaw will be vacating his spot as fiction editor at Revolution SF effective December 31, 2002. RSF president Shane Ivey in his announcement also said: "Rick brought an amazing collection of stories to (the website). They have been surprising, unnerving, and fascinating, and they have been an integral part of our site."

Ivey added that Klaw will continue to contribute an occasional review or feature piece to RevolutionSF, but for the most part the award-winning editor will be concentrating his energies more fully on his own projects including publication of GEEK CONFIDENTIAL: ECHOES FROM THE 21ST CENTURY, a title to be published by MonkeyBrain, Inc.

But just as things end, others continue. Fiction, both new and classic will continue to be published at the website. Slated for December are stories by Mark Finn, Don Webb, David Prill, Jack London, Scott Cupp, and Jayme Lynn Blaschke. And there's still time to catch a Joe R. Lansdale classic
currently online.

DREDGING UP DREG
For years now, underground horror fan fave called DREG has been floating around in the form of convention 5 pager free comics and the like. Originally intended as a graphic novel, the art that accompanied the story was incredible and as articulate as the words themselves.

A psychological werewolf story about an ancient serial killer pursued by a psychic with faltering ability and a terminally ill homicide detective, DREG was written by Terry M. West, who has come to call DREG "...one of the best known unpublished novels around."

Long optioned, but never published by Laurel Publishing, the full length novel (Terry's first!) has been picked up by Publish America for publication in 2003.

Terry M. West is largely known as a independent Horror film maker of such titles as DARK MUSE, which is based on the International Horror Guild nominated comic book series of the same name.

THERE'S ATMOSPHERE AT CHAPTERADAY.COM
Next week, beginning November 25th, my debut novel ATMOSPHERE will be featured on the Atmosphere imageexplosively popular website, Chapteraday.com. For those of you who are unfamiliar with Chapteraday, it's a website that caters to book reading in all its forms. There are a dozen categories to choose from. You sign up for a category, and receive for free, a chapter a day from the selected book of the week for five days. For those of you who have not had a chance to read any part of ATMOSPHERE, you can get the first three chapters next week beginning on Monday, sent right into your inbox.

It's very easy. Simply go to Chapteraday.com, sign up for the Horror/Sci-Fi club by entering your e-mail address. That's it. Then, you'll get your sampling of ATMOSPHERE for free. Piece of cake. It's a great way to help support my first book, as well as the horror genre.

ATMOSPHERE has garnered extremely positive reviews from the likes of Dark Fluidity, Horror World, HiKeeba.com, SFSite.com, and The Midwest Book Review. In addition, the book has received numerous recommendations in the first novel category for the HWA's Bram Stoker Award, and is currently on the consideration list for the MWA's Edgar Award in the category for first novel. Thanks so much to those who have read the book and deemed it worthy for such marks of distinction. I do hope that after reading the first three chapters you might be inclined to locate a copy of the book, either in the store, the library, or from a friend.

NOT TOO LATE TO WATCH THE NIGHTINGALES
E-serial master Douglas Clegg is at it again with another free story and though it's already begun, it's not to late to play catch up! Clegg's first effort at offering a free e-serial came a couple of years ago with NAOMI.

This time out, Doug's story is called WATCHING THE NIGHTINGALES. Though the posting at Clegg's website advises that signing up for his free newsletter which gets you his free novel means you are agreeing to sponsor the serial, all Clegg asks is that you go buy his current novel, THE HOUR BEFORE DARK. Considering Clegg's master storytelling abilities, that's not too much to ask. It's a lot like asking people to go pick up an ice cream cone in their favorite flavor. I could tell you just how to subscribe, but just visiting Clegg's site is so much fun, I'd hate for you to miss the experience. Be sure not to miss the illustration by Caniglia. All this is powerful stuff. So check out DouglasClegg.com

A HAPPY HOPKINS
Hey, you guuuuuuuuuuuuuys! (Shouted with the proper "Goonies" inflection.)
Come celebrate the release of EL DIA DE LOS MUERTOS with me at Cybling. November 22, 10 p.m. EST, I will be chatting online at Cybling.com and AOL's Other World's Cafe about my new book. Complete information is at the Cybling site. We’ll figure out some sort of prize to raffle off for those who show up, and I know we'll have a great time.

I might have mentioned that my fantasy story “Road’s End” will appear in the new French magazine ASPHODALE. You can see the gorgeous cover (with my name on it – woohoo!) there. If you run the page through the translator at Google, you’ll get a rather goofy translation, but it’s better than nothing. This second issue of ASPHODALE will be out in February.

Want a peek at what you missed by not going to World Fantasy Con with me? Judi put some pics online, including one of scifi legend Gene Wolfe and me comparing our pocket knives. Mine’s bigger, Gene! Nyah! I’ve linked her page in from my own site, but you can get there directly by going to Judi's WFC 2002 page.

Lots of deals in the making for me right now, and lots of great things coming next year. There’ll be a new hardcover collection of bah short fiction from PS Publishing, with an introduction by Gene Wolfe. No amount of talking could have made me believe, way back when I first read SHADOW OF THE TORTURER, that I’d one day not only know Gene personally, but that he’d consent to write an introduction for a collection of my own writing. I am tickled pink. I’m not yet sure what the title of the book will be, but you guys know to watch here for more information. There’ll also be a new Zolotow book, LIPSTICK, LIES, AND LADY LUCK, featuring old and new Zolo stuff, plus an introduction by Ed Gorman – in hardcover, no less! As with Gene, I can’t believe I’m fortunate
enough to have had Ed agree to write an intro for my work. I think they call this shade HOT pink! There’s also my “Turtle Knight” chapbook coming from Yard Dog Press. I’m really excited about that. There’s the as yet untitled novella that I owe Cemetery Dance for their hardcover novella series: pirates and ghost ships and high seas adventure – oh boy! There’ll be new stories in two anthologies from Daw Books, HAUNTED HOLIDAYS and RENNAISANCE FAIRS (I’m not sure that’s actually the title, though), the later co-edited by none other than fantasy icon Andre Norton. For my French fans, there's a collection of bah stuff in the works, all translated to the appropriate lingo. The next issue of CEMETERY DANCE magazine is all about the bahmeister, with a new story and an interview. There's the book 13 HORRORS that I'm editing, featuring most of the top horror writers in the biz. And more stuff that I’m forgetting to mention or can’t talk about just yet. Anyway, if I’m a bit slower than usual answering email, you’ll understand why.

Thanksgiving's coming up. if I don't talk to you before then, be thankful for your health. Be thankful for the loyal SOBs who love you in spite of all your shortcomings.

HEARING THE LIGHT!
HOLY ROLLERS, James Newman's novella of door-to-door evangelism gone terribly, terribly wrong, was a popular title when originally published by DarkTales Publishing. Since its publication, Newman has gone on to have a number of stories appear in several publications including "Dirty Black Summer" at Fangoria online, and "The Good, The Bad, and the Severely Malajusted" at HorrorFind. He's had stories in RARE, BRAINBOX 2, THE DEAD INN, and ASYLUM, VOL. 2.

Now Newman reveals additional talented sides of himself in a new audio release of HOLY ROLLERS from Lone Wolf Publications. Newman's tackled more than just reading his story, though. He's added sound effects and original music as well. Limited to 200 signed and numbered compact disks, this second in the LWPAudio line can be played on any regular compact disk player (car, personal, computer, home) since it is audio only.

SIGNING LANGUAGE
A couple of years ago, Hellnotes Editor and Cemetery Dance reviewer Garrett Peck arranged a bookstore signing for Bram Stoker winning author Owl Goingback (CROATA) in St. Augustine, FL. Later in the evening, Owl, Nancy Goingback, Robert W. Walker, Garrett, and I all tromped around the oldest city in the US on one of their famous Ghost Tours. After the official tour, our guide was kind enough to take us to the Tolomato Cemetery, an historic landmark and one truly spooky place where the barbed wire fence faces IN! From that midnight visit, Owl gives us BREED, a totally cool story!

On Saturday, November 15, Dark Delicacies in Burbank, CA, will welcome Owl as he talks about and signs his new book BREED. Joining Owl will be actor/stuntman Jeff Moldovan (Trancers 4 & 5, THE OBLIVION, more) who will be signing photos. Happens at 7:30 p.m. PST.

From Hertzen Chimera
HERTZAN CHIMERA IS DEAD - LONG LIVE HERTZAN CHIMERA
Moments in Purgatory drift by and the angels have been sworn to secrecy.

Just what the f*** has happened to "the living embodiment of the Marquis de Sade" (Feo Amante News 2001) Hertzan Chimera of late? Plumbing the depths of the creative psyche could be a lame answer. Screwing incubus assholes would be the expected alternative, no doubt. Covered in whorelick, drenched in arm mud. But... wait a minute. So early in Chimera's career and already dead (!) Anything of worth has already been said (?)

Who the Hell would interview TOM PICCIRILLI as a jolly green-glowing ghost tethered to the kitchen table of Cannibal cuisine? Why else would DESTINY WEST dig up Chimera's rotting corpse for an earlier interview? But "mea culpa" where is the murder weapon and who the culprit? Investigations lead us to Jack Philbin who cut the throat of Chimera in an Aberdeen back-alley of piss-stink and spilled the interrogating blood all over the soft white breasts of one ALEX SEVERIN.

Seems Chimera had some sort of deal going with an English horror site called TERROR TALES. The last batch of interviews of luminaries such as CHARLEE JACOB, polycarp kusch, EDWARD LEE, JACK KETCHUM (!), MF KORN, MONICA J. O'ROURKE, QUEENIE TYRONE, CHRISTINA SNG, AMY GRECH, KURT NEWTON and Medium Rare Books' own JOHN TURI were all Chimera originals. Maybe he knew his time had come and he was quickly tying off all the ligatures to his fate.

The last authenticated interview of Chimera was executed by John Lawson over at THE DREAM PEOPLE. And Chimera's Kodak-delayed photo report of the Baltimore HORRORFIND 2002 convention may have upset a few delicate horror stars trying to keep their chin above water in a self-diluting market.

Even now, as the vultures still circle the Police crime scene, publisher Eraserhead Press is chomping at the bit to bring out his novel UNITED STATES in time to cash in on the demise of the English gentleman of psycho-horror literature. There is talk of a final hardcore sexhorror collaborative collection BOYFISTGIRLSUCK by Hertzan Chimera and Alex Severin to be published by, appropriately, Massacre Publishing, who refused to be goaded by questions on the matter. This just when Chimera seemed to have hit the big time with stories in FANGORIA and the continuation of his FUCK STAR 12-episode sci-fi fuck festival over at WEIRD SPACE.

Maybe it was that one story STAYER published posthumously by WILDCLOWN CHRONICLES - the only Chimera story known to have been written in the States (an all-day-breakfast hole on Hollywood Boulevard, May 2002) that should remain as the poignant epitaph to his short life of literary crime.

"Rumours of my death have been greatly over-marketed..." Hertzan Chimera, Nov 2002.

DANGEROUS VISIONS TO CLOSE DOORS AND OPEN WINDOWS
(FeoNote: Unfortunately, this is the first and will be the last press release we've ever got from Dangerous Visions Bookstore.) The message posted at the Dangerous Visions Bookstore's website on Halloween was neither trick nor treat. It was real and sad. "We've faced many obstacles over the decades - flood, changing landlords, leaks, robbery," the message read. "We overcame it all (often with your help) but we can't overcome indifference."

Citing dragging sales despite an honest effort to shore up business at their Sherman Oaks, CA, location, owners Lydia Marano Cover and Arthur Byron Cover have decided to go with the flow and close the doors of their 21-year-old "physical" bookstore and operate as an Internet business solely. Signings with authors Barbara Hambly and Harry Turtletove have been cancelled. Only one final live signing event remains before the DV retooling begins. On Saturday, November 23, from 2-4 p.m., horror master Harlan Ellison will sign his namesake anthology DANGEROUS VISIONS at the photography studio next door which is operated by Brian Rose. Books for that signing must be ordered and paid for in advance.

The entire statement of closing and opportunities for acquiring signed copies of Ellison's works are available at the DV website: readsf.com/.

HOPKINS DIRKS AND SKEWERS
William Gagliani in his review at ChiZine says: "(EL DIA DE LOS MUERTOS) may be only 100 pages in length, but it's packed. Multiple Stoker Award-winning author and editor Brian A. Hopkins scores again with a multi-layered work that draws emotion effortlessly from committed readers while also raising the 'grotesque factor' by quite a few degrees in just the right way. Anyone who's read earlier Hopkins collections such as SALT WATER TEARS and THESE I KNOW BY HEART will already know that he has the innate ability to slip an emotional dirk through your jaded armor and skewer your heart just when you don't expect it."

On Friday, November 22, at 10:00 p.m. (EST), Brian A. Hopkins will be chatting online at Cybling.com and AOL's Other World's Cafe, discussing his new book, EL DIA DE LOS MUERTOS, and how he consistently manages to dirk and skewer readers. Please join him!

These are just a few things that happen UNDER COVER OF THE NIGHT. Just in time for Halloween, this fiction collection by author Mary SanGiovanni features seven stories of dark fiction. SanGiovanni is the winner of the 1997 Lavinia Kohl Award from the National Society of Arts and Letters, and has appeared on the prestigious Honorable Mentions list in the annual anthology, Years' Best Fantasy & Horror.

In addition to straight supernatural horror, UNDER COVER OF THE NIGHT covers horror/sci-fi and horror/fantasy, as well, with stories like "The Ossibus," where a crew of three is stranded on a desert planet with an antediluvian wreck; "Three Days," where a king awaits the onslaught of an unholy army; and "Mist of Wynth," a novella about an alien contamination aboard a transport ship.

Mary SanGiovanni is a New Jersey resident and works as a freelance staff manager for a publishing company. She studied Creative Writing and Literature at Fairleigh Dickinson University. Currently, she is marketing a novel and working on a novella and several short stories. Information about the book can be found at marysangiovanni .tripod.com /ucn.html. From Joe Nassise
THE LAUNCH OF THE HWA HORROR PREVIEW NOVEL CLUB & CHANGE

First, don't miss the launch of the new HWA Horror Novel Preview Club next week. Doug Clegg's THE HOUR BEFORE DARK will start things off, followed over the next few weeks by Karen Taylor's RESURRECTION, Mike Laimo's ATMOSPHERE, and Jon Merz's THE INVOKER. Every single one of them is a spectacular read and by joining the club you'll get to read the first several chapters of each through your email every weekday. If you missed the last edition of this newsletter (where the club was first announced) you can learn more about that club at either the Booksamillion.com website or the Chapteraday.com website. Or, you can send an email to join-horror@ books.chapteraday.com to sign up!

Second, there are three great (and very different) interviews with me floating around out there in cyberspace this month. Weston Ochse (co-author of APPALACHIAN GALAPAGOS and SCARY REDNECKS) conducted an interview with me during the hectic days of Horrorfind II. This Thursday, that interview will be running in this week's edition of Hellnotes. If you are not a subscriber, you are missing a great newsletter (and a cool interview!) - drop by hellnotes.com and check things out. Co-editor Jon Merz and I also chatted with the editor of Savage Night about our subscription email magazine, Planet Pulp. You can catch that discussion at angelfire.com/ / /interviews/htm if your are interested. And finally, the great horror website Buried.com is also running an interview with me, regarding my recent election to the position of president for the Horror Writers Association. You can find that one at buried.com/ /joe_nassise.shtml.

Finally, next week I take over as president of the HWA. We've got a lot of great things planned between now and the New Year - if you are a member, keep your eyes and ears open.

From Joseph Nassise
HORROR WRITERS ASSOCIATION LAUNCHES A BOOK PREVIEW CLUB
The Horror Writers Association, in conjunction with Chapteraday.com, is pleased to announce the formation of the Horror and Supernatural Suspense book preview club, to begin service just in time for this year's Halloween season.

The brainchild of entrepreneur Suzanne Beecher, Chapteraday.com currently offers seven different book clubs to choose from; everything from business to romance to audio works is represented. Their eighth and newest club will focus on the best that the horror and dark fantasy genre has to offer. Membership in any of their clubs is free. Subscribers receive an excerpt from that week's selected book in their email each day, Monday through Friday. The selections are designed to be short, taking up no more than five minutes of reading time a day, with the stated goal of getting people ordinarily too busy to read hooked on reading again. When the week is over, members can purchase the book from Booksamillion or check it out from the local library. Each week brings a new selected book.

Says HWA President Joseph Nassise, "Horror fiction serves an important function in our society
as it allows us a means through which we can deal with our everyday fears, letting us channel them into a safe, controlled environment where we can temporarily escape the problems of the real world around us. There are some tremendously talented writers operating in the horror field today, writers the average reader just isn't aware of (like... Feo for example! Oh wait. I don't have a book. Unless... -feo). Chapteraday's book clubs are the perfect means by which to connect the works of our members and the general reading public."

Currently reaching over 100,000 readers and being offered in more than 3500 public libraries across the country, the book preview clubs have been a huge success. "With the world's largest organization of horror writers behind this new club, readers are going to be getting the very best works to preview. What more could a lover of dark fiction want?"

Interested readers can sign up for the new club at join-horror@book.chapteraday.com

LOOKS LIKE IT'S BECOMING OCTOBER
William Simmons, a well-respected editor/reviewer in the horror field, works for such places as Hellnotes and Cemetery Dance and has interviewed authors including Graham Masterton, Ramsey Campbell and Barry Hoffman. William told us recently that his chapbook collection “of autumnal horror and dark fantasy including cover art by Chad Savage and an introduction by T.M. Wright (STRANGE SEED) will be debuting shortly from Flesh & Blood Press.

BECOMING OCTOBER, Simmons’ first collection, has been garnering praise from horror heavy-hitters like Tom Piccirilli, Tim Lebbon and Gary Braunbeck. Lebbon says: “Simmons is superb, a true craftsman whose written nightmares most writers would be happy to dream. This is horror as it should be written—challenging, lyrical, intelligent, and frightening as bloody hell!”

You can check out the first installment of “The Field”, a short story from the BECOMING OCTOBER collection, at Writer Online,a webzine edited by horror novelist T.M. Wright. After an 18-month hiatus, this acclaimed magazine is back, stronger than ever.

DELIRIUM'S SLOW RECOVERY
(FeoNote- I just want to say that the following is not my giving of giving free advertising to Delirium. I play no favorites. I am a penny pinching, money grubbing cretin! If you are a company then I could care less about your freaking hardships. Life is tough. You pay the price to sing here! I only post this item because it is, after all, news - directly from the source. So there!)
Well, it's coming around. All the stock has now been replaced and ready to sell. I'd like to thank the many people who helped me out including Brian Keene, Gak, Matt Schwartz, Colleen Crary and a ton of others who came forth. I appreciate everyone's help and support.

So one may wonder what's on the horizon for Delirium now. And I'll answer this briefly and get on to the rest of the newsletter. The future of Delirium is strong and with continued support from readers and the horror community, Delirium will come back even stronger in 2003. I think Delirium has already proven that it's an honest business and, unlike other publishers who have bit the dust and taken money from fans and readers, Delirium cares about its business ethics. When this flood hit and the books were canceled, customers who preordered canceled titles were given 100% refunds within one week or given the option to substitute titles. I can't stress this enough: Delirium owes its success to readers and supporters who purchase our titles - you are the reason I exist in business today. My immediate plans are to continue to please Delirium supporters by offering great titles along with great customer service. Although the number of books next year has decreased, the future is bright
here and we'll be back on tract soon.

One thing I do ask is something simple. For all of you who read and love Delirium titles, I ask for you to take the time - a few minutes - to tell someone about the books we offer. E-mail a friend who loves horror or a co-worker. Support is the key to Delirium's existence, as it is with any small press without an outside source of financial backing. Delirium goes against the corporate presses each day and we have succeeded. But we need to gain support and word of mouth remains the best way to acheive this support. So please take the time and pass on the word. Thanks! -SRS

FICTIONWISE LAUNCHES eBOOK LIBRARY PRODUCT
CHATHAM, NJ - Fictionwise, Inc., one of the world's leading eBook retailers, today announced the launch of Libwise - a product that allows any library or group to field a completely outsourced, automated eBook lending website. The product officially launches on October 7, 2002 at: www.libwise.com.

Steve Pendergrast, co-founder of Fictionwise, said: "Libwise allows anyone - from a traditional public library to a corporate library or even an author fan website - to loan eBooks to their membership using a customized website branded by the library. Setup is simple, taking as little as an hour, and all hosting and customer support is handled by Fictionwise for a low monthly fee. No technical expertise is required."

The Libwise product allows patrons to download borrowed eBooks to their personal computers or many popular handheld devices such as Palm, PocketPC, WinCE, Psion, or even some Nokia cell phones. EBooks are read using the free Mobipocket reading software. Mobipocket's secure technology enables eBooks to "time-out," which makes the entire model possible.

Borrowers may read the eBooks during a checkout period - configurable by the library from a few days to a few weeks - after which the eBook file expires and then becomes available for the next patron to borrow. The patron interface is accessible through any industry standard web browser and can be customized to look just like another part of the library's general website.

"Libwise provides library staff with a powerful administrative console," said Scott Pendergrast, co-founder of Fictionwise.com. "The console allows them to control checkout periods, waiting lists, and other library policies. In addition, the console provides a suite of reports to help the library's staff determine which eBooks have the highest usage rates, patron activity, and other information."

EInfo Solutions is an Australian company which plans to use Libwise to service rural libraries in the Australian outback. Mike Ottoy, CEO of eInfo Solutions, commented: "Libwise is easy to use and the download of eBooks works really well. The administration functions appear to cover everything that we would require, and are very simple to use. From our perspective, the greatest benefits will come from being able to share our resources amongst a number of libraries in our area."

The Libwise product is very cost effective, making it practical for even tiny libraries or private groups such as clubs, church groups, author fan websites, or corporate libraries to field a full-featured eBook lending website. A website powered by Libwise can be set up, hosted, and fully supported by Fictionwise for as little as $29.95 a month. The librarian may select content from a growing catalog of contemporary titles that already numbers in the thousands, and in dozens of categories, both fiction and nonfiction.

When used in a 'book club' environment, the system can be configured to automatically collect dues from participants. Public libraries would not use that feature, but would use Libwise's ability to validate card-holding patrons using the library's existing OPAC (open public access catalog) system. Public libraries can also enable a "donation" system that allows patrons to donate eBooks or cash to the library.

Kelly Ford, owner and founder of KnowBetter.com, said: "By building our new 'KnowBetter Lending Library' on the Libwise platform, we'll be able to offer eBook readers thousands of electronic titles they can freely check out - at any time of the day or night. The technology involved is truly remarkable. Libwise allows us to provide another great service to our readers, continue to work on our core website, and still have a little free time to read a few eBooks ourselves.”

Information about Libwise can be found at: www.libwise.com

ABOUT FICTIONWISE

Fictionwise.com is the leading independent eBook retailer today with over 6,700 eBooks in all categories of fiction and nonfiction for sale in formats for personal computers and virtually all handheld devices. With sales topping 15,000 eBooks per month and the extensive customer service experience that it brings, Fictionwise (claims it) is uniquely positioned to service the fast-growing library market for eBooks.

Contact: Scott Pendergrast
Company: Fictionwise. Inc.
Phone: 973-701-6771
Email: scott@fictionwise.com

(FeoNote: The question here is: Does Fictionwise or Libwise pay the authors their full dues as if the library actually bought their book? This story bears watching, especially for those authors who signed over the electronic rights to their stories.)

SIMON CLARK FEELS JUST TRIFFID
Simon Clark was delighted to receive not one but two British Fantasy Awards when this year's winners were announced on 21 September 2002 at the British Fantasy Convention, Champagne Charlie's, London.

Not only did he pick up the Best Novel Award (the August Derleth Fantasy Award) for THE NIGHT OF THE TRIFFIDS, but he also received the Best Short Fiction Award for "Goblin City Lights" from URBAN GOTHIC: LACUNA AND OTHER TRIPS.

After the ceremony, Simon Clark said: 'More than ten years ago I went to my first awards ceremony of the British Fantasy Society, saw writers and editors collecting the awards they'd won, and I wondered what they were feeling at that moment. Now I know, and believe me it's an extraordinarily good feeling. I'm proud and pleased to win both awards for best short story and best novel.

Awards like this not only boost a writer's self-confidence but vividly demonstrate that readers do back their favourite writers by taking time out to vote for them. I know every time I see the statuettes it's going to give me a hell of a boost and encourage me to push back the boundaries of what I'm doing.'

KEALAN-PATRICK BURKE MAKES A GOTHIC GRAB
Kealan-Patrick Burke has grabbed the reigns of fiction editor at Gothic.Net in place of Seth Lindbergh, who thinks he can make a better writer than editor. We'll See!

Burke says "I cannot hope to fill the shoes of such a respected writer/editor," and small wonder, as Seth is nearly 7 feet tall!

Kealan-Patrick first got attention (knocked everyone on their ass) with his upcoming anthology, TAVERNS OF THE DEAD: He got Stephen King to contribute. When asked how he did it, Kealan said, "I asked." No comment has come from the King camp, whose house outside of Bangor, Maine is now buried under 4 stories of requests from anyone who so much as lives near a Kinko's.

Kealan-Patrick will also release BRIMSTONE TURNPIKE, a five novella anthology featuring stories from feoamante.com contributors like Mike Oliveri and Harry Shannon. Both anthos will be released by Cemetery Dance Publications.

Gothic.net is pretty much a pay-site and Kealan-Patrick hopes to get us to part with our moola by offering us stories from folks like Gary A. Braunbeck and Poppy Z. Brite. October also brings in Gothic.net's new look, which couldn't come early enough as the look for 2001-2002 was/is ugly as a crap cadaver! Not like the look they had in 2000-2001 (their Tim Burton/Jhonen Vasquez period), 1999-2000 (their Circus period), or 1998-1999 (their goth-Egyptian period). Sigh! Those were the days!

SEPTEMBER 13

THE HORROR OF HORROR PUBLISHING
Shane Staley of Delirium Press has gone through some deeply hellacious times in the past few weeks. He gave some mighty bad news to many of his writers, but it was not near as bad as the news he had for himself.

Here is an edited version of the letter he sent out to his writers.

"These past few months have been very troublesome months for Delirium Books and it's finally time to address these problems. This is no doubt one of the hardest decisions I've had to make, but I feel it needs to be done.

I've decided to cut back on titles by canceling or postponing 80% of Delirium's forthcoming titles."

Shane went on to explain that a water pipe broke sometime after he left Delirium and spent the rest of the night flooding the publishing office with about 3 to 5 inches of water. The pressure was so great as to peel the paint off the wall where the water hit. The cause is a mystery as the office is only 5 years old.

Among the items damaged was the original art paintings and Delirium's complete inventory of in-house paperback books (Limited Editions were kept in a separate place and were not affected). Due to recent escrow payment changes, Insurance was raised $800.00 and it was while Shane was shopping and between insurance companies that disaster struck.

With other things that have happened this year, the water damage and subsequent loss of stock is the third strike against Shane and Delirium. Strike one was Canadian Customs breaking the Corrosion Award sculpture by artist Robert Blair into leetle beety peeces before passing it on to Shane. Of course, since its a government job, no one is responsible to you or anyone else for their job or how they do it.

"Instead of ten titles in 2003," Shane told his writers, "I'll only be able to launch 2-4, depending on sales of existing titles throughout the fall."

Shane apologized profusely in his email and finished with these words.

"My final statement on this is that Delirium WILL NOT cease business. I've worked too hard and those of you who know me have discovered that I have a passion for this field and I will continue to work hard and rebuild Delirium to and beyond it's current status as a contender in the horror specialty press market. This is a mere setback unfortunately one that will effect you (my authors and artists) as well as myself.

Thanks to all of you."

Among the cancellations is the much anticipated DEAD INN 2.

We wish Shane better luck in the future.

ALIVE IN THE SOUTHWEST AND OTHER PARTS!
Texas writer Joe R. Lansdale always has more than one iron in the fire writing not just horror but science fiction, mysteries, and westerns. Having donned his SF boots as he played Toastmaster at this year's ArmadilloCon in Austin, TX, Joe did one masterful job with his opening remarks, waxing
nostalgic on earlier conventions (though perhaps revealing his age): "...the conventions aren't the same either... gatherings and banquets were a lot more exciting because we had to forage and hunt for our own food. I loved that. We'd bring in a mastodon and fling it down on the floor, gut it and roast it." Uhm... sure, Joe, whatever you say.

Actually, what he said was that Science Fiction sucks! Don't believe me? His entire copyrighted two cents, "The Good Old Days Done Come and Gone and Ain't Gonna Come Back No Kinda Way," may be read at RevolutionSF. Looks as though missing this year's ArmadilloCon was a mistake!

Meanwhile, BUBBA HO-TEP, the Don Coscarelli film based on Joe's story of the same name (and starring Bruce Campbell and Ozzie Davis) gets some play in the next few weeks. First up is the Toronto International Film Festival, September 5-11. Then on October 7, Houston's River Oaks will offer a showing. In Houston, the tickets will be available the week before and seating is limited to a mere 500 (smallgroup for Texas). Grab the lawnchairs and let's get in line now!

KEENE SPEAK
Long-time Brian Keene fans have heard about "Fodder", a collaborative novella he wrote with Tim Lebbon a few years back. It was acquired for a William Hope Hodgson tribute anthology, but that anthology has yet to surface. So other than hearing a brief portion of it read aloud at WHC 2000, fans have been despairing that they might never see it.

Well now there’s good news! "Fodder" will appear as the lead story in SHIVERS, an all-new horror anthology from Cemetery Dance Publications. SHIVERS makes its debut at the Second Annual Horrorfind Weekend this month, and also features fiction from Bentley Little, Graham Masterton, Edward Lee, Tom Piccirilli, John Pelan, Geoff Cooper, Brian Freeman, and dozens more.

In other news, "Crimson Cross", a short story Brian co-wrote with imprisoned horror writer and his long-time pal James Speelman, will be reprinted in the first issue of NIGHT SHOPPING, a new horror magazine.

FINAL REST FOR THE WICKED
Several people also asked about another edition of NO REST, now that the Vox 13 print run has sold out. There seems to be some confusion as to the different versions, so I’ll try to give the definitive answer here.

The Imaginary Worlds version of NO REST FOR THE WICKED was released in three editions: Limited Edition Hardcover, Hardcover, and Trade Paperback. All of them had an ISBN# of 91-973949-1-2 (and having the same ISBN for all three editions became a nightmare for bookstores and distributors). The only difference between the Limited and the Standard Hardcover was the signature sheet. That's it.

Originally, the Limited was supposed to be a print run of 200 copies. I won't rehash the Imaginary Worlds saga here, as it serves no purpose and pretty much everybody is aware of what happened. Suffice to say, I know of 50 copies in existence. Nobody knows how many copies of the standard hardcover and paperback actually got printed. I personally know of 50 each.

So 50 + 50 + 50 = 150 copies total (and I'm 99.9% certain the other ones were never printed. Last I heard, they were being shipped overnight from Sweden. That was two years ago).

Vox 13 brought out the trade paperback of NO REST FOR THE WICKED REDUX. The ISBN# for that is 1-93059-511-5. The print run was several thousand. It sold out last month from the publisher, and the print run has ended. At one point, Vox 13 was going to do both a hardcover and a Lettered edition, but we came to the mutual agreement not to do those.

So once REDUX is gone from various bookstores, there will be no further editions of NO REST.

Lately there have been rumors of an e-book version, and even a mass-market version. Let me say right now that there will be not be. Although I am proud of NO REST, the stories in the book represent an earlier time. I feel that I am much stronger as a writer now, and it wouldn't serve my career or the readers to continue to make those stories readily available.

KETCHUM IF YOU CAN
If you're in the New York City area on August 12th, stop by DIXON PLACE at the VINEYARD to catch author, Bram Stoker Award winner, and all-around great guy Jack Ketchum (RED, THE GIRL NEXT DOOR) reading from one of his latest works.

Ketchum's amassed quite a loyal following, and justifiably so. Even Stephen King says, "Ketchum has become a kind of hero to those of us who write tales of terror and suspense. He is, quite simply, one of the best in the business." You going to argue with Stephen King? DIXON PLACE at the VINEYARD is located at 309 E. 26th Street. There will be a $6 charge to help support Dixon Place's "Summer HOT Festival".

WITH A TITLE LIKE THIS, COULD MAKE A GOOD MOVIE!
Bram Stoker Award-winning writer and editor Brian A. Hopkins shared some good news with us recently: his long-awaited novella, EL DIA DE LOS MUERTOS, is gathering some terrific pre-release buzz.

Ed Gorman, author of The Dark Fantastic, was recently quoted as saying: "Brian Hopkins' novella reads like a fusion of Malcolm Lowry's Under the Volcano and some early Paul Bowles added to make things even grimmer. This is a hallucinatory portrait of a search through several levels of hell as both a physical and spiritual reality. You come away clawed and poisoned by it. You sure as hell will never forget it. A powerful, serious and excellent piece of work."

El Dia De Los Muertos is expected to be released this October, In addition, Brian's short story, "Lost Things", can be found in the soon-to-be-released anthology, Songs from Dead Singers (Catalyst Press).

NEED A ROADMAP TO PUBLICATION? GO ZREM!
Author Jon F. Merz (the Lawson Vampire series) had quite a memorable experience as he watched his novel THE FIXER go from acceptance to publication. His journey began June 2001 and finished by the end of May 2002, and he recorded his feelings and experiences in a weekly journal, which he's now offering as a free e-book called Countdown.

Merz seems to want to help aspiring authors, perhaps warn them of the travails ahead. Along for the ride is Joseph M. Nassise, an author who knows a thing or two about the long road to publishing. His own small-press venture, RIVERWATCH, recently sold to Pocket Books. Nassise was a 2001 Bram Stoker-award nominee and he's written an introduction for Merz's e-book, in which he says, "What you hold in your hands is . . . a roadmap. A roadmap that traces the route one eager new writer named Jon Merz traveled in that bewildering maze known as the publishing process."

BONEHEADS IN BIRMINGHAM
Message boards are part of the horror world known as Terror Tales, a hugely popular online horror magazine run by Brits John B. Ford and Paul Kane. The message board owners - called Terrorscribes - will be gathering in Birmingham (the OTHER Birmingham) during the weekend of September 6th at the Britannia Hotel.

While we're on the subject of Terrorscribes, they have a contest running called The Supreme Terrorscribe Contest 2002. That title alone kind of makes you feel humble, doesn't it? Terrorscribes calls it "…the most exciting contest the horror genre has ever produced online and can be found only at the UK's biggest horror web site Terror Tales." One person will be voted Supreme Terrorscribe of 2002 and will be awarded the Samuel Bonehead Trophy by John B. Ford and Paul Kane in Birmingham at the Britannia Hotel on September 7th. (I guess they'll break from one of their wild parties to give out this award.) Should the winner be from the other side of the pond, the Samuel Bonehead prize will be sent via airmail, so the winner should see it anywhere from 2 weeks to 4 years. Of course you don't get to keep the trophy. You hang on to it for a year and then pass it to the next Bonehead Supreme Terrorscribe. There are cash prizes as well, plus promises of publication, so don't feel too bad if you have to return the trophy.

The QUEER FEAR II anthology (Arsenal Pulp Press) is scheduled for an October release and contains stories from such authors as Poppy Z. Brite, Gemma Files, Thomas Roche, Edo van Belkom, Sephera Giron, and Savory himself.

Savory’s novelization of his long story THE DISTANCE TRAVELLED will include a Miéville-inspired character named Tom China, who is, according to Savory, “Real evil, but a bit of a dullard.”

MOVE OVER OPRAH!

Author Douglas Clegg (NIGHTMARE HOUSE, YOU COME WHEN I CALL YOU) writes a monthly newsletter for his fans that keeps them up-to-date on events in the horror novelist's life and career.

Recently, Clegg started a Book Club through his newsletter. He explains, "These are purely my picks (no one influences me in the choices for this Book Club, and if you try, it'll backfire). I am going to make sure that any book, old or new, that I pick has my 100% recommendation behind it. Many of the books I pick for this will be older books that I re-read often, that I love."

May's pick was Perfume by Patrick Susskind. Perfume is described as the gruesome, picaresque allegory of an olfactory genius-monster - a murderous perfumer of decadent eighteenth-century France.

Clegg says, "Be forewarned: Perfume is a novel that, whether you love it or are horrified by it, is unforgettable. It is a rich, lush novel that encompasses both wonder and terror. The opening alone is worth the price of the book."

June's selection: The Power of One by Bryce Courtenay, which came with a glowing endorsement by Clegg: "It is one of the purest storytelling experiences I've ever encountered - a first novel set in South Africa around the time of World War II, about a boy growing to manhood. I find that some of my favorite novels are centered around an unforgettable character. This is NOT a horror novel, at least not in the usual terms. As I stated before, this is not a horror book club, but is my book club - which means, I pick 'em as I love 'em. No one influences these picks, and if you're only into reading one genre of fiction, you won't enjoy the variety in this book club."

Doug's pick for July? "This one's by my friend MJ Rose - whose fiction I discovered with In Fidelity. The new one is called Flesh Tones, and it's a tale of erotic obsession, murder, and well, it's a page-turner. Cosmo named it one of its sexy summer reads. And it is. It's NOT a horror novel - but as I've said before, with the Book Club, I'm picking books that I've enjoyed in any and all genres."

Other recommendations, although not Book Club selections, include Terrence Cheng's Sons of Heaven, and Christopher Golden's The Ferryman.

HORRORWORLD GETS THE MESSAGE
Horror World is pleased to announce that three more authors known to the 'mass market' now have personal message boards at the website;

Stephen Gresham has had more than a dozen horror novels published since the mid 1980's and his books include DEMON'S EYE and THE LIVING DARK. Jon F. Merz is the author of a new vampire series (beginning with THE FIXER) published by Pinnacle and among Katherine Ramsland's many books are biographies of Anne Rice and Dean Koontz. Her debut horror novel is due later this year.

Horror World now has almost 40 author message boards in operation for authors currently or previously published in the mass market along with a further 30 for general discussion and authors / publishers working in the independent presses.

THE DEATH OF DARKTALES
After weeks of sending out emails and letters to their authors telling of the certain doom that was to fall on DarkTales, DarkTales Publications announced its demise in the Jobs in Hell newsletter on Tuesday, much to the dismay of small-press authors everywhere.

David Nordhaus, Keith Herber, and Nick Kaufmann were the amazing team that ran the show at DarkTales, and Dave says he'll continue to maintain the website and the e-list.

Like JF Gonzales (author of CLICKERS and MATERNAL INSTINCT) says, "[Darktales] helped launch the careers of over half a dozen writers, and [they've] developed a blueprint other presses are following."

The demise of DarkTales Publications leaves a gaping hole in the world of small-press horror publishing, and they will be sorely missed.

Not exactly a magazine … not quite an anthology. So - what exactly is Nemonymous? Editor DF Lewis sums it up nicely: "It's simply quite something else, but I'm not sure exactly what."

The concept behind Nemonymous is that writers who are accepted for an issue are published anonymously, their true identity not revealed until the subsequent issue. Edo van Belkom won an Aurora Award in 1999 for his short story "Hockey's Night In Canada" and has also won a Bram Stoker Award from the Horror Writers Association. Since TEETH was published in the spring of 2001, van Belkom has followed it up with the short story collection SIX-INCH SPIKES, and a new novel MARTYRS, which is also set in Canada at a fictitious Jesuit College in Northern Ontario. Upcoming books include the young-adult horror anthology BE VERY AFRAID! (Tundra Books) in October 2002, and a new mass-market horror novel SCREAM QUEEN (Kensington Books) in March 2003. BRIAN STOKER
Brian Keene (author of the short story collection No Rest for the Wicked, editor of The Best of Horrorfind, among others) took home the coveted Bram Stoker Award for Non-Fiction for his weekly newsletter, Jobs in Hell at the Bram Stoker Awards ceremony in New York City on Saturday, June 8, 2002.

"I'm in pretty good company," Brian said after the banquet. "It feels real incredible." The year before, Stephen King's On Writing won the Non-Fiction award.

Brian believes the state of horror is in a good place, and his optimism is infectious. "In the past four years, Jobs in Hell subscribers have been exposed to over 900 different markets for horror. 900! Now is a great time to be a horror writer! We're back and healthier than ever." Part of his acceptance speech, the crowd reacted favorably. Keene was clearly a favorite at the awards ceremony.

Keene recently negotiated a mass market paperback deal for his novel More Than Infinity and wants to devote more time to his writing career. Most surprising was his decision to retire from Jobs in Hell and turn over leadership to Kelly Laymon (editor, Excitable Boys). At the Stoker banquet, Keene said," It's been four years. In two weeks, I'll be retiring from Jobs in Hell. But I have no fears and no regrets, because I leave Jobs in Hell in the very capable hands of Kelly Laymon. And I think the only thing that could make me prouder than winning this fine award here tonight, is watching the new heights Jobs in Hell will reach under her guidance."

As with all awards, this one too had its share of controversy which will no doubt be debated among writers and artists in the comics industry. Never-the-less, congratulations to all!

Probably the biggest and weirdest issue about the Stokers this year is the utter lack of any winners for Illustrated Narrative. Even Illustrated Narratives in Horror that were good enough to be nominated for the coveted Eisner and Kurtzman Awards (awards in the comics industry) did not find favor with the Stoker Award voters. And yet a veritable treasure trove of Horror and Dark Fantasy titles were released in 2001 including:

BLACK HOLE: Charles Burns
THE GOLEM'S MIGHTY SWING by James Sturm (Drawn & Quarterly)
HELLBLAZER: "Highwater," by Brian Azzarello and Marcelo Frusin (Vertigo/DC)
HELLBOY: Conqueror Worm, by Mike Mignola (Dark Horse Maverick)
RUSE by Mark Waid, Butch Guice, and Michael Perkins (CrossGen)
SCARY GODMOTHER: Ghouls Out for Summer, by Jill Thompson (Sirius)
TALES OF TERROR published by Gemstone/Fantagraphics

Other Horror comics ranged from the comedic annual
BART SIMPSON'S TREEHOUSE OF HORROR Spine-Tingling Spooktacular
to LAZARUS: The Many Reincarnations, Issue #6 by Zak Hennessey
as well as CREEPS, GLOOM COOKIE, LENORE (Soon to be a feature length animated movie from Sony Pictures), and many more.

Why were none of these good enough for the voting members? We'll find out in coming issues.

PRIMED FOR A COLD TOUCH
Editors William Simmons and Maynard and Sims have delivered the anthology COLD TOUCH
to Sean Wallace at Prime for publication in November.

This new 82,000-word paperback anthology includes original stories by T.M. Wright, Al Sarrantonio, Barry Hoffman, Tim Lebbon, Brian A. Hopkins, John Pelan, Paul Finch, Kurt Newton, William P. Simmons, James S. Dorr, Maynard & Sims, Paul Lewis, Rebecca M Senese, Steve Lockley, Greg F. Gifune, Scott Nicholson, James Doig, Derek M. Fox, and Steve Redwood.

A new anthology of quality fiction, each story original. In COLD TOUCH, masters of quiet horror provide stories that hint at the terrible and threatening while never quite revealing the source of discomfort. Top writers give us the harmony of the primal mystery with the recognizably macabre.

Also from Maynard and Sims this month, INCANTATIONS, a new short story collection by Prime Books. If you think of these two writers simply in terms of traditional ghost stories - then think again - these stories are nightmares from a cracked modern landscape.

From Monica J. O'Rourke
MEDIUM RARE BOOKS ANNOUNCES JOHN R. PLATT'S DIE LAUGHING
Medium Rare Books has announced the impending release of "Die Laughing," the first short-story collection by award-winning writer John R. Platt.

"John Platt is well known for his unique mix of humor and horror. His short stories have appeared in numerous magazines and anthologies, and he's started to gather quite a following" said Medium Rare Books publisher John Turi, "We're extremely pleased to be publishing his first book."

"Die Laughing" includes over thirty humorous short stories and poems. More than half of the collection is new material. Other stories were originally published in magazines like Satire, Gothic.net and Strange Horizons. Three stories reprinted in the book have already earned Honorable Mentions in various editions of The Year's Best Fantasy & Horror (St. Martin's Press).

John R. Platt is the award-winning author of over fifty published short stories. Pulp Eternity magazine named him one of the top ten writers publishing fiction on the Internet in 1999. Platt served three years as President of the Garden State Horror Writers, and has also written for comic books, newspapers, magazines and radio.

Michael T. Huyck Jr. strolls with Trey Barker through a VEIL OF THE SOUL.

DAVIS OFFERS SUGAR AND SPLICE GIRLS
The authentic voice of Scottish crime novelist Carol Anne Davis comes no doubt because she holds a Master's Degree in criminology. Rather than offer her hand at a spinning a yarn, Davis' latest effort, WOMEN WHO KILL, takes a walk on the nonfiction side as she allows the reader to explore the lives of fourteen murderers: all women.

Yet her first offering in the True Crime genre dashes the myth that women could and would kill merely as a defense or in the throes of passion. WOMEN WHO KILL analyzes the childhood formation and adult experiences of female *serial killers,* and a remoreless bunch they are, too.

Publishers Weekly said: "Despite ample psychological discussion (e.g. of criminal types with names like "Profit Killer" or "Angel of Death"), this book is more Grand Guignol than academic...." And now WOMEN WHO KILL has just been released in paperback by Allison & Busby (May in Britain and June in the USA). just in time to drag to the beach! Might make you look twice at that babe in the bikini.

HELL BREAKS OUT ALL OVER!
Conventions aren't the only things happening in horror as the heat of summer melts the ice.

Stacy Layne Wilson was fortunate enough to attend the Mario Bava Festival and posted this report at her site (Psst... there are pictures, reviews, AND a video!) staciwilson.com (Stop drooling, Feo!)

Those in the Chicago area are used to hearing about the Monday night events with the Twilight Tales Reading Series, but this Friday, June 7, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Chicagoland is the place where Stoker nominee Yvonne Navarro, Dangerous Dame Tina Jens, and novelist Jay Bonansinga will be! The College of DuPage is presenting "How to Get Published," and these experience writers will be your guides through that perilous adventure. According to Von: "The College is charging a $10 fee (wow, what a deal!) and if possible, they would like folks to pre-register by calling 630-942-3948 (tell them it's Class Code #37382)." The college address is

The College of DuPage
525 Fawell Blvd.
Glen Ellyn, Illinois

On Saturday, June 8, from 1-3 p.m., Scott Nicholson will be signing his first novel, THE RED CHURCH, at Malaprop's, 55 Haywood St, Asheville NC. He'd love for you to join him there!

On Tuesday, June 11, at 7:00 p.m., Del and Sue Howison will welcome two very special guests: novelist John Saul and actress Lee Meriwether (Catwoman!). Saul will be signing his new novel, MIDNIGHT VOICES. Ms. Meriwether is the voice on the audiotape of the same work. They'd love to have you join them! Where? Burbank, California, of course.

Interview by Harry Shannon
Feoamante.com isn't just a Horror site, but a Horror, Thriller, Mystery, and Suspense site. Visitors have been enjoying reviewer Harry Shannon's takes on various Mystery and Suspense novels in Story Time. Now, Harry talks one on one with The Bulldog of Mystery: ED GORMAN. Read this fascinating account of a very private man.

Harry Shannon interviews ED GORMAN.

NEWS FROM THE GRAVE MAN
Tom Piccirilli writes to tell us that he'll be a guest at the second Horrorfind Convention, August 23-25 in Baltimore MD at the BWI Airport Mariott. Two events he's scheduled for will be a round table gathering with Douglas Clegg, Edward Lee, Jack Ketchum and John Pelan as well as a reading with Gerard Houarner. If you'll be in attendance, definitely step up and say hello. More information at horrorfind.com. I'll also be showing up at the Stoker Awards weekend in New York for at least a day or two. Hope to see some of you there.

Tom's also just signed contracts with NightShade Books whoâ'll be publishing his next novel A CHOIR OF ILL CHILDREN in hardback.

Also out soon from the Cemetery Dance Novella line is CAST IN DARK WATERS. This is a strange action-adventure-horror piece co-written with Ed Gorman. It tells the story of a female pirate in the early 18th Century who is haunted by her dead husband as she seeks to save a young woman trapped on an island where demons supposedly roam. Despite its pulpish elements, this one is actually played pretty straight and is full of Caribbean myths and lore, along with a historical edge.

Keep up with Tom at his official website:Epitaphs.

AS IF THERE WEREN'T ENOUGH SCARY REDNECKS
Weston Ochse tells us that his upcoming collaboration with David Whitman, APPALACHIAN GALAPAGOS: A Scary Rednecks Collection, which is (more or less, kinda sorta in a way but probably not really) a sequel to SCARY REDNECKS And Other Inbred Horrors, will come out in three states -
a Lettered Slipcased Edition, a Hardback Edition and a Trade paperback.

The Hardback will be released first and will have a different cover than the paperback. The Slipcased Edition is Top Secret until he's ready to unveil it. Weston, he say, "Trust me when I say that it will be appropriately Scary and appropriately Rednecky. Always feel free to email me, check out the message board on my website or the SCARY REDNECKS message board at Medium Rare Books."

HAPPINESS IS SUBMISSION TO WILDCLOWN
G. Wells Taylor, author of When Graveyards Yawn and publisher of the Wildclown Chronicle Ezine is celebrating the first successful year of publication by calling for submissions from authors. The Chronicle’s Borderland Issue took the weirdest Ezine on the Internet to the misty regions that lie between the Horror and Mystery sections at Amazon.com. A special thanks is offered to the Internet Book Giant for letting the Chronicle do it and to horror great and grandfather of Cyberpunk John Shirley for his participation.

Further appreciation is forwarded to the many talented writers who contributed stories during the Chronicle’s first year: Hertzan Chimera, Harry Shannon, Karras Bommer, Dennis Yates, Bronwyn Gregory, K.J. Ross, Denise M. Clark, Wrath James White, Ed Cowell, Carol MacAllister and Robert Edward Hinton.

Wildclown Chronicle Submission requirements can be found onsite at wildclown.com/chronicle/ submissions.html. The creative potential is vast for an Ezine like the Chronicle that uses rapidly evolving state-of-the art software and hardware delivery systems to push the envelope. The publisher, Taylor, hopes that the coming year will allow the full development of the Chronicle’s multimedia potential. There is discussion to include a short video, downloadable radio play and music. The Chronicle is a child of the Internet and is prepared to grow along with it.

SINS OF BLOOD AND STONE
First, I'll be chatting in the Delirium Chatroom. about my first novel, SINS OF BLOOD AND STONE. That's this Sunday, May 12, from 10pm to midnight (Eastern Standard Time). Won't be just me, it'll be the Catalyst Chat, and will feature other Catalyst authors and, very likely, the publisher herself, Monica J. O'Rourke.

On Memorial Day weekend (May 24-26), I'll be a guest at OASIS, in Orlando. Specifically, you'll find me on such panels as SCARED HORROR WRITERS?, and you can catch me reading Sunday afternoon at 3pm (with friend and fellow horror author Chris Kosarich).

Then, I'll be signing at the Barnes & Noble in the Oveido Marketplace, Saturday June 15, 2pm-5pm. If you're local, I hope you can at least support me by showing up. If it goes bad, I may try to slip across the mall and catch a movie, but please don't make me have to think about that.

From Judi Rohrig
TWILIGHT SHOWCASE WILL FADE TO DARK
Maybe it's appropriate that a post at the Horror World website became the avenue for Twilight Showcase editor Gary W. Conner to confirm the abounding rumors that his site will be going dark in a few weeks. It was like a friend sharing bad news with a friend rather than some sterile press release.

Said Conner: "This is my first public comment on the matter, although many people have been told privately..." Twilight Showcase will indeed be ending a four-year run in the Fall. Issue thirty-two (mid-August) will be the last issue.

"Last summer, I left my previous career to pursue a full-time writing career. I've been going hard at that, but I found that TS was occupying too much of my time. When I considered that I'd also been doing this for four years (and that we were *monthly* for almost three years), I realized that I'd put just about all the time I could afford into the zine.

"I grant you, it was still not an easy decision. I've been honored to work with a vast array of amazingly talented people, and I've made a lot of great friends over the years. I'm sure that I'll continue contact with all those fine people in one regard or another long after TS is gone. We published some great work, we won an award or two, and we got looked at for others. The bottom line is that I haven't a single regret - how could I?

"All that said, I'll reiterate that we still have two more issues to publish - and they're *phenomenal* issues with some top-notch work. So I'd ask our readers to stick around a while longer, to let us dazzle you a couple more times."

"Dazzle" was an appropriate word. Twilight Showcase will be missed. Sorely.

AS OFFENSIVE AS THEY WANNA BE
Mike Philbin aka Hertzan Chimera writes stuff so obscene that he would likely be ignored were it not for the fact that he can actually Write and write Well. As it is, he is merely reviled. He is also a shameless self-promotor. He wrote to tell us: "For those unaware, SKIMMING THE GUMBO NUCLEAR author MF Korn and "SZMONHFU" author Hertzan Chimera have teamed up many times to write collaborative stories with the likes of DF Lewis and Dave Mathews, but it took a lonnnnng while for the odd couple to pair up and examine each other's twisted viewpoint. The result of their symbiosis has been snapped up by the ever-astute APOCALYPSE FICTION MAGAZINE, voted "the coolest zine since the advent of the 'net'... " by HEAVY METAL (Adult Illustrated Fantasy Magazine)."

"FUCK STAR" will run for twelve consecutive issues. One new episode per issue of WEIRD SPACE - a brand new section of the A.F.M. created to accommodate the twelve very ADULT tales of the "FUCK STAR" series. But what is Fuck Star? What should the reader expect?

According to Mike Philbin: "If you read horror or science fiction on a regular basis, you are not ready for this. Beyond overlit porno-droid fucks of twisted insanity. The entire universe is plugged in via a ten-way broadband connection to our anti-hero, Eli-X. He is a permanent hard-on combat fuck doll of the next sexual revolution when man has conquered only the stars and the space between man's ears is still the next big battle ground. You will come to love Eli-X. Women will send him fanmail to his possible future. Men will look to the stars with envious eyes. The reader will undoubtedly hate his parents, his owners, his torturous love affairs, will detest his clichéd scripts."

TALKING SMACK AGAIN

The recordings are all done, and it's being mixed now. I'm real proud of how things turned out, and I can promise that you'll enjoy this one. Among the highlights are "Wild Kingdom" and "The Revolution Happened While You Were Sleeping (A Summoning Spell)", both of which were recorded live in Chicago at the World Horror Convention 2002. We had a packed audience for that performance, and those that were there raved about it afterward.

Another highlight on the disc is "Caught In A Mosh"—but this ain't the NO REST FOR THE WICKED version. Nope. This is a bootleg "Drunken Reading Remix". It was recorded in New Jersey at a birthday party for Meghan Fatras, and it is thirty-two minutes of uncensored chaos, recorded under mass quantities of tequila and beer. I laughed my ass off listening to the playback, and I think you all will too.

MONICA RULES STORY TIME
Long time feoamante.com contributor and editor in general, Monica O'Rourke, is taking over the editorial reigns of Story Time here at Feo Amante's Horror Home Page.

"The site has been growing tremendously in both visitors and contributions and it just got too big for me to handle." I was quoted as saying to myself. This still leaves Horror Movies, Shadow Music, The Gallery, Horrible News, and Conventions for me to run in addition to all the background coding etc., and still finding time to actually write! Sheee! I mean... Wheee!

All contributors should read the guidelines and then send their material to Monica O'Rourke at gunslngrmo@aol.com.

JUDI ROHRIG TOOTS HER OWN HORN (FOR ONCE!)
My story, "Elenora's Silver Box," appears in the newly released DREAMING OF ANGELS (Prime Books). I've also placed two more stories for publication: "En El Nombre de Cristobal" has been accepted by editors Garrett Peck and J.F. Gonzalez for Volume Two of TOOTH & CLAW (Lone Wolf Publication) while editor Brian A. Hopkins has accepted "Cechas!" for EXTREMES 5: FANTASY AND HORROR TO THE ENDS OF THE EARTH (Lone Wolf Publication).

I've also been interviewing people all over the place! Last month my interview with Subterranean Press publisher William K. Schafer was published in Hellnotes.
Mystery Scene Magazine carried an interview with Brian A. Hopkins and the WHC2002 Program Book also carried another Hopkins interview.
Ahead for Mystery Scene Magazine is an interview with Barbara Hambly.
While in Chicago, I completed an audio interview with Steve Beai which has been included in the Deluxe Edition of Beai's new collection, DARK RHYTHMS (Lone Wolf Publications), and a print interview with Steve Rasnic Tem and Melanie Tem is set to appear in the Tem's multimedia extravaganza, IMAGINATION BOX, coming in a few weeks from Lone Wolf Publications.
Then there's my updated website, which has a new address: judirohrig.com. There are lots of WHC2002 pictures there.
And finally, I will be a guest at Conestoga 6 in Tulsa, OK, July 19-21.

THE LONE WOLF STRETCHES
Publisher Brian A. Hopkins and associate editors Michael Laimo (BLOODTYPE), J.F. Gonzalez and Garrett Peck (TOOTH & CLAW), Jean Rabe (CARNIVAL), Steve Beai (DARK RHYTHMS), and Judi Rohrig (STONES) all survived WHC2002 in Chicago. While our sales in the Dealers Room weren't fantastic, we did enjoy a few minutes of camaraderie as contributors (authors, artists, photographers, and musicians) gathered for the world release of four Lone Wolf Publication titles

DARK RHYTHMS, a new collection by Steve Beai, marks the first time LWP is offering a Deluxe Edition of
one of its titles, and, boy, howdy, does this baby stir the waters! Besides being able to choose to read the text or hear the text, readers can also enjoy Beai's first novel, WIDOW'S WALK, which was nominated for a Bram Stoker Award, take a tour of Beai's Indiana Reservoir Studio, and now view a video interview conducted in Chicago during the World Horror Convention. Introduction by Brian A. Hopkins. Afterword by Larry Santoro. Cover Art by Alan M. Clark.

THE SUBTLE TIES THAT BIND, a new collection by David Niall Wilson, which also takes advantage of a Deluxe Edition offering. In the DE, each CD is inscribed with a unique Haiku, and the disk contains the complete Haiku collection! Art by Tom Arensberg. Introduction by Stephen Mark Rainey.

EXTREMES 4: DARKEST AFRICA, edited by Brian A. Hopkins, the latest in the critically acclaimed and award-nominated series. Each compact disk is chocked full of digital audio and video as well as photographs and original interior art by M.W. Anderson. Cover Art by GAK.

STONES, edited by Judi Rohrig, provides a quiet offering considering the multimedia possibilities of LWP. Unique to this anthology are the ten photo galleries. Original music by Natalia Lincoln and Mason Jones.

AT LONG LAST... THE OFFICIAL RE-LAUNCH OF DARKECHO HORROR
I'm sure there are errors, bad links, and other glitches, so I'll be happy to hear from you when you find them -- consider yourself a beta-test. Although it's all more graphics-heavy, it is still primarily a text site so I hope that load times are relatively fast for folks.

Along with a completely new design (including more than a dozen of Rick Berry's fabulous works) and tons of new or improved graphics (I never had Photoshop until last fall) there are all sorts of nifty new features:

- Fancy-schmatzy "flash" type splash page (hey, check it out at least once)
- The Dark Blog: Not much here yet, but a way to easily post whatever is on my mind
- Message Board/Guestbook for your comments - A search feature
- Automatic subscribe and unsubscribe (there are cool little movies that acknowledge the subscription or removal) Links correction, submission, or update form
- Expanded "About" page
- The obligatory photo page (this one may go...)
- Newly updated Dark Links section
- Updated workshop info

There's not much *new* content -- although you'll find reviews that were never on the site before and recent Downloadable PDFs of material previous (and recently) published by The Spook-but I think you'll find it worth the browse.
- Around 115 interviews, articles, commentaries, essays (including more of the HorrorOnline content) (not all of them by me)
- About 170 reviews (also not all by me)

Anything that was formerly a part of DarkEcho Horror, but moved elsewhere *should* now go to a direct-you-to-site page.

DARK PANI...er...FLUDITY
Horror writer Teri Jacobs writes to tell us that her only story of the new year, WILD THINGS, my fantastical tribute to WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE, will appear in issue #12 of Flesh & Blood (which recently won an award from Writer's Digest as the best small press magazine!)

Teri is also the new featured writer at darkfludity.com from April 1 to June 1. She will have her story THE GRAYING up there as well as an Interview, a review and a bio and bibliography.

The featured Artist is Leroy Roper, who paints naked women. That is to say, he actually paints on their nude bodies, turning them from human into felines, or angels or anything else surreal and beautiful. The lucky bastard! (April 3)

From Shane Ryan Staley
IN REMEMBRANCE: GARY BECHT
In the beginning of Delirium, there were supporters who are responsible for giving me the drive to succeed. A few shared the same passion as I, but from the standpoint of supporting fans and avid readers. I've slowly built a base off their support and it has climbed over the years. Sadly, Delirium has lost one of its key supporters, Gary Becht, who tragically died in a head-on collision this past week. Some of you on this mailing list know him, others might recognize his name from my "Special Thanks" section in my latest collection I'LL BE DAMNED, but Gary was one of the biggest Delirium supporters out there, as well as one of my biggest fans as an author.

Gary and I used to work in the same factory and we quickly formed a friendship. He loved baseball and horror and, before the end of his life this past week, had bought every Delirium title. He was a fan of Houarner and Laimo and raved about 4 x 4 when it was released this past fall. He collected each of his Delirium books and cherished them. We talked about Delirium's authors for hours while on the shop floor or nights after work.

Gary was a Vietnam vet - he witnessed true terror firsthand. He had often said that being in 'Nam was probably the reason he was drawn to the genre.

This week, J. F. Gonzalez's MATERNAL INSTINCT was released. Gary's copy, which he was anxiously awaiting on, remains on my desk along with his obituary. He will be greatly missed here as a supporter of my work and of Delirium Books, but, most of all, as the great friend that he has been to me for over the past 6 years.

STOKER AWARDS! THE FINAL NOMINATIONS ARE IN
(but first, a wrenching editorial diatribe -feo)
AND THIS SITE DIDN'T MAKE THE FINAL CUT! So I've decided to walk the true path of the sniveler! I will berate the entire Stoker nominating board, policies, hierarchy, and all and sundry even remotely connected with it. I will do this on message boards throughout the web!

Furthermore, I will make general mass appeals for revolution in letters to editors (who, of course, are far too internecine minded to accept my brilliant stories). I will also display my poor grasp of the English language. I will do this all anonymously: ostensibly so that I can encourage discussion of my diatribes while avoiding the hero worship that would surely come my way if only the proletariat knew who I be (in accutality though, because I have taken the true path of the sniveler - which is also one of cowardice).

BUT LO! I have already forseen the destiny of my actions! Many will come to huddle under my frail umbrella as we first create, then hide from our storm. As the tide of opinion eventually turns against us (and all is totally ignored by those who are far too busy writing and otherwise actually PURSUING their chosen career), we will bravely (though anonymously) backpedal and claim that we meant no offense to anyone, but were merely trying to encourage discusssion on the subject. We will taper off with a few more snide remarks to save our anonymous faces (just in case someone figured out who we really are) and go back to writing our pathetic scribbles, stout hearted in the notion that our, and more to the point, MY, true genius won't be appreciated until after my death. Just like what's-her-name- that American poet.

So with a throat full of sour bile, let me go down the list of folks who have made the final cut.
Contributors to feoamante.com have their names highlighted. Works reviewed linked. Thanks again to Mikey Huyck and Judi Rohrig who supplied me with the list!

These works are officially “nominated” for superior achievement in their respective categories and the authors and editors listed have earned the right to refer to themselves as “Stoker Nominated.”

The ballots are out as of today. The award results will be announced at the Bram Stoker Awards Ceremony on Saturday, June 8th at The New York Helmsley Hotel. Further information can be found at horror.org/stokerbanquet.htm.

MATHESON'S PAST MASTERS
Gauntlet Press is pleased to announce it will publish Richard Matheson's Collected Stories. This definitive collection will be published annually in trade paperback beginning in 2003 in three uniform volumes. The new edition will be edited by Matheson authority Stanley Wiater.

Originally published in a limited edition of only 1250 copies by Dream/Press in 1989, the massive collection has never been reprinted. EDGE Books an imprint of Gauntlet Press intends for the new edition (previously titled simply Collected Stories) to follow Richard Matheson's "The Twilight Zone" Scripts (also edited by Wiater), which was published in two volumes to great acclaim in 2001 and 2002.

Each story will be followed by new and exclusive commentary by Matheson and Wiater. From the original edition, we will include the author's very candid Introduction, as well as the nine tributes by such legendary writers as Ray Bradbury, Robert Bloch, Harlan Ellison, and Stephen King.

DAYS DWINDLE DOWN
By the time the taxman wants your dollar, the twelfth World Horror Convention will be history! WHC2002, which happens April 11-14 in Chicago, has a rich variety of activities in store for convention goers including the Gene Wolfe Radio Theater. Writer Larry Santoro has adapted Wolfe's story, "The Tree Is My Hat," and the cast will feature WHC2002 Guest of Honor Neil Gaiman. The production will be done live on the con's Saturday night, April 13, 2002. Wolfe's story was originally published in the award-winning anthology "999" and was reprinted in THE YEAR'S BEST FANTASY & HORROR. [A reminder that membership costs jump April 1. Don't be foolish about this, horror fans! Registration forms are downloadable at the website.]

REVIEW REVIEW - Like mazes and puzzles? Then perhaps Claude Lalumière's carefully crafted and imaginatively annotated review of Jeff VanderMeer's CITY OF SAINTS & MADMEN (Prime) will sate that part of you. Just follow the yellow brick road to that Land of Oz called Locus Online. Personally, I found the artsy form - while interesting and clever - too distracting for what it was attempting to accomplish, and as I think back on all the words, I'm reminded of a line in the film Amadeus: "Too many notes!" (I also can't remember one darmed thing about Jeff's book!)

Steven R.Cowan, Georgia native and author of GOTHICA: Romance of the Immortals, his first novel, made the nominee list of The 38th Annual Georgia Author of the Year Awards. This is also the first novel Cowan ever wrote. No tale of the pitfalls many aspiring writers endure for many years with manuscript after manuscript piling up, unseen or rejected until a lucky break or hard-earned hit. Cowan wrote his first novel, submitted his first novel and was immediately accepted and published by Southern CharmPress.

On the first try! Wow!

Since, Cowan has continued to realize his dream, in addition to a 40+ hour work week in management and family life he's gone on to write three novels immediately following this successful induction into the literary world. All three of his next novels are complete and pending contract approval with consecutive release dates one after another.

However, GOTHICA: Romance of the Immortals will be judged differently by G.A.Y.A's system to award an author is intense and the merits come by way of a rating or point system. Only those authors whose literary contributions have already proven them by way of writing worthy of consideration have been nominated to reach this level. The judges decide who will be awarded Georgia's Author of the Year using 40 points toward Distinctive Voice, 30 points toward Technical Clarity and 30 points toward Execution of Imagination.

The 38th Georgia Author of the Year Awards, hosted by Mercer University Press, will be held Saturday, March 16, 2002 at Mercer University, 1400 Coleman Avenue, Macon, Georgia. Although the reservation only dinner will be held at 6pm, the Awards Ceremony immediately following at 7:30pm, in the School of Medicine Auditorium, is open to all at no cost.

EDO GOES BIG TIME
In late February Edo van Belkom contracted with Kensington Publishing of New York City to write two new mass-market horror novels - his sixth and seventh novels, and twenty-first and twenty-second books.

The first novel, SCREAM QUEEN, about a reality television show in a haunted house that goes horribly wrong, is scheduled for publication in March 2003. The second, as yet untitled novel, will be delivered to Kensington in February of 2003 for publication later in the year, or early in 2004.

This marks the first time a novel by Edo will be available in the mass-market format since his Dragonlance fantasy novel LORD SOTH was published in November 1997. Edo's last two horror novels, TEETH (selected by SF CHRONICLE as one of the best horror novels of 2001), and MARTYRS, were both published as trade paperbacks.

But before SCREAM QUEEN is on bookstore shelves across North America, Edo's second young adult horror anthology, BE VERY AFRAID! (a sequel to the Canadian Library Association Young Adult Book of the Year Finalist BE AFRAID!) will be published in October 2002 by Tundra Books, an imprint of McClelland & Stewart, Canada's largest publisher.

GRAVE NEWS FOR PICCIRILLI
Tom Piccirilli's new book, GRAVE MEN, hits the shelves the second week in March. Grave Men is a Horror Western, to which Tom says "I know that there's an even bigger stigma attached to the western field than to the horror genre, but this novel is fairly macabre and bizarre as well. Hopefully fans of my horror and mystery work will enjoy it."

Also out soon from Cemetery Dance is CAST IN DARK WATERS. A strange action-adventure-horror novella, co-written with Ed Gorman, it tells the story of a female pirate in the early 18th Century who is haunted by her dead husband as she seeks to save a young woman trapped on an island where demons supposedly roam.

MORE BITS OF HELL
The weather is warming and soon little green things will come wriggling out of the black dirt. Those fingernails will be filthy, I bet, so don't let them get hold of you and pull you into the grave!

Meanwhile, escaping those green-fingered clutches and hitting the highway for signings and appearances are some very fine authors. Why not get out of the house and give them some company.

BURBANK & SHERMAN OAKS, CA - February 25
Simmons continues to haunt with two signings on Monday: the first, at 1:00 p.m. in Burbank at Dark Delicacies and then at 6:00 p.m., he'll darken the doors at Dangerous Visions in Sherman Oaks.

ORANGE CITY, CA - February 26
If this is Tuesday, then Dan Simmons must be signing his new book at the Book Carnival at 6: 00 p.m.

SCOTTSDALE, AZ - February 27
Ayup, it's Dan Simmons! He hopped a freight and jumped off on Wednesday, for his 7:00 p.m. signing at the Poisoned Pen.

MINNEAPOLIS, MN - February 28
Who gets around more than Brian Keene? DreamHaven welcomes Dan Simmons (surprise!) at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday. Bet he'll be happy to sign a few books, but somebody give the poor man a fresh pen!

BURBANK, CA - March 2
Author John Shirley will be signing his new novel, DEMONS, and illustrator Gris Grimly will be signing the new edition of Joan Aiken's THE COCKATRICE BOYS on Saturday, at 2:00 p.m. at Dark Delicacies.

LEWISTON, IDAHO
Later that day, at 7:00 p.m., RARE anthology editor and author Brian Knight will be reading his "Sasquatch Cafe" at Black Bird Java.

NEW YORK, NY
Kelly Link joins the crowd at the KGB Bar in Manhattan at 7:00 p.m. to read and sign STRANGER THINGS HAPPEN.

LOS ANGELES, CA - March 9 & 10

These folks represent other excellent authors like Robert Tanenbaum (author of the Butch Karp legal thrillers) and Jack Du Brul (author of the Philip Mercer adventure series).

Also, the largest bookstore chain in Canada has recently agreed to stock his novel, Riverwatch nationwide. All you Canadian fans will shortly be able to get the book without having to pay shipping fees or higher prices than your US friends! Joe asks that you support their decision by dropping into a Coles or Chapters and pick up a copy (HA! How altruistic! It won't hurt Joe either!). Joe will "even send you a signed bookplate for the front of the book if you email me when you've done so!" (sic - his words so don't write me) You can contact Joe at his newly re-vamped website - JoeNassise.

STEPHEN KING SAYS HE WILL RETIRE, AGAIN
Stephen King has come out again to say that he will retire. Yeah, he's been saying it for awhile. It started out as hints, then as suggestions, then as a passing fancy, and finally it has grown into a full fledged possibility.

The money says he won't, but consider: For a writer as prolific as King, simply willing oneself to - just - stop can't be that easy. Especially at Stephen's age where the urge to write has probably become a Jones. Even Stephen is beginning to see where he's just repeating himself (look for his upcoming novel, FROM A BUICK 8, about a car that goes ape-shit). I've been saying that about him for years, as anyone who has read 4 PAST MIDNIGHT (a collection of four short novels) can see the parallels between his short novel THE LIBRARY POLICEMAN and IT as well as his short SECRET WINDOW, SECRET GARDEN and his full length novel, THE DARK HALF.

Even King says he doesn't want to become a parody of himself, though many fans have been saying that about him for years now. When you're as big as The King, though, disappointed old fans who were there from the beginning are easily replaced by excited new fans who have just discovered you. Let's be honest, how many women ten and twenty years ago, imagined that they were carrying to term and delivering through pain into this world, another Stephen King fan? Steve is still a human being after all and having such a thing to contemplate must be, for better or worse, a mind f*cker!

Personally, I think Stephen is serious about this one. I think he's going to wean himself away from the writing monkey over the next few years. I can easily see him getting more involved with the movie, television, and other forms of media outlets that pay conjugal visits to his vast library of tales. During his lifetime, King has wrote stories that I love, hate, and love to hate. I've paid no small fortune for the privilege of reading King, with both my money and my time. Just as often though, a magazine was borrowed or a book was lent by the local public library - it was life still spent - often well spent - reading through his mind. The tales that captured my imagination were the ones I bought to read again. And again. So for all the years and all the worlds, "Thanks, Stephen!"

NO TRAFFIC CONTROL FOR THE WICKED!

Lancaster, PA - Swim for a mile; bike for 25 miles; run for 6.2 miles. Typical triathlon, right? Except for the first time in the YMCA-sponsored event's 20-year history, a portion of the race may be without any traffic control because police officers in the Penn Township area are refusing to participate.

According to an article at Lancaster Online: "The safety detail is unfilled because eight members of Penryn fire police voted unanimously to boycott the event after accusing YMCA of promoting witchcraft by reading Harry Potter books to children."

(Oh, oh!)

YMCA executive director Michael Carr maintains that the YMCA is "a value-based organization" that respects "Christian heritage," and he disputed any claims that his organization promotes witchcraft. "There is no teaching of things that are inappropriate here," he said. "Harry Potter is just one of our books that (the kids) read." Parental approval is also given.

Responding to this action in the community where he lives, writer and illustrator, Timothy Truman (ATOMIC CHILI, JONAH HEX, STAR WARS comics, among others) has submitted this letter to the editor of the Lancaster Sunday paper:

"In regards to the Penryn Fire Police and and their refusal to serve as traffic controllers for this year's YMCA Triathlon due to the YMCA's use of the Harry Potter fantasies in their children's programming, perhaps a name change is in order: the Penryn Department of Vice And Virtue. This might be a more appropriate designation for the company in their attempts to keep their dark, narrow little world safe from the awful forces of Imagination and Literacy."

A few years ago, Truman and Texas writer Joe R. Lansdale successfully tangled with a free speech issue in a suit brought by the Winter Brothers. The Comic Book legal Defense Fund and attorney / author Andrew Vachss also participated in the drawn-out scuffle. Since that time, Truman has been an outspoken proponent of free speech issues.

BIG WEEK FOR THE KING!
This last week in January, first week in February, promises to be a jam-packed one for Mr. Stephen King, writer, producer, philanthropist. On Sunday, January 27, the first of three parts of his ROSE RED television drama will air on ABC (9 p.m. EDT with parts two and three being shown on Monday and Thursday nights). Stevie's the executive producer on this baby which means he managed to keep a certain scene or two from being "hacked." LOL!

Then on Saturday, February 2, King will be joined by Peter Straub, Pat Conroy, John Grisham, and a few others to raise money for the medical expenses for actor and audio book recording artist Frank Muller. Muller was severely injured in a motorcycle accident last November. The event takes place beginning at 8:00 p.m. at Town Hall, 123 W. 43rd St, NY, NY. Tickets are steep: $100, $75, and $50, but the entire sha-bang will be taped with copies being sold to provide additional funds. More information is available here: bitchen.com/muller/details.html.

AT LAST! TWILIGHT TALES VISITORS ARRIVE FROM THE BIG APPLE!
Last fall, Becky Maines and Rob Stauffer were the scheduled guests at the Twilight Tales Reading series. Then the terrorist attacks happened in their home turf of New York, causing them to postpone. Well, now, Becky and Rob will be in Chicago at the Red Lion Restaurant & Bar on Monday, January 21, at 7:30 p.m.

Becky is a first-generation Twilight Tales regular, so this will be a grand homecoming you won't want to miss! Rob will share something from his DIRTY OLD TOWN: Tales of New York City and other magical places.

Then on Monday, January 28, Bill McMahon is on tap with "Fully Adjustable at all Five Levels," dark science fiction in an experimental form, followed by Richard Chwedyk who will read from "The Story You've All Been Waiting For - A Milton Howitzer Production." Again, everything starts at 7:30 p.m., upstairs at the Red Lion (just across the street from the historic Biograph Theatre).

HIGHS AND LOWS AT STEALTH PRESS
The good news is signings by Clive Barker, of Clive's BOOKS OF BLOOD are setting records at bookstores. His December 8 signing at Dark Delicacies in Burbank, California was the Best Single Day total of any book ever sold there. What's more, it was also the Most Copies of a single selling title ever. So Clive has still got it.

Stealth Press has also got kudos from the January 2002 issue of LIBRARY JOURNAL, where Michael Rogers cited six "Best Reprints of 2001." Stealth's NEBULA AWARD STORIES series (from 1965, 1966, and 1967, respectively) were among those chosen.

On the down side, Stealth Press has been impacted by a sluggish economy from both a sales perspective and in the area of raising capital. As a result, they have reduced staff and stretched out their publishing schedule. Some previous publication dates for previously announced first quarter titles have, as yet, not been reassigned new dates. Onepotentially popular title, DREAMER OF DUNE, by Frank Herbert has been cancelled completely.

Also, Stealth is discontinuing international shipping direct from the Web site (except to Canada).

MCCAMMON RETURNS!
Retirement's over! Robert McCammon will return (YES! YES! YES! -feo) as an author this fall with a new book, SPEAKS THE NIGHTBIRD. Though information is incomplete, it appears the Alabama native has chosen the Montgomery's River City Publishing to print this first novel since his self-imposed retirement in 1999. And even though they don't have a price to quote you, Amazon.com is already accepting orders, noting customers will have to approve the price before books are shipped.

For McCammon fans, two additional opportunites have just fallen open. One is the new McCammon website: robertmccammon.com which is set to launch at the end of January. And second is a new Newslist created to provide information about this major publishing event. To join, simply send an email to mccammon-news-request@robertrmccammon.com with "SUBSCRIBE" in the body of the email. No chatting allowed now!

Hey, 2002 might wind up being a decent year after all!

TWO IF BY SEA; MANY IF BY MARYLAND! An all-out extravaganza is being planned at Borders in the Annapolis Mall for Sunday, January 27. At 1:00 p.m. author, editor, and Feo Amante's own Brian Keene will be signing new books along with J.F. Gonzales, Karen E. Taylor, and a few more who are being added even as we go to web. Best place to check for updates is briankeene.com.

LOOK! A HEAD! NO, IT'S LOOKING AHEAD! NEW YORK!

Circle that calendar for Saturday, February 2, as the city with a tremendously big heart continues revealing that part of itself. At 8:00 p.m. on that date, Stephen King, John Grisham, Pat Conroy, and Peter Straub will join together at Town Hall, a 1,500-seat performance hall located at 123 West 43rd (between 6th and 7th Avenues), to offer readings and reflections in a performance to benefit Frank Muller. The familiar voice for these and other authors on books on tape, Muller was in a horrible motorcycle accident last November. Since that time, Muller's made some strides toward recovery, but he still has a long way to go. His medical bills have been enormous, and the family's (his wife is expecting their second child in July) daily living expenses are mounting without his continuing income. Ticket prices will be $100, $75 and $50. The performance will be taped, and the audio recording will be made available for purchase. If you would like to reserve tickets for the benefit performance, please send an email to mullerbenefit@aol.com. For more information, check the website: bitchen.com/muller/details.html.

MINNEAPOLIS! CARRION WAY author Dan Simmons will be the guest at Dreamhaven Books, 912 West Lake Street, on Tuesday, February 26, at 6:30 p.m. He'll be there to promote his upcoming book, A WINTER HAUNTING.

LETS GET DECADENT
Hey all you burgeoning writers out there, our own Monica O'Rourke is editing a trilogy of anthologies, the first of which, DECADENCE is scheduled to be released in 2002 by Prime Books. The first book has been completed and will feature such writers as
Nancy Kilpatrick,
Edo van Belkom,
Charlee Jacob,
Gene O’Neill, and
Feo Amante
will be available in the next couple of months.

For future volumes of Decadence, Monica is looking for cutting edge erotic horror stories. The erotica can be subtle, or over-the-top, or anywhere in-between, but the stories must be horrific. No science fiction. Fantasy, as long as it’s dark - no sword and sorcery, or gnomes, or creatures of that ilk.

Submit well-crafted, professionally formatted stories between 1k and 7k. Monica says: "I’m not going to waste space describing what a professionally formatted ms looks like; there are plenty of good books on the market that can teach you this fine art.

Contact info MUST be on the manuscript - name, title, email addy - and not just in the email. RTF attachments ONLY. No text, no imbedding in the body of the email. Ick. Original stories only - query if you have a reprint you absolutely must send my way.

Payment will be a copy of the anthology plus an equal share of royalties. Volume two of Decadence will be published mid-2002, most likely early summer. Email submissions only. Send your beautiful creations to gunslngrmo@aol.com."
