RESIDENT EVIL:

I didn't think much of the first RESIDENT EVIL movie written, directed, and produced by Paul W. S. Anderson. In fact, I thought very little of it. And I actively disliked the incompetent crap that was RESIDENT EVIL: APOCALYPSE. Yet by comparison, RESIDENT EVIL: EXTINCTION, while still seemingly written by a dim child who has no awareness about the world around them, was well directed thanks to Russell Mulcahy (RESURRECTION, THE SCORPION KING: RISE OF A WARRIOR). RESIDENT EVIL in 2002 crashed and burned big time in the U.S., but went on to make just over $100 million world wide. Anderson, already contracted to a three picture deal, went on to pen RESIDENT EVIL: APOCALYPSE. Paul dropped out of directing RE2 to direct ALIEN VS. PREDATOR. RE2, with a slightly bigger budget, tanked in a much bigger way in the U.S., but again, was profitable in the world market. RESIDENT EVIL: EXTINCTION, once again saw a slightly larger budget. If there was one thing that both sequels proved, it was that there was a significantly larger audience for RESIDENT EVIL as long as Paul W. S. Anderson wasn't directing them. Anderson's writing and direction made its mark on ALIEN VS. PREDATOR. This was a franchise that, despite having humongous name recognition and an enormous fanbase, tanked in the U.S., under Paul, but true to Anderson's abilities, was profitable in the world market. Anderson's next film, THE DARK, had a lowered expectation of about a $5 million budget, and went on to make less than $600k in the world market. Ouch! Anderson's next production, 2007's DOA: DEAD OR ALIVE, had a budget of about $21 million, grossed under $500k in the U.S., and had a total worldwide box office including the U.S. of under $8 million. OUCH! Anderson seriously needed a hit in the worst way. But he didn't get it with the 2008 remake of DEATH RACE 2000, which was a drastic disaster in the U.S. Written, directed, and produced by Anderson, the $45 million dollar DEATH RACE failed to even break even at the theatrical box office, grossing only $36 million, and only narrowly made profit in the world market combined with the U.S. Anderson's next production, 2009's PANDORUM, failed to break even in the U.S. and the world market combined, posting a grand total of about $19 million against a $33 million dollar budget. OW! DAMN IT! So now what? Now Paul is returning to RESIDENT EVIL, with RESIDENT EVIL: AFTERLIFE 3D, since RE remains his strongest franchise. Paul, in trying to repair his career (although the guy IS or should be ridiculously rich by this time, despite well over a decade of severe missteps - remember 1998's SOLDIER?), is producing, writing, and directing this one. On the one hand, it's 8 years since Paul last directed RE. He might have grown as a writer, director, and producer. On the other hand, all of the afore mentioned.
