hospitalized indefinitely with severe cardiopulmonary disease and emphysema.

to this dire situation, the HWA called for contributions to a benefit
auction for Mr. Grant. Although HWA is not a charitable organization and
contributions could not be considered charitable donations, this didn't
stop a flood of concerned writers, editors and publishers from contributing
to this cause. Stephen King, Dean Koontz, Peter Straub, Clive Barker,
Neil Gaiman and dozens of other accomplished authors have contributed
to the event. Publishers such as Leisure Books, Cemetery Dance, DNA Publications
and Night Shade Books have also contributed.

The Horror Writers Association holds auction to benefit stricken author
NEW YORK,
MAY 13. The Horror Writers Association (HWA) is holding a benefit auction
for legendary author and editor Charles L. Grant, who has been
hospitalized indefinitely with severe cardio-pulmonary disease and emphysema.
Mr. Grant, whose body of work spans five decades, faces a tremendous burden
on his health and substantial health-related expenses.
In response
to this dire situation, the HWA called for contributions to a benefit
auction for Mr. Grant. Although HWA is not a charitable organization and
contributions could not be considered charitable donations, this didn't
stop a flood of concerned writers, editors and publishers from contributing
to this cause.
Stephen King,
Dean Koontz, Neil Gaiman, Peter Straub, Clive Barker and nearly fifty
other accomplished authors have confirmed contributions to the event.
Publishers such as Leisure Books, Earthling Publications and Night Shade
Books have also contributed.
"The
response has been amazing," said Joe Nassise, president of the Horror
Writers Association. "The absolute generosity of everyone involved
has been truly overwhelming."
This two-part
fundraiser, being held in conjunction with the HWA's annual Bram Stoker
Awards Banquet weekend, is the first of its kind for the organization.
One component of the fundraiser is a high-profile auction to be held on
eBay beginning May 23 and running until June 5, the evening of the awards.
Bidders can find all auction items by searching the eBay User ID "bookwyrm55."
The second
component is a silent auction to be held on June 4-6 at the HWA annual
meeting in New York City where the Bram Stoker Awards will be presented.
THE HORROR
WRITERS ASSOCIATION (HWA) is a worldwide organization of writers and publishing
professionals dedicated to promoting dark literature and the interests
of those who write it. HWA was formed in the late 1980's with the help
of many of the field's greats, including Dean Koontz, Robert McCammon,
and Joe Lansdale. Today, with over 1,000 members around the globe, it
is the oldest and most respected professional organization devoted to
the genre.

Lifetime Achievement Award Winners
NEW YORK, MAY 10. Each year, the Horror Writers Association presents the
Bram Stoker Awards, named in honor of the author of the seminal horror
novel Dracula, for superior achievement in the horror genre.
The Bram
Stoker Award for Lifetime Achievement is the most prestigious of these
awards, given in acknowledgment of superior achievement not just in a
single work but in an entire career. Individuals must be at least sixty
years of age or have been published for a minimum of thirty-five years
to be considered eligible for the award. Previous winners have included
such noted authors as Stephen King, J.N. Williamson, Ramsey Campbell,
Charles Grant and Ray Bradbury.
This year,
the Horror Writers Association will present the award to both bestselling
author Anne Rice and to award-winning editor Martin H. Greenberg.

On this day in 1862, a small Mexican Army of 4,000, led by Texas born
General Zaragosa and his Colonel Porfirio Diaz, destroyed the much larger
invading French Army and traitorous Mexican Army (a
combined force of 8,000). The victory was short lived. Under another
pretext, the French sent 30,000 troops the following year, installing
a relative of the French governing family, Archduke Maximilian of Austria.
As ordered by President
Lincoln, a small, standing Union Army, under General Sheridan (near
the end of the American civil war), came to the Texas/Mexican border
where they supplied the victorious Mexican Army with weapons (the
worst was yet to come). Union soldiers were discharged and allowed
to fight with Mexico against the French if they chose and some did. So
why should Ameicans celebrate Cinco
de Mayo? The American Legion of Honor marched in the Victory Parade
in Mexico City. It was a good idea for Americans and Mexicans to party
together and get drunk then and its a damn good idea now! CINCO
DE MAYO! Whoop! Whoop!

THE FIRST
WEEKEND IN MAY
And it's off to Anza Boregga State Park in California. Home of the protected
Big Horn sheep that roam and live in this otherwise inhospitable piece
of desert known as the California Badlands. Among the many natural things
we saw was a coyote catch, kill, and start to eat a snake. Then thinking
better of it, he dropped it on the ground and pissed on it so's as to
mark it as his for later. Ha! Eyes are bigger than yer stomach, eh, wolfie?
The coyote realized that it wasn't that hungry after all but knew that
it would be later. So why wait?
The park
rangers landed their helicopter and let me have my photo taken with it.
This is what I look like in the desert when I'm not wearing black clothes.
