From Paula Guran
DARK WEB ANIMATION!
There's a new section of THE DARK LINKS: DARK WEB ANIMATION. To me, this is a new form of storytelling developing, something different from movie shorts (even those little films developed with the Internet in mind.)
Like short stories, they are confined by certain limits and limits are often a great impetus to creativity. They work in episodic form, too, to tell a longer story or convey a series of connected stories.

So I've found some of interest. Let me know if you find more. I'm not interested in previews or trailers. I'd like to list only complete stories or episodic stories.

"THIS WASN'T THE FIRST TIME A MOBSTER'S SPERM FOUND ITS WAY OUT OF ALLENWOOD."
Okay: without question; mobsters, gangsters, and other criminal thugs are nothing more than parasites - ticks and tapeworms - doing nothing constructive and feeding off of an otherwise productive society. Look at any country where organized crime rules and you see a country destroyed by poverty, death, disease, and non-stop deadly violence. And a lot of poverty stricken "Warlords" killing each over USO shipments of rice and powdered milk. I grant you that.

But that said, this article, regarding a member of New York's Columbo organized crime family, is pretty funny! Even funnier is the state government of Pennsylvania's reaction to it!

GHOSTS ARE NOT REAL SAYS STUDY
Yeah, that's what a group of researchers in England are saying, and to prove their theory, they've carefully and formally disproved two of England's most famous ghosts:
Catherine, the fifth wife of King Henry VIII
and
Mr. Boots, who reportedly makes his home in the South Bridge Vaults in Edinburgh.

Yeah, looks like this is the Final Nail in the Coffin for Ghosts! (Get it? HA! I KILL ME! Don't you wish I would?)

But let us also keep in mind that the man who drove this research is none other than Richard Wiseman, psychology professor at the University of Hertfordshire in southern England, and the man who, only last year, announced to the world that he had discovered, through careful research and study, THE funniest joke in the world.

The world was not amused.

From Brian Keene
DOING IT KEENE STYLE
Brian says that he's almost finished the first draft of BABYLON FALLING, a novella that will be published by Earthling Publications later this year. Anybody remember the old Ace Double Books - two novellas by two authors in one paperback book? Earthling is going to try something similar, and the first one will feature John Urbancik and Keene. BABYLON FALLING takes place in current war in Iraq, and tells the story of a group of American P.O.W.’s who uncover a plot by Saddam’s Fedyaheen brigade to unleash a Djinn on the allied forces.

Also, THE RISING, as a Leisure paperback, will hit stores in early January, 2004. Brian believes that Leisure is really behind the book, as far as marketing and promotion.

EISNER AWARD NOMINEES ANNOUNCED
Nominees for the prestigious Eisner Awards, the comic industry's equivalent of the Oscars, have been announced. Among them are a number of books and creators that were recommended here in this space, proving once again that feoamante.com is ahead of the curve when it comes to searching out the cream of the crop!

Horror/mystery-related names on the list include:
Mike Mignola (HELLBOY and others);
Bruce Jones and company for THE INCREDIBLE HULK;
Alan Moore and Kevin O'Neill for THE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN;
Laura DePuy Martin for her coloring on RUSE;
Dylan Williams' ORCHID for Best Anthology and its "Green Tea" for Best Short Story;
and I can't end without mentioning my pal Jimmy Palmiotti and his lovely partner in crime Amanda Conner, along with Garth Ennis, whose THE PRO is up for Best Humor Publication. I haven't reviewed THE PRO (about a super-powered hooker) because it doesn't fall into our genres*, but it's a fun read if you have a sick and twisted sense of humor.

If you're going to be at the San Diego Comic-Con in July like me and Feo, you can attend the Eisner Awards yourself and see who wins! Now, in what other creative industry can the general public attend their awards show, and see the award presented by the very man (Will Eisner) it's named after? Ain't comics grand?

*FeoNote: Well? How about it, gang? Is Sick and Twisted a good enough category for reviewing a comic? Let Chris or myself hear some feedback on this.

REAL WORLD HORROR
Don't mind them - they're just busy maturing faster than the boys.

The Senior girls in Northbrook Illinois, USA decided to have fun with the junior girls, after the game, by beating the smaller girls over the head until they bled (one required stitches), dumping human feces on them, throwing broken bottles at them, beating the younger girls over the head with bottles, all in front of an audience and while the cameras were rolling. Now, police are investigating this matter as five of the younger girls had to go to the emergency room of the local hospital. The Senior girls involved insist that it is an annual event and besides, "Everyone else does it." The attackers are currently worried that they will "get in trouble" for their actions.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, KOLCHAK!
In 1972, when Darren McGavin was in his early fifties (and certainly over the hill as an actor), he starred in a small television movie called THE NIGHT STALKER. The movie was about Carl Kolchak: an aging, over the hill, world weary reporter who, at the end of his career, suddenly finds himself getting side-swiped by an unbelievable, yet all too terrifying story. A story that no one will believe, yet with his reporters instincts and ability to find the truth, one he can prove. There were twists and turns, governments conspiracies, something was going on right under our noses that we knew nothing about, and Kolchak was only there because, in his bumbling way, he tripped right over it. The film (screenplay by Richard Matheson, based on a story by Jeff Rice) proved so popular that a second made for TV movie was shot for the following year called THE NIGHT STRANGLER (again by Matheson and Rice). That movie was wildly successful too and the producers were starting to bite their nails, wondering why the hell they didn't recognize the potential of these films and release them to theaters instead?

REX MUNDI THIS SATURDAY!

(FeoNote: For those of you unaware, Rex Mundi is the creation of ShrunkenHeadStudios: which is nothing more than four guys who got together OVER THE INTERNET NO LESS, and decided to put out a comic book that harkened back to the days of Pulp Horror, Thriller, Mystery, and Suspense! Well hey! That's feoamante.com to a "T"! They showcased their work at the San Diego ComicCon and Image snatched them up! Now they are making history) Image wanted us fresh on the stands for this weekends "Free Comic Book Day" on Saturday (more on that later). Anyway, my apologies for not sending out a newsletter letting you all know that sooner, but in case you were looking for it on April 23rd (they got bumped to an April 30 release) and were concerned /bummed / pissed that it wasn't there, well, that's the deal, at least as well as I know it, and REX MUNDI #3 is waiting, breathlessly, for you to pick it up on Saturday (because I KNOW you're going in for the free books!).

As many of you may know, this Saturday (5/3/03) is Free Comic Book Day: Part Deux (or Year Deux... whatever). Anyway, there are a number of shops that will be doing special things, as will a number of creators, and me and my compadres are no different.

In San Diego, CA. USA, you can drop by Comickaze in Clairmont at 5525 Clairemont Mesa Blvd., just off of 805, where I (Eric J.) will be signing from 1:00 PM on. Our Eisner and Harvey Award nominated colorist, Jeromy Cox, may be joining me after 3:00 PM. I'm going to have copies of Rex Mundi #0 that I'll be giving away, but if you want to get one try to get there reasonably close to 1:00, as I only have a limited quantity.

Now, those of you in New York, I'd love it if you all would drop by Jim Hanley's Universe, located at 4 W 33rd St in New York City, and say "hi" to my partner in crime, Mr. Arvid Nelson, the writer of our little comic. Arvid is also going to be signing and giving away a limited number of Rex Mundi #0. He'll be there from 2:00 PM until he can't possibly sign anymore.

Anyway, whatever you do, please take advantage of the day and stop in, grab some free comics, and maybe peruse some of the other titles on the shelves (like Rex Mundi!). Hopefully we'll see some of you at Comickaze and Jim Hanley's.

WHOA! WHOA!!!
All right you writers! You want hardcore? THIS is hardcore!: Everyone knows that, in fiction, the most hardcore thing you can write is to describe what someone could inflict upon themselves. I mean, it's easy to write a character who inflicts pain on someone else. Too easy. And usually these "villains" are as 2D as they come. The victims too most often. You don't feel their pain. You can wholly disassociate yourself from it. Such desciptions are common and done to death tired! But to inflict serious pain and maiming upon yourself? What goes through someone's mind when they are forced into that position? How could someone put themselves through that ordeal? Read the following news items:

TOMORROW IS X-MEN 2
And Kelly Parks has the review! Is it as good as the original (Is the sequel ever as good as the original? Except for when James Cameron directs of course!) Check out Kelly's review of X-MEN 2 at Horror Movies!

TODAY BANE THE DAY!
When the Chiaroscuro contest begins! In conjunction with Leisure Books, Chiaroscuro is proud to present the 9th ANNUAL CHIAROSCURO SHORT STORY CONTEST! There will be three lush prizes and three honorable mentions with the top prize winning story getting published (at the pro rate of 3 cents a word) in Chiaroscuro. That plus other goodies for the best one, but second and third place winners don't fare too badly either! For complete information and contest rules, check out TheChiaroscuro.com.

Because of the contest, Chiaroscuro will not be accepting non-contest story submissions until September, 2003.
